Canât Go Back Part 16
A/N: This chapter is very Justin-centric. I felt like Addy and Justy needed a day where they didn't need to worry about boys or moms. Just a day to be kids. Itâs kind of filler but I like it. Itâs a light chapter. As always, feedback is always nice and much love. - EmÂ
Things were awkward between us for the next week. We had agreed to table the discussion about his dad and had come to a tentative understanding about Justin. We had never had a fight like that before so, we werenât really sure where the lines were yet. I learned that his dad was a line you donât cross unless invited. He learned that Justin was a line that was going to run parallel to our relationship, whether he liked it or not. Montyâs behaviour at school was different too. He was a little nicer for people to be around. Not Tyler Down, but I couldnât really blame him. The kid was fucking creepy. Monty was even sort of polite to Justin.
By the following Monday, things had gone back to normal. Our texts were longer and less to the point. He was⌠well he was more Monty at school than he was for a few days. His friends didnât seem to pick up on the change. But I did. Heâs trying. I got dressed in in my comfy light wash jeans, because Justin and I were going to the mall after school and paired it with a light pink tank top with an old red and black flannel. The flannel had been sitting at the back of my closet for quite a while. I found it while I was going through and cleaning it out for donations. âMorning Dad.â I called as I heard him pass my room. He cleared his throat and grunted in response. He must have just woken up.
Downstairs, dad was making a cup of coffee while he read the paper. âMorning Addy.â He nodded when he heard me. Definitely just woke up. Grabbing a granola bar for breakfast, I went through and gathered up my books for school. Once they were neatly arranged in my backpack, I set it by the door. My book from last night was still sitting on the island. I took it and flipped it open to my last page since I had a little time to kill before leaving for school. Deciding I would get too lost in the book, I rethought and took it over to my bag to take to school.
âJustin and I are going to the mall after school. He needs help shoe shopping. And I need to grab a few replacement shirts. I had to throw some out that were too old.â
âHave fun. Donât forget to grab your momâs prescription on the way home.â
âI wonât. Do we need anything else while we are out?â
âNo, we should be okay. Iâll text you if I think of anything today. Your mom will be late today too. One of her students needed to schedule an afterhours meeting.â
âOkay. See you later dad.â
âBye.â
Justin was early today, which surprised me. At least until I noticed his duffel bag. He must have spent the night at Bryceâs last night. He was mingling with his friends. I waved as I passed them to my locker, not paying anyone much mind. I watched them a bit from across the hall. They were goofing off as usual. Justinâs smile seemed a little forced. Iâll talk to him after school. My eyes scanned the group. When they landed on Monty, I couldnât stop myself from smiling. And I will admit I may have possibly spent more time than strictly required, simply checking him out. It was during my perusal of his body that I noticed something familiar. A little too familiar. My eyes widened and I looked down. That⌠thatâs⌠we are wearing the same shirt. Spinning around and opening my locker again, I ripped off the flannel and shoved it in my locker.
Casually making my way over to the group of boys, I made sure to rub my arms like I was cold. âMorning Justin. Morning Boys.â I shivered.
âMorning Addy.â Justin said, as he leaned in to hug me gently.
âWhereâs my morning Addy?â Bryce smirked.
âOh, Iâm sorry Bryce. I must have forgotten we say morning to each other. Morning Walker.â
âMorning Addy. Are you cold or are you finally going to tell us all what your secret to doing well in school is?â
âIâm cold. And Iâve shared my secret with you before. Itâs called actually opening the books they rent to us and reading them. Hey Justin, do you have an extra sweater? I spilled water on my other shirt like right after I left the house.â
âYeah, I have one in my locker. Go ahead and grab it.â
âThanks. Have I told you youâre the best lately?â
âNope.â He laughed.
