And so we close out "Sky" September TWO FOR TUESDAYS with a German Netflix-core action vampire horror plane movie Blood Red Sky! If you were ever wondering what an Asylum movie would look like with a bigger budget, than this one's for you folks. (And that's mostly a compliment! s/o Flight 666)

Also — and this is really neither here nor there — I felt like the movie poster (above) gives too much away, though that was probably a Netflix thumbnail algorithm decision accident more than anything.

I don't really have a ton to say about this. The plot is ridiculous but mostly fun (a 'good' vampire/mom needs to stop a bunch of capitalist terrorists from killing everyone because they want to get rich off shorting the stock market (!)/unleashing the vampire plague onto the world). It's probably thirty minutes too long. It plays fast and loose with the rules of vampire lore as well as flight dynamics, though I'm hardly an expert on either. The vamps are more like 28 Days Later style zombs which was an interesting wrinkle, as is the aforementioned non-jihad terrorism angle (which feels like a plot for its own movie and not the minor detail that it is here). It's totally fine.

I Made the Right Choice... Didn't I? - Kaylyn Drabble Pt. 1

"...lyn.... Kaylyn!" The voice snapped her out of her thoughts as she wiped her head in the direction of the other. Aslan sighed and gave her a sad smile before pointing to her fish. "If you don't pay attention then you're gonna burn your dinner."

"Huh? Oh shit!" She looked down and sure enough, her arms had dropped a little, moving the fish too close to the fire. She quickly pulled it out, checking the cook on it. Thankfully it wasn't too far gone, she could still eat it.

"Thinking about that Companion still? The one we ran into?" It had been a month since Kaylyn left Whiterun to follow Aslan on his travels. This is what she always wanted, ever since she was a little girl and Aslan started coming around. It was even the reason she followed him to Skyrim. So why was this heaviness and sadness in her chest? It only grew after their run-in with an old friend of hers and they told her about what had happened since she left and what everyone was up to. Her absence was felt by them but they had to continue on as a Companion's job is never done.

Kaylyn picked at her fish, focusing on her chewing instead of answering Aslan. Another sigh rang from him. "Kay... there is nothing wrong with missing your friends. I missed you every time I had to leave." He nudged her with his foot, trying to coax a smile from her.

Instead, the Breton shoved the rest of her fish into her mouth, quickly eating it. "I'm going to bed." She stood up and went into her tent.

Aslan sighed and looked up at the stars. "Gods help that girl. She needs guidance."

A few days later...

It was Aslan's turn to ride Setti while Kaylyn rode in the cart. She was sitting propped against a bag of supplies, trying to read her book. Vilkas had made good on his promise to teach her how to read and he made her promise to keep up with her lessons while out on the road. It was slow but she was making progress. Whenever she struggled on a word, she thought back to Vilkas's soft voice as he explained how to sound the word out. Suddenly the words on the page became blurry as her eyes lost focused, her daydream taking her further away.

Her mind drifted to her training sessions with Vilkas or when he would yell out "advice" to her as she trained with Farkas or Aela. The days they sat together, bent over a book as she struggled with the words or over a piece of paper as she learned how to spell and write. To the time she sought out comfort and safety in his room. To the night they spent among beautiful flowers, looking up at the night sky.

She had other moments with Companions. Meaningful conversations with Viviana and Aela, her missions with Farkas, laughing with Henrik, or her music lessons with Signe. Yet her mind decided to focus on Vilkas more than anyone else.

A hard bump in the road jostled her out of her thoughts and her face turned bright red as she realized just how long she had spent daydreaming about those moments. In a rush of embarrassment, Kaylyn flung her book away, as if it was to blame for her thoughts.

"Woah, hey now." Aslan chuckled and stopped Setti, hopping off the horse. "Don't take your frustration out on the book. It's not its fault you are struggling with some of the words." He picked up the book and dusted it off, going back to the cart. "Hmm... Kaylyn?"

The concern in his voice shocked him and she realized her vision was still blurred as she tried to take in his face. Tears swam in her eyes and the Breton quickly rubbed them away. "I'm fine! Reading's just hard. Like you said." Before Aslan could say anymore, Kaylyn was already climbing out of the cart. "You've ridden for long enough. Take a break." She climbed onto Setti and waited for Aslan to get settled before starting off down the trail again.

