jyn's known simeon long enough that she doesn't usually bother to knock when his apartment door is unlocked; today, however, when she waltzes in with her arms full, she makes her presence known as she crosses the threshold. "sommerfeld! you home?" she sets down her prepared box of gifts on the kitchen counter, then turns toward him with her hands on her hips. after weeks of him leaving her leftovers, she'd thought she'd repay the favor. though she's by no means a culinary expert, for his birthday, she tried to recreate some of his favorites for him ( and not to toot her own horn, it's actually not that bad ), so he wouldn't have to cook for the next few days. "i got you a gift. and no, before you ask, it's not a lifetime supply of rabies shots." her eyes glitter with amusement, "since i knew that would be your first guess."

ONE MIGHT THINK SIMEON WOULD EXERCISE MORE CARE WITH THE SECURITY OF HIS FLAT, GIVEN HIS PUBLIC VISIBILITY. regrettably, one would be wrong — although to his credit, he knows downstairs security is tight and that the only people likely to find their way all the way up here are people he’s cleared and placed on the visitor list himself. jyn would even have a key fob, if she would accept it, but it seems to ( for lack of a better term ) weird her out. today in particular, he’s expecting plenty of people to drift in and out for his birthday, although the official celebration isn’t scheduled until friday, so he’s left the door unlocked as he goes about his day at his leisure.

at the moment, he’s curled up in one of the inviting corners of his sectional sofa, ilsa curled and purring contentedly on the blanket in his lap. on the television plays some episode of unsolved mysteries, definitely marking at least his third in a row. freshly showered, he wears a set of matching silk pajamas, hair still somewhat damp and slightly tousled. when jyn announces herself, he turns his head in time to catch her walking into the kitchen, touting a tantalizing box that brightens his eyes. receiving gifts is never a necessity, but there's something so warm about being thought of, especially by someone who presents as prickly as she does. his gaze drops only briefly as ilsa leaps from his lap and over the top of the couch to weave between jyn's ankles. beautiful and aloof, his little cat ( as accidental a pet as she was ) takes to few people and sim suspects it's something to do with jyn's similar demeanor.

" wasn't able to talk a doctor into giving you a bunch of doses of something that definitely isn't over-the-counter? well, damn, how disappointing. " the grin that stretches over his face makes clear that – as usual – he's hardly being serious. smoothly, he rises, without pausing the television, and vaults over the back of the couch, moving smoothly from the living room into the kitchen. truly, he'd wondered if jyn would stop by at any point. he's figured out by now that she likes him far more than she's willing to let on, but that's precisely why he questioned if he'd see her today. he, too, shies from closeness, from trust, simply in a way slightly less detectable by most. " something smells delicious! wait ... " he turns to her, beaming, his eyes all radiant warm sapphire. " jyn, did you cook for me? " a delighted gasp, a purposeful theatrical flourish, but he is no less excited regardless. " oh my god, you did. you did! I knew I'd get you. before we know it, you'll be admitting we're actually friends! is this my tupperware, too? " he leans his elbows on the counter, setting his chin in his hands, cheeky but with a genuinely elated flush. " don't roll your eyes at me, but you know this is, like ... really, really kind of you, right? "
