I am glad you asked this! I suppose I might get myself into even more hot water, considering how I'm already combating one of the Main Four ships of Fairy Tail, but gotta do what I have to do.

I am of the opinion that romance wasn't really handled well in the show, but let's get into it.

NaLu

With NaLu, I think Mashima showed us Lucy sort of falling for Natsu, but while Natsu had some sweet moments with Lucy, it seemed like he still just thought of her as a friend. I'm all for believing they had something more than friendship—they could’ve easily had a wonderful best-friends-to-lovers thing going on— but I don't think Mashima properly conveyed what that would actually look like.

Most of the time, Natsu didn't treat her much differently, and you really just don't see many (or any) actually romantic moments. (It's usually Natsu being concerned for Lucy, but I mean, he's like that with the rest of his guild mates too. You just see it more often for Lucy because she’s one of the main characters.) I think Mashima needed to let Natsu mature and come to terms with his feelings before the ship could take off. That never really happened though.

Regardless, I honestly still like it. I've said this before but being best friends with the person you date before you date is important to me because then you can be real and upfront and yourself in front of the other person, and not pretend to be someone else to impress the other. I think Lucy and Natsu have that with each other, and they both genuinely enjoy the other's company. I can’t imagine Natsu with anyone else than Lucy, but Natsu has some things he needs to figure out first.

A solid 5/10 for how well they're written; I like to see their moments, but as an endgame ship, it needs a lot of work. And while I rank Jerza higher than this one in terms of how the author did writing their relationship, I actually like NaLu better because I like Lucy better than either Jellal or Erza.

I don't really know what the general verdict on this ship is. I'm pretty sure it's popular? I know it’s in the Big Four, but idk if there are strong anti Jerza factions opposing them. Anyway, I think this ship might've been the best Mashima created. I remember during my first watch throughs, I thought it was the most romantic thing I'd ever seen. The almost kiss scene? I was absolutely devastated that it didn't happen, that Jellal lied.

Now? I think it's actually a quite healthy relationship! The childhood sweethearts thing, though a trope, is an absolutely adorable one, and the way Jellal took care of Erza when they were young is so sweet. I find the arc where he's "evil" to be really cool, that Erza has to battle her old feelings for him to take him down. In the end, Erza finds it within herself to forgive him, especially since he was being controlled by Ultear anyway, and to help him move on and do better during the Nirvana arc. Then he escaped prison and continued to work on ways to atone for his sins, even though he'd been controlled! I think that was testament to his character, that he felt immense guilt for the terrible things he'd done even when it wasn't his fault. (Unlike juvia, who has no guilt even though everything is her fault).

And how Erza encouraged him and stood by him through it all, that even though she died inside, she let him turn himself in after Nirvana, crying for him all by herself? Wow, just beautiful. How Erza let him lie when he said he had a fiance because she knew he wasn't ready to be happy yet? How Jellal lied that he had a fiance because he knew he wasn't ready to be with Erza until he atoned?

I think the way Mashima wrote them was just beautiful. There were things that Erza had to forgive, and yet she did it without just ignoring his issues. Unlike gr///via, where juvia has no clue of her glaring faults and makes Gray feel bad about himself, both were aware of their own flaws and the other’s flaws, and acknowledged them and did their best to move forward and not let their past define them. I will say I haven’t seen 100yq or the end of Fairy Tail, so idk if it devolved or not, but from what I’ve seen and remember, it was quite well done, even if cliche.

A solid 8/10 for me in terms of how it's written, a point deducted just for the slight unoriginality and another just because I'm not the most excited to see it.

Gajevy

I remember that my seeing fanart of Gajevy was the thing that spurred me onto watching Fairy Tail in the first place all those years ago. That was when I knew absolutely nothing about the show, and I thought Gajeel and Levy were the main characters for some reason.

In any case, it was a cute ship when I first watched it, but during my most recent watch through last Fall and Winter, I gotta say it’s just too cliche for me. I found the 2 of them falling for each other way too quickly. Like Gajeel hurt Shadow Gear really badly, and then Gajeel apologized (good for him, juvia has yet to) to them and Levy forgave him quite instantly (good for her I guess?); it’s just that Gajeel took a hard, hard 180 degree turn from absolutely despicable and heartless to fighting to the death for Fairy Tail and his guild mates. It didn’t seem that realistic.

But then there was nothing nothing nothing between them. Then Gajeel and Levy somehow got all these romantic moments in the Tenrou Island arc?? Since when did either of them care that much for each other? The whole “bad guy turned good, and good girl falls for bad guy” thing just wasn’t exciting for me (which is weird because I feel like I normally would be excited for that trope because villains are cool) especially when Gajeel turned good too easily and Levy’s character isn’t really all that well explored. She just seems bland, not much personality; she likes books and that’s basically it. There’s no real reason for Gajeel to like her, except maybe out of remorse??

And how Gajeel somehow redeemed his soul with ease? It was weird. I mean, he was a bad bad guy who beat up a helpless Lucy for fun. He should’ve apologized to her too, and the entire guild for that matter, but he only did to Shadow Gear as if to build up their contrived relationship. I see no real motivator for him to change his ways besides being lonely?? Not having a home??

