Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective Episode 7: The Case of The Observatory Murder (Part 1)
I think there's a lot of reasons that this case is interesting. Starting from the top, we've got a new boarder/episode director in Keizou Kusakawa (a longtime Diomeda staple), we get more information about BLUE, we get more about Ron's past, and we get more of an isolate Isshiki. There's really a lot to like, and a lot to talk about!
Starting off with Kusakawa, I'm very curious to see how they do. They've certainly got someof the Ibata style, but they really like keeping characters in frame with their work. Where Ibata enjoys focusing on details, Kusakawa is using the characters to explore those details. I don't think it's bad or anything, just a different approach, and can create some appealing layouts like this one.
They're just very aware of the characters, and it's very evident with character blocking that promotes a feeling of space more than anything. Just look at how the stage the group in these two moments in the episode. It's certainly very natural, but it also prioritizes a hierarchy and telegraphs the "direction", if you will, of the conversation and interaction.
It strikes out groups and relations very smoothly, while not forcing the smaller pieces into isolation to provide that separation. Also, I just like the first image because the group naturally stays close to the entrance of the observatory as more and more people funnel in. Might sound a little obvious, but placing them at that point in the observatory just works well for introducing the new characters, and for something else I'll explain in just a moment.
Anyways, let's break down this murder case first. Or well, let me explain how the episode breaks down this murder case. Because, I mean, they kind of put it right in front of us from the get go, what with showing off a smoking gun in the opening tour of the observatory and all.
Now, the question is whether or not that gun is the legitimate murder weapon used in the episode, or if it truly is a replica and a weapon from the outside was brought in to commit the act.
To explain, the possibility exists in my mind of this: there is a "replica" gun in the lobby of this observatory that is so well crafted that Ron comments on it. People are uncertain as to whether or not the gun is actually real. It's based on an actual gun, so what happens if someone prepared in advance by bringing a real gun to the island as well? That would mean that the murderer could safely use the murder weapon while leaving behind the replica, creating a false smoking gun.
Of course, this could very easily be debunked by checking if the gun had been discharged in any capacity, but we'll leave that as an assumption for later.
Next up is the possibility of the door. They really put our focus on it with the closeup as it's opened, and for only a few possible reasons I feel.
The one that immediately springs to mind is that the door can only be locked from the outside, and why would this make sense? Well, because the lock is on the outside. I don't know of any doors that have a double sided key lock in my experience. It's always a key lock on the outside, and a physical lock on the inside. Because of the act of opening this door, we know that the door is not kept locked at all times. One could presume that it's left 'unlocked' as the default, which begs the question of why Ron would ever need the key.
And let's keep the ball rolling! Onodera, the woman found dead, starts her interaction off by antagonizing Ron. It's very interesting behavior to have appear, which we'll see again later on in the episode. Though it's also important to note that the owner of the observatory tried to encourage Ron to learn about the mystery of the observatory as well. And then there's John Grizzly who appears as well. It's all... a little too convenient.
But the icing on the cake is the interaction with the star obsessed idol, who appears in the room.
This is a big one, a very big one, because it answers the question (sort of) of how someone could enter or leave the observatory if the door or dome was not an option. Orihime appears adjacent to the group in the observatory. She doesn't appear from behind them, and with the existence of the chef in the observatory it means that already being in there is impossible. And she doesn't enter the room through the front door as the guests would have spotted her. So how does she get into the room? A question for later on.
Anyways, let's get back to Onodera. During the dinner on the rooftop, she's consistently focused on Ron, even leaving the rooftop shortly after Ron does. Even going the distance as to make an interesting face as Ron leaves. There's a lot of setup for Onodera to have "reason" to be Ron's victim in this case, which just adds to the pile of curiosities.
And finally, we make it to the murder. Up on the rooftop at the time of the gunshot there is: the observatory director, Toto, weird haricut guy, and John. This rules these 4 out indefinitely from the murder of Onodera, as none have left the rooftop since Onodera has.
However, among the culprits alongside Ron there is also the chef, and Orihime. So, let's take a closer look.
Putting the facts together, Onodera is lying on their stomach, having suffered from a gunshot wound, while Ron is laying on his back, unscathed. The biggest thing here is that Onodera is wearing shoes, while Ron is not, and alongside that, the gun is not directly touching Ron.
This is a big one because it provides the possibility that Ron's prints are not on the weapon, and further speaks to his unprepared nature in carrying out this murder.
Look closely, they're lying on top of glass shards. This implies that the lights were shot out prior to the dome opening (at least in the areas that Onodera and Ron are laying in), meaning that the final shot was (most likely) the one that killed Onodera. Building backwards, it is then possible that Onodera was trying to get help before she was murdered. Or, that the murderer wanted to have Isshiki and John discover this scene before Ron could awake.
