I started painting Miniatures and I absolutely love how my Tyrantrum turned out. I probably would have used a different shade for the Tyrunt to make it less silvery, but eh. I used what I had. I'm still thrilled I got these done though!

More kaijumon stuff! The classic guardian trio Anguirus, Varagon, and Varan which i personally would think of as possible starters. Along with them theres also Orga and Megalon! two more big bois joining this pocket sized monster list.

Let’s Talk About Pokemon - Eternatus
Tumblr media Tumblr media
890: Eternatus
Our final Pokemon for the time being is not even a “third version mascot”, really, since by now we know the DLC is taking the reigns of where a traditional third version would've been. So it kinda is the first Pokemon more or less designed specifically to be a big bad final boss monster of some description, arguably even moreso than Ultra Necrozma.
And it most certainly fits the bill, with it being the new largest non-Dynamaxed Pokemon of all time, finally a Pokemon bigger than good ol' Wailord. Eternatus is said to be an entity from space, and the source of all of Dynamax's power that allows Pokemon to grow super massive. But I suppose that's their usual excuse for why a gimmick can't exist outside of the region it's from, since Z-Crystals originated from Necrozma and now Dynamax Band's Wishing Stars from Eternatus.
Eternatus is also a source of a “Doomsday” event called the Darkest Day that Zacian and Zamazenta were tasked with ending. It's also why Zacian and Zamazenta themselves are actually incapable of Dynamaxing, supposedly since they're the force meant to stop this Darkest Day event that causes all the Pokemon in the region to Dynamax like it's a Godzilla fighting game. Though curiously, Eternatus can't Dynamax while under a trainer's command, either.
Eternatus itself is a Poison/Dragon type, becoming Pokemon's first-ever Poison Legendary. Though nothing immediately communicates “Poison” about it... so that aspect is a letdown, for sure. The only thing really all that “Poison” about it is being kinda dead-looking, just on account of being a giant skeleton. And it's a pretty well rendered skeleton! Most of its body is a giant spinal column with a ribcage down the middle that surrounds a little vortex, which seems to be the source of its Dynamax power. It's more or less a living skeleton as if to imply it's Poison type because it didn't always look like this, but rather its physical body was eroded away due to being irradiated. It's also implied the Dynamax energy itself is some form of weird alien toxin. It's Poison for sure... you just gotta read into it real hard.
It's also neat it a kinda-insectoid sorta way? Bugs are already sorta skeletal, just on account of their skeleton being on the outside, so that much checks out. Eternatus also has three pairs of eyes illuminating through its face shield thing, which makes its head look a little bit like a Dragon's Head Caterpillar. Plus its weird antenna-like claws look neat as well. And of course, it's hard to go wrong with black and red. All around, Eternatus is a really cool design only really marred by its Poison-ness being on the down-low side. It is a clever way to make a game about radiated mutants without actually using nuclear radiation as a theme, given such a subject is very sensitive in a lot of places. Japan especially. In fact, I doubt it's coincidence that a form of Poke-atomic-radiation is a direct cause for the Kaijumon while the original concept of Godzilla was that it's a giant atomic mutant.

Eternamax Eternatus:
And as a first in the series... we have a Pokemon that is entirely unobtainable, and is likely to stay that way given its base stat total is in the thousands. Moreso meaning Eternamax Eternatus here was solely designed to be the final boss of the game. Although, when Eternatus uses Eternabeam, it at least temporarily turns into its Eternamax form for the attack animaion.
Eternamax Eternatus definitely fits the bill for an otherworldly monster, becoming a giant swirling serpent with five heads arranged to make it look like a giant hand. The whole arm coiling around the vortex that was once in its chest. It is rather simple in terms of body structure, just being an especially long arm. There's mostly just a ton of detail on top of what is essentially a five-headed snake, but just enough to keep it from being too overbearing.
And I'm far from the first person to suspect Eternatus here definitely has some “Ultra Beast” energy to it. What with a weird, otherworldy design and a bit of an abstract angle to its Eternamax form. While it may not be an Ultra Beast in-universe (though I can dream), it definitely may have been designed to be one. Evidently, the Ultra Beasts were a concept originally intended for Galar, but they were bumped forward to be released in Gen 7 instead since their interdimensional origins better suited Alola's overall theme of humans introducing invasive species. Since y'know, what could possibly be more invasive than a monster from another dimension? Eternatus very well could be a leftover of the Ultra Beasts in Galar.
It could still very well be a lowkey Ultra Beast. It definitely fits the aesthetic, its battle theme is pretty similarly alien sounding, and it has similar swooshy sounds in its cry, just like how all the UBs shared a swooshy noise in their cries. Plus you could reasonably say any Pokemon that isn't native to “Earth” is an Ultra Beast of some description. PLUS... why else would Macro Cosmo, the game’s villainous team, be producing their own Type: Nulls?
Tumblr media
Personal Score: 9/10
Tumblr media
And that be all of them. Part 1 of Gen 8's retrospective will be out... whenever it's done. Which I'll try to make soon-ish. And I'll probably make a Part 2 when all the DLC is said, reviewed, and done.