Maybe I nitpick that too much because it’s good to have character growth, but it doesn’t make sense to do it so quickly and is just another example of Mashima’s bad habit of writing really wicked villains and then reforming them as soon as they get defeated.

Anyway, their ship is a solid 3/10 for me, maybe less; idk I don’t like watching their moments really at all—they just bore me and therefore I’m not invested in their relationship —but I don’t detest either character or viscerally hate their ship. However, it was built on a very toxic foundation, considering how Gajeel beat Levy and her buddies within an inch of their lives.

Other Loves?

There aren't too many other love things going on, ones that people would probably be invested in anyway. The Alzack x Bisca ship is really cute, how they like each other and are guild partners, but they were both too shy to show it. Then they married and had a daughter so that was quite adorable, especially that lil filler episode with the snowglobe. Uhhh I mean Jude and Layla Heartfilia kinda flunked thanks to Layla dying and Jude being a butthole. Scorpio and Aquarius? A solid comedy ship. I like how such an ornery lady got mellow and gushy over man, though her constantly putting Lucy down for being single kinda got old. Er idk what else is there really. I'm definitely not thinking hard enough about it, but the Main Four ships are really all that comes to mind, in terms of what Mashima made canon anyway.

Closing Notes

I guess in general I am not a fan of Mashima's romance writing skills. The absolute deplorability of gr///via and the glaring faults in NaLu and Gajevy just don't add up for him. He relied heavily on tropes and somehow even failed to use those correctly. I guess that's all I can think of to say on the subject for now. Thank you again for asking!

Other Fairy Tail headcanons noone asked for

Yes, I have more. Again, be prepared for the longest post, but also for probably some Frenchisms and inaccurate English.

- Human-hating-and-eating dragons existed long before the war, but they were few, as human meat wasn't that good for most draconic tastebuds... Most of the dragons preferred to just ignore humans, as they were seen as lesser beings by a big part of the dragon population.

- Dragonof and Montes Secreta are a rare show of dragon-human symbiosis. The dragons protect the territory from invading forces, be they human, dragon or otherwise, and the humans take care of the dragons and feed them.

- Dragons and dragon slayers hoard. What exactly depends on each individual's interests.

-> Natsu likes to hoard stuff that makes him think of his friends... or that belonged to his friends before he hoarded them.

-> Gajeel hoards metal (because food), comfy stuff (mostly cushions, pillows and sheets) and he began hoarding books when he began to form a friendship with Levy.

-> Erza, of course, hoards her armor and weapons. She has a very difficult time parting from any of her belongings, which is why she always over-prepares for quests. The slayers and herself realize the origin of her "problem" when her parentage is discovered.

-> Rogue collects frog stuff. He had a passion for frogs as a child (seems like a headcanon I share with @pencilofawesomeness hehe) that never really went away. So each time he goes on a quest and sees anything ressembling a frog? He buys it. Frosch has many maaaaany frog onesies, in all the colours imaginable, as they also share Rogue's love for frogs, but her favourite is the pink one (yes, in my head, Frosch is a girl).

-> Sting hoards jewellry and gems. He loves the colours and the sparkliness.

-> Laxus collects music. He does not realize he hoards it until he hears the other slayers talking about their hoards and realizes he has a lot of vinyls in his house.

-> Erik/Cobra hoards miscellaneous stuff that catches his eye for longer than 5 seconds. Usually, it's small and he got in the habit of hiding everything in places he marks to find later, since he never had the stability of having a nest/cave/territory that belongs to him until after he was pardonned with the rest of Crime Sorcière.

-> Wendy hoards tea sets. She loves them, she loves to look at them, and each time she can find one that calls to her, she'll buy it and add it to her hoard. She also has a special tea set for visitors. It is the only tea set that people other than her and Charle/Carla can use or touch. Noone outside of the slayers, exceeds and Levy know that.

- The god and demon slayers also have biological modifications to get closer to the creatures they have the ability to "slay". Gray has little horns that his hair hides, he has night vision, which makes his eyes reflective in the dark (something that has freaked out a few guild members and people he had to fight against) and his teeth are very SHARP, although they're smaller than dragon slayer fangs and narrower.

- Juvia has had a very stern talking to by Cana, Mira and Erza about her harassing of Gray. Gajeel was not happy to see her so despondent afterwards, but when she explained what happened, he gently told her that it was something she needed to hear, because her behaviour was not OK. She still struggles with obsessive behaviour, low self-esteem and anxiety, but she gets help from Mest.

- Gray and Juvia have a talk when Juvia realizes that she does not want to be that person, and they finally get to have a healthy friendship. No romance, though, as Juvia finally grows out of her unhealthy obsession with Gray and realizes that's not what love is supposed to be.

- As a coping mechanism for... everything, Juvia bakes. A LOT. And she offers her confections to everyone in the guild. You know she is having a bad time if she brings a lot of pastries, and if it lasts for more than a day, it's very bad. Mira and Gajeel have developed a system without meaning to when that happens. Mira works on getting Juvia to cheer up and Gajeel gets her to open up to him.

- Mest never turned Brandish against August. Nuh-uh. No sir, he definitely did NOT. Also no pedophilic thoughts about Wendy. He finds her warm and adorable and he loves her as a little sister, thank you very much. He was also head over heels about Lahar and it took years to get over his death. He is understandably very weary of falling in love. He also develops a crush for Macbeth/Midnight after Crime Sorcière was legalized and the members came to mingle with Fairy Tail more often.