âWell, now I have.â
I was in a good mood when lunch rolled around. I nodded to Courtney in the hall on my way to the cafeteria. She was talking to Marcus about one thing or another. Tyler was watching Hannah in a way that had it been anyone else, wouldnât have been weird. Clay was watching her too. I smiled and waved at him. He nodded back. âHey Addison.â Tyler called. I turned around and he waved his camera at me. I waved my book in the air like I was busy but stopped for the student life photographer anyway. He snapped his photo and I continued on.
Since I was in a good mood, I didnât even think twice about sitting with Justin and his friends. âAre we eating at the mall?â Justin asked when I sat down.
âI donât see why not. Iâll have to stop at Baker Drugs on my way home though. Mum has a refill waiting.â
âOkay.â He nodded and bit into his sandwich. Jeff bounded over to the table.
âGuess who got above a C?â He asked, proudly.
âYou?â Anders asked in response.
âYup. Now I can finally make Clay make a move.â
âHeâs going to hate it Jeff.â I said.
âI know. But he needs to put himself out there.â
âMake a move on who?â Monty asked.
âHannah Baker.â Jeff replied. âEveryone knows he likes her.â
âI donât really pay attention to the Jensen kid.â He shrugged.
âHe hates dances.â
âI know. But a deal is a deal. I get above a C he goes to the dance. Are you going Addy?â
âWasnât planning on it, no.â
âWhy not?â Bryce asked. I rolled my eyes.
âI hate school dances. The only not crappy part is that Tony is DJing.â
âYou have to go. Iâm going.â Justin begged with his mouth full.
I shook my head. What is it with boys not chewing their food? âI went to the last one. Itâs Bryceâs turn to babysit you.â
âI babysat last time.â
âNo, you didnât. You were sneaking off behind the bleachers with your date. I babysat. Plus, I canât tie a tie. And neither can Justin. Ergo, your turn.â
âYes you-.â Justin started. I kicked him under the table.
âIâm not going to the stupid dance. Besides, I have homework.â
âAddison. The dance isnât for like three weeks.â Jeff complained.
âI know Jeff. But I am not Clay Jensen. I have friends. I have a life.â
âArenât you friends with Clay?â Scott asked.
âYes. So, I know he keeps to himself. But that doesnât mean Iâm going to the dance.â
âYouâre not going to the dance yet.â Justin smiled devilishly. I rolled my eyes.
âDid you finish your English paper?â
âMaybe.â
âIâll take that as a no.â
âDid you?â He challenged. Monty choked on a laugh. Smooth. Bryce quirked his brow.
âDid you just ask her if she finished a homework assignment?â
âYeah.â He shrugged.
âYes, I did. Why do you ask?â
âJust curious. Since youâre on me about my homework.â
âJustin. The last time she handed something in late, was like seventh grade because she was out of school the day it was due.â Monty added.
âI remember. She had a stress rash because of it. How do you remember?â
He shrugged. âIt had never happened before.â He noticed that? And thought it was important enough to remember? Thankfully before any more questions could be raised, the bell rang.
âIâll meet you at my locker after school Justin.â He gave me a thumbs up before walking away, already in conversation with Zach about something.
Justin and I drove to the mall, singing along to whatever was on a Spotify artist radio. âDo we want a pretzel now or later?â I asked as I pulled my purse out of my backpack in the car. I had changed back into the flannel from this morning while I waited for my best friend at my locker.
âNow.â We said in unison.
Pretzels in hand, we wandered around the mall for a while. âI need some new shirts. I had to throw a bunch out because they were really old and not able to be donated.â
âYou want opinions?â
âOf course.â
âShoes first?â
âSure.â
âDSW?â He shrugged and nodded. At the store, we headed straight for the menâs section. I pointed out a few pairs that seemed like they were his style. He made a face at the first couple of pairs and shook his head. Shrugging, I pointed out a pair of Nikes that were on sale. He gave me his best seriously look and I laughed. âThey could be nice.â
âYeah. If I want to look like my feet are three sizes bigger than they are.â
âYou know what they say about guys with big feet though Justin.â He flipped me off. âWhat about these?â This time, he actually tried them on. They were not the right ones.
