Title: Love is Just A Socially Acceptable Form of Masochism Word Count: 601 Oikage Week: Day 4 - Transfer Student/Penpals/Internet Friends Summary: In theory, a series of interconnected drabbles following the themes of Oikage week.

Maki clicks his tongue the second Oikawa's hand dips into his jacket pocket. His disdain is as clear as the breath that leaves his lips when he tells Oikawa, "His profile isn't suddenly going to be public."

Oikawa shoots him a glare. Snows drops off the fur lining of his hood. It's so cold he's almost surprised icicles haven't formed along the edges yet.

"I'm checking the time," he says defensively. He adds, pouting, "I have no idea what you're talking about." 

He doesn't miss the roll of Maki's eyes. 

"Why don't you just send him a friend request?" 

Oikawa's shoes are filled with slush and it makes him cringe whenever he shuffles to find a new comfortable position to stand in. The snow only piles up higher. "Where's Iwa-chan?"

Maki checks his own phone then unhelpfully supplies, "Late." 

Oikawa opens his phone again, clicking through the lock screen. A unflattering picture of Kageyama stares at him. It was taken in a gymnasium, looks like, from the rounded, metal lighting cut off over his head. Taken by an amateur, nothing editorial or doctored about it. The blur of the screen suggests the photographer was moving fast--perhaps getting away. 

An odd choice for a profile picture. 

But even unflattering for Kageyama is striking. 

Oikawa's thumb hovers over the Request button and then drops away. 

"He's the worst," Oikawa sniffles. It's from the cold. It's definitely from the cold. "Iwa-chan," he clarifies, clicking off his phone and pocketing it again. "He hasn't texted me, either. Some nerve, when I deign to be here early." 

"I was early," Maki corrects him. "You were five minutes late." 

Oikawa side-eyes him. "I was fashionably early." 

Maki snorts. 

They wait a little while longer in silence. Snowflakes fall heavily around them, coming down like already formed snowballs. 

Oikawa wonders if she's ugly. He worries that she's pretty, and athletic. That she says what she means and knows what she wants, if she makes Kageyama smile in that way that lights up his eyes more than it shows on his lips and isn't petty enough to rile him up. 

She probably took the picture and it probably has some schmoopy caption because Oikawa’s always imagined Kageyama to be like that. 

Oikawa kicks at the snow and picks up his cell. 

"Can I see your phone?" Maki asks, holding out his hand. Oikawa stares. "Mine's dying and I want to call Iwaizumi." 

"I can call Iwa-chan." 

"Yeah, but he's more likely to pick up if he hears my voice on the voicemail." 

He's not wrong. Oikawa keys in the code and closes his last window. He types in Iwaizumi's number by heart and hands over the cell phone. 

Before Maki clicks the call button, Iwaizumi and Matsukawa turn the corner. 

"My, my, my~" Oikawa lilts. "Look what the cat dragged by." 

Matsukawa shrugs his shoulders, folding his hands into his jacket pocket. "Bus got stuck on the road behind a pile up."

"We had to walk here, Shittykawa." 

"As long as you’re safe," Maki says, handing Oikawa back his phone. "The tailor hasn't gotten here either yet." 

Iwaizumi frowns, but it's not too long after that the tailor does finally make it, apologetic and welcoming them in to his shop.

Oikawa sheds his coat on the nearest available rack. He grabs his phone from the pocket, slips it into his slacks, before pulling it out once more. He clicks past the lock screen and the feeling that surges through him is akin to getting a mountain of snow shoved down his shirt. 

Request Sent, now reads the button next to Kageyama's adorably dumb mug. 

"Maki! You traitor!"

Tobio groans when he hears his phone chirp with messages. He rolls to the other side of his bed and grabs his pillow to throw over his face; hoping to smother the insistent buzzing sound.

It doesn’t.

Annoyed at being woken up Tobio grabs the pillow and throws it at the wall across from him, and then he reaches for his phone. He stares at it with tired, unfocused eyes.

Finally, his eyes seem to register the phone in front of him and he sees it’s Oikawa-san messaging him.

Now, that wakes him up.

Tobio unlocks his phone and brings up the messages from Oikawa-san. He still rolls his eyes when he sees the name for Oikawa: The Best Senpai™, he didn’t choose that, obviously, Oikawa-san did. (Tobio still cannot get over how Oikawa-san had grabbed his phone out of his hand and inputted his number after a practice match. Mind-boggling, really.) His eyes widen when he reads the messages.

Tobio’s face flushes when he types out his next response:

His finger hovers over the send button, uncertainty. It isn’t until he rereads the messages does he gets the courage to hit send.

Tobio waits.

And waits.

And waits.

No response back.

The flush on his face becomes darker in color, he can’t believe he actually thought Oikawa-san’s friends weren’t lying.

Goddammit, he’s made himself look like a fool now.

He starts typing, he’ll say he was joking and then act like none of this ever happened. Tobio’s about to hit send when a call interrupts his texting.

CALL FROM: Oikawa-san

Tobio debates with himself if he should hit the END call, but doesn’t. In the end, he begrudgingly hits the CALL button.