- Most of the members of the younger generation, at least, are not heterosexual (because sexuality is a freaking continuum, people). I might expand on this at a later date if anyone is interested.

- Jellal and Erza have a very serious talk and both work on their Tower induced trauma for years before they decide they might want to try a romantic relationship. Jellal is the one that has the most difficulty healing from the past and seeing Erza as a person instead of his saviour/deliverance/light and stops putting her on a pedestal.

- Erik talks to Kinana about Cubellios and how he thinks she might be his lifelong friend. Since Kinana has bad amnesia, she asks Mest to help her retrieve her memories, and, although everything is still quite hazy, she remembers her attachment to Erik. They slowly work through her memories, but Erik is very respectful and does not push Kinana into anything, he just wants to know her, and, maybe, if that could happen, his friend back. They end up slowly falling in love.

- Juvia is like a little sister to Gajeel. He is very protective of her, and she is the only reason he joined Fairy Tail. They stay close through the years, and Juvia ends up being the godmother of Gajeel's and Levy's children. Juvia is understably over the moon and spoils the heck out of her nephew and niece.

- The original appearance of most of the Celestial spirits is quite different than what it is nowadays. Leo/Loke's original appearance is closer to his Eclipse Celestial Spirits ark than his current one. He is a fighting spirit, after all.

- As there are 88 (accepted) constellations in the sky, there are 88 keys. The silver and gold ones are the most known, but there is another set: the platinum keys. Those keys are as powerful as the gold keys, but not much is known about them.

- Since opening a key gate demands so much magic power, celestial wizards have slowly decreased in numbers. Celestial magic is coming closer to becoming a lost magic every year. It does not help that Celestial wizards are so often used by dark guilds as sacrifices for dark intents.

- Many civilians think that, because there are "light" guilds and "dark" guilds, some magic powers are considered dark and light too. Which, in turn, makes them afraid of any kinds of magic that is not in the accepted definitions of "light". That's one of the reasons why Freed, Mirajane and Bickslow hated their born magic for so long. It took them years or even decades to stop the self-hate, with the help of their friends and family.

- Since the awakening of his etherious nature, Natsu has been terrified of losing control. Which made him train harder and subtly distance himself from the guild. Of course, the other slayers, Erza, Gray and Lisanna saw right through him and Lisanna confronted him about it and he spilled the beans.

- NaLi is a thing. They're very cute together. Natsu is not interested by sex (yep, he's asexual), but he loves the proximity with Lisanna so sometimes they do have sexy time, but not often at all.

- Mira is a big gossip, and she does the shipping thing, and she does try to imagine ship-kids, but when someone tells her they're uncomfortable/they don't want kids or she sees that she makes them so, she stops and apologizes and never does it again. Because Mirajane is a respectful friend that does not push her friends and family to follow patriarcal societal rules, thank you very much.

- Gray inherited his devil slayer magic genetically. So he was born with it. But it was dormant or sealed until Silver awakened it (it makes more sense that way, in my mind).

- Fairies did exist, but they are extinct in Earthland. They do still survive in another dimension with other elf-like beings (because I said so and because I like the idea of a Sidh in-universe, because travelling to parallel universes is a thing, so there!)

- Talking about that, there's a difference between parallel universes (Edolas) and dimensions (the place where Angel's "angels" dwell). A parallel universe is a different kind of world on the same "wavelength" as the one Fairy Tail exists, and a different dimension is in the same universe, BUT on a different level (you know, the 2D, 3D and so on, and so forth). But because I do not want to go full-on-nerd-mode-that-will-never-stop-talking-about-the-thing, I'll stop here.

- Minerva and Rogue are a couple and you cannot tell me otherwise.

- Talking about the saberkitties, that guild desperately needed to heal after Jiemma. It took them a lot of work to get to a level where everyone began to trust in their guildmates and the guild itself. Minerva is the one that had the hardest time, as she was the daughter of the abusive jerk and his favoured and longest victim.

- She also had the hardest time after Tartaros, because it took months for her to have a human body again. Sting, Rogue, Orga and Rufus were there every step of the way for her. She loves them with all her shriveled little dark heart.

- She stays a badass with some violent and cruel tendencies, but she's mostly awkward, nowadays. She feels most comfortable with Rufus and Rogue because they're calm and quiet. She also adore Frosch.

- It took Yukino months to decide that she might possibly want to rejoin a guild. She goes to Sabertooth to confront her bad treatment and the trauma from her excommunication and has the longest talk with Sting, although she sees that he's far from his cocky, rambunctious, confident self (because Tartaros + losing his dad + Minvera stuff going on). They have a heart to heart and Sting apologizes profusely about how he acted until the Eclipse gate thing. She accepts his apology, but still hesitates to rejoing the guild. Noone pushes her, but Sting asks her to at least stay around for a few days so that the other guild members can see her. She does, and gets apologies from everyone. However, she does not see Minerva, and since she was one of the biggest offenders when it came to bullying in the guild, she really wanted to confront her, but the situation is explained to her. Yukino rejoins the guild after a few weeks of hard thinking, and patiently waits for her very needed conversation with Minerva, although she does not push for it when she knows that things must definitely not be easy for the spatial mage.

