“Me?” Pem laughs, but it’s not like he’s making fun of her. It’s a cheerful laugh, something that would put most people in a good mood. Whether it has that effect on Jess is something to be seen. “No, no. I can’t use your name; I’m not one of the fae. I’m just a mutate.” He adds the last bit as if that should explain everything to her.
“The fae are,” he gestures widely at the garden around them, “everywhere. The pixies, the nymphs, that little gnome over there, just to name a few. Ituriel, my employer, has rules against using people’s names against them, but the fae are mischevious. You never can tell what they’re going to do. I should warn everyone we have visitors.”
Pem takes a cell phone from his bag and quickly sends out a message to all the keepers. “Just about everyone is welcome here, especially the outcasts, but intruders are not looked upon kindly. You look harmless enough, so I don’t mind vouching for you.”
He realizes what he said and quickly rephrases it. “I don’t mean that you couldn’t harm someone if you wanted to. I just mean that you probably aren’t here to cause any trouble. Right?” Pem doesn’t want to accidentally offend her.
Who are you? (( Jess and the muse of your choice 😊 ))
It’s a normal day in the Sparkling Garden. Groundskeepers do upkeep on the plants, pixies flutter around, and the Crinaeae - water nymphs - dance in the fountains. Despite the fact that it’s late January, the garden is full of green, thriving flora. There is a light blanket of snow over everything, only further raising the question as to how the plants are still alive.
Pem, the Keeper of the Garden, lays on the ground beside his favorite fountain. His arms are resting on the rim of the base. It’s a large, three-tiered marble fountain. The base of the fountain, the part where the water was held, has four stag statues. They face away from the center, each pointed in one of the cardinal directions. No Crinaeae dance in this fountain.
As Pem watches the water flow from the top to the middle to the bottom, he spots someone on the other side. “Oh?” He straightens up to see the stranger better. Then he calls out to her. “Who are you?”

“Out by the lake?!” Pem looks in that direction, alarmed. He’s worried enough that he doesn’t question Jess’s accent change. “I hope she knows how to handle others; the lake is Nes’s responsibility.” Pem lays down beside the fountain. “She can be alright sometimes though, it’s just that she’s not a big fan of land-dwellers. If she’s an adult, she’ll probably be fine.
“And there’s someone looking at the flowers?” Pem smiles proudly. “I spend a lot of time making sure they’re healthy. I hope he’s enjoying them. Just make sure he doesn’t pick any of the flowers without asking permission. The fae don’t like that kind of thing. Oh! And don’t give out your real name to the fae! Most of them are nice enough, but you don’t want to be at a disadvantage if you get on their bad side.”

The mermaid swims closer to the shore. “Sounds like you’ve got some problems,” Nes says curiously, and she feels she’s completely understating what Dama’s dealing with on her planet. A rather large frog hops past Dama and jumps toward the lake. Nes catches the frog in her arms and cradles it close to her chest. She pets the amphibian as she continues the conversation.
“If you ask me, most of that stuff will pass, but the technology part... I watched this planet’s societies grow more and more intertwined with technology over the past hundred years. I’ve heard that the magic in this world has faded drastically because of it. If your world is anything like mine, then the technology won’t go away.” Her garbled voice softens somewhat as Nes’ attention shifts to the frog. “Not that technology is all bad. Television has certainly been a wonderful development.”
The frog’s vocal sac inflates as it calls. Unseen frogs respond from the tall grass that grows alongside the lake. Nes releases the frog into the water. “Well, you’re certainly welcome to stay here as long as you’d like. Just be careful not to anger the fae folk that live on the land.”
"Who is there?" (( Nesameni and Dama ))
Nesameni got some free time. She’d been working for days preparing for the upcoming lake party. But now, she was on the other side of the lake, swimming slowly in circles. The water was nice and cool today. So relaxing.
She’s on lap twenty-something when Nes hears something. Sort of like someone else is nearby. The mermaid straightens, her fishtail rests on the sand at the bottom of the lake. She looks around. “Who is there?”

