Yippee!!! It'll be a bit of a varied list, and I have 0 musical brain, so I cannot tell you what genre or style something is. Hell, I can't even tell you if it's good. I'm also working of the assumption you have spotify (apologies if you dont) some will be Flemish and others Netherlands, so the accent difference can make it harder to understand. If you want the lyrics to some of em and can't find them online, I will genuinly and gladly transcribe and or translate them for you

De toverfluit - frank groothof A funny musical/opera that is a child friendly/fairytalefied version of Mozarts' 'the magic flute' (the lady who sings very high in all the adverts)

Herman Van Veen I already mentioned in the tags, he is great. My favourites are 'zingende doden' (a good song to take a moment and think. The rest of that album is also fun) Für Elise and Alfred Jodocus Kwak (there are multiple alfred jodocus kwak albums, but this one specifically was my childhood)

Het grote boeboeksbal they have some fun songs to make you happy. Boeboeks are creatures from the author 'marc de bel', eho are green with large ears and live in the forrest. Their biggest enemy is the cat (I forgor his name) there's also punk rats. but beware that not all the words are real! (Muggen/musquitos get called 'muzzies' and knuffelen/hugging becomes 'knuspelen')

Les miserables this is the Flemish version of les mis, I like it, but some words will be different, and ofcourse the accent (assuming you are learning Netherlands Dutch)

Clouseau very 'oh that’s a classic!' Flemish music. Their most known songs are 'Anne' 'vonken en vuur' 'zij is van mij' and 'daar gaat ze'

Gers Pardoel is a Netherlands rapper(?) Some of his hits are 'boem boem' 'ik neem je mee' and 'zo bijzonder'

Laïs again Flemish, they are one of our typical folkdance groups ('t smidje is the song to which all Belgians learn to dance) personal favourites are: 't smidje, bruidsnacht, de wereld vergaat and 't jeugdig groen. They do use more complex dutch/ harder words. (Also, Idk if you know this or not, but words like 's nachts and 't smidje in dutch are like that bc there was a word there once. 'T is a short form for 'het' and 's comes from 'des'. We no longer use 'des', but it stuck around in 's ochtends and 's avonds - but that’s a tangent)

Kvraagetaan - fixkes very Flemish, 'I ask it on' or 'I ask you if you want to be a thing with me' a childhood reminiscens song of simpler days

Dutch and Flemish Childrenʼs Media - Part 3: Studio 100

Part 1: Books - Part 2: TV - Part 4: The Rest

When youʼre studying a language you often want to learn something about a corresponding culture as well, however, I have always had trouble finding resources on things meant for kids. Childrenʼs books are rarely mentioned in literature lists and nobody really wants to talk about the songs they listened to as a child.

This series will be dedicated to childrenʼs media in the Dutch language. Because of my own age most things I say will mainly be relevant for children born in the late nineties or early zeroes. (But thatʼs probably the biggest part of Tumblrʼs demographic anyway.) If you think I missed something, feel free to add it yourself or send me a message and I’ll edit this post.

Studio 100 is a Belgian company producing Childrenʼs media (mainly in Dutch) and I think itʼs fair to say that every  Flemish and Dutch child has grown up with multiple Studio 100 productions. I will mention the productions that I think are well known and exceptionally well known productions get a * behind the name. I will try to make this extensive up to 2010 (but newer productions might be included anyway), which will be the productions that the biggest part of Tumblrʼs demographic would be familiar with.

Amika

Iʼm not sure how well known this is, but someone mentioned it and I have watched  it. Anyway. This is basically a series about horses. Our main character Merel loves horses and manages to get a job at a equestrian facility, her father is against it because her mother died after a fall from a horse. The manège is owned by an absolutely horrible rich™ family. The title character Amika is a fully misunderstood horse that is threatened to be put down.

Het Huis Anubis*

Let me tell you that this was a big hit (but I  somehow never watched it). This series is a mystery programme. The plot is about a group of students living together in a house where they discover a big mystery on the attic. Meanwhile, usual teenage drama goes on too.

