Okay, JPEG XL is actually rad. The size reduction I’m getting on my photos is insane. We need to make sure it succeeds just to spite Google removing compatibility for it in Chrome so they could push their own WEBP and AVIF formats.

Learnt about JPEG XL today. It's really cool, and a lot of people want it.
Why? First of all, it supports both lossy and lossless compression, meaning you don't need to use different image formats to suit different needs. Plus, since JPEG XL is based on JPEG, it's already a familiar format. Secondly, to compare image formats, JPEG XL has shown to be significantly better at compressing images than basically every other format out there. When comparing lossy JPEG XL with legacy JPEG and lossless JPEG XL with PNG, JPEG XL crushes in efficiency. Even HEIC loses to JPEG XL, if not for efficiency, for usage, as JPEG XL is licensed more liberally. Compare it to AVIF, a very recent codec, and JPEG XL still comes out equal if not on top. Finally, from a more temporal standpoint, not only is JPEG XL not subject to mold like JPEG is due to having a lossless option and not having to lossily reencode the same image as it gets posted again and again, it is also future-proof compared to AVIF, which is JPEG XL's main competition. AVIF only supports up to 8K(*, it can go above but it gets really freaky) and 12-bit color, while JPEG XL supports up to 1G (= 1 million K = 1 billion pixel resolution) and 32-bit color, which is enough fidelity for applications that may require it. Oh, and it's able to be loaded in parallel. And it only requires 15% of the image to be loaded before there's enough data to display a lower-quality version until more detail comes through (like how Unreal shows low-quality versions of terrain and models until they are processed enough to show everything).
So JPEG XL seems like a really good format, right? Why isn't it used everywhere?
Because Google decided to kill it off.
Google has dropped support for JPEG XL. And Google controls the web space.
So I'm going to use JPEG XL out of spite. I love this image format. I switched my Firefox to Nightly so I can use JPEG XL. And I'm making a game engine, so I can make JPEG XL the native image format, because why not :P. There's even a JPEG XL paint.NET plugin, so spriting is easy. And if you can compile it, FFmpeg supports JPEG XL with --enable-libjxl.
I'm going to keep this format alive.

hot take: they should replace .webp with .jxl. everyone (there are plugins and options for browsers and image editors to load .jxls tho) refuses to support .jxl becasue google's .avif is owned by google and as such is getting supported instead, but .jxl might be one of the absolute best file formats around
See, I think they run into the same issue. They both seem like really good formats! The problem is, I don't know if anyone's using them. I know Discord doesn't support embedding .webp's OR .jxl's. And who wants to download an image just to view it?
And some image editing softwares don't support those formats. Photoshop probably does, but it's Photoshop.
I'd be fine with either if I could actually use them everywhere, but as it stands, I can't.
And besides, it's an image format. I don't know if it matters that much unless you're an artist that needs lossless compression. And you can just use .png for that anyway! Your hard drive isn't THAT cramped for space, is it?

Terrible news. Apparently Jellyfin’s macOS client can’t use their own, in-house version of ffmpeg. As a result, macOS Jellyfin doesn’t support JPEG XL images. I tried compiling an ffmpeg version with JXL enabled, but it still won’t work. Sigh. If anybody knows a workaround/fix, I’d gladly appreciate it. For now, though, I’m thinking about trying a Linux Virtual Machine solution.

Their is nothing wrong with webp at all. And if you are going to bitch about webp for Google reasons, you need to bitch about webm too, as webp is an image format based directly on webm scene encoding, and both were largely developed by Google.
The *only* issue with webp is that some software has been slow to add webp support. And it isn't clear why. It is not like the case of Apple not wanting to support non-MPEG video formats, which is largely due to them having a big stake in the MPEG patent pools. Nor does it seem to a be principled stand against Google (companies other than Mozilla don't really do principled stands 99.99% of the time, and the 0.01% also has a profit motive tucked inside if you look)(and Mozilla has implemented webp, because there is no real reason not to).
Nor does it seem to be a technical stand. Seems to be just dev laziness/not caring. Of course at *this* point in time they may now be putting it off even longer on the thought that .jxl (jpeg xl) or *possibly* AVIF or HEIC will take over as the dominate image format (jxl seems like the favorite at this point from what I can see, though Google is trying to kill it, and due to Chrome dominance might manage it). But that couldn't have been their thought at first, webp was around and pretty successful for *years* before jxl or AVIF got big ("big" relative to currently, which is small). HEIC/HEIF was around about as long as webp I think? but really it's always been a weird Apple thing cause they love MPEG stuff so much (HEIC being an image format based on HEVC aka H.265 video format. Same as webp is to webm, but those two are patent free, same with AVIF and AV1). Anyway no one wants HEIC except Apple.
I miss the days when, no matter how slow your internet was, if you paused any video and let it buffer long enough, you could watch it uninterrupted
#also jxl has the coolest file extension#and I bet we could wrangle a pronunciation war out it like gif#somehow#if jxl doesn't 'win' it should be avif#both beat out webp generally as they are newer tech#but that doesn't make webp bad#jxl especially is nice for seamless upconverting of jpg#and does the best job of covering use cases of both jpg and png#and gif#as jxl does have an animation profile#though like with basically all other animated images#nowadays would be better served with a straight video codec#with a more 'gif-like' presentation#rather than a 'video-like' presentation#but yeah jxl would be great as almost all raster images could just be served as jxl#maybe a few cases still best served by tiff#cause tiff is weird as hell and does stuff hardly anything else does#Oh and .dng/raw for well raw camera files#jxl has a lossless mode (why it can take over for png)#but I don't think it has the stuff for raw images#(oh and dng is based on tiff... like I said tiff is weird)#(tiff is mostly about the container format more than any specific image encoding is why)#seriously though the anti-webp people are so weird
