Best Underrated Anime Group B Round 2: #B7 vs #B3
#B7: Kid epicly procrastinates during class
#B3: Samurai on motorcycles!
Titles, propagandas, trailers, and poll under the cut!
#B7: Tonari no Seki-kun: The Master of Killing Time
youtube
Summary:
All Rumi Yokoi wants to do is focus during school, but she is constantly distracted by Toshinari Seki, her neighboring classmate. Paying attention during class is the least of Seki's worries, as he obsesses over intricate setups created using an assortment of items, from an elaborate domino course on his desk to a treacherous war played out with shogi pieces. Yokoi desperately attempts to focus in class, only to be repeatedly sucked into his intriguing eccentricities; however, they always seem to end up with her getting in trouble with their teacher. Fortunately, lessons will never be dull with Seki's antics around!
Propaganda 1:
Seki-kun is the sort of anime that stays underrated because it seems overly simple, but it really shines in its simplicity. The episodes are short tales of Seki’s epic procrastination and they’re absurdly amusing. Both the opening and ending are super funny and really well-thought-out.
It’s the anime equivalent of a hard candy. You can have an episode at the end of the day or between tasks, and it entertains you well without asking for much.
Propaganda 2:
It is a really short anime with very short episodes but is still very entertaining, and we never hear the character whose name is in the title speak but we still get a really good feel of his personality. It’s just really funny and a lot of fun to watch.
Trigger Warnings: None
#B3: Orient
youtube
Summary:
Freed from the rule of samurai 150 years ago, the people of Hinomoto live peaceful lives and revere their liberators—demons whose true forms remain elusive—as gods. Fated to mine rocks for the demons to feast on, Musashi knows the grim truth: humanity is enslaved by these otherworldly beings and the samurai are the last bastion fighting for freedom. Hiding his true opinion from his peers and growing distant from his childhood friend Kojirou Kanemaki, Musashi lives in angst until the day of his graduation.
When the fresh graduates arrive at the mine, they are horrified to see the inhumane treatment of miners and the uncanny physical appearance of their overseers. However, Musashi manages to endure thanks to Kojirou's help. As the demon leader wreaks havoc on the quarry, Musashi is saved once more from certain death by the Takeda samurai clan. Recovering from humiliation and yearning for adventure, Musashi embarks on a journey to become a samurai and form his own clan!
Propaganda:
Ohtaka has done it again in creating a world full of characters with more depth than can be portrayed limited amount of screen time that each of them get. This leaves the viewer with a whole lot of potential to imagine on their own, even after watching. It’s kind of unique that it is set in the samurai era of Japan, but thanks to crystals left by the demons, motorcycles and flying castles are a thing outside the main characters’ mining village. There are plenty of gags throughout and dynamics between characters. Personally, I loved the second half a lot more than the first because of the cast introduced then. For example, the detail given to Kuroku with the lace she wears–it’s so intricately beautiful! Plus, most of the mechanics of how the world works is covered by then, so we can get into the action.
Trigger Warnings: Child Abuse, Emotional Abuse
The third main character comes from a mentally abusive family situation, but the other two help her leave that situation. Main character’s child abuse is in flashbacks for character development to rise above that and break the cycle. Don’t know if gore or fan service need a trigger warning, typical shonen stuff.

Wow I’m pretty happy with those poll results! I was expecting seiroku and shiro to be higher since they’ve got a lot of fanart and male characters are usually more popular but im pleased tsugumi and michiru beat them both
Hi, Jaded-tisay! I’m actually surprised Kojirou was ranked high (#2!). Personally I would’ve thought he’d be ranked lower. I feel like we don’t see him enough tbh. Even Tsubame beat Shiro by 29 points. If I could’ve voted, it’d be for Shiro.. 🙈But I am happy that two ladies made it into the top 5!

