Hello Guys! I can't believe it is already Friday! That week gone by super fast, I am talking about it a little bit more in my stories, check them out if you are interested. If you want to experience another wine tasting, than don't go anywhere because I brought you a real gem and an icon from South Africa! Have you heard about Pinotage and the Kanonkop Winery @kanonkopwineestate ? That is the signature grape variety of the country and has a lovely history that I will talk more in my next blogpost soon. Now let's taste this beauty! It has a deep ruby red color and a medium plus viscosity. On the nose we can detect super ripe fruits (cherry, strawbery, plums) with milk chocolate, sweet spices and vanilla. It is a dry wine with high acidity, medium plus but smooth tannins with high alcohol content (14%) which shows a beautiful full-bodied wine with flavours of raspberry, strawberry, cinnamon, vanilla and some liquorice in the long lingering finish. An excellent quality which can be drunk in the next 5-10 years easily on 16-18°C. Perfect choice for a BBQ night in the summer or even during lunch with spaghetti bolognese, lasagna, or with a cheese board. Today I have wines from the two signature grapes of South Africa; Chenin Blanc and #Pinotage.  #Chenin Blanc hailing from France but has flourished in South Africa. Pinotage, a red grape, was created in South Africa in the early 1920s, by crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsault. I will go into the details and history of these two very interesting grapes in my article on mywinepal.com.   @kanonkopwineestate and @kenforrestervineyards are both located in the quality wine region known as #Stellenbosch.  It is one of the oldest and most important wine-producing regions in South Africa.  I was privileged to have met and tasted wines with Ken Forrester here in Vancouver before COVID.  He is a quality producer of Chenin Blanc wines around the world. Ken Forrester Vineyards Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc 2019  Appearance: A bright, deep golden colour. Nose: Pronounced aged aromas showing toast, butterscotch, apples and apricots, plus a touch of petrol, and hints of sweet spices and honey behind these other aromas. Some lemon with air. Palate: Dry, medium-plus body, round, with a waxy texture and higher acidity that leaves a light prickle.  Roasted apples and pears, butterscotch and toast, plus dried apricots flavours.  The wine does get lighter on the mid-palate.  With air, I also picked up some apple blossom. Finish: A long length finishing with light toast, dried apricots, butterscotch and pineapple, and a hint of apple blossom. Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage 2018  Appearance: Almost opaque garnet with a ruby tinge. Nose: Medium intensity aromas with a mix of leather/earthy, plums, black cherries, oak and vanilla. Good Neighbours 🐞 Laibach has been a renowned organic wine farm since 2012. Since 1994, the property has been in the possession of the German, Laibach property. Proprietor, current owner Petra Laibach-Kühner is retiring. In 2022, @kanonkopwineestate acquired its neighbour, Laibach with its 40ha under vine. Kanonkop has 100ha of plantings. According to @winemag.co.za : “Laibach includes a cellar and various other buildings including guest accommodation. An enjoyable Kanonkop evening | A snoek braai and the firing of a tiny canon to celebrate @kanonkopwineestate successful year. Among their auspicious successes: the 2015 Paul Sauer achieved a record price of R22,500 at the 2018 @nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction. In addition, the Estate was awarded 5 Stars by Platters for the Paul Sauer, the 2013 Pinotage was awarded a spot in the ABSA Top 10.