- Orga is half Fioran and half Encan. That's why he weats the clothes he does, and has the tatoos. The facial paint he has during the GMG is because of a warrior tradition from Enca. He goes to visit his maternal family at least once a year. Although noone outside of his friend circle (which was noone during Jiemma's tenure) knows of that tidbit about his background.

- Freed, Rufus and Lucy are all from high society, but they never mingled or even talked. Freed's father was very strict and rarely allowed him to go to parties because he was never good enough, and then when his magic realized itself, he was too ashamed of the creature that was his son to even consider it. Rufus, on the other hand, was too young, but he saw Lucy from afar. He just never talked to her. Freed only knew of Lucy's name, but Lucy wasn't aware of him at all, because she would do anything to not do a good impression.

- Talking about Lucy, she is very sensitive to any kinds of comments about her physical appearance due to a childhood with the pressure of having to look like a perfect breedable doll, due to her father's expectations and just high society. Because she was seen more as an asset than a human being. And even though she rebelled about all the expectations, she internalized them still. She still struggles about it.

- Another thing she struggles with is: independance and freedom. Two things she never really had until she decided to flee her home. That's one of the reasons she kind of lets Natsu drag her on adventures too, because making decisions for her life and having the responsibility of her own destiny freaks her out and gives her major anxiety. She even had panick attacks about those.

- Lisanna had a very hard time getting used to Edolas, but also getting used to being back to Earthland. Her siblings and close friends (aka Natsu and Happy)? Even more so. Lots of angst and not believing it to be true and stuff. Also, she had quite a bit of difficulty reconnecting her Earthland friendships. She tended to see the guild as their Edolas versions for a while. But now everything's fine.

- The Raijinshuu bonded over their eye magic and their respect for Laxus, because he was the one to help them and make them join the guild.

- Laxus, under his not-approachable, cocky veneer, is just a very awkward sweetheart that has no idea how to interact with humans outside his three friends. He exudes big introvert energy and you cannot tell me otherwise.

- After the war, Laxus is lost. He does not know what to do without his grandpa. But the guild has to go on, so he tries to hide his grief and buries himself in work, because there is a lot to do. Of course his team sees it and with a lot of coaxing, he does properly mourn Makarov. He also goes to Porlyusica to talk about him and get help with his lungs (because there's scar tissue caused by the bane particles still there).

- For weeks on end, Erza and Laxus talk about who should be the next master, even though Laxus does not even want to take on the role anymore. And because no consensus is reached with just them, they decide to have a guild poll and let everyone choose their favoured candidates (could even be someone else, they do not care). In the end, poor Laxus still ends with the responsibility, and when he discovers all the paperwork his grandfather left, he nearly has a breakdown. Fortunately, Freed comes to the rescue, and when she hears about it, Lucy also helps. Lucy gets closer to the Raijinshuu and the new master that way and Freed, Laxus and her talk at length about their childhood, expectations and the verbal abuse they had to live through.

- When he discovers the amount of money that team Natsu makes the guild lose every single mission, and the destructiveness of most of the guild members, he decides to change that with the help of other guilds. The new Council, hearing this, jumps on the opportunity to try and get the guilds more involved because they do not want to keep on dealing with Fairy Tail nonesense. They have better things to do.

- Hisui gets more involved in the politics of the country and tries her best to make relations better with their neighbours Bosco and Seven. Since Bosco was hit the worst by the forces of Alvarez, she also organizes humanitarian missions that she sends to all the guilds in Fiore. Getting missions from the crown is a never seen before occurrence, but she thinks that it's a cause important enough to get involved. Her project pays, as relations with Bosco thrive after that.

- This also makes the population more curious about the other countries of Ishgar, as Fiore has always been mostly self-sufficent and autocratic.

- The Raijinshuu + Laxus (also, I hate that Laxus isn't officially part of the team and they're just his followers, come ooooon!) is actually the strongest team of the guild, but since they're not official, well... it's not official. Even without Laxus, the team is very efficient and rarely destructive. They have the advantage of all the members being quick thinkers and all of them are quite strategic, and if Freed tells them to do something, they do it without question. And even though Laxus is very powerful, he is also very analytic when he goes on missions, and even in fights. (Yes, I have a bone to pick with team Natsu when it comes with how they operate. Also, that particular way they work? Well, makes Lucy and Wendy not blend with them very well)

Ok, I think that's it for today. I might add to my list of headcanons, because I have MANY (too many to count).

Here's a little list of things I'd like to tackle at one point or another:

- where all the (time travelling) dragonslayers originated from and how they came into the care of their dragons

- Fairy Tail ships, sexualities and the why (aka, why I think nearly none of the characters are straight)

- Acnologia's backstory, but done in a way that does not make him one-dimensional, because the King of dragons deserves it, thank you very much

- Why I dislike the characterization of the cast, and what would have worked better from a narrative point of view (from my point of view as a reader, writer, someone who LOVES character development, but also maybe a bit someone who's actually studied literature in Uni)

- Maybe also ways for the magic system to actually have consequences? Because in the canon material, we've got nearly nothing for the main cast and I am annoyed.

