Knowledge vs Logic

[Disclaimer: this post and some future ones that are planned are rewrites of posts i made ages ago on another account, i have updated the information in them and made them more useful for the educational purposes of this blog]

Let's think for a second about how Deduction works as a subject, if it were a science you could study in college, what would the very first lesson teach you to start framing your understanding of how this big ball of interconnected skills and methods functions and is organised?

Well the first thing we have to think of is how is Deduction broken down? are there any categories or subsections to it? any subtopics that one can choose to specialise in? How much does it branch out? Answering these questions would make studying deduction as a topic easier, and that's what i'll try to do in this post

The reality is that the answer to these questions will change depending on what deductionist you ask, i know some that identify the existence of subsets and categories in Deduction but haven't yet figured out what these are, i know others that separate the whole topic into 3 "pillars" as they put it. As scientists we're all trying to figure these questions out and we all have theories that overlap with each other, what this post is meant to do is outline the theory i've developed over 8 years of learning and teaching Deduction.

I believe the most effective way to start categorising different branches and parts of deduction is to start as general and broad as we can, and in doing that i've come to the conclusion that Deduction can be broken down into two categories: Logic Deductions and Knowledge Deductions, and both are important to make the most out of any deductive process

/L O G I C D E D U C T I O N S

This type of deduction is based on everything you can gather about a subject using only general knowledge about the world around you and your observation skills. The process can be longer and more complex than Knowledge deductions, but it can be applied to any situation. For example:

Let's imagine that we pop our head out the window one morning and we see the roof of other houses and the street is wet, we don't need to go back inside and research instances of water falling out of the sky, we know what that process is, we understand that sometimes it rains and when that happens everything that is exposed gets wet, we therefore look out the window and immediately go "ah! it rained!". If someone were to ask us "how do you know?" we could explain that rain falls down onto everything that's not covered and makes it wet, if everything that's not covered is wet, it probably rained, since it's the most likely explanation for that chain of events, and chances are we won't have taught anything new to this person, and yet we knew it had rained because we used a logical train of thought to figure it out.

This is what a logic deduction relies on, general knowledge and information almost everyone knows or understands, things that are common knowledge. We don't always deduce to get a reaction out of people, but when we do get one, the reaction that Logic Deductions get comes from the fact that anyone could've thought of that deduction, but no one did because no one has trained their observation and reasoning skills to read the world around them

While the rain example is a very simple deduction, it is a deduction nonetheless, and if we now translate it to, for example, seeing someone's phone and knowing they're right handed because the oil marks from scrolling with their thumb go up the right hand side of the screen, we have achieved the same effect, we've used common knowledge that almost everyone has, to get information that almost everyone could get, what makes these deductions impressive is just that, we don't have any extra knowledge than the average person, we just know how to read our surroundings and use logic to gain information

/K N O W L E D G E D E D U C T I O N S

This type of deduction is based on the usage of any fact stored in a "data base", for example a mind palace, or that you happen to know based on inside knowledge on a specific subject. Knowledge about prices of specific clothing brands, about 243 types of tobacco ash, and about different micro expressions, all constitute as knowledge that can be used to make deductions, and not everyone who can deduce necessarily has knowledge on these specific subjects, but these deductions only come into play in the specific situations in which your data bank becomes useful, not in every situation.

For example, if we were to see a logo on someone's shirt and take a picture of it and run it through a program that searched every internet page for a matching logo, and we used that result to figure out where this person works, that "deduction" relies entirely on your access to a database to identify a logo (in this case whatever this program may be)

This is what sets apart knowledge deductions, they don't require much of a train of thought, instead they rely on being able to associate what information you gather through observation to information you've learned and have stored in your data base (usually a mind palace). We don't always deduce to get a reaction out of people, but when we do get one, the reaction that Knowledge Deductions get comes from the fact that you have knowledge that is obscure or rare and that most people don't know

If we now translate this to a more complex and realistic scenario, for example, knowing someone has been to Japan recently because they opened their wallet and you were able to see and recognise a Japanese yen note in it, we can see that this deduction hinges on your ability to recognise foreign currency on sight, be it because you lived in Japan for a while, or because you've filled a room in your mind palace with the recognising factors of different currency around the world, you have used a data base to make a deduction about someone that most people aren't able to make

