Good, Bad, and Odd: Just Shut Up and Dance

Good

Jason Derulo! Really felt in his element. Got to show off his star power, DANCING, and charisma. The song really did a fantastic job intermixing two strengths without dissolving either. Both NCT 127 and Jason Derulo felt like they were flexing their own performance strengths WHILE complimenting each other.

Song shows off cultures without dissolving them! All the cultures are connected via dancing, but each culture shows off their own form of it. No one is shown as a prop and cultural dances aren’t performed by people who didn’t originate that culture. Integration done respectfully.

Musical coherence and purpose! So many, many times we see artists’ name slapped onto a song clearly for name recognition alone. The song itself clunkily inserts them like a movie which added 3D effects in post-production for a money grab. BTS - Idol and BTS - Mic Drop feat. Desiigner are prime examples. (There are many others but these are the immediate ones that come to mind.) This is more akin to BTS’ collab with Steve Aoki, where you can both feel Aoki’s presence in the video (Steve is a puppeteer and BTS are his marionettes) and in the mix of the song (different layout to the drops, entirely different feel in the choruses and breakdowns), albeit in a slightly different way. For Let’s Shut Up and Dance, Jason Derulo feels like a meaningful part of the song. His verses fit the mood, his vocals are pronounced, his delivery is believable. The lyrics he delivers and his message actually have something to do with the song, as well. This is a song that is heavily benefitted by the presence of both parties in such an awesome way I find it hard to believe.

Bad

The song itself isn’t the most amazing thing? I don’t know, trying to nitpick here honestly. The video greatly enhances the song, and the song itself isn’t too memorable. That being said it’s not bad by any means, and this is a criticism you could levy against basically any dance-heavy hit, so honestly this is rather moot.

Odd

Odd, but good: the dance breakdown! So this is something you’d almost never see in a solely korean video -- why? John, kpop/hip-hop videos have dance breakdowns all the time! What’s wrong with you? Hush, hush. Korean choreography tends to focus more on group synchronization. The movements are more basic (though they can still reach high levels of complexity and difficulty - hello Seventeen, EXO, BTS) but the precise synchrony of them is what blows your mind. In a korean music video you’d never see a close up of each member doing an individual freestyle (?) dance and executing their own flow. The only ones that come to mind are Ten’s Solo in NCT 2018 and NCT U’s Baby Don’t Stop, but the former was a VERY brief featurette in an already dance-focused performance, and the latter a duo. This is another example of the benefit of combining different visions, as I really enjoyed seeing Taeyong and other members of NCT 127 showing their individual flow and skills in a setting I think we only have the privilege of seeing because of its western influence. So, odd, cause we’d never see it if it weren’t for the western crew, but cool because I thought it brought a new flavor.
