"Happy New Year." Comes up from behind with two flutes of champagne. She took a little creative liberty with the dress this year, as ball gowns weren't necessarily Layla's cup of tea. But they let her in regardless. Handing over the drink to Kaede, she leans in to give him a kiss on the cheek, happy to be out of the bar queue with enough time before the stroke of midnight.

"Never thought I would ever say it." A lifetime of unhealthy short-term dalliances without any real commitment or interest (Plus her own mother's detachment behaviours) left Layla naturally with the assumption this type of relationship she shared with Kaede wasn't on the card. Especially with how transient her life had become in the earlier years of adulthood. Here one moment, gone the next, was never a good way to nurture relationships. "Likewise."

Layla rolls her eyes, mirroring the grin on Kaede's features. "Yeah yeah, mock all you want. But the next time I see you all worried about the little things, or problems you create in your own head, that's what I'm going to keep telling you."

"Filthy mind, K. I was talking about cleaning — perfectly innocent." Turning around, Layla flicks a quick wide, sly, grin over her shoulder towards Kaede as she looks for the shoulder bag she'd stuffed under the bar. "If we've gotten to the point where I'm thinkin' you're going to jump my bones that easily, I've become more of a corrupting influence on you than I thought."

The process was something that Kaede didn’t have the easiest time with because he’d been so out of practice. The last time he’d fallen in love it was back in college. He was a lot more headstrong and confident then. Just a far cry from how the later adult years had started to wear on him. But then Layla had been someone in his life that brought him back. Brought the parts of him that he swore were gone back out and part of his personality again.

“ never thought I could say something like that again. “ Kaede admitted at the notion of them being in a happy adult relationship. How was this his real life he wondered for a moment because it had all snuck up on him till he couldn’t deny he’d fallen for Layla. He honestly loved that because it felt so natural. “ but I’m very happy to “

“ wait what?” Kaede replies with shock to his voice. Of course it had already been a while since the pair had become official but he never told anyone anything. So he wonder just how obvious he came off. “ I had no idea. I’ve just been sort of not saying anything this whole time cause I wasn’t trying to be weird.“ he admitted with humor to his voices he shook his head at the notion before glancing back to her. “ that’s good at least. I think I would have been worried otherwise “

Kaede smiled softly at Laylas comment. He loved her on any form but the optimistic approach to her wasn’t that common and it didn’t go unnoticed. It reminded him of the parts of her that had been supportive after his wife had died. Those little glimmers of someone who helped him realized it would get better. “All my bad habits aren’t that bad. Just gotta replace them with something else I’d wager “

His smile cracked again into more of a grin at her joke and he shook his head at the notion. “ I would never be that rude to take you into a supply closet for that. My office is in the back first of all “ he teased, clearly joking “ but also I’m too old to be sneaking around like that. “ he added before taking a step back. “ is this your way of telling me to keep my hands to myself and to stay in the other side of the bar?” @ponderosus

"I want to make a drink menu for Valentine's day." Layla's wiped down spilt water on the counter, lifting onto her toes to reach the last droplets on the other side, so she didn't have to walk around and waste any more time. "But I have a feeling the place with be filled with people trying to get away from that stuff."

"We were running in circles around each other for a while there." It took a while for Layla to understand the scope of when feelings developed on his end. She considered Kaede to be more... insular about feelings than she was. Sometimes she couldn't quite read him. But Layla had known that even if the couldn't see it at the time, the feelings were there — he was just equally as terrified. "We were already pretty close friends." Layla reasons with a shrug, "I don't think too much changed between us until we talked finally talked about it."

"Plus I didn't want to make assumptions." At the end of the day, assumption is the mother of all mistakes. Luckily that wasn't what ended up happening,. "You were already going through a lot, and I didn't want you to feel overwhelmed." she fidgets with the rings staked on her pinky finger. "Or make you feel like had to do things you weren't ready to do yet."

"God, yeah. I don't want to think about how long it would of taken without her intervening." Probably another very drunk Layla turning up at his door desperate for some attention to fill the pit of loneliness in her life at the time. "That's good. I'm always going to be grateful how much benefit of the doubt she gave me coming in after losing her mum."

"Oh yeah?" She wouldn't lie, it was very gratifying to hear him speak of her in that way. "I must be doing something right here, then."

“ did I?” Kaede asked as the news reached him that he seem to have had a pretty indecipherable face. He considered himself someone who is always thinking, but maybe that came off a little bit harder than he anticipated, because in his head, he felt like he was obvious when it came to his feelings, so the woman in front of him. “ I’m sorry if I ever made it seem confusing, cause I was pretty smitten the moment I realized I had feelings for you.”

It probably hadn’t helped that he was still appearing like he was in mourning. Because the truth was he had been, he always was going to have this aura around him as someone who had lost someone important. But he never wanted to close his heart to other people, especially since that was something Gabrielle didn’t want him to do. And hearing Layla’s words made Kaede realize that perhaps they were having the same thoughts back then. “ I understand that. If it had been any other kid, I think I would’ve had the same concern, but with her she seemed to know what was happening and I mean, let’s be honest. She’s the one who got us to admit our feelings. You’ve always felt like family even before we were more than friends, she always been a fan” he added, knowing if his daughter wasn’t so distracted by plants, she’d probably say that she loved Layla. “ I appreciate the care you put in when it came to her and to me. I don’t even know how to thank you with how much help you’ve been with her. Because I think she just needs someone that’s not a dad or a guy to talk to. “

Kaede smile softly at her gesture and quickly returns the kiss, feeling a little more bold after she initiated the motion. “ why would I ever want to get rid of the best person that’s happened in my life In a long time” @ponderosus

Finally! I've finished drawing that emotion practice! I drew EVERY single character (minus the Monokubs, Monokuma, etc. and the UDG cast)... It's done... I actually feel kinda pleased with this.
