Halloweenathon:Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Ahhhhh Tim Burton.One of the first filmmakers I knew of and one of the few where I have seen pretty much every feature film as well as some of his shorts and TV projects .There are admirers of his work,there are those who despise his work,but no matter which camp you fall into most seem to agree.....His early stuff is better then his later stuff ,which is where I am .Yeah Burtons last good movie,for my two cents was Big Eyes in 2014.....and his last REALLY GOOD movie was 2007's Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street .Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah its been a while since Burton really wowed me ,with his films either being forgettable or just plain bad .So for Burtons latest film he decided to go back to basics and do a sequel to his second ever feature ,Beetlejuice.Now I ADORE the original Beetlejuice,its a childhood favorite ,a unique spin on the Haunted house idea with a tour de force performance by Michael Keaton .....And a film I neve thought needed a sequel .So the big question going into this is.....Does this work

In this 2024 film Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder ) now host of the TV show Ghost House ,goes back to Winter River with her stepmother Delia (CAtherine O Hara) and her estranged daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega ),for the funeral of Lydia's father Charles Deetz ,when Astrid is lured to the underworld and Lydia must make a pact with Beetleguise (Michael Keaton ) to save her daughter

So there is a huge flaw in this film.....Its story is a mess .The actual PLOT of the film doesnt kick off till an hour in ,theres like 4 villains,and theres a whole subplot with Monica Bellucci that so unnecesary it could be cut an nothing would be lost .Its all style over story.....AND THANK THE GODS FOR THAT.Twist here,the fact this film is very flawed does not bother me at all .Thing is Burtons strength has never been story,it is visuale and atmosphere and a big problem with later Burton is he seemed to lost that and focus too much on story which is a weak point for him .This film is Burton going back to his roots and what works for him,we got puppets ,stop motion,wild lighting ,ghoulish makeup and a bunch of great actors just hamming it up .I can see this being a deal breaker for some but me I just kind of rolled with it.I like the crazy visuals,I like the dark gags ,I like that iut randomly becomes a Mario Bava film for a flashback ,I like Monica Belucci as this stapled together soul sucking monster gal ,I like Willem Dafoe as awannabe Clint Eastwood with an exposed brain ,I really loved how they handled the character of Charles (That was fucking hilarious ) ,I loved Bob the shrunken headed zombie ,I like Justin Theroux as Lydias asshole boyfriend ,I....Well honestly Astrid felt like a 60 year old mans understanding of a teen girl ,but I like Ortegas performance and reconciliation with Lydia .I adore seeing where Lydia is 30 years later and of course Ryder is amazing ,O'Hara is HILARIOUS As Delia (And I adore how they end her story ,it makes sense ) and The Ghost with the Most ,the same gross perverted chaotic creep from the first film ,and while I think its kind of lame the climax of this film is the same as the first ,Keaton is still funny and I like that while spin offs have softened Juice,movie Beej is still a bad guy

So is this one of Burtons best.....No,not at all .Did I enjoy it and think its good,oh hell yeah ,if you like Beetlejuice,these actors or have an admiration for early Burton,this is a fun blast.At the very least McArthur Park is now stuck in my head

I am dyslexic, unfortunately this was something I only found out a few years ago (my mother always knew, she just didn't want to tell me for self esteem reasons). It's hard to say if I have moderate or severe dyslexia. Moderate or severe dyslexia just means the level of severity of the difficulties you may have. There is no hard and set rules as to cut off points because there are different issues that need to be taken into consideration.

North Dakota in Winter

An astronaut aboard the International Space Station took this detailed photo of snow-covered plains in northwestern North Dakota. The scene is crossed diagonally by a short 12-kilometer (7-mile) section of the Des Lacs River valley. A highway and the thin, contorted path of the Des Lacs River occupy the valley floor. Part of a reservoir, formed by a dam along this section of the river, is visible in the lower-left corner of the image. The straight line of a railroad crosses the view diagonally on the image’s right side.

Almost the entire landscape in this view is divided into rectangular fields. These are best seen along the left margin of the image. Summer images show that these rectangular features cover the entire field of view, although many were obscured by snow when this photo was taken in winter 2023.

Breaking the pervasive snow blanket are dark-toned lines of trees that make up windbreaks. Windbreaks protect farm fields against winds that contribute to soil erosion and are aligned north-south because the dominant winds blow mainly from the west. Several small, dark patches in the view are also windbreaks. These are shorter, L- or U-shaped lines of trees surrounding farmsteads.

The Des Lacs valley is bordered by low cliffs about 60 meters (200 feet) high. The mid-morning sunlight illuminates cliffs on the northeast side of the valley while shadowing short tributaries on the southwest side. The hummocky surface in the top-left part of the image is dotted with numerous small ponds and wetlands, known as a prairie pothole landscape. This irregular surface is interpreted by scientists as the sediments deposited by glaciers that covered this part of North Dakota more than 10,000 years ago.

The prominently shadowed tributaries occur only on the southwest slope of the Des Lacs valley, with no equivalents on the northeast side. The reason is that the slope on the southwest side is much steeper than the hummocky surface on the northeast side. Tributary streams flowing down the southwest slope therefore have greater erosive energy, allowing them to carve the small valleys of the tributaries.

Astronaut photograph ISS070-E-105381 was acquired on December 11, 2023, with a Nikon D5 digital camera using a focal length of 1200 millimeters. It is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations Facility and the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by a member of the Expedition 70 crew. The image has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed. The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory as part of the ISS National Lab to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet.
