[30/200] Kannonji Castle Ruins (2021-03-22) After a good night's rest, it's time to head back to Kobe. But since we're in Ise, it'd be a waste to not pay a visit to the famous Ise Grand Shrine. The shrine is dedicated to the almighty sun goddess Amaterasu, and many Japanese shintoists frequent this shrine complex for a good reason: it does feel like a very sacred area. When a shrine includes a map, you know the "Grand" in Grand Shrine is there for a reason. According to Wikipedia, 123 shrines are part of this complex, spread over all of Ise. Additionally, the head priestess of the shrine is none other than the previous Emperor Akihito's daughter! After some local food (Ise Udon), I made my way back to Azuchi to take care of some unfinished business. Across Azuchi Castle lies another range of mountains, with yet another castle, Kannonji Castle. The reason I delayed this castle is because I was travelling with a friend the first time, and there was not enough time to fit in a third castle after Azuchi and Hachimanyama. Not to mention there's quite some distance; I had to go with rental bike strats in order to have enough time to scout the surroundings. Awkwardly, a segment near the foot of the mountain is privately maintained area, so you will have to pay a fee to make use of the entrance. The main attraction of the mountain is honestly not the Castle Ruins, but the Kannonsho-ji, a Buddhist Temple devoted to - you guessed it - Kannon (the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara). The stamp for the stamp rally can also be found in one of the buildings here, as well as a vending machine and toilets. I can't stress how much of a blessing it is to have such facilities on top of a mountain!

“Kannonji in Ōmi Province, Number 32 of the Saikoku Pilgrimage Route” from the series “The Miracles of Kannon” (観音霊験記 Kannon Reigenki) by Utagawa Kunisada I (歌川国貞), 1859: depicting the layout of Kannonshōji Temple (観音正寺) in present-day Ōmihachiman, Shiga Prefecture above, below a scene from the tale wherein the regent Shōtoku Taishi (聖徳太子) is urged to establish the temple by a merman hoping to expiate the negative karma he accrued in a former life as a fisherman