I think most important though is the dialogue that we got from John earlier on in the episode. When Ron "awoke" from his bout in the testing incident, John states that he was "in a haze". Ron was very much standing upright, with the weapon in his hand. Here though, he's unconscious and on the ground. The disparity in information regarding Ron's state leads me even further towards it being a set up.
Speaking further on John, did you notice he wasn't being a very good detective? I mean, what kind of ace detective turns their back on interaction at a dinner party? He's shown willingly isolated from the group, looking out over the night sky.
And then there's the whole break in scene with the observatory. John's pounding away on the door and making no headroom, but once Isshiki and the director step up, the trio breaks through in one go. Not saying that it's unlikely in any way, but just that it adds to the pile of interesting pieces. John doesn't ask for help breaking down the door, rather, it's the other two that step up.....
And then he keeps going. Stating that an autopsy needs to happen first to confirm the cause of death, but then saying that it's the gun, swiftly taking it into his own possession before Isshiki can examine the weapon.
And then this suspicious response. There's a few possibilities with it. John has discovered something and is hiding it, whatever it is. A false section of wall? A removable vent that exposes a traversable path? It's hard to say, because his detective work is very shallow.
If I were to try and strike up a guess though, it'd be that one of the buttons in the observatory has the ability to open or close some hidden path, as it would help connect why Ron was playing with the buttons in the observatory earlier.
And here's the proof of what I'd said earlier. The door has a physical lock on the interior, so why would Ron need the keys?
It's at this point though that you start to get a different idea from John, with things like this comment.
And then there's Isshiki's point that Ron's acting weird.
The pieces continue to pile up, endlessly high, giving viewers a mountain of information and ideas.
And where does it bring you to? To the point that BLUE, Ron, and John, are testing Isshiki.
I mean, the case of the murder in the most sensible way possible is that Orihime did it. Able to sneak into the observatory without alerting a single person, not present on the rooftop when the gunshots went off, they're the most likely culprit of the bunch. But I don't know if you could call them a culprit, if it's going down how I'm thinking.
Isshiki's not allowed to touch or pronounce Onodera dead, so that greatly increases the odds of it being a fake body of some sort, prepared in advance. The question is, how likely is it that Ron is in on this mystery? I mean, they bring a BLUE detective in that's an expert with locked rooms, and is someone that Ron looks up to. Considering the effort taken to get Ron to go to this observatory, I do wonder about direct involvement. Regardless, if he's not directly involved (so as to avoid giving Isshiki any hints), Orihime has that covered. It's an easy to miss thing, but she is shown holding a wooden club at one point, which would be used as a blunt weapon to knock Ron out.
But yeah, that's my grand theory as to what's going on: Isshiki's being tested by BLUE on this case, to see if they'll take him in. I'm really really excited to see where things go and how they're done, and am quite hopefully that Kusakawa will direct the entirety of this mystery, but that's all conversation for next week.

Anime and Manga Log [06/04/2023]
This week featured the monthly Jump SQ chapters, a brand new Choujin X chapter, and Ron Kamonohashi returning for Part 2. I also got my copy of March Comes in like a Lion Vol.1. I’ve been looking forward to that ever since it was licensed many years ago. A very good week of manga and anime overall. Discussion with spoilers about the following series below the Keep Reading: One Piece 1085 Blue Box 103 Mashle 158 Show-ha Shoten 19 Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective 97 Pokemon Horizons Ep.9 Soaring Sky! Precure Ep. 18
One Piece 1085: One Piece has been going stronger than ever before in recent months. The Straw Hat pirates defeated Kaido in Wano and moved to Egghead. Since then the story has only begun to accelerate at a faster pace. The situation on Egghead is teased to end in a way that will shock the world. Meanwhile, Shanks has taken out Kid, Blackbeard took out Law, Kuma is climbing the Red Line, Garp went to Pirate Island, and now Sabo is finally revealing the second half of the Reverie. The status quo of the world government at beginning to crumble. This week’s chapter expanded on the D lineage in the Nefertari family. Naturally Cobra has learned too much and must die. Poor guy, too smart for his own good. We got a tease to the true form of the elders and even bigger teases to several fundamental story questions. The chapter concludes by showing how Wapol and Vivi ended up together. Oda’s paneling and layouts were oddly clearer than usual this chapter which was refreshing. Sometimes it can be hard to tell what’s going on these days. Its so surreal to essentially be getting a world update intermission in the middle of an arc. Oda is moving all the characters into position for the home stretch of the story. I’m sure the battle for the final Road Poneglyph will be fierce. Hopefully next week we get back to Egghead. I really can’t wait to see what fate befalls our crew. This is the opening act to the sequence of events that will bring the series to its end game scenario. Blue Box 103: This week’s chapter went by in