After the anime was a big success, kakifly, the original mangaka, did a pair of short sequel series around 2012. One, the aptly named K-On! College, followed the older girls into college, while the other, K-On! High School, followed Azusa and her efforts to keep the original club going. One of the new characters in the High School story is Mugi’s former maid/childhood friend, Saito Sumire, who eventually reveals their relationship.

Granted, I’m overselling it a bit. They just think of each other like sisters. Who read yuri manga with each other. And hide their intimacy with each other from their parents. And talk about eloping together to escape their families once they’re both legally adults. It’s not explicitly a romantic relationship, but it’s pretty hard to deny, especially given Mugi's established enthusiasm for yuri scenarios. Certainly a lot more concrete than anything the original series did

The story never really does anything with it though. We never even get the chance to see Mugi and Sumire interact outside of a few flashbacks. Both sequels had some interesting ideas, but ultimately they weren’t able to recapture the magic of the original, and ended up being fairly short.

Summarizing K-On! forevermore as "the story of four women of color, one of whom struggles with disability, and their growing friendship as they explore the collective musical heritage of their people"