Ideally these two categories should work in tandem with each other, and one should train both equally, but we're only human and both of these require effort to develop, so at the very least my advice is to develop them so that they balance each other out. They should be seen as two spectrums, if your score in one of them is gonna be very low, at least make the other one very high to compensate

Understanding the way that Deduction can be broken down into these categories allows us to both recognise when we make use of them and which category we're training at any given moment. This is important since it is a major factor to keep in mind when analysing and breaking down your own deductions or those of other deductionists, which is a process that we will talk about in the future and that all deductionists should go through often since it's one of the most effective ways to learn from other people's deductions and to improve your own

Answering Asks Until the Labeled Sequel is Rewritten

What is this?

I am officially moving into the rewrite stage of the Labeled Sequel tonight. I’m not proofreading which I would use the proofreading story for. This is much more involved and I don’t want to stop every 20 minutes and write stuff in a different universe. That would mess me up. Instead, I plan to answer an ask from this ask game every time I write 500 words. There isn’t really a time restraint. The goal is to answer 1-5 asks a day which would take half a month to edit, but I am still ill and working on a dissertation, so I’m going to estimate a month.

What are the rules?

Simple! Select one thing from each category and send them as an ask. I will answer them in the order they come in, except when multiple from one person comes through. I will bump those to the bottom of the list so everyone who asks gets at least one answered in a (relatively) timely manner. That being said, I strong encourage you to send more than one! (pls) If I end up with too many... well... I also have to proofread after this. If I don’t end up with enough, I’ll just random number generate at every 500 words.

Not really!

I think this is supposed to be about characters? I tend to lean towards characters that are pining for a certain person but are scared of being with them because they don't want to get hurt

D: Is there a song or a playlist to associate with [insert fic]?

Journey to the Past is very much inspired by the version of Anastasia. There are also Happiest Year and A Slow Dance With Death, which are songfics!

E: If you wrote a sequel to [insert fic], what would it be about?

If I wrote a sequel to Would You Catch Me? it would be more of Dazai making everyone worry about him until eventually they sit down and work together to get him some therapy

F: Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

This really isn't anything special but I don't know, there is something about that last line that brings it all together

G: Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?

I used to only do start to finish but writing out of order is pretty fun! usually it depends on what I'm writing and how long it is

Messy. I like to ignore grammar rules for the sake of aesthetic

I'm in the stages of rewriting Write to You but an alternate ending would be one where Chuuya manages to convinces Dazai not to rejoin the mafia

HMM, I think maybe killing Chuuya in Inked

L: How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting?

I edit myself to death. I revise and rewrite until I can't stand to look at it anymore

M: Got any premises on the back burner that you’d care to share?

Oh, too many. The biggest one is definitely the Bideou/Ningguang rival business owner AU that I still haven't STARTED. I can't decide what I want the big conflict to be, so there hasn't been much progress. I'm hoping I'll have more time to work on it once it's summer and I've finally moved!

N: Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?

Nope! as much as I want to read some of my unfinished fics, I also want to be the one to write them

O: How do you begin a story–with the plot, or the characters?

Plot

I think I'm more of a gardener. I like to start off with a rough outline and then let the story go from there

Love them! The first fics I ever wrote were written with a friend and it was so much fun. I would love to collaborate with someone again

hi hello thank you that is very kind,,,,,,,, i'm running on Stress Stress Anxiety Brain rn so i don't know how coherent this will be but talking about blorbos helps me feel better so i will Attempt A Ramble.

the tl;dr for tftgs is that it's a horror-comedy series that i have been fixated on for a hot minute and that i am almost constantly rotating in the background of my mind. it is INCREDIBLY problematic™ in several ways and i do have a lot of issues with it

(namely its handling of disabled/neurodivergent characters and ableism is Not Great at the best of times, there are minor characters who use a lot of nasty derogatory language that makes me super uncomfy even though i Know they're at least not Celebrated for that and are condemned by the narrative, and also a lot of the characters are just fucking MEAN to each other)

but something about it scratches an itch in my brain that i didn't know was there. i love the characters (or at least my six faves, but there's a lot of others i adore even if they're not My Blorbos) so dearly and i am going to scoop them up and run away with them at high speeds to give them the happy endings they deserve.