After a few more busts, we decided it was time to try a different store. Famous Footwear was having a sale. We stopped in there. Once again, we headed straight for the menâs sneakers. He tried a couple of pairs of Converse. Neither of us were very big fans. âWhite?â I asked, pointing out a pair of Pumas.
âNo.â He shot down. I nodded and we kept looking. He picked up a pair of grey and white Nikes. âThese are nice.â
âThey are.â We found his size and he tried them on. âHow do they feel?â
âGood.â He flexed his foot a few times before trying them out to walk. âYeah, these feel good.â I smiled and we placed them back in the box to go pay.
Shoes in hand, we made a quick pitstop for coffee. Justin brought up the topic of the Winter Formal again while we walked around trying to find some shirts for me. âAre you really not going to go Addy?â
âNo Justin. I donât want to go. And besides, I have no one to go with.â At least, no one I can go to a school dance with.
âYou can go with us.â
âGo with you and Bryce. And Bryceâs boys?â I quirked my brow, sharply.
âYeah. We donât bite. We are fun.â
âFun. Sure.â I muttered.
âYou could see Clay try to talk to Hannah.â
âOr I could sit at home and binge watch Pretty Little Liars.â
âI thought you said you had homework Addy.â
âYou know that was just so Jeff would let my excuse slide. For now, at least.â
âCome on. Itâll be fun.â
âIf I say Iâll think about it, will you drop it?â
âYes.â He nodded.
âThen I will think about it.â He made a fist pumping motion and I burst out laughing. âYou are such a freaking dork.â
We stopped at Target and looked around the clothes-he wasnât going to let me look at anything else-for a while. But nothing really felt like me when I looked at it or tried it on. American Eagle was a little better. I was able to at least find things I liked on the hanger and on me. âThis?â I asked Justin when I came out of the dressing room in a soft purple shirt.
âItâs nice. Makes your boobs look good.â
âThatâs always a plus.â I added it to the small yes pile. A blue one was next. He shook his head.
âNot your colour.â
âDidnât think so.â A couple more noes were added to the pile before we checked out. Aritzia and Zara were close by, but I didnât like anything on the rack enough to try it on. We made a quick stop at Madewell and I got a couple of plain white t-shirts.
âCan we make a Sephora stop? I need to replace my foundation.â
âWe can if you give me your wallet, so you donât spend all of your money.â
âI wonât spend it all. I literally only need a new bottle of foundation.â
âAlright. You have ten minutes to get in line tops.â
âYes Dad.â I shook my head. Justin scoffed jovially. He followed close behind me in the store to make sure I stayed true to my word. They were out of my shade in my usual formula. I grabbed a bottle of my backup formula instead. By the time we were done, I didnât even have the energy to make a stop at the bookstore. We decided to grab a slice of pizza to go instead of sitting in the food court.
Back in town, we stopped at Baker Drugs and got my momâs prescription. I grabbed a box of gobstoppers for good measure and grinned at Justin. âAre you spending the night? We can do movies before bed as long as you arenât a pain in my ass in the morning.â
âSure. Iâll let my mom know.â
At home, I texted Monty while Justin was in the bathroom. Hey, Justin is spending the night for movie night.
Okay. How was shopping?
Good. I got some stuff.
Awesome. Enjoy your movies babe. Justin came back before I could reply. âWho you texting?â
âJust Zach about our Government assignment. Do we want snacks?â
âOf course, we want snacks.â Together, the two of us went downstairs and raided the cabinets.
âHi Justin. Hi Addison.â Mum greeted as she came in the door.
âHi Margot.â Justin replied.
âHi Mum.â
âMake sure you donât eat too much candy you two.â She chuckled when she saw us trying to stuff a box of Swedish berries in Justinâs sweater.
âWe wonât Mum.â
âYes Mom.â
I put a bag of popcorn in the microwave. Justin and I ran upstairs with our contraband. We both changed into comfy clothes and arranged our candy on my bed. When the microwave beeped, I ran back down to get it. Mum pretended not to notice me grabbing an extra chocolate bar. I heard her laughing with dad about it though.