the blink of an eye. It was fast paced as Taiki and Chinatsu rush to meet back at the frozen lake we saw last chapter. The climax starts in Taiki’s POV with him running up to the lake and they both sit down on the frozen lake. Miura used 3 back to back spread pages for the moment. The first spread shows there is nothing between Taiki and Chinatsu any longer. They are isolated in the same space, quite literally without panel boarders, where only the spine crease separates them now. On paper it gives the image of both looking each other in the eye. The second and third spread follows Taiki saying his long awaited confession and the camera zooming out for impact. Its just these two, and his words are the only thing that can be heard. Now the big question is will the confession stick or will something interfere with conveying those words? Knowing the nature of this series I think it will take some time for those words to resonate with Chinatsu. I hope next week starts with the same scene in Chinatsu’s POV. Surely the series can’t be ending soon. At least this is sure to shake the status quo going forward. They might be more self conscious of their living situation. Regardless, good on Taiki for this taking big step forward. Mashle 158: After what felt like a billion years, the final fight comes to a conclusion. I do enjoy Mashle for the most part. I think Mash’s out of this world solutions to overcome supernatural magic is hiralous, and that was of course on full display in the final fight. But I can’t deny this last arc has been a slog to read. Mash underwent power ups twice which severely slowed the plot. My theory is Komoto was told or decided that the manga shouldn’t end while the anime is airing. Anyhow, the fight comes to a close with the power of friendship. Current friends and former foes unite to help Mash deal the final punch to the villain. It was a great moment that culminates the series theme of Mash not only finding a place in a world of magic, but also be wanted and respected by his peers. I can only imagine there’s a 3-5 chapters left at this point. Its always great when a series closes out on a high note. Show-ha Shoten 19: This series is like Bakuman, but about comedy. It focuses on an aspiring Manzai duo learning the ropes of how to develop and perform a routine. Up to this point we’ve seen various rivals emerge which has shown us that our protagonist duo is the underdog in the upcoming competition. They aren’t bad at Manzai, in fact they have a natural talent at winning the crowd over. The biggest weakness however is their lack experience. They have learned something from each encounter to become better at Manzai. This arc was basically a pre-show to the main event. It established another main antagonist to overcome in the finals. The most important event of the chapter was learning about how to land jokes in relation to peers on the same stage and understanding the flow which comes out of that. This pre-show competition finished in a tie. That’s an expected outcome because losing would be demoralizing at this stage and the win should obviously be saved for the main event. This shows how main duo is on par at the bare minimum with the supposed best in their age bracket. Its going to be exciting to see how the finals unfold. While its possible the upcoming competition is the final arc (and Obata tends to not work on long series) I hope the series will continue for some time afterwards. Obata’s artwork is always a real treat. The loose linework gives the characters a lot of fun expressions. It seriously helps to add personality to the Manzai scenes and makes them easier to follow. Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective 97: After taking a short break, Ron Kamonohashi returns to begin part 2. We left off with the defeat of Milo Moriarty on the cruise ship. He wanted to push Ron past his breaking point by forcing him to embrace his lineage and kill someone. However, thanks to the bond of friendship forged with Toto throughout the series, Ron was able to overcome his inner instinct. Milo ultimately sank into the ocean and died.... until actually he washed up on a Moriarty island. I didn’t think for a moment the series was ending. While the cruise ship was the best case to date, it certainly never once came off as the final confirmation. We had barely scratched the surface of the Moriarty family and Milo’s motivations. So begins Part 2 with a setting change to Blue Academy. Ron was finally able to get his graduation diploma, but they wanted him to teach to fill-in for a professor gone missing. Ron of courses passes the buck to Toto. There’s also several classmate characters whom I imagine will be the commentators and friends for this section of the story. I always find it refreshing when this series isn’t in murder case mode. The characters get so much more breathing when their focus isn’t meeting the plot objective of the arc. Nothing much to specifically talk about yet. The new character designs are good as usual from Akira Amano. Hopefully the school setting won’t stick for that long. I don’t think this series is good enough to stay in the same location for long periods of time. I think it would be cool if Ron and Milo had to team up against the threat teased at the end of Part 1 at some point. Pokemon Horizons Ep.9: The gang landed in Paldea and this brings the anime quite close to adapting SV. I was a little surprised when the upcoming episodes revealed they would be going to Paldea since I was under the impression the anime would be doing its own thing. But, I was even more surprised to see a certain name come up in the episode titles. First off, the plot of this episode was