Year in Review

Yes I’m posting this way into January. HOWEVER, time isn’t real. I started making this post in Dec and then left it in my drafts, which is something I do pretty much every year! So let’s pretend ‘this year’ means 2020

talk about movies this year

I work in a cinema so usually watch a lot of movies, but that hasn’t happened as much this year! I managed to miss out on two films because of lockdown 1 + 2 - And Then We Danced and Saint Maud, which I still really want to see!

My fav films I watched this year are The Lighthouse, Parasite, David Copperfield, My Own Private Idaho, Ema (I guess, the plot was wild but the production is great), Shirley, Sunset Boulevard and Nausicaa

talk about television this year

GUYS. It’s taken 6 years but I have nearly finished The X-Files! Or, I’ve made it to season 9. I’ve been a bit put off because I hate Doggett but Reyes is cool and there’s still a lot of fun eps! Other faves from this year: Drag Race UK, What We Do in the Shadows, Succession, I May Destroy You, Feel Good, BoJack Horseman, Schitt’s Creek, Ratched, and Pose (not from this year but I finally watch s2 and loved it!)

talk about books this year

I have literally read 3 books this year: Convenience Store Woman, Song of Solomon and The Body Keeps the Score. All good, esp the latter 2. I bought a bunch of books just before lockdown but then my brain dissolved into a fine mush. I’ve just started The Brothers Karamazov, which I’m enjoying! I didn’t realise Dostoyevsky could be funny.

My birthday is at the end of March so I spent it essentially alone (my housemates were around but they don’t count), and I spent several hours making and icing my birthday cake.

At the beginning of lockdown I got into making myself nice breakfasts of waffles or pancakes with lots of fruit/yoghurt/honey.

I was lucky enough to do a London trip at the end of Feb (and met @angelsofashes IRL!) so I got to look at a bunch of art then, although I think just went to the White Cube Bermondsey and the Tate Modern extension which I hadn’t got round to visiting before.

OH and in the National Portrait Gallery I discovered young Charles Dickens is my doppelganger which I still find hilarious.

something that made you proud this year

I finished my Graphic Arts MA in January and got a distinction! I worked so hard on my final project so it was nice to have that recognised even though it’s essentially meaningless. I also was lucky enough to have a final show.

Other than that, proud of everyone for making it through I guess!

I’ve been listening to podcasts all the time (as a substitute for actual company I guess!) Literally one of the few things keeping me sane. Some recs:

2. describe your favorite pair of socks

i have a bit of an affinity for strange socks dsflkjhf a couple highlights are: pair of white socks with the london tube map on them, purple socks with pictures of kale on them that say ‘they put kale on everything these days, even socks’, yellow socks that say ‘kick this day in its sunshiney ass’, and a mismatched pair that are green and orange and have brocolli and carrots on them and say ‘eat your veggies’ on the bottom

27. do you have any keychains on your home or car keys? describe them!

my keys are very sparse lol. there’s a flat plastic shiba inu keychain with a brown shiba inu on one side and a black shiba inu on one side (i got it from an artist alley at a comic con and it gave me subtle dnp vibes lol), a purple/green dimpl fidget keychain (12/10 rec i want to put one on everything i own and before i knew they made keychains i saw the baby version at my store and i was like so close to buying it lmao), a key tag from my college’s key finder program (that i should probably remove tbh considering i dont go there anymore), and my two house keys.

38. what’s one show you watch or musician you listen to that your friends know nothing about?

ORPHAN BLACK it is literally my favourite tv show, it is the perfect length, it’s canadian content, tatiana maslany is my wife, and none of my friends even remember what its called.

rainbow kitten surprise. despite them having the single gayest name i have ever heard i have not been able to convince anyone i know to listen to them. also the front bottoms, but that’s more because its a very specific type of music that i think you need to imprint on at 12 years old in order to think its good (affectionate)

1. if you could travel one place in the world where would you travel?

New Orleans. I’ve never been and I always have wanted to.

2. what do you do in your free time away from sims?

ummm.. aside from working....gardening (as much as is possible when you’ve got a 12x6 balcony to work with). I went to Home depot today actually and got some cherry and grape tomatoes, cilantro, dill, red bell peppers, mint, kale, and jalepeno plants + some colorful annual flowers for fun. sooo I’m excited about that.

3. what other games do you play besides the sims?

None really. I like playing chess or doing sudoku puzzles while I’m on the elliptical but I don’t think those count. lol

4. how tall are you?

5′6″, apparently that’s above average height but I don’t feel particularly tall.

5. one random interest of yours?

I love playing armchair detective, I’m love me some true crime. also I love musical theater.

6. current favourite bands or artists?

I like a lot, I wouldn’t say I have any current favorites because I hardly keep up with anything and listen to the same stuff. I always love me some 70s and 80s music a la the beegees/andy gibb, Paul Simon, Prince, etc. Modernly I enjoy the black keys, cage the elephant, arctic monkeys, Oliver tree, asap rocky, umm idk i hate this question

7. something you’re looking forward to?