K3*

K3 is a singing group consisting of 3 women. (Originally Karen, Kristel and Kathleen, hence the name.) While they are a singing group, theyʼve also made a couple of movies and television programmes. Currently none of the original members is still part of the group. Stuff from them I think you should check out:

Songs: Oya Lélé, Mama Sé, 10.000 Luchtballonnen (one from each composition of the group) and Alle Kleuren, Toveren, Verliefd, Heyah Mama, Loko Le and Pina Colada;

Movies and Series: K3 en het Magische Medaillon (superhero movie) and Hallo K3 (sitcom).

Kabouter Plop

A series about a couple of gnomes/leprechauns(there’s no one-on one translation, but you get the gist). I think you could technically call it a sitcom? Most of the characters only have one personality trait and the plots usually revolve around them learning to work together even though their personalities clash. Even though this is a series multiple songs have been recorded by the cast, the best known being De Kabouterdans.

Mega Mindy

We had female superheroes before it was cool. The main character is Mieke, a young woman working as a local police officer. She has a non returned crush on her colleague Toby and her boss is a complete idiot. She lives with her grandparents for unexplained reasons, and her grandfather is an inventor. Every episode some criminal tries to steal/commit fraud/destroy the world/etc. Because the police is very incompetent Mieke usually has to use one of her grandfathers inventions to discover the villain and then has to transform into her super alter ego Mega Mindy (Ironically Toby does have a crush on Mega Mindy.) and save the day. Apart from the series some movies has been released (in which apparently Toby also gets a super alter ego) and a couple of songs. Apart from the theme song Mega Mindy Tijd is also a well known song.

Piet Piraat

A series about a group of pirates, they are constantly looking for treasure, but thatʼs about all the pirate things they do. The entire series takes place on the ship, so thereʼs not a lot of action though.

Samson en Gert*

A series about a talking dog, and his owner Gert (who is also the owner of Studio 100 btw) and their friends. Many of the plots revolve around someone who made a mistake and tried to cover it up with bigger disasters as a result.

Spring

A soap taking place around a dancing school. It’s a coming-of-age story with love and friendship.

Musicals

Studio 100 is also a musical producer and I’m pretty sure all musicals have been professionally recorded too! Which means that basically Studio 100 musicals were my first intro to stage musicals. In the early 2000 most musicals were fairytale retellings, but nowadays the musicals have more original stories. I own the dvd’s of Doornroosje (sleeping beauty (with K3) and probably my favourite), De 3 Biggetjes (Three little Piglets (with K3)) and De Kleine Zeemeermin (The Little Mermaid) and if you ever come across a recording of them I really recommend you watch them. (I also have a foggy memory of seeing Sneeuwwitje (Snow White) on TV once or twice and from what I remember it was pretty good too. Also on the K3 YouTube channel you can find the Alice in Wonderland musical apparently). For most of these musicals you can at least find the soundtrack on Spotify.

Week 18: Mijn vroegste muzikale herinnering: De 3 biggetjes - K3

Mijn vroegste muzikale herinnering is de musical De Drie Biggetjes van K3. Ik was nog heel klein maar ik herinner me nog dat ik samen met andere kindjes stond te dansen op de leukste liedjes van Karen, Kristel en Kathleen. Als ik dit liedje hoor, denk ik spontaan terug aan die tijd en dat maakt me blij. Het is een heel vrolijk en speels liedje met een mooie boodschap er in. Dit liedje zal me voor altijd bijblijven.

