Paripi Koumei: in arrivo l’anime targato P.A. Works
WORKS (Appare-Ranman!, The Aquatope on White Sand) e comincerà ad andare in onda sulle tv giapponesi a partire da aprile 2022.
youtube

Life After Failure in Sakura Quest
Roadblocks and scenic detours on the winding career path.
Tumblr media
Since its very first promo video, Sakura Quest has been drawing comparisons to SHIROBAKO, and it’s easy to understand the impulse. Both are produced by P.A. Works, have similar character designs by Sekiguchi Kanami, and focus on five young women in the workplace. In a way, they’re also both about what happens after the credits roll on a typical high school anime, providing a refreshingly honest portrayal of the sometimes harsh realities of adulthood while still maintaining a relatively upbeat, optimistic tone.
Those “harsh realities” are where the two series diverge, though, because while SHIROBAKO focuses on what happens after people land their dream jobs, Sakura Quest is attempting something a bit trickier: what happens if they don’t? Can you still find happiness even if you don’t fulfill your childhood dream? What does life look like on the other side of failure?

Thoughts on Sakura Quest
(SPOILERS AHEAD)
Tumblr media
Earlier this week I sat down and watched the final episode of “Sakura Quest”. For anyone who didn't know about the show or just didn't watch it the basic premise is about a recent college grad Koharu Yoshino. Yoshino is in desperate search for a job thats in her own words “not normal”. However she soon finds herself as the “Queen” of the fictional Chupacabra Kingdom in the small rural town of Manoyama, a job which requires her to help work alongside the local tourism board to bring attention back to the city that the rest of the world has seemingly forgot. Throughout her adventures she comes to understand the small town for not only what it can offer, but she also works hard to help bring a real sense of innovation to the town all while balancing revamping the town and being loyal to the people who’s culture still exists there.
From that plot summary one would expect a pretty standard heartwarming Slice of life anime(myself included), and honestly thats exactly what you are getting. However, what the show excels at it excellent character writing that always has a sense of naturalness. The main cast of 5 girls all feel incredibly real, whether looking at the local town star and actor Maki’s struggles with finding a new professional direction in her hometown or the local bookworm and paranormal expert Ririko’s discovery of the world outside the towns borders, all these characters arc’s never feel forced or created simply for the need of drama. All of the choices these girls make in their problems feels incredibly grounded and like a choice most people would make. Maki doesn't magically get a job in Tokyo and have to turn it down in will she won't she decision. She decides to use her talent and varied skills set to start a Troupe in her town. While Ririko not only gets to use her seemingly useless cultural knowledge to aid the town’s festival but also has it serve as a way to make friends with a bunch of foreign cryptids who inspire her to set off on her own journey to see the world outside Mayoyama. None of these decisions seem like they come out of nowhere, they all seem like things any reasonable adult would do.
I think thats one of the best words to describe the show “adult”, not in terms of graphic content, but in the way that it handles it drama and plot. The majority of the major and supporting casts are adults or at least in their early 20′s, and while they all do do a lot of growing throughout the series the growth is never due to drama or problems being dragged put for too long. Often a problem will be brought up and various reasonable solutions will be brought up in response, and then reasonable flaws are brought up as well. Everything in this show just makes sense and the small touches of heightened reality tend to only ever be in service of comedy. From the small touches to the fashion of the girls (which I LOVE) to the way people talk to one another everything in the show feels realistic and mature in a way I wish more Anime would.
The strongest point the show has in its favor is it’s setting though. Manoyama really feels like a town I wanted to visit myself by the time the final credits rolled. The show made me want to eat at its restaurants, walk around its shopping district, look at its lake and tree’s and talk to it’s townspeople, and in a show all about the rural country and showing its importance I think thats ultimately an accomplishment. It resonated with a warmth and comfort that i always look for in the best Slice of Life shows and as always PA works shows a mastery of this genre.
On the techichal side the animation is absolutely serviceable. The same character designer from  PA Works other shows Shirobako and Hanasaku Iroha  Kanami Sekiguchi returns to this series and they are just as pleasing to look at as ever. I mentioned above the outfits the character wear and they are fantastic, they are both stylish in the way women clothing for 20 year olds would be but at the same time seeming practical and not over the top and without a hint of fan service present. The backgrounds of note are fantastic to look at and really help add to the lovely vibe that Manoyama gives off during the series. And as for the music is may be standard for this type of series but I’d like to draw attention to the shows 2 ending themes by band (k)now name “ Freesia” and “Baby’s breath”. Both are really lovely songs and made me sit through the ending credits each week humming along, I wasn't really aware of this band until now but I’ll be sure to keep my ears out for them in the future because their work here was amazing (also their stuff is all available on American iTunes including the songs they did for Sakura Quest, all of which have made great additions to my libraries rotation.).
With this show and staff in particular PA works has managed to make 3 of my favorite slice of life shows (Sakura Quest, Hanasaku Iroha, and Shirobako). This series is definitely one I’d recommend to everyone who’s as big of a Slice of Life fan as I am and this is a new entry in my all time favorites of the genre as a whole and I can’t wait to see what they have in store next. I Really loved my time in Manoyama, and I hope everyone who watched this show or begins to watch it will feel the same way.

MCharlotte.
RegieYoshiyuki Asai MusicJun Maeda Character DesignNa-Ga (Original) Kanami Sekiguchi Art DirectorKazuki Higashiji Sound DirectorSatoki Iida Während P.A.