- And probably some more worldbuilding, because you know I LOVE me some worldbuilding. I also think way too much about stuff, so yay?

hmmm... famous? I'll assume you mean the Big Four + fraxus, yes?

this is a very interesting one. it could mean "what story fits their plot best" or "which characters are they the most like" or even "which traditional fairy tales do you think they'd like the most" - all of which are wonderful questions, glorious-san!

i think the way i shall answer this... hmm. I'm  answering this as "if you were rewriting a fairy tale with these ships as the characters, what would you write?"

i do apologise for this, though, because most of my knowledge of fairy tales comes from general knowledge and disney films

well, for nalu, I'd do cinderella. lucy can relate rather a lot to cinders, I'd imagine - lost her mother young, never had a particularly good relationship with her father, dreams of love and freedom she couldn't have (she can now, of course, but not originally). lucy is beautiful, blonde, whose good looks are subtle but certainly overwhelmingly stunning. natsu is charming, handsome - maybe not the most romantic or rich or a good dancer, but he is certainly loyal, and that's what prince charming is primarily known for. prince charming may not have remembered cinder's face all that well, but he roamed the whole land to look for her, never tiring until he found his princess. natsu would definitely do that for lucy - whether you ship nalu or not, it's true that he is truly devoted to her, and would run all over fiore with a glass slipper to find her. and lucy would definitely be covered in cinders by the end of the tale - and that's what cinderella was named for, after all! 😉

gruvia is a harder one. beauty and the beast comes to mind, although perhaps a role-reversal would be more accurate. gray is handsome, this is true, and when he first met juvia - well, she wasnt exactly the kindest. they were enemies, but like the beast, juvia fell for gray almost instantaneously. she changed herself for him, so he would love her - she stopped harming his friends, she joined the light, she wasnt so full of old traumas and misery. she is obsessive, like the beast, and like beauty and the beast, their relationship... wasnt always healthy, exactly. but she changed for the better, and gray fell for her. i think theyd fit the role rather well - not to mention, bickslow would have a great time making the crockery sing.

gajevy also reminds me of beauty and the beast - levy is clever and beautiful and gajeel... well, isn't - but I've already used that, so I'm thinking something else instead. i could maybe say disney's rapunzel, because tangled is a banging film and gajeel is a little like flynn ryder. we could have them be kristoff and anna, from frozen, or maybe westley and buttercup from the princess bride. frankly, a lot of fairy tales fit their dynamic - elegant young lady falls for dastardly-villain-turned-hero. i want to think of princess and the frog - almost there is a bop - although im going to settle on mulan. mulan is a badass warrior, beautiful, clumsy and clever. she's ambitious, cunning, works hard and fights harder. at first, shang dislikes mulan, similar to the way gajeel dislikes levy. however, during the story, levy makes gajeel sip Respect Women Juice, and gajeel continued to chug it for breakfast for the rest of his life. gajeel loves and fears his badass, cute-ass wife - something i refer to as The Moominpappa Complex - and levy is kinda gender-nonconforming too!

jerza reminds me of the film enchanted - have you seen it? it's very good! - because both of them canonically have feelings for eachother, but both reject those feelings and tell themselves they don't deserve the other. also erza is like snow white because she lives with several funny little men (except we call them the fairy tail guild)

fraxus is .... uh, princess and the frog? laxus is cocky, a little smug, kinda selfish, but hard-working, no-nonsense freed helps him realise the errorof his ways, and teaches him to be less arrogant, less high-and-mighty, and to value his friends. also i REALLY wanna see laxus as a frog and bickslow as a crocodile with a trumpet.

I'm sorry this took so long but i hope the wait was worth it!! its a wonderful question that so many fantastic ideas can come from, so many fics can be prompted by and so many people would answer differently!! are there more ships you'd like me to do it for? perhaps you'd like me to do ships as different ancient myths, or something similar? itd be my pleasure!!!

ship biases for macbeth & loke !

( ship bias! ) in no particular order.

Macbeth:

+ Sorano: Its one i’m happy with either otp or brotp (its an original ship from way back but i havent developed it or had a chance to think much about it so its probably more sitting in brotp land atm, it needs more love in any case). They have been together forever, they Know each other. They Get it. Which could also be bad in a way but idk. She is also one of the few people he actually cares about :’) and they just have such a Look 

+ Meredy: Ever since Oracion Seis joined CS i’ve been thinking about these two! They’ve done bad things, she’s working to be good. He’s.......well, not really working on that. It could all go so Bad but also just be interesting. He might mess with her and i dont think my boy is really capable of a good kinda love but kjngkfjn they look nice together ok. And i think they could have a good dynamic and she really just. Puzzles him. I’ve also kinda actually had a bad experience with this ship in the past but I’m trying not to let it taint the ship as a whole! 

+ Levy: She’s a feisty little nerd and he is here for it ok. I have been craving at least a brotp with them for like 5 years for real 😭 i think her intelligence will get him hooked especially. But also again, he’s gonna mess with her and tug at any insecurity she has, so theres gonna be some rough patches for sure. But also i just think they’d look cute.