Her plane is then, of course, hijacked. All of this is a slow build to a reveal that you can see coming from a mile off her ailment isn’t an ailment; she’s a vampire trying desperately to suppress the monster within, and…

Dr. Ra:

I bring Nash back in the most basic way trying not to set off anything coming out of his genes. He reminded me so much of Nemo I felt more numbed guilt. It was easier to abuse him when I hated Lor'Ra enough to betray them all. Or maybe it was having all the his memories in my head to be more sympathetic and regretful. Now they're both dead when I tried to take it all back. I should have never did it.

"Nash...? What is it?? Why are you so upset?"

He was crying and not making much sense .. like his father..

The kind if despair felt all too much, I wonder if he posioned himself it seemed more like a reasonable theory of what happened.

Then he finely has enough clarity to bash the light panel above him on the table. My face viser goes over my eyes so I don't get cut by the glass.

"Ahh.. not helping kid! If you cant tell me I cant help you!"

(Nash): "No light no light..."

He doesn't want to recharge the Scintille crystals in his body that makes the energy?.. not that there is alot left after he posioned himself..

"Then...put the moonstone in a ...tooth filling or something...earing? DONT EAT IT!"

I snap at how crazy this was. Maybe I need to think of him not as the same case as Nemo after all. It passed.. generically..

....what the hell did I make???!

Borin comes in and I go into bitch mode cause I felt so guilty about..all of this.

"Prince??? I..brought him back...like you said.."

I bow a little bit but he seemed... upset. Maybe Soren got taken..

(Borin): "Oh good you're alive, now I can RING YOUR STUIPD NECK DID YOU SET ME UP!!!!????!!!"

(Nash): *looks surprised then goes with it hoping Borin kills him* "Maybe I did...did you really think you could trust me???" He tries to hiss but Borin shoves the medical table shoved backwards and Nash tangled up in the ivs with a painful yelp.

(Borin): "HOW DARE YOU BETRAY ME FOR THOSE SAVAGES!! I'M GOING TO MAKE YOU WISH YOU WERE DEAD!!!"

"Borin I JUST put him back together, please errr!!" I look alarmed at how violent he was being..so unusual for Borin....

My worms - that still are enhanced with Perry's venom - easily detect the posion in Borin's system. But it was different then what Gwen got. It was effecting his mind.. he seemed unrationaly violent.....

I should..probbaly...do something but I get a Mhy space message and I send it to my face visor to block out deranged Borin traumatizing Nash more so then he already was obviously in the background.

"Settie!! Where are you?!!" I try to hold back my glee despite the terrible scene I found myself in.

(Settie) :"I dont know!!? In a cave..somewhere..like theres big furry spiders outside.."

"Is Perry there??"

(Settie): "No he left hours ago...and I went on MHY SPACE and HE HAS AN ACOUNT. WITH MY LAST NAME..LIKE I AM CLEARLY LISTED AS HIS SON. I THINK HE KNEW ALL ALONG! I GOTTA GET OUT OF HERE!"

...yeah.... no one in the resistance checked their 'congratulations' on your clone child message. I TRIED.

I never knew if Lor'Ra hid her dirty secret so good or if everyone just thought it was fake news and didn't even bother to open it. Spam inbox? I dont know. I really tried to get him out of here..before I got..attached..

17.11.2019, Ocho Rios, Jamaika

Die Nacht war wieder sehr kurz, vermutlich bin ich noch nicht ganz unten. Die Zeitverschiebung beträgt 6 Std., d. h. bei uns 03:00Uhr, bei Euch 09:00 Uhr. Ich hoffe, das legt sich noch etwas. Ansonsten hab ich noch 12 Bücher zu lesen :-)

Gegen 05:30 sind wir aufgestanden um mit einem Kaffee an Deck den Sonnenaufgang über das angesteuerte Jamaika zu genießen. Gegen 07:00 frühstückten wir heute im Ankelmanns (Buffet Restaurant).