“Oikawa-”

“I LIKE YOU, TOO, TOBIO-CHAN!” Is what cuts him off. The angry flush lightens to a petal pink. “W-What?”

“I-ugh...Like you, too. So, yeah” Oikawa-san says, voice shaky and hopeful(?).

“OH,” Tobio responds, he feels like he needs a drink because his mouth has become too dry. “I like you, as well, Oikawa-san.” He pauses and waits, listening to Oikawa’s heavy breathing.

“You do,” Oikawa-san exclaims. “I mean, of course you do, Tobio-chan! I am quite the catch, ya’know.”

Tobio pinches the bridge of his nose contemplating why he likes this jerk.

“Buuuut, anyway, since you like me I’ll take responsibility and take you on a date. Tomorrow at 7, wear casual clothes, ok!”

His eyes widen in shock, “Oikaw-”

“Can’t wait, bye bye!”

Tobio feels his eye twitch, the audacity of Oikawa-san. He tosses his phone back onto the desk by his bed before curling himself around his blankets. He needs all the rest he can get after this circus show...and he needs to make sure he doesn’t have any bags for his date.

He’s sound asleep when his phone goes off one last time.

||SAKUATSU AND THE JAPANESE MEDIA||

have you all noticed how we have an abundance of sakuatsu fics, fanart and stans in the western media but very few and rare doujins served by the japanese side of the fandom?

even the sporadic content we see has a very different take on sakuatsu than we do..

now, take myself as a referance. i entered the fandom with a vengeance against all but suga, avoided sakuatsu and kagehina like it was the COVID epicenter itself but a year and a half later ended up reading one teeny fanfic on ao3 out of dire curiousity and ended up with sakuatsu as my adopted babies.

there was a lot of discussion on this ship on twt, tumblr and the like, but when i searched up for doujins to satisfy my horny hunger, i found none?

the very few and far between were actually AtsuSaku (top atsumu, still not much common with the english speaking world) and SakuOsa (poor atsumu 🤣) and featured sakusa as a very grumpy, tsundere, devil-may-care lover whom atsumu had to ask permission just to kiss. compare THAT to how the western fandom potrays him as the blunt jerk who is nefariously down bad for atsumu, but is still kinda loveable and chaotic in his own steed.

the thing is, sakuatsu is a rare ship. there are hardly 5 panels on interaction for them in the manga, and still quite less info on sakusa available, which gives the people the opportunity to mould him into any shape they want. atsumu has more chemistry with hinata, aran, kita, suna, hell you'd even find more miyacest content in japan than sakuatsu. it all started out as a crack ship, something similar to matsuhana, and exploded exponentially in a span of few weeks like it was set on fire. honestly, covid-19 would be jealous.

in the year 2020, the world recieved so many beautiful fanfics, maybe some of the best in the fandom. the same teenagers once raving after kagehina and iwaoi were now adults and have had enough of bubbly, tooth rotting fluff and circumstancal angst.

iwaoi's biggest potential for angst is them seperating for college, same as bokuaka and kuroken. maybe an external factor causing a rift in the couple. very basic.

they wanted something dynamic, something real, something which allows your creativity to leap out the box and sprint several kilometres ahead.

the salient answer was sakuatsu.

only in sakuatsu, the angst potential come from the characters themselves. sakusa and atsumu are insufferable, totally unlikeable people (though i have met a lot of people like atsumu and they get on with their day just fine). they have no chill, no qualms, no redeeming feature other than volleyball and their looks and maybe this could work out?

two jerks, aint afraid to talk shit, bringing out the best (or worst?) in each other. maybe they could find love afterall? huh.

what's this? a chance for ao3 authors to expand their creative writing skills to new horizons and take artistic liberties indulgently but still have a locus to ground themselves to so that they don't go all hocus-focus?

you bet they'd take this chance.

famous fics like 'a liar's truth', 'hand study', 'burden of blame' were released and it was the explosive and beautifully belligerent start of a ship no one saw coming. riding on the highs and lows of a relationship, depicting exactly how toxic yet fulfilling realistic dating can be, its upto you how you'd end up. these fics depicted the shimmering tension, the passionate abhor and the disastrous clashes.

there was no way a huge chunk of japanese fans, enough to catalyse its popularity, would be able to reach these fics and fanarts, which were usually just characteristics fleshed out in the author's mind. ooc, if you will.

sakuatsu is literally whatever you want it to be. a murder mystery or a romcom, you decide. it is ever changing, ephemeral, dangerous. you need to keep up with every step to find its beauty.

its a pity that the japanese fandom wasn't able to catch onto this sakuatsu fever and create some god-tier content like they usually do with other notorious ships like kageoi or kitaatsu.

also, osaatsu/atsuosa, kitaatsu and atsuhina are already selling there a lot (which makes a lot of sense in hindsight than this sakuatsu, no offence) and view atsumu as a TOP.

also, also the japanese part of the fandom have no qualms with shipping komosaku and ushisaku and do it graciously, so well both characters are satisifed fully with the japanese seperately as far as they are concerned.

well, if the movies come out, there is a good chance that the sakuatsu car ride would be just around the corner again and maybe this time, the japanese fandom can hop on a ride? and show atsumu riding on sakusa too pls i need to see thier bful art ahaha
