Kallus is such a funny character to search for in the fandom sphere bc there's such a wide variety of opinions on him. Half of the fandom seems to either think his arc was the best redemption seen in Star Wars, while the other half is convinced it was the worst writing mankind has ever witnessed.
Personally, I think it was... fine? It's good when keeping in mind that Rebels is a kids cartoon. But it could have been a lot better, if he was in a more adult-oriented series. I'd love to see focus on his shift in loyalties, how it started to form. But I'd also love to see a deep dive on why he was so loyal to the Empire. S1 Kallus seemed far more devoted than the average citizen who joined the Imperial forces to make ends meet. Kallus enjoyed what he did, and I want to know why. Did it make him feel powerful to prey on others? And why did it take being the one preyed on for him to realize the harm he was causing? He has potential for some absolutely amazing stories, given those who utilize him are able to give it the nuance it deserves. It's far too easy to write him off as someone who 'never actually subscribed' to the Empire's beliefs, which makes him sympathetic. But that's lame!!! That's boring! And it's out of character!!! S1 and early S2 Kallus is the same person as S3 and S4 Kallus. His redemption shouldn't forget that. He doesn't have to be forgiven. And I'd love to see a story where he isn't forgiven and he has to deal with it.
#all questions asked in this post are rhetorical#this isn't exactly a kallus crit/ical post so im not tagging it as such#just saw a post that was about kallus and i kinda agreed but had s lot to say#and i didnt wanna co-opt the post bc my stuff was off topic#so ur getting this hehe#its a hard topic in the fandom tho bc while theres not a lot of direct fighting about it...#its still something people seem to be fairly divided about#that and its hard to find kallus posts that dont have a kalluz///eb slant to them#kallus' redemption should not be treated like it was 100% z/ebs doing#you can see the hints in early s2 in how he reacts to certain commands#and i think kallus being the one to come to these comclusions himself is important#bc a lot of it is his fault. he is the oppressor and the villain#and z/eb as a victim of that doesnt have the responsibility to convince kallus he was wrong#overall i just think a more slow climb to the change in loyalties would be nice to see#as well as a less b&w approach to it in the material#the ghost crew forgave him too quickly and his change in demeanor from s3 to s4 was a bit awkward#but thats stuff id want to see expanded on in like a book#the show not expanding on it is fine bc it would distract from the main focus of the show#as well as bore the kids watching#star wars#star wars rebels#alexsandr kallus#agent kallus#if i see anyone tagging this as kalluz///eb ill fight