+ Juvia: HE KNOWS ALL ABOUT HER OK she and gajeel destroyed some of the guilds Oracion Seis were running and in my book he was impressed. He has long been interested in her since then, she’s highly skilled and she’s smart and he also just doesn’t really understand her

+ Millianna: they’ve both survived the Tower and he remembers her from there. A running theme for him in any sort of relationship is for him to push the boundaries and just be an ass, he likes to get into peoples minds and mess with them (it isnt until they either break or he starts to respect them more that he eases up) but with Milli i think he will just let her be. He knows what she’s been through and for once he doesn’t want to further someone’s pain. She’s also super frickin cute and I’m a sucker for the bubbly girl and emo dude aesthetic. Also he really likes cats so they can bond over that.

Honorable mentions: 

Erza (honestly just hateship all the way 😂), Cana (fun and chill vibes im thinking), Flare (in a verse where she’s joined CS maybe and idk. they both have fabulous hair and are pretty but with a vein of psycho), Lucy (i used to ship it a lot, i think her intelligence and strength would interest him, i like the light and dark aesthetic too, but its also another ship i had a bad experience with, so its a little lower on the list for me atm), Mary (shhhhh ok they would be fun brotp or otp)

Loke:

+ Cana: Canon teammates, good friends. Beautiful looking pair. They have such great potential and with the right plotting it could hurt so good. I imagine they had a lot of trust before he was called out as being a spirit and i’d love to explore them working on rebuilding their connection. Angst and tension central.

+ Lucy: Their bond is so so so so important to me in whatever form it is. I’ve shipped them for a long time but also its difficult because of him being under her contract, so honestly I’m absolutely happy for some one-sided love or tragic forbidden love/believed unrequited stuff. He would do anything for her in any case.

+ Juvia: a guilty pleasure ship tbh. She deserves someone as generous and open as he is, and he’s a gentleman who will treat her right. I imagine mostly a soft friendship to lovers kinda thing (but obvs with some Drama bc he’s a spirit), he’d just be a very supportive and good friend to her and then the feels creep in? She’s also hella pretty. Also his friendship with Gray could also come into play too, like in a version of Juvia and Gray being close (bc gdi i would support a healthy friendship with those two) which leads to Loke spending more time with Juvia and he would approach her more without Gray too.

+ Yukino: I mean, again there’s some difficulty with the spirit/summoner and spirit/human thing but at least Yuki isnt his summoner (tho hmu for an AU maybe) and like. She just deserves someone nice like him.

+ Levy: she’s pretty and smart and deserves more love. I would love to explore their dynamic in general tbh bc i mean they were guildmates for a few years and i think he would have had some fun flirting/teasing her a bit and she’d maybe blush or roll her eyes or think nothing of it and never guess he actually does like her !

Honorable mentions:

Millianna (cute kitties, ok more of a brotp probably but still adorable), Hisui (the whole noble knight and princess thing gets me every time, plus i’ve seen a couple of cute interactions once upon a time),

 gruvia

Hi, there is a reason I was not able to write about it again.

This canon ship and canon Juvia are indeed like water, being almost impossible to grasp. How can one analyse things without consistency and shape? I guess by getting wet and all-embracing since every concrete scene analysis will be counter able by other scenes.

Additionally, Hiros Mashimas established definition of “love” within the franchise makes it also really difficult to argue anymore within this universe…

at the same time it demolished also any value ability of this series, meaning and morality which it may had hold for the real world so far but ok he was willing to pay this price to find an ultimate plot excuse for his poorly execution of his story and  characters towards the end, while he was overworked by three big projects and travelling, leaving him not even time to think and to conclude his masterpiece appropriately .

A refresher for all, his definition of love would be that one can only truly love somebody if one wants the best for this person despite hating this person for other character sides  or due to actions he or she did in the past.

This definition was established when Marvis was saving the “life” of her sexual abuser who threatened humanity and worse and pretty much now justifies Nalu, Gruvia, Jerza who may be to some extend abusive ships…...

It was a newly made definition and contradicts the previously established love definition throughout the series.

Love was previously a feeling of home, acceptance, friendship, support, understanding, despite how strong you are, where you come from or how beneficial you were, as established not only within the guild the members towards their master, family, friends

Lucys love for her guild based on these experiences was stronger than towards her own father who provided her everything except enough love since he was still grieving about the loss of her mother and who even wanted to determine her partnership.

Ren and Sherry become a couple being compatible as fuck, Bisca and Alcsec the same, Gajeel fall in love with Levy rebuild a love relationship by scratch based on these values and oh boy their relationship is beautiful.

 In case of our other canon ships well lets only focus on gruvia

 Despite people interpreting the water prophecy different than I do, Gruvia was not really treated nicely at the beginning of the series

Juvia who experienced happiness in her life at the first time by meeting Gray thought she can obtain him and secure an eternity happiness by doing so. I selected the word obtain intentionally, since she was using it herself.

Her happiness resulted due to Grays kindness towards her.

To obtain Gray she offered him to protect him, and she started to try to monopolize him, which is seen at different covers as well.