Riko getting one last burst of motivation to show that she is committed to the journey ahead. It was silly how she came within a second of figuring out her favorite streamer is on the ship. Dot will most certainly become a trainer down the road as the owner of Quaxly. I also can’t help but wonder why Riko went to school in Kanto (the answer is obviously to keep Ash parallels). Roy didn’t have much to do this week. Now, next week, is the debut of everyone’s favorite Champion Rank trainer Nemona. It looks like Riko might challenge the first gym leader as well. I’ll be curious to see if Riko plans to face off against the gyms throughout the series. If that’s the case, Horizons will most definitely be running for a full 3 years. Lastly, my current theory about the plot is Riko’s mom encouraged her attend school in Kanto so the pendent could be safe. Then the information was leaked to the villain group, and the mom had to hire a bodyguard group to bring Riko home. The mom probably cares more about the pendent than Riko. Her absence in this episode is very suspicious. A new batch of episode titles should be revealed this week which will be very insightful to what’s ahead. Soaring Sky! Precure 18: After what felt like an eternity, Cure Butterfly is here at last. This is once again a history making cure for the franchise being the first “Adult” cure at 18 years old. This moment is long overdue because Ageha not being a cure has gotten in the way of her participating in the battles and plot arcs. Especially have to sit out the recent multi episode trip to Skyland. The debut episode was honestly fantastic and a pure showcase of what makes Ageha so awesome. Having the transformation and attack scene animated by Yuu Yoshiyama was a pleasant surprise as well. I do have a few nitpicks. I don’t think Toei is brave enough yet to give the adult cure a personal struggle to overcome because since this is a kid’s show, adults are role models, especially someone who is just a few years older than the main cast. They have to leave the impression that older teens know what they’re doing in life. Typically becoming a Precure is a moment of change for the character whether that’s coming into their own, recognizing their inner potential, or the need to become better. Ageha transforms just because wouldn’t that be cool within the context of the episode. The girls simply needed one more cure to assist in the battle. In the end Ageha becoming a cure is much deserved. It definitely embodies the spirit of this year’s theme that anyone can be a hero. Someone who is older can still have the heart to become a precure. Ageha x Tsubasa duo attack coming up next week to balance out the team.

I went to Miyashita Park in April, so the new ep of Kamonohashi Ron was particularly fun with that added context. I felt like I'd done the required reading for the mystery. Knowing the layout made it easier to follow their theory about evading the security guard.
#I kept getting lost while looking for that Ghibli fashion shop because the floors and areas the mall was connected were confusing lol#I spent a lot of time there as a result

Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective Episode 5: The Case of The Hand Collector
This series is just so engaging and interesting to me. I mean, back to back seasons with incredibly novel mystery series that features strong and enjoyable direction? Just my kinda thing. But I want to hijack this episode to talk about something really cool with Diomeda: "The In House Style".
So, what do I mean by that? It's not like Ibata has directed and boarded every episode, and they certainly didn't do this one. And you'd be correct, the person that did this episode was Shingo Tamaki, who also did episode 2 and is a long time Diomeda homebody.
I think that, without checking, a lot of people would believe that it was Ibata behind the episode. I mean, it opens up in the exact style that Ibata loves. Closeups that focus on objects, and layouts that emphasize depth through things like obstructions in the foreground.
Hell, Tamaki even mirrors specific ideas that Ibata brings. This clip from the first episode? Tamaki uses the exact same technique this episode.
And this is just sort of the whole episode. The focus on the dichotomy between the closeups and the more spacious shots is still ever present, and does consistently well to draw attention to the smaller details that the episode wants to provide to viewers.
Lastly, something that I've been really becoming aware of lately: photographic direction. When you think "style" for an anime, you probably split it up into character design, animation/direction, and the loose term of "visuals". That massive third piece is under the purview of the director of photography, and produces really important pieces. Let me explain.
Chromatic Aberration is a core piece to the visual identity of closeups in Ron. It's meant to provide not quite a voyeuristic feeling, but like you're looking through pictures taken with a camera. Like you're getting an intentional look at something. That chromatic aberration is brought to you by the director of photography and is part of the aspect of composition in a series. Just take a look at what it adds to the scenes.
It's good, it's damn good, and it uses Magenta and Green for the aberration, as it should.
So all that said, Ron is still incredibly fun, and I'd argue is incredibly good. They keep a tight list of KAs and other staff, have used a total of 2 boarders/directors for 5 episodes of anime, and because of that they all look great. Kamonohashi Ron and Diomeda really aren't getting the credit they deserve for delivering a production such as this one.