âThey really are quite cute together.â
âI suppose. Thankfully we donât need to worry about them being another kind of cute.â Dad said. No, you really donât.
Justin had Netflix pulled up when I got back to my room and shut the door. He was scrolling aimlessly. âI put butter on in the middle and the top.â
âWonderful.â He grinned. âWhat mood are we in?â
âSuperbad?â
âAddison! That is an R rated movie.â He exclaimed, scandalously.
âBut itâs funny.â
âSuperbad it is.â We got settled and hit play. After it was done, we scrolled through and picked The Social Network. Finally, just for fun to end the night⌠er, morning, we decided to watch the 2011 Footloose. Between the three films, we ate so much candy we knew we would wake up with stomach aches on Tuesday.

Chapter Two
Two days passed before she considered texting Inuyasha. She was glad she hadnât given him her number, it gave her time to process and decide what to do. Now that she had met him she was eager to know him. Despite her negative thoughts on the situation she found herself pulling out her phone to text him.Â
From: (Maybe Kagome?)
3:56 PM
Hey, itâs Kagome. If youâre free Iâd love to go out tonight.
From: Inuyasha
4:15 PM
Iâm glad you finally decided to go out. Iâm available, did you have something in mind?Â
From: Kagome
4:16 PM
Kinda. Could you pick me up at like 9? Dress cas
From: Inuyasha
4:16 PM
Mysterious. Yeah, Iâll be there at 9, where do you live?
Kagome gave him her address before sighing with relief and nervousness. She glanced at the time. She had a little time but was too nervous to do anything other than start getting ready. She showered and was blow drying her hair when she got another text from Inuyasha. She turned off the dryer and set it down on the sink, picking up her phone. He had sent her a picture of an outfit laid out on a bed. A red polo shirt and simple black jeans.
From: Inuyasha
5:56 PM
Will this be ok?
From: Kagome
5:57 PM
Lol. Are you getting ready all ready? =P
From: Inuyasha
5:59 PM
Just making sure I have something appropriate to wear. Since I donât know where we are going.
From: Kagome
6:01 PM
What shoes are you wearing?
He sent her a photo of a pair of black converse.Â
From: Kagome
6:01 PM
Lol. That will be fine. Looks like Iâm changing what I had planned though.Â
From: Inuyasha
6:02 PM
Why?
From: Kagome
6:02 PM
One sec.
Kagome ran to her room to lay out the outfit she had planned on wearing on the bed. She laid out her black leather jacket and tucked her red lacy camisole inside of it, grabbing her black mini skirt to lay beside it before heading to the door to snag her red high-top converse from the floor. She carried them to her room, setting them strategically and snapping a photo. She sent the photo to Inuyasha and laughed at the irony.Â
From: InuyashaÂ
6:05 PM
I thought you said casual? You look like youâre going on a hot date.
From: Kagome
6:06 PM
It is casual! Iâll see you in a few hours.
Kagome took her time getting ready, deciding to leave her hair down she curled it into gentle waves. After failing for the third time to get her shaky nervous hand to draw a wing on her eyelid, she sighed and tossed her pencil down. She crossed her arms across her vanity and laid her head down with a groan. She had apparently fallen asleep because when she lifted her head back up and glanced at the time on her phone it said 8:47.