It was shown that she didn t understand and cared for his will to protect other bonds. And sadly she didn t till the very end eventhough she stated differently. First she didn t understand his bond to Erza, Lucy, Lyon and at the End Natsu, being surprised that he would help Erza despite Erza being stronger than him or most others, Lucy by fighting even injured or hanging out with her eventhough he had now Juvia, his bond to Lyon was interpeted as lover instead as a brother, protecting Natsu against Zeref, was for her also really “new”. Simply put, she does not understand that he finds happiness by several people for her a monopolized lover is the key for happiness and there they are not compatible.And this is portrayed in media as if that would be the case contradicting the whole franchise most important message. 

( She reminds me of Pinocchio but she never received a more human becoming development) 

Furthermore she is portrayed as a real fangirl, not loving gray for who he is since she does not even know, ask, understands him but for what he did for her and later on also for others? There is even a scene she is dreaming gray up being different shonen characters she would all marry.

It is also not as if others would not have offered her to get a closer relationship to them… Juvia is just not interested in that.

��However, she claimed that fairytail was making her happy at the famous Cana Game Scene so she seemed to be pretty happy with them.

This scene is really important, aswell as the ova where she proved that she would trust Gray over his behaviour tricking everyone.

 These were scenes where I personally thought it could develop into sth but these were the only exceptions... so ... yeah he let me down even there I guess. 

 Juvia was willing to change to get Grays affection also willing to lose her identity and self independency since being dependent of gray would mean being together with him, as fighting partner or as a person he has to protect now. (I rather preferred her when she said she was stronger than him and wanted to protect him, but well I guess she is not really just fine to love him only as she putted it and wants to feel loved..... by heroic harmful ways like he did for the others... male authors have a really war time driven love declaration definition)

 So what is the problem… “it is fucking crazy that a person is doing that” ( Grays wording), however is she a person or is she water indeed… which can produce blood conveniently ….. Can one expect her even to behave like a human?

 Yes to not be alone is nice but well she did not give him really an option to chose somebody else and then it got a habit…… is this really love?

Well maybe

I mean I would also love my dog, for eating my left overs and following me around and being there if I am sad losing my dad

 To be in a relationship, maybe intending to get a family together and to live together 24 h a day

In my regard not enough 

I at least would like to have a partner who respect my boundaries, knows me, supports me how I need support and not how my partner thinks what I would need

I would like to be also a friend of my partner and I would like to have friends beside this partner.

But ok, I also have a different definition of love, love as a feeling of extreme friendship, trust, understanding, comfort and would love to be equal partners playing together the game called life

 But oh well this is just a realistic healthy relationship goal I have and I thought and assumed Gray would as well by acting like a rather normal nice person which seemed to have changed suddenly to make way for the next generation, how lovely

 However, this is fiction and the words and scenes of the all mighty author are inviolable

Except maybe if he would contradict himself.

Or if he would have admitted that he hadn’t enough time to think things though and would have said that he would have rushed things or if mistakes like scar positions and plot inconsistency may exist

For my part at least, I do not trust Juvias imagination, wording and memories, and by looking at canon material I wonder if you would

 How exactly is it nice to throw water slicer at lucy and gray in in the police ft spinoff an attack which destroyed the avatar girl in the avatar arc  ? Only because he prevented Lucy to fall and hurt herself?

Juvia really evolved into a better person hasn’t she

NYCC 2017 - All the Love for Fairy Tail & Hiro Mashima

My greatest wish besides having the chance to meet Hiro Mashima was to personally thank him for Fairy Tail. Ever since the series ended, I have had an overwhelming desire to communicate to Mashima-sensei that I have developed lasting and irreplaceable friendships, a guild of sorts, through Fairy Tail. His series had such an indescribable impact upon me personally and my interpersonal-relationships. This is my unbelievable experience at my first con in my very first cosplay, which of course had to be Juvia Locker, my absolute favorite character!

More beneath the cut - This story is long, even though I excluded many amazing things that others have already reported on! I hope you enjoy the story and the NYCC con images below!

To start this story, I need to quickly explain the impact Fairy Tail left upon my life! I was in a desperately dark place in my life several years ago. I came out of another bad, abusive relationship after going through a streak of them. I isolated myself, believing it was better that I was on my own, preferring that to the risk of being hurt once more. However, this train of thought is very dangerous. Please don’t ever allow yourself to believe these lies. They are treacherous thoughts. If you ever have these thoughts, please do not isolate yourself. Please seek support. I should have honestly sought it much sooner, but thankfully, through Fairy Tail, I found it! Through a series of events, I came to know @kanarenee, @squisherific, @dooshiedoosh, @rieriebee, and so many others. In the last several years, these girls have shown me what loving and supportive friendships look like. I have grown to have confidence in myself and my art that I never had before. I started to love who I am! I wanted to let Mashima-sensei know that all his hard work brought this about.

I wasn’t planning to go to NYCC. And even when we learned that Hiro Mashima was coming this year to NYCC, while my heart yearned to go, it didn’t seem like the slim chance of meeting him was worth the cost to get there. However, as more opportunities were announced, I realized I simply could not let this chance slip by! I may not have had a strong chance to meet him, but I had a chance nonetheless! Somehow, everything seemed to start falling into place that would open the doors to allow me to go. I received a job offer to move closer to my family, which opened up a chance to take the month of October off for the move. Flights to NY were reasonable. And my friends encouraged me to take a chance at my first cosplay.

