EVENT REPORT: Azusa Tadokoro Special Live Concert 2019 ~EQUAL~
Voice actress and musical artist Azusa Tadokoro held a solo live concert at Katayanagi Arena, in Ota, Tokyo, on her 26th birthday, Sunday, November 10th, 2019.
Celebrating her fifth anniversary since her debut, and entering her sixth year as a musical artist, Azusa’s first arena-class concert put on full display her growth and strong appeal as a singer, performing 19 songs in total. Her powerful and passionate voice and musical style, aptly nicknamed “Tadokorock,” combined with her band’s skillful performance and her fans’ voices completed the experience.
From the very first song, “Gimme Shelter Brightness,” Azusa and her band went full throttle, setting the breakneck pace with “1 HOPE SNIPER” (TV anime “Trickster: From Edogawa Ranpo's ‘The Boy Detectives Club’” ending theme #1) and continuing with the in-your-face rock tune “spit out.” As if responding to the challenge of her first large arena concert, Azusa displayed a polished performance, and the crowd responded in kind, cheering and shouting along with the music.
After delivering a heart-pounding first block, Azusa showed her usual heartwarming side as she spoke from the stage. Imploring the audience to enjoy every second in this arena atmosphere, she continued her intense, expressive set with “Zettaiteki Rock Star” and “DEAREST DROP” (WorldEnd: What Do You Do at the End of the World? Are You Busy? Will You Save Us? opening theme).
Through her next song, “Little Soldier” (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime ending theme), Azusa drew her audience into the music with her clear vocals, and put a range of emotions on display.
The second section of the concert featured an acoustic performance by Azusa and her band. Azusa, who has said she enjoys singing gracefully with a simple acoustic accompaniment just as much as she does with a full rock sound, performed one of her album tracks, “Boku wa Sora o Tobenai,” with a simple one-guitar arrangement. She expressed her gratitude to her fans and supporters with the set’s second and final acoustic song, “Tsubomi no Koe,” a song dear to her heart that she received as a gift on her 20th birthday.
Finishing the acoustic corner, Azusa exclaimed “I turned 26 today!” Recently, Azusa showed a new and different side to her charm with a fresh, short hairstyle; laughing, she told the audience that after one of her juniors in her management agency remarked, “Azusa, your new look has a kind of ‘sexy wife’ appeal, doesn’t it?” she didn’t know how she should feel about it.
With her next two songs, the last-minute addition to the set list “Spectrum Blue” (B-side to her latest single “RIVALS”) and the mellow ballad “Slow Regret,” Azusa’s strong, warm voice filled the arena.
“Time to punch through to the end, are you with me?” shouted Azusa, moving into the final block of her set. After back-to-back rock hits “Come on,A-Z!! (before the CUE)” and “It’s my CUE.” came “Azusa 2go no Theme”, featuring her band members John Kanda (guitar/band master), Tomohiro Nagasawa (guitar), Shinichiro Iwakiri (bass guitar), MIZUKI (drums), and Kyoichi Shinozaki (manipulator). Azusa’s voice, together with the band’s powerful performance, touched the hearts of all in the audience.
Full throttle to the end, the last two songs of the main set were “Storyteller,” bringing the excitement in the arena to its peak, and “Equal,” the track for which the concert was named which features a backing chorus provided by fans who participated in its recording. Azusa previously explained that “Equal” is a track that would finally be finished through performing it live for her fans—Azusa and her band, together with the voices of those in the audience, made this track complete in the final moments of the performance.
Returning to the stage for an encore set, Azusa led off with “POSITIVE SHAKING,” wearing the same tacky jogging suit she wore in the track’s music video. The usually pessimistic Azusa instead brought positive energy to the arena—and immediately rushed off stage after the song’s outro only to reappear in the official T-shirt of the concert. To her fans, she remarked that anyone who didn’t understand the extremely unfashionable jogging suit gag should watch the music video.
Calling for the event photographer, Azusa asked to take a photo with the audience, but suddenly from backstage came a voice singing the first bars of “Koroaruki.” Takahiro Shibata, member of the band Wasureranneyo and the composer and lyricist who presented the track to Azusa, made a surprise appearance on stage for Azusa’s birthday. At first, Azusa was confused as to just what was happening in front of her eyes, but she joined Takahiro in a duet, overcome with emotion. Finally, she was presented with a large flag signed by her fans and staff, celebrating her 26th birthday.
“I was just overwhelmed with joy seeing one of my favorite artists under the stage lights!” explained Azusa. The euphoric feelings still lingering, Azusa performed the final songs of her encore set, “RIVALS” (TV anime Kandagawa Jet Girls) and “Jyunshin Always.” Her final performances of the night, passionate, intense, and enjoyable, represented the essence of who Azusa Tadokoro is as an artist.
Azusa remarked that, it being her first arena-class concert, she was quite nervous, and worried whether her performance was worth the effort, but seeing what she accomplished this evening brought tears to her eyes. Declaring that she wanted to keep on having a great time with her fans from now on, she closed this performance to be remembered.
This performance will be shown in part on Friday, December 20, 2019 at 11:30 PM on MUSIC ON! TV (M-ON!) in Japan. Watch the replay to see a performance that pushes the boundaries of “Tadokorock,” as well as the unique charm of Azusa Tadokoro.