Boy oh boy

Hoe schattig zijn tweejarigen eigenlijk? Echt waar, wat een verschil met een halfjaartje geleden! Mijn lief, klein meisje is werkelijk een lief klein meisje. Zes maanden geleden was er niets mee aan te vangen, dan zitten ze op de leeftijd van ‘ik begrijp wel alles wat je zegt, maar doe toch lekker wat ik wil’. In de hoek, een preek, verplichten om sorry, dankjewel en alsjeblieft te zeggen, het leek soms of het allemaal tevergeefs was, maar de aanhouder wint! Ze beseft ondertussen heel goed wanneer ze braaf is en wanneer niet, ze verontschuldigt zich spontaan en ook dankjewel en alsjeblieft is er bijna ingebakken. Wat een flinke meid, of flinke jongen, zoals ze zichzelf altijd benoemt. Haar broer blijft haar grootste voorbeeld, natuurlijk. Ze kan ook alles al alleen, en als je dat even vergeet, herinnert ze je daar wel zo’n 100 keer per dag aan met haar nieuw, favoriete zinnetje: ‘ik kan da al’.

Mijn andere schattie had gisterenavond zijn eerste slaapfeestje! Zijn beste vriend kwam logeren. Hij keek er al de hele week naar uit, wij vonden het heel schattig, maar hielden ons hart ook al vast. We rekenden alvast niet op te veel slaap die nacht. De mama van het vriendje is een vriendin van mij (oke, we hebben de vriendschap van de jongens een klein beetje geforceerd, but it worked!). Twee jongens die al een week verlangen naar zo’n dag zijn wild, heel wild! Ons huis daverde, alle schietgeweren, lightsabers en superheldenkostuums werden uitgehaald, binnen de 10 minuten waren er al een aantal accidentjes gebeurd, SLIK. Toen het (eindelijk) bedtijd was, las manlief een verhaaltje voor en ze gingen mooi liggen. Na 5 minuten toch gestommel in de gang. Het vriendje moest nog kaka doen, eens op het toilet, wilde de kaka toch niet komen. Opnieuw naar bed. Nog eens 10 minuten later hoorden we de deur kraken, was er toch wel geen spook in de kamer! Zoonlief moest toen ook opeens kaka doen. Gek genoeg bleek de kaka te slapen toen hij op de wc ging zitten. Ondertussen moest het vriendje pipi doen, maar ook de pipi was slaperig geworden op weg naar het kleinste kamertje. En toen niets meer, ze sliepen. Eigenlijk nog vlotter dan we hadden verwacht. We maakten er zelf nog een fijne avond van en bereidden ons voor op een vroege ochtend. Zoals voorspeld stonden er om 6u20 twee kapoentjes in de gang. Ik heb nog een poging gedaan om ze weer naar bed te sturen, maar daar begonnen ze luid een feestje te bouwen. Om te vermijden dat dochterlief ook wakker zou worden, is manlief tegen half 7 toch maar naar beneden getrokken met de boys. Tegen de middag kwam er een einde aan de playdate! Allebei waren ze doodmoe maar voldaan (en wij ook)!

Manlief had ook nog een topplan, we zouden de brief voor Sinterklaas maken. Persoonlijk vind ik dat veel te vroeg voor de kindjes, serieus, leg maar eens aan een peuter en een kleuter uit dat je nog 35 keer moet slapen voordat de Sint komt! Maar oké, zoals het een goede vrouw betaamt, luister ik naar manlief en maakten we een brief. Voor mezelf ook wel handig, want wil er wel op tijd bij zijn dit jaar, blijkbaar leveren niet alle webshops de dag nadien….

De speelgoedfolders lagen al in de brievenbus en de Sint heeft de winkelrekken ook al met chocolade gevuld, dus waarom niet?

Manlief was wel erg slim: ‘Kijk jij met dochterlief, ik zal met zoonlief de folders doorbladeren’. Het is onmogelijk om deze opdracht tot een goed einde te brengen met een ongeduldige tweejarige! Ze wilde niet blijven zitten, was enkel geïnteresseerd in de pop die ze al heeft en in de schaar die ik in mijn hand had. Uiteindelijk is ze verder gaan kijken naar K3 en de wolven of de 3 Biggetjes en zat ik in mijn eentje prentjes uit te knippen, terwijl manlief mij gewoon aan het uitlachen was en zei dat ik toch had moeten weten dat dat niet zou lukken met een peuter. Really?!