I worked so hard all September to sew together the dress and hat for Kitty Juvia based on a graffiti Mashima-sensei drew at the beginning of this year. I thought it would be one of the easier outfits to put together in so little time. Then @kanarenee encouraged and helped me bring to life my idea to make a Gray-sama Love bag! We had so much fun, we made one for @squisherific to thank her for all of our beloved plushies!

Also, thanks to the encouragement of my beloved friends, I printed a few of my art pieces to present to Mashima-sensei as a gift to show my appreciation for all his hard work. I chose my favorite piece (Max Gray-sama Love Juvia), my recent piece of Lucy as Lucy is Mashima-sensei’s favorite character, and my Hot Springs Gruvia piece. I was so very excited, but at the same time nervously anxious to give Mashima-sensei my art. I was worried so many pieces would be too much for a gift. I was also anxious about Mashima-sensei’s response. Especially as there are so many talented artists who are leagues ahead of my own skill.

We learned that all signings and panels for Hiro Mashima were lottery based, except Sunday. We entered every lottery we could. We won seats for the Friday panel, but not a single one of us won a signing. We all hoped Sunday that we would have a chance to meet and thank Mashima, even though we couldn’t all go to NYCC on Sunday. It was looking rather bleak that we could thank Mashima-sensei and present our gifts to him.

But I believed somehow it would work out! Everything else fell into place so easily and I was so happy with how my cosplay turned out. It was hard for me to believe that so many pieces would come together in unexpected ways for us not to be able to meet and thank Mashima-sensei.

And unbelievably, it did… in the most unexpected way! See the story here!

 Gray-Sama Love Bags

Originally, I wasn’t going to make these bags. It was thanks to @kanarenee that this idea came to life. And I never anticipated the overwhelming response they received. Kodansha noticed @squisherific with her bag and called her over. The Kodansha rep fangirled over the bag and requested a picture. She took a picture of both bags and Kodansha posted it on their official instagram!

I was pleasantly surprised how so many lovely Fairy Tail fans at the con praised the bags. Everyone was so unbelievably kind!

And then Mashima-sensei saw the Gray-sama Love bags! He loved them! The translator and his staff all loved them. The cameraman wanted us to lift the bags for the camera and Mashima-sensei himself requested a photo to be taken for his own memories of this trip! The picture below was taken when Sensei’s friend took a photo of my cosplay and the Gray-sama Love bag! ^^

To say the least, I was on such an incredible high!

 The Private Signing

Not only did Mashima-sensei adore the Gray-sama Love bags, but Sensei was so incredibly kind and genuinely interested in the art that I presented to him. I felt so humbled that Sensei would take such a generous interest in each piece. He took time to look at each piece, and Sensei especially loved the Lucy piece! Sensei was so kind and his reaction to every piece filled me with indescribable joy! As an artist, I can’t even begin to explain how breathless it was for the creator of Fairy Tail to like my art. It is beyond dreams!! It is a feeling I never imagined and still surreal! I am so grateful to Sensei’s pure kindness towards his fans! ^^

Funny enough, there was some confusion, and the fact these were gifts for him was initially lost in translation. Sensei initially thought I only wanted to show him these pieces. Which is incredible to me. Mashima-sensei initially thought this, and still took the time to look at each piece with excitement. Again, my breath caught!

I corrected the misunderstanding with the translator and she relayed to Sensei that they were a gift. Sensei was so very happy and said “Thank you” in English to me and then said that he was going to hang them up in his home and studio. There are no words to describe my joy. I fumbled over my words! But Sensei was so kind and spoke with me and @dooshiedoosh some more while he drew my Juvia. @dooshiedoosh already divulged this conversation here! Check it out because it was a juicy bit of conversation for you Gruvia fans!!!

I will always treasure this forever! Thank you Mashima-Sensei!

The Love for Juvia and Gruvia!

I was pleasantly astonished to see that Juvia was one of the most prominent cosplays from Fairy Tail, rivaled only by Lucy. Especially as a Gruvia fan, it filled me with so much joy to see just how much Juvia and Gruvia is truly loved and cherished in the West! It is often times so hard to see when the Gruvia fandom takes so much heat for supporting Juvia as a character and Gruvia as a ship. We recently have had to experience this with a troll that was going around and viciously attacking Gruvia fans for supporting and adoring this ship.

However, the fans of NYCC taught me that there are SO many more adoring, healthy, sweet, and amazing fans who support Juvia and Gruvia! So many genuinely nice and caring people excited about Juvia enough to cosplay her and giddy to draw Gruvia! So many who wished to take pictures with all the Juvia cosplays!

At the Kodansha booth, there was a wall dedicated for fans to draw and leave messages for Sensei. I was there and drew Gray-sama and Juvia together, thanking Sensei for Gruvia! Alongside me was another fan who adored Gruvia and was drawing Gray-sama and Juvia together as well. At the time there were no other ships drawn on the wall. The following day, another well-known artist drew Gruvia on the wall as well! It was amazing!!

I have to say this experience was so much more incredible than I could ever imagine. There is so much I left out, but to share it all would take a ridiculously long post! And this is already so long!

It was truly amazing and so refreshing to see love and joy when the internet can often times be vile and resentful. Don’t let the few vile trolls that stalk and harass fans to put you down my lovely fandom! We are filled with so much love and have support across the West for our ship!
