Lilies In Transition: The state of trans representation in yuri
Content Warning: Discussion of transphobia, transmisogyny
Spoilers for I Wanna Be Your Girl
Yuri is a growing genre, increasingly depicting more and more varied stories about sapphic love. As yuri continues to get queerer, the existence of trans people in these stories would be one way to provide validation for trans readers in their gender and sexuality while also helping cis people understand and internalize our long standing place in the sapphic community. Yuri works featuring trans characters do exist, though their history is complex and they remain relatively few.
A Slice of Reality
Trans people are rooted in the sapphic community and have been a core part of it for as long as it could be called a community. Lesbians, by their very sexuality, defy the gender binary which was so strictly defined by heterosexuality, and in many cases they lose access to their conditional womanhood. This is furthered by the very long history of people engaged in the sapphic community who actively defied gender norms by presenting masculine, be that as a Butch, a Stud, lacking a label or some other label. Following from this, there is plenty of evidence of gender-defying companionship between lesbians and trans people in historical documentation, such as the works of Mariette Pathy Allen, who has chronicled transgender people for over 40 years as a photographer and released several books of her work. This is also present in fiction: for example, Alison Bechdel’s classic comic series Dykes To Watch Out For (1983) features a strip talking about the need for cis lesbians to have solidarity with trans women.

#i am only adding this because the main character (the cis girl) doesn't stop being bisexual i don't think...#but this series is an unimaginable let down. it's borderline disgusting how much of a let down it is (spoilers)#her friend who she is in love with (the trans girl) is completely sidelined and her gender identity exploration#ends up with her being a feminine cis girl married to a man & with a kid.. FUCK YOU#oms listing#kanojo ni naritai kimi to boku#takase umi#l: kanojo ni naritai kimi to boku#l: f x m#l: queer & ambqueer#l: queer character#l: cross dressing#l: genderbender#l: gb: ftm#l: masc f#l: gb stops#l: masc f stops#personal score: 5#for the longest time i didnt even add to my oms list because of how angry and disheartened i was by it#they literally dangled a yuri with a trans girl and likely nonbinary character in front of my face and said sike#this is what happens when authors are not IN the community and fundamentally dont understand the cultural state#of the thing theyre borrowing to sprinkle on their work#all of us over here can see the line you won't let your character cross

Kanojo ni Naritai Kimi to Boku
.
.
This was genuinely a great queer manga, the representation is realistic and I loved the focus on friendship and the way it approached the topic of self discovery. It doesn't ignore the pain of discrimination, but more than anything it's a hopeful story with a happy ending. Highly recommended, especially if you're questioning, I think it has some really good points on how to find and accept yourself.

The manga: When one girl's childhood friend decides to attend highschool as a girl, the first girl decides to support her friend by attending highschool as a boy, and begins to question her own gender and sexuality.
dont worry she isnt trans! all her friends, family, and teachers belittle her, gaslight her, and question every decision she makes until the pressure is too much and gives up on crossdressing! (the childhood friend really is trans in this one, she grows up to be a happy adult woman)
The manga: a college guy meets his childhood friend, who was formerly a boy but is now a woman, and has run away from home after an unspecified disagreement with her family which has left her with a significant amount of trauma; it's implied she was bullied heavily in the time since they've last seen each other.
But don't worry, she's not trans! She just got an illness which turned her into a woman!
The manga: a high school boy with an interest in make-up uses his gloomy, depressed (male) childhood friend as a model to improve his skills. This causes said friend to have an "awakening" and start dressing as a woman, and to overall be a much happier, brighter, outgoing person.
But don't worry, the friend is not trans! He's just a boy who crossdresses because his childhood friend likes him better that way!
The manga: a high school boy joins a club where the members can turn into magical girls, which in his case involves physically transforming into a girl. When in girlmode, he's much happier and enjoys his life much more, and overall prefers staying in girl mode; when the ability to transform is temporarily taken away from him, he sinks into a deep depressive episode.
But don't worry, he's not trans! He's just a boy who enjoys being a girl!
The manga: a college student loses a bet and has to crossdress for a night out on the town, and meets and hooks up with a butch girl; they fall in love and start dating. The boy always crossdressed when they meet, and starts enjoying being "treated like a girl" in the relationship and starts crossdressing even when he doesn't have to meet his girlfriend and enjoys activities such as clothes shopping and make-up and putting on nail polish.
But don't worry, he's not trans! He's just a boy who crossdresses to please his butch girlfriend!
The manga: a guy is magically turned into a girl as a result of saving his best friend, the crown prince, from an assassination attempt. The prince decides that he has to take responsibility, and asks the new girl to marry him; despite being smitten she refuses, wanting to date first. She is later offered a way to go back to being a man, but when she does turn back she's disgusted by her own appearance and depressed all the time, ultimately deciding to stay a girl.
But don't worry, she's not trans! She's just a boy who's been magically turned into a woman! And decides not to turn back when she can! Because she's not trans! Somehow!
"But we can't write trans women in manga! It's just not something that you do!"

Note
Kanojo ni Naritai Kimi to Boku is about a girl (hime) in love with her best friend (akira) who has recently come out as a trans girl. theyre both starting high school together and hime's gonna do anything she can to make sure shes having a good time and is happy. ive only read a few chapters but it is romantic from what i can tell
i did actually think about mentioning that one but it doesn't really fall into yuri tropes like what i was suggesting and also there's a bit more going on that makes me inclined to say it's not entirely homosexual

'I'm in Love with the Villainess' Author Inori Announces New Yuri Fantasy Light Novel
On September 5, Inori, creator of the hit Yuri isekai series I'm in Love with the Villainess (Watashi no Oshi wa Akuyaku Reijou), announced that she was working on a new Yuri light novel. The book, entitled Yuusha ni Naritai Shoujo <Boku> to, Yuusha ni Narubeki Kanojo <Kimi> (The Girl Who Wants to Be a Hero <me> and The Girl Who Should Be a Hero <You>), will be published in Japanese by Dengeki Bunko this November.
In her Tweet, Inori described Yuusha ni Naritai Shoujo to Yuusha ni Narubeki Kanojo as "a girls' love fantasy work with with the theme of 'I want to' and 'I should." It is illustrated by Akamoku.
Inori is known for creating I'm in Love with the Villainess. Originally posted on the webnovel site Shousetsuka ni Narou, the series was picked up by GL Bunko, which published five volumes between 2019 and 2021. The Yuri series is known for its heavy inclusion of LGBTQ+ themes and identity.
I'm in Love with the Villainess inspired a manga adaptation illustrated by Aonoshimo, which is currently serialized in Ichijinsha's Comic Yuri Hime, a spin-off series, She's So Cheeky for a Commoner, and a television anime adaptation which is set to premiere on Tokyo MX on October 2 and stream internationally on Crunchyroll.