Page 455 Emerald Kishin (Ryokushoku Kishin) “Housenryuuya matanoorochi”
Within the hundred remaining Kishin on hi no moto, this is the fifth strongest. Musashi and friends wait for the emerald kishin, one of the strongest class!
If the red Oni’s offensive is to spit out flames, The green Oni is the opposite. This is a defensive Oni who controls a unique defense wall. The ability of that wall is absolute…
Page 456 He bounces back any attack to the enemy. He reflects all the “touki” high signal that comes out from the kitetsu swords of the bushi too.
Bushi: Let’s fire all at once!!
Page 457 The strongest wall becomes the strongest spear at the same time. And breaking its horn…There hasn’t been a single bushidan in 150 years able to even make a scratch on his skin.
Page 458 Tsugumi: No way! No way! Absolutely no way!!! Tsugumi: There’s no way we can go against that sort of monster!!
Uesugi Bushidan Shiryuu castle, main gate.
Picture:
Castle Gate (arrow: more less this size) harbor.
Man: All of you, members form the alliance have accepted the strategy to recover Awaji Island. The preparations for your temporary residence in this castle have been completed! Bring your servants and come inside the castle!
Page 459 Musashi: He said we can go inside the castle, right? Tsugumi: We can’t! If we follow them past the gates, we’ll be dragged into the war! Kojirou: Right now getting information is our main goal above the Oni extermination. Musashi: But he’s surely inside this castle, right? Lord Uesugi…
Manuscript: So high…
Tsugumi: Woah, the castle tower is so far that is beyond the clouds…
Page 460 Musashi: that’s right Tsugumi… Get me over there using your whip kitetsu sword! I can ask about the old man if I go for a little bit.
Tsugumi: Are you stupid? There’s no way I can get you to a place so high!
Tsugimi: Well… I can do it until the roof of this wall. Musashi: That’s alright, I’ll look around inside the castle first. Kojirou: Come back without starting any trouble… Tsugumi: Well then…
Page 461 Tsugumi: See you later! (whisper)
Musashi: Oof, this is inside the castle of the Uesugi Bushidan… Musashi: Woahh… Incredible!
Page 462, 463
Page 464 Musashi: What’s this… huge castle!?
Musashi’s thoughts: Well… more than a castle… in truth is a mountain! Musashi: I wonder what kind of people lives in this place…
Man: A fine castle, right? Musashi: Eh?
Page 465 Musashi: A tattooed man… who is he? Musashi: …. Tatsuomi: …
Page 466 Musashi’s thoughts: is he sunbathing or….? Manuscript: He seems old…
Musashi: Yeah, it’s great… In the Uesugi castle…
Musashi: I know there are many bushi… Tatsuomi:…. Tatsuomi: bushi, you say
Tatsuomi: All of them have families waiting for them to come back… A wife, children, parents, siblings… The living proof of those unbreakable ties
Page 467 Tatsuomi: I came here before the battle to confirm it…
Musashi: You don’t seem to be a simple hermit, mister. Tatsuomi: Well…
Page 468 Musashi: Are you a bushi, mister? Tatsuomi: Kind of… Are you a bushi? Musashi: yeah Tatsuomi: How old are you? Musashi: I’m 15! Tatsuomi: I see…
Tatsuomi: I don’t want to… Tatsuomi: Send young bushi like you to the land of the death without regret.
Page 469 Tatsuomi: But this time we’ll go against a tough enemy… Well then, I need to get going… Musashi: This man… Musashi: There’s something about him… I really don’t think he’s a simple hermit… Who the hell is he..?
Musashi: Eh? Naoe: You were here after all… Naoe: Everyone is waiting for your words, my lord. Tatsuomi: I’ll go now Musashi: What? Did you say… Lord… Manuscript: no way….
Page 470 Naoe: Wait for your turn to speak… This person is the head of the Uesugi family, Lord Uesugi Tatsuomi. Musashi: … What? Musashi: HE IS!? Naoe: Didn’t I tell you to wait? Musashi: Oops, I’m sorry!
Tatsuomi: I don’t mind… if he’s a bushi from the alliance then he’s from my family too! Musashi: Huh…? He’s surprisingly nice, that’s great! Thought I was told he was a harsh guy… Musashi: There’s something I want to ask you… Naoe: Oh, my lord… This person is…
Page 471 Naoe: Not from the alliance.
Naoe: He’s one of the suspicious people. Lord Takeda insisted that he’s his subordinate, or his relative… but to me, no matter how hard I look… Noe: I see an outsider with no relation to Takeda…
Box1: redhead Box2: Dirty looking clothing uncharacteristic of bushi households.
Naoe: You, tell us what castle you belong to, what corps, what sword color, what rank… answer now! Musashi: What!? Rank!?
Musashi: What the hell… I don’t understand a thing! Is this bushidan terminology? If I don’t answer, they’ll know I don’t have any relation to Naotora! Musashi: Hum… ehm…
Page 472 Musashi: L-Lord Uesugi? Musashi: He’s totally different from before!!
Naoe: So you are an outsider. Trespassing the castle is by law a crime which its punishment is death penalty, but lord Takeda seems to favour him… Naoe: What should we do, my lord?
Tatsuomi: SEND HIM TO THE LABOR CAMP.
Musashi: The labor camp? Manuscripts: What’s that?
Tatsuomi’s attitude changed suddenly! What will happen to Musashi!!?
Continues on the next Issue “Hell”

Best Underrated Anime Group B Round 3: #B3 vs #B1
#B3: Samurai on motorcycles!
#B1: Coming-of-age story set in a “utopia”
Details and poll under the cut!