“Yeah, he’s plenty smart. But physic… I wouldn’t say that. This towel could’ve gone to just about anyone. A pixie, one of the gardeners, Kyra, or any of the others I see on a daily basis. Just so happened that that someone was you. And I’m glad it was. There’s nothing like making a first impression by being helpful, right?” Pem makes a sort of shrugging gesture.
“Anywho, you said you’re a kid? What’s a kid doing here by herself? You do have someone looking out for you, right, Jess?” He hadn’t realized she was a child until she said so herself. Pem was never good at guessing the ages of magical or mutant creatures. Or just any nonhuman really. After a few years living in the garden, Pem had given up even trying. Somethings were several decades or even centuries old without looking it. Likewise, some creatures appeared full grown but weren’t older than a week.
Case in point, he is looking at someone that he’d never have figured for a child but is. Nothing here is ever as straightforward as it may appear.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Jess." Pem rings out the wet hand towel and puts it back into his bag. He doesn't mind that Jess got a little water on him. "I'm called Pem." He answers. "I've been here about twenty years now. And in that time, I've found that everyone needs someone to care for them." He smiles. "Even if they won't admit it.
"Sorry, I'm sort of quoting my employer. He likes to say things like that. Gets really annoying. Especially after twenty years. Heh. Not that I'm complaining. It just gets old having someone who always seems to know everything. Who does always know everything."
Pem shakes his head. "For example, this morning he comes out to the garden to see me. That wasn't odd, of course. But he did give me something. 'You'll need this.' He says. 'Well, not you, but someone will.'" Pem rolls his large deer eyes. "And of course, he's right. You were the someone that needed the towel." Pem looks at Jess. "You ever know anyone like that?"

"I am called Nes." She answers honestly. It wasn't the name she was born with or even the full name she chose after her "rebirth" so to speak. But it is what most of those on the estate call her, except for Ituriel who always addresses her as Miss Nesameni.
She answers the rest of the questions in the order they were asked. "This lake is Charmed Lake, it's on the grounds of Ituriel Estate. This place is busy, but in a good way. This planet is Earth."
After giving the last response, Nes tilts her head. "You asked for the name of this planet... Does that mean you're from another planet? Not from another dimension? Or realm?"

Nes listens to Dama’s responses. She doesn’t sound like she’s lying; though Nes notes she didn’t give her name. Then again, just giving your name out to anyone who asks for it is not always the best idea. Especially with the fay that are hiding all over the estate.
When she inquires about asking Nes some questions, the maid hesitates. This could be a trick. It was common knowledge around the estate that Nes is the most cautious and most cynical of the employees.
Still... It’s only fair, right?
Sinking down so that the water reaches just below her shoulders, Nes nods. “You may ask whatever questions you’d like. Though I don’t guarantee I’ll answer them all.”

Before Pem can answer, Jess falls into the fountain. Concerned for the stranger, he quickly stands and rounds the fountain to reach her. But she’s already out of the water when he arrives.
“Because,” Pem takes a towel out of his bag and hands it over to her. It’s a hand towel, but it’s big enough to dry the smaller creature. “I’m the Keeper of this garden. It’s my business to know who is in it. And to care for them as well.”

"Hello." The dark-skinned mermaid regards Dama with a little curiosity. She's seen lots of creatures around the manor, a few even somewhat resemble this one.
"You're not from around here, are you? Who are you? What is your purpose of coming here? Who sent you?" Nes' curiosity turns to conviction. People don't just end up here at the lake by chance. There has to be some reason this one is here. It could be for help... or it could be for something more sinister.
The mermaid's tail taps the bottom of the lake, sending a signal out to the other creatures. If this stranger does mean to do harm, the entire lake's population will be ready to attack.