Nothing. nah I’m being dramatic. Short term: I’m excited for summer and going for long walks/bike rides on the lakefront trail. Long term: I’m excited to go to restaurant/bar and have a fucking draft beer even though I’m not a big drinker and I’m generally a homebody.

8. current favourite films?

My forever top films: goodfellas, inglorious basterds, almost famous, red dragon, Chicago, shawshank redemption, oh brother where art thou, big fish, ...god i could go on forever I love so many movies.

9. what food could you not live without?

coffee if that counts as a food. caffeine withdrawal is a bitch. If i had to pick an actual food, probably tortilla chips

10. favourite series (book or movie series)?

I don’t have a favorite book or movie series so I’m going answer my favorite TV series instead because i love tv so much and everyone should watch these shows: the wire, the leftovers (seriously go watch this right now it is so weird and so amazing and so perfect from start to finish), girls, futurama, always sunny, true detective, the sopranos, shameless (though I haven’t watched recently since emmy rossum left-- as a southside chicagoan it’s close to my heart), SVU, the good place, B99, parks and rec (anything michael schur has had a hand in basically), breaking bad, narcos, american horror story, forensic files, disappeared... again this list is endless I love TV.

Pictured below is German “goth” band X Mal Deutschland, a band that has stayed under my radar for quite a long time, and I don’t even know why. A few weeks ago I already played there song “Qual” and in this episode I’m spinning probably their best known song, the classic “Incubus Succubus”, a song that is featured on most, if not all eighties new wave compilations and somehow it only reached my wiling ears a few months ago. It’s strange how things go. Recently, in one of the past episodes, I admitted that I was also late to the party when it comes to the famous Bristol scene (bands such as Flying Saucer Attack, Movietone, Crescent...). And it’s not cool to admit that only a few years back I discovered the first two records of The Gun Club: I remember a face full of incomprehension when I admitted that to one of the regulars at The Pit's, but that didn’t stop me from singing along to Sex Beat when The Paint Fumes covered it when they played Kortrijk. Anyway, we’re at #42, still at home in the bedroom and to be honest I can’t wait to go back to the Quindo radio studio and spin some REAL vinyl for you. In this episode a short punk intro with a great song from The Maggots, and then we travel around the world with Swedish punk, Italian post punk, German goth and Spanish shoegaze, Also, a short chapter of “slowcore” (I think this is one of the most misleading “genre names” in music history), an industrial punch in the face from Qual, and a bunch of Swedish ànd Belgian noise. We end up with the newest long track by local beat sister Onrust! And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for this show. Enjoy!

Is anyone going to be surprised if I start with God’s Own Country? I watched it again the other night and it remains as breathtaking as when I saw it in the cinema. Watch to have your heart wrenched by two stellar lead performances, a strong supporting cast, and a tiny sheep.

Mystery Train I also loved a lot. There’s no explaining it. It’s sort of about a bunch of people who don’t know each other being haunted by Elvis? Oh and Joe Strummer and Screaming’ Jay Hawkins are in it.

Sing Street is also good fun, if you like 80s music. It’s about a guy who starts a band and he goes through basically every major music style trying to find his identity.

lyra: what is the last thing you ate?

Kale salad with roasted brussels and sweet potato.

orion: what’s your favorite candy?

Peanut M&Ms, assuming I can’t say ‘those chocolate cinnamon almond things @almostliving84 sends me every Christmas because she’s too good to me’.

Sand and Sea by @denialanderror This floof is too fun and I love the patented Bumbles sass. Summary: It’s too hot to do anything but you have the marvelous idea of taking a trip to the beach. However, Bucky just likes to be difficult, it seems.

Make Me by @marvelatmytrash This light-hearted one is so sweet and funny. I’m obsessed with this idea. I giggled the whole time. Summary: You catch Bucky in a compromising position and are a little less than helpful in getting your boyfriend out of his sticky situation.

I’ve got my love to keep me warm by @sugardaddytonystark A gorgeous holiday fic that is a beautiful balance of sweet and sultry. It literally feels like reading a dream. It’s just so gorgeously worded ugh. You need to read this. Summary: Outside the window, in the city square, the bulbs on the Christmas tree are still twinkling, rainbow lights reflecting off and refracting through the glass. A growing sheet of white snow is covering the ground and everything beyond the diner is ice-covered and frozen. But inside, it’s warm, and the air is thick with the smell of cinnamon and stew. James is here and your heart is pounding, stomach fluttering, and it feels good to feel this way, even if it’s not reciprocated.

A Freshly Brewed Storm by @doublestufthoreo I adore this fic. It is fun and not quite fluff. It looks at another side of Steve, what daily life Steve might look like. What adjusting might look like. Summary: Yeah, he’s is Captain America — he’s supposed to be the punctual one. It doesn’t stop him from running a coffee shop with terrible timings. Despite it, he does manage to bring back a regular.