Vielleicht noch kurz zu den Ausflügen; Ich hatte bereits ab Juni 2019 begonnen alles auf eigene Faust im Voraus zu buchen. Wir mögen einfach nicht diese Art von geführten Touren, bei denen 50 Leute einem hochgehaltenen Schild hinterher laufen. In Ocho Rios sollte es Stephen werden, ein weißer Rastafari, der ausgezeichnetes Deutsch spricht und so richtig schwarzen Humor hat. Wir trafen ihn am Parkplatz vor dem Kai, er war mit Bvb T-Shirt (ich meine schon den Fußball Club und nicht wie Setti vermutete, die Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe:-)) und weißem Bart nicht zu übersehen. Wir waren insgesamt 12, also sehr überschaubar, und stiegen in Stephens klapprigen Bus, der bei 30 Grad Morgentemperatur herrlich klimatisiert war. Unser erstes Ziel waren die Dunns River Falls; Ein bis zum/ins Meer gehende Wasserfall mit 800m Höhe und einem Neigungswinkel von 70-90 Grad. Mit unseren hübschen Badeschuhen gingen wir zunächst über unzählige Treppen zum Meer hinunter um uns dann durch den Wasserfall auf dem Weg nach oben zu machen. Zum Anfang dachten wir noch wat‘n Scheiß mit 25$ Eintritt....aber was war das für eine Gaudi, wir sind geklettert, teilweise wieder gerutscht, ins Wasser gefallen usw. wir haben so gelacht! Wir brauchten 1:15Std um oben wieder anzukommen. Wir waren zwar klatschnass aber es hat riesigen Spaß gemacht. Die Tour ging gegen 11 Uhr weiter ins Hinterland, raus vom Touri - Trubel. Wir erfuhren sehr viel über Land und Leute, Zuckerrohranbau, Und Marihuana. Ganz oben in den Bergen angekommen, hielten wir an einer jamaikanischen Kneipe und probierten diverse Rumsorten. Unsere Truppe wurde immer lustiger. Neben Setti stand ein riesengroßer Rasta Man, der sich ganz genüsslich einen Joint drehte. Er blies Ihr dann mehrfach den Rauch mit einer Wolke ins Gesicht und lächelte dann mit seinen drei Zähnchen. Setti hat gar nichts verstanden. Er wollte Ihr einen Shot (schreibt man das so?) geben. Jedenfalls war sie ziemlich benebelt. Anschließend ging es weiter zu einem typisch jamaikanischem Bauernmarkt. Viele Obst- und Gemüsesorten kannte ich noch gar nicht. Wir tranken Kokosnuss Wasser, aßen das Fruchtfleisch...manches probierte ich, einiges ließ ich aus. Authentischer ging es nicht. Danach fuhren wir zu einem landestypischen Grill „Restaurant“ in dem nur einheimische aßen. Der Grill war interessant; auf ca 50, nicht ganz so dicken Holzstämmen wurden Hühnchen&Co gegrillt. Mit Maniok Brot und Jamaike „Stripe“ Bier, war es ein köstliches Essen. Gegen 15:30 Uhr erreichten wir wieder unser Schiff. Stephen erhielt für die ganze Tour 50$ pro Person. Wir gaben ihm zusätzlich 5$ Trinkgeld. Nachdem wir geduscht haben, genossen wir ein Gläschen Roséwein an der Außenalster. Nach dem Abendessen verließ unser Schiff den Hafen von Ocho Rios. Es geht in den Süden von Jamaika nach Montego Bay.

Reaction: ± There were pretty good reviews for this movie and having watched it, I can make the same kind of recommendations. It’s a horror movie pretty well done in its own right, not campy and done with enough gravitas to allow the audience to suspend their disbelief. While the critics reviews are a mixed bag about the quality of the story and what should be the focus of the tale, personally i find there’s a good balance between horror and suspense and heart that makes the movie an entertaining watch. 

[SPOILERS AHEAD] I mean, despite the summary on Netflix, the promotional material kind of makes no secret that there are vampires involved, so there’s really little mystery to it. But the suspense is maintained by the development of the story with the hijackers and the vampirism that she’s constantly fighting with. But man, watching it the whole way through, it’s easy to see that the real hero of this story with the heart and the grit to get shit done is Elias. Damn, kid. 

Memorable aspect of the movie: + Genre. Train to Busan meets Snakes on a Plane meets a bit of Into the Night. + Costume and make up. I did quite enjoy the prosthetics and effects for the vampire look.