Aᴜʀᴇʟɪᴏ Vᴏʟᴛᴀɪʀᴇ ;; Lʏʀɪᴄs Sᴛᴀʀᴛᴇʀs
“But the night, she calls me…”
“Being a nocturnal soul, (besides just being simply strange), spawns from some illness of the mind.”
“He’ll eat you up, he’ll spit you out. You’d better stay away.”
“Your tears are all the pay I’ll ever need”
“The Devil tips his hat to me.”
“I’m the nightmare in your skull.”
“I’m a dagger in your back.”
“So come a little closer if you really want to know this very sad and woeful tale happened so long ago.”
“You married a fool, but I’m a fool for you.”
“You’re the only one around who can see the real me.”
“The toilet’s broke, and yet I bet, His/Her Majesty ain’t fixed it yet!”
“So until then I’m stuck with you.“
“You chopped my thumb off with an axe!”
“I’m just glad I was stuck with you.”
“I won’t tell you, that it’s all in your head — this world of ours is not as it seems.”
“The monsters are real, but not in your dreams.”
“Learn what you can from the beasts you defeat, you’ll need it for some of the people you meet.”
“Goodnight demon slayer, goodnight.”
“I’m nearly human, look at me, I’m almost a human being.”
“A long, long time ago, I fell to this place…”
“I’m trying to earn a set of feathery wings.”
“Your troubles are over, mine are just beginning.“
“Don’t leave me here, I need you here. I need to see you smile.”
“Get that damn thing off his/her neck!”
“What a shame, I’ve forgotten my name.”
“Bells are now tolling, soon heads will be rolling.”
“I wonder what you’ve done to me, I’ve lost all my ability to think logically.”
“I know I’ve never felt this way before, like someone pushed me through a door.”
“You and me are two leaves caught in the stream.”
“I pray tell, what kind of spell have you placed on my soul?”
“What’s affected you, it has got me too, and I’m losing all control!”

Acedia nods weakly after hearing her decision. She blinks and is gone.
The gorgon stands. She fiddles with the snake hair, pulling them so they go over her left shoulder. “That’s better.” She says. “Hi. I’m Liberalitas Avaritia, but I want you to call me Libby. Oh! And there was an offer of a hug earlier? I want that too. And I want my sunglasses. They fell off earlier. I want them back. Pem?”
“I’ll go get them,” Pem crosses his arms. “If you promise that you’ll behave while I’m gone.”
“Yeah, yeah, sure.” Libby kneels to look at a flower bet. “I want flowers in my room. Pretty flowers. Not some of the uglier flowers. I want them to be pretty.” She fingers the plants as she talks, feeling the stems, leaves, and petals. “What about my hug?”

“Let’s head to one of the kitchens, see what they have there. It’s, um,” Ash thinks for a second, “this way.” She points and then starts walking in that direction.
“I’d stay out of the way. I’m usually asleep in the morning, but when I’m up, I find it’s best to let them do their thing. You’ll see ‘em soon enough. Pendra is the first one to get up, ‘cuz she’s the cook. She makes the staff’s food, the guests’,  and the guy who owns this place’s too. Hey! I’ll bet you’ll like Pendra; she’s kinda similar to how you look.”
Ash takes her phone out of her pocket. That’s right, her skirt has pockets. Using her thumb, she sends a message to her bandmates, so they’ll know why she isn’t there when they wake up.
“Heck yeah, you can stay!” Ash accepts her request. In truth, Ash is only a guest and has no real authority on whether she can stay or not. But she knows Ituriel would never turn away someone in need. “It’ll be a few hours before any of the workers here get up. And then they’ve all got some routine they have to do each morning. So it’ll probably be some time before anyone’ll be available to help out.”
The vampire bat creature looks around as if figuring out where they are. She nods in a direction. “This way.” She starts down the hall, but stops suddenly when a thought comes to mind. “Oh, wait! I completely forgot. Geez, what kinda a host am I? You hungry? Or thirsty? We’ve got all kinds of things to eat an’ drink.”