this is also where i reveal i haven't actually finished reading the series in its entirety yet because i am a slow reader. i did rewrite chapter one of the first book tho as like a writing exercise, and i posted some of that here if anyone wants to check that out (shameless self promo). okay rosa rosa rosa my beloved darling rosa. i am going to talk about some of my headcanons for rosa and also share some of my favorite Rosa Moments in the series. i will put this all under the cut b/c idk how long this will be <3 i will avoid spoilers as much as possible in case anyone reading this wants to maybe check out the series (though if you do feel free to reach out for like. a list of relevant triggers/content warnings, b/c i am happy to provide).

ROSA VASQUEZ my darling. okay so rosa is a character introduced in the second book, and she is a d e l i g h t. like... the whole series centers around a group of people who work at a shitty gas station next to a shitty small town, and rosa is introduced as one of the newest employees at the gas station.

rosa is just. baby. and i don't mean that in an infantilizing way, i mean that in an I Love This Character way.

she's introduced as this incredibly sweet, bubbly gal who's excited to work at the gas station despite the fact that the people there keep treating her like shit even before she's hired. i'm not going to talk about calvin ambrose (a minor character in book two) in depth but i am going to hunt him for sport for being both sexist AND racist towards rosa. and for other reasons but that's a big one.

one of my favorite things about rosa is that like... the protagonist, jack, misses her first day of work SEVERAL times and so he can't train her!!! and eventually she gets so fed up that she comes to confront him! because rosa is a sweetheart but also she stands up for herself and others and I LOVE THAT.

and of course she's not mean but she does tell him off BUT when she finds out he had uh. very important and understandable reasons. she apologizes and he apologizes and anyway rosa and jack being nice to each other and being friends. it brings me joy.

and anyway rosa ends up telling jack that she's not going to work at the gas station actually, and she and jack wish each other well.

BUT S I K E HER NEW WORKPLACE ~MYSTERIOUSLY BURNS DOWN~ AND JACK'S BOSS TELLS HIM ABOUT IT BEFORE THE NEWS KNOWS ABOUT IT. AND THEN TELLS HIM TO MAKE SURE ROSA WORKS AT THE GAS STATION. WEIRD VIBES BUT OK!!!

anyway ok actual favorite rosa moments.

my favorite rosa moments from book two:

when jack is training her on and she is taking Super Careful Notes in a little notepad and taking the job Very Seriously

when jack runs out of things to train her on and she ends up like. deep cleaning the gas station out of frustration.

when she finds the box of videogames in the closet and gets REALLY EXCITED until she finds two dead mice in there. and then she asks jack if they can hold a funeral for the mice.

the mice funeral, where rosa gives an adorable and heartfelt eulogy for the mice

"rosa i'm sorry but you were floating off the ground and chanting in a voice that wasn't your own and we panicked" "oh. i'm sorry. i didn't mean to."

rosa just. she brings me joy. she is a delightful breath of fresh air in this series and even though jack is my All Time Favorite, rosa is up there too.

anyway uhhh some Rosa Headcanons That I Believe Are Canon And You Can't Tell Me Otherwise:

rosa is trans. i refuse to entertain arguments about this. how do i know? i just know.

she is also really short!!! she and jack are both incredibly tiny and everyone else is tall

i headcanon rosa as a biromantic asexual mainly b/c that's what i headcanon jack as, and i think the idea of them having that Solidarity is a super cute concept.

i like the idea of jack and rosa as having a kind of sibling-type bond. that's my ideal relationship dynamic with them.

rosa is implied to be one of the youngest/probably The youngest member of the main cast so i like to think she's a somewhat recent college grad who's just trying her best.

she absolutely likes baking. you cannot convince me otherwise.

in my AUs and such, rosa has a cat. he is a sphinx cat and his name is Mister.

okay this is long but uhhh last thing i will share. i do have some Art of rosa but tbh i'm not super happy with it </3 i will instead share a meme i made with tupperbot with rosa. a quote that i think sums her up as a character.