âFuck!â She jumped up and looked around her room, she was still in her underwear and hadnât finished her makeup. âShit, shit, shit.â She was in a panic, her heart racing. She reached for the outfit on her bed, then stopped. Remembering that she couldnât wear that. She wanted to cry. âOk.â She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. âCalm down.â She told herself. âItâs just a date, he might even be late picking you up.â She opened her eyes and groaned, knowing that wasnât true. If anything he was probably gonna be there any second.Â
She went to her dresser, pulling out a black camisole identical in style to the red one she had wanted to wear and putting it on. She grabbed her light colored high waisted skinny blue jeans from another drawer and yanked them on, hopping around to get them over her butt. She tucked her camisole into them before doing up the button. She raced back over to her vanity and grabbed her eyeliner, giving the wing one more try, perfect. It perfectly matched the one she had on the other eye. âOf course.â She mumbled to herself, rolling her eyes. She gave the air a super light spritz of perfume before spinning herself in it. She waved at the air, hoping to disperse some of the smell. She should have put some on earlier so it had time to settle and not be so strong but it was too late now.Â
She dabbed some blush on her cheeks and a gentle sweep of highlighter across the tops of her cheekbones. Setting her brush down she took a deep breath studying herself in the mirror. She didnât look half bad, she was proud of the look sheâd managed to throw together in, she glanced at the clock, four minutes. She sighed in relief. She grabbed a pair of All-Star socks from a drawer and her leather jacket off the bed, making her way to the living room. She sat down on the accent chair to pull her socks on, and when she leaned down to pick up her shoes, they werenât there. She dropped her head in defeat before making her way back to her room to grab them off the bed. She was back in the chair and in the middle of tying her first shoe and tucking the laces into the sides when there was a knock on the door. Her heart jumped and she felt her nervous panic start up again. Pushing it away she called out towards the door. âItâs open!â
The door swung open and there stood Inuyasha looking like Godâs most gorgeous gift to womankind. Even in his jeans and polo, he was stunning. She blushed, looking back down to pull her other shoe on.
âI hope you knew that it was me. You donât even keep your door lo-â
She glanced up at him when he stopped. He was staring at her, and she realized that she was bent over so far that her boobs were about to pop out of her camisole. She smirked, clearing her throat to get his attention. âI keep the door locked at night.â She finished tying her shoe and stood. She grabbed her jacket off the back of the chair and tugged it on.Â
They rode in semi-awkward silence, Kagome was too nervous to talk and Inuyasha seemed⌠She looked over at him, he had one hand on the wheel, and his left elbow was propped up on the window, with his hand to his face in a deep contemplating gesture. She told him he should turn at the next light, and when they were heading down the next street she sat forward and gestured to a parking garage on the corner. Inuyasha finally found an open spot after a few minutes of circling and parked the car.Â
He followed her lead down the block, walking close beside her. âI thought youâd be more talkative.â Kagome said, glancing up at him out of the corner of her eye.
His gaze turned to her and her heart skipped. âSorry, lots on my mind. But youâre right. Iâm probably making a horrible first impression.â
âYou were the one that said dates are for getting to know each other.â She teased.
âRight I did. So, care to tell me about yourself?â He raised a brow at her.
âNot really.â She mumbled before stopping at an unmarked door on the side of the building. She smiled at him. âHope this is ok.â She yanked on the heavy door, and led the way in.Â
They were bombarded with loud thumping music and the sounds of a crowd, as they approached the bouncer Kagome remembered Inuyashaâs sensitive ears. She turned to look back at him, his ears were wilted slightly but his face didnât show his discomfort. âAre you going to be ok in here?â She asked, raising her voice slightly for him to catch her words. He raised a questioning brow but nodded. Kagome turned back to the bouncer.
