“Because it’s my job.” Tracing the edge of their blade with a fingernail, Kaira shifts their gaze from the blade to Keisuke, and they simply can’t help but frown underneath their mask. He doesn’t deserve this, not in their eyes, but that’s not their choice to make. All they can do is kill as instructed. Kill this person, slaughter that person, silence these people. It’s always the same damn thing. It has been for two or three years now.

And yet this one hurts. Why? It’s not like they haven’t killed anyone like him before, and yet there’s a foreign weight on their shoulders now, something pulling at their heartstrings. They’re tempted to just shove the blade into their own chest to be rid of that feeling, but even they’re aware that it would do nothing but hurt and kill them.

Then again, death is just an old friend. Maybe it’d be worthwhile. 

“You’re more fortunate than most of my marks,” they offer instead, turning the knife so it points away from them. They hadn’t even realized they had already been holding the tip toward their heart, honestly. “Anyone else would have had their throats slit before they could react. But I figured you deserved better than that. That you should at least know who and why.”

Now they move closer, ever so slowly, just to press the blade’s tip to his throat, eyes narrowing. “Apparently, you’re a danger to the boss’s grand scheme, whatever it may be. How or why that conclusion came to be, I don’t know. But I can at least do you the favor of making it quick. The orders were simply to eliminate you-- no need to draw it out. So? would you prefer that? Or will you fight?”