#B1: From the New World (Shinsekai Yori)
youtube
Summary:
In the town of Kamisu 66, 12-year-old Saki Watanabe has just awakened to her psychic powers and is relieved to rejoin her friends—the mischievous Satoru Asahina, the shy Mamoru Itou, the cheerful Maria Akizuki, and Shun Aonuma, a mysterious boy whom Saki admires—at Sage Academy, a special school for psychics. However, unease looms as Saki begins to question the fate of those unable to awaken to their powers, and the children begin to get involved with secretive matters such as the rumored Tainted Cats said to abduct children. Shinsekai yori tells the unique coming-of-age story of Saki and her friends as they journey to grow into their roles in the supposed utopia. Accepting these roles, however, might not come easy when faced with the dark and shocking truths of society, and the impending havoc born from the new world.
Propaganda:
Shin Sekai Yori is a show about everything. While I cannot fully explain all the themes without spoilers, I will do my best to avoid them. This is difficult because the main twist of the show (which comes in the last episode) recontextualizes the entirety of the show and pulls together the rest of the themes so neatly that, to be frank, it eclipses any other writing decision made within the 21st century.
Shin Sekai Yori is an anime adopted from a novel which ran for 1,000 pages in its original Japanese. Shin Sekai Yori is about the following: gender, sexuality, coming-of-age, children’s rights, eugenics, the corruption and necessity of authority, parenthood, the loss of a child, the cycle of violence, Christianity, Shintoism, humanism and transhumanism, pacifism and at what point the measures taken to uphold it become violence, the dissolving bonds of childhood which come about due to both personal growth and change and outside pressures, nuclear fallout, environmentalism, and whether or not the assumed human authority in the world also covers human authority over other humans.
Principally, Shin Sekai Yori is about a war which doesn’t start until the end. It’s about the benefactors of colonialism and racism being forced to confront the things they have done to people that they never considered to be people. It is about seeing what the previous generation did wrong and wanting to do better, but not knowing how because you were never taught. It is about making that choice anyway. It is about seeing a dead child not as an “other,” but as a part of your community, even if that child did betray your community. While Shin Sekai Yori does conform to the “Fantastic Racism” trope to a degree, it is one of few shows which effectively subverts and inverts it. I will not go into further details on that due to spoilers.
Shin Sekai Yori is also occasionally advertised as “LGBT-Friendly” due to the rules of the society in which our protagonists live. However, this is merely another facet by which Yusuke Kishi examines the control exercised on the lives of children: both in a way of showing the “opposite” of the expected puberty (with opposite-sex couples being banned in sci-fi-hi-school), and in the way that these relationships are seen as mandatory, just as they are in our world. It is impossible to tell if there is real love in any of these relationships, but the ending of two of them results in some of the most miserable M/F sex put to page, so there was at least passion. I could speak further, but I received a warning about the length of my submission in what was once this paragraph. Thank you kindly for your time. [bows]
Trigger Warnings:
Warnings that involve the main characters:
Child Abuse, Emotional Abuse
Animal Cruelty or Death (two dogs die, one by exploding, and the main characters abuse a lot of naked mole rats)
Nudity/Pedophilia (the society in which the children live encourages prepubescent sexual contact and it is shown onscreen)
Kidnapping (of a protagonist’s child)
Graphic Depictions of Cruelty/Violence/Gore (there is a great deal of blood)
Then there’s genocide that happens partially in the background.

Can you tell me a little about Orient? The basic stuff I found on wikipedia is Very Vague and I dont want to dig too deep and get spoiled lol
my pleasure! buckle up! i have read orient even less than i have read magi please keep that in mind if anyone’s going to add something
the boy from the left is musashi! and the one from the right is his best friend, kojirou kanemaki!
the story takes place in the sengoku Japanese period
kojirou and his dad are bushis, honorable people who fight against demons. that made musashi amazed instantly and he decided then and there he and his best friend would become one of the bushis when they grew up!
but thing is... everyone in their city has always been telling them how those demons they pray to are amazing and bushis are nothing but people who should be ashamed of themselves so musashi has grown up in this weird limbo of not knowing who is telling the truth and hiding his desire to become a bushi...
please give it a try! it looks amazing so far!
#thank u for letting me talk about this!#✉️#answered#i have a favorite character that makes me so so happy i can’t wait for you to meet him if you start reading it#:3#orient manga#musashi#kanemaki kojirou#magi labyrinth of magic#sinbad no bouken#adventures of sinbad#just so more people see it and hopefully give it a try#it’s getting an anime adaptation too!