Smooth Criminal by @redgillan This fic is so fucking adorable I cannot make the words do the word thing to explain how much I love it. It is so fluffy but still cute and silly and fun so it’s not just like tooth rotting fluff. I’m obsessed with it. Summary: Bucky’s a cop and got called to a crime scene to arrest a criminal but he realizes the criminal is the person he’s dating.

Pool Balls and Underpants by @bitsandbobsandstuff Listen. This fic is so sassy and adorable, you should really read it like yesterday. I cannot handle the banter and the tension is just so flawless. Summary: Bucky offers to teach you how to play pool, but he ends up in a slightly awkward predicament.

Saving him might just mean condemning yourself.

What We Deserve by @helaodinsdottirr I just can’t get enough of Jess’s writing, alright? She will break your heart with this one and then give you back a taped up ball of glowing happy. Summary: When Steve goes to Bucky’s apartment in Bucharest he finds you while Bucky’s gone out to the market. Massive angst and fluff ensues.

Thicker Than Water by @nataliarxmanxva This concept is incredible and I love how Sophia weaves bits of hinted at stories from the Cap movies into this story. It’s so great! And the reader character is strong but flawed and you just don’t know what’s going to happen! Summary: Being born and raised in a HYDRA family means you must be a devoted member to the organisation, carrying out orders with blind obedience. But after being assigned the suicide mission of being the Winter Soldier’s handler, you slowly start to question where your loyalties truly lie.

The Night Ahead by @helaodinsdottirr I love all of Jess’s writing. She is a master of angst and building dramatic tension. She can weave a story so full of surprises and genius turns. Summary: Bucky came out of cryostasis after just a few months. With the help of Steve, he’s trying to piece the fractions of his mind back together. While flipping through old HYDRA files, he remembers something from his days as the winter soldier: you.

Through His Eyes by @sebbytrash This. Series. Is fan-fucking-tastic. So much angst, like truckloads on all sides but it’s so beautiful and it makes so much sense that it doesn’t feel like overload. I can’t get enough of this one no matter where it goes. Summary: Bucky arrives at the compound to start afresh but you and him have a somewhat colorful past, colorful being that you met him once before as The Winter Soldier and it did not go well. New beginnings, yeah? If you can learn to forgive.

Barnes’ Books by @marvel-lucy Fantastically angsty and soft. A lovely little dream world about a down on her luck character who stumbles into a friendship with a bookstore owner and later a relationship with his son.

Winter Shadow by @marvel-lucy Intense and mysterious. You fall into the hands of the avengers as a prisoner, they soon discover that you have been the Winter Soldier’s silent partner all along.

Surrender by @marvel-ash Holy shit this is one where I honestly never know what’s going to happen in the next part. It’s so mysterious and gah! I love it. Summary: As a flight attendant, you’d traveled all over the world. You’d never thought you could meet someone who could take you somewhere you hadn’t already been.

Divided by @marvelatmytrash Ok this is so fantastically done. I don’t even have the words. Basically B injects the reader as a new character in Civil War and it’s incredible how seamlessly she fits her in and how hard B worked to keep to the script/storyline. It’s amazing. Summary: You have always been one of the best agents at the Avenger’s compound, now you come face to face with the Winter Soldier and find yourself drastically underprepared.

Melodies by @denialanderror Pianist Bucky smut. That’s all that needs to be said here, I think. Summary: Unable to fall back asleep, you decide to wander around the tower when you hear music coming from somewhere. But it’s 3am, no one should be awake so late.

Heart On The Line by @sugardaddytonystark The smoothest story you can find with the most delicious smut weaved into a genuinely entertaining story. I love this fic. I love a lot of Dahlia’s fics. Summary: You and Bucky had your differences in college, but now you need a place to stay and he needs a roommate, and in order to make ends meet, you two start a phone sex line together.

Worth Fighting For by @serzhantkris A gorgeous group of series. Full of angst and action. Beautifully slow build. I’ve read a few of her other one shots that are fantastic! She writes incredibly insightful angst. Summary: When your brother is drafted into WWII, you do the unthinkable to save him and your family: you take his place, in secret.

The Witching Hour by @soldatbarnes Such a fun and terrifying horror series! Oh my god I binged this in one night. Fantastic push and pull of no this can’t be real to no, fuck no, I would not put up with this! The perfect play of rational mind dealing with irrational occurrences. It was so entertaining. Summary: You and your husband Bucky move into your dream home, a few weeks after your marriage. You had no idea what you’d be in for.

When Everything’s Made to be Broken (I just Want You to Know Who I Am) by @cassiopeiassky You listen to me! Read this fic and read it right now! Binge the shit out of it! It’s amazing! I LOVE that it takes an ordinary reader and puts her in extraordinary circumstances. It is full of angst and fluff and violence and tension. Literally everything you could want in a fic. It’s perfect and so worth the read. Cass is a master of slow burn and drama – my two favorite things! Summary: When you inadvertently become a witness to a murder and are suddenly a target for death, it takes a specially skilled soldier and his team to keep you and your family safe.