âKagome!â The bouncer said, smiling. The big shouldered man had ginger hair and a scruffy beard. He stood from his stool and hugged Kagome briefly.Â
She smiled at him while handing him a fifty for their entry. âGood to see you, Doug.â She patted him on the shoulder and walked past.Â
Inuyasha followed, leaning down behind her to talk into her ear. âDo you come here a lot?âÂ
She looked back up at him, smiling. âNo, not really.â
âBut that guy seemed to know you well.â
âI know a lot of people.â She led him over to the bar area. The club was fairly large but there was nothing fancy about it, it looked like a normal club, the only thing that made it special was how exclusive it was, not many people knew it existed.Â
She ordered two shots of Buffalo Trace from the bartender and handed one of them to Inuyasha. âYou do drink right?âÂ
He rolled his eyes at her before taking the shot and setting his glass down. He motioned for the bartender for two more. When the bartender handed them over, Inuyasha scooted one towards her with a raised brow. He motioned with his head towards the shot that was still in her hand as he took another. âNeed me to finish that for you?â
She stuck her tongue out at him before taking the shot in her hand and followed it with the one on the bar. âWe didnât come for a drinking contest. I know Iâd lose that.â She said to him. âHow many you need for a buzz?âÂ
He shrugged. âA lot more than two.â
Kagome laughed. âYou can decide how many you want.â She motioned for one more and when it was handed over she told the bartender to put all their drinks on her tab. He nodded before walking away. Kagome raised her shot to Inuyasha before downing it, then made her way to the dance floor. She didnât wait to see if he followed but went out and began dancing to the dubstep style music. When she felt hands on her hips she glanced behind her, it wasnât Inuyasha but a very drunk blonde girl. The girl smiled at her and tried to get Kagome to join her group of dancing friends. Kagome glanced around for Inuyasha but couldnât spot him over the crowd. She was dancing with the girls for a bit and drawing the attention of some guys when she spotted Inuyasha not far away. He danced like he was straight out of a Justin Timberlake music video, and a group of girls had surrounded him. He was allowing them to dance on and around him but was keeping his hands to himself.Â
Kagome slowly made her way towards his group, starting to feel her slight buzz. She watched him dance from the edge of the crowd, a smile on her face. She liked that he seemed to be enjoying himself. When his eyes lifted and met hers, she found herself biting her lip through her smile and giving him a small wave. Still dancing, he made his way towards her and when he was close enough, he reached past some of the other girls to take her hand. Pulling her through the crowd and into his chest.Â
âHi.â He purred into her ear.Â
She blushed up at him, âHi.â
He began dancing with her, keeping her close against him. âIf you donât come here often, why are we really here Kagome?â His face was close to hers and she suddenly found it hard to breath.Â
âMostly to see how youâd react.â She confessed, flushing.Â
He put his lips to her ear. âDid I pass your test Kagome?âÂ
She leaned her own head up toward one of his ears. âNot yet.â Pulling back she began dancing with him, while pulling out her phone and shooting off a text. She tucked her phone back into her pocket and turned so her back was to him. He stepped forward to place a hand on her hip, and began moving along with her.Â
Theyâd been dancing for only about five minutes when one of the female bartenders approached them, carrying drinks. Kagome gratefully took them from her, turning to Inuyasha with a grin. She handed a shot glass to him. They clinked their glasses and took their shots. Kagome handed the empty glasses to the woman and she in turn handed over two more. Kagome handed another to Inuyasha. He raised a questioning brow at her but joined her. They did one more together before the bartender left them.Â
When Kagome turned back to Inuyasha he pulled her against his chest. His brow still raised, he leaned down to sniff her. âYour shots werenât really shots were they?âÂ
She fought down her grin and shook her head. âThe ones at the bar were though.â
He shook his head at her. âWhy would you do that? You do realize itâll take a hell of a lot more than that to get me drunk. So why are you doing it?â
âI wanted to see if you would notice. Did you smell it or was it that you were questioning my tolerance?â
âI know you can only hav-â He stopped abruptly.Â
Kagome leaned forward. âWhat did you say?â She spoke loudly over the music. âLook Iâm sorry if I upset you. I didnât mean to do that if I did. We can still have a good time.â
Inuyasha shook his head and took her hand in his, he pulled her towards the exit. She frowned but didnât resist. When they were outside back on the sidewalk she finally spoke. âLook Iâm sorry if it really upset you this much.â
He was leading her back towards the garage but suddenly stopped and turned to her. âIâm not upset, Kagome. But now that I know this was all some kind of weird test and you didnât actually want to be here, Iâm going to take you somewhere else.â
âYou are?â
âOf course, this was hardly a real date apparently.â He scoffed.Â
They made it back to the car and were on the road soon after. Kagome felt a wave of guilt come over her. She felt like she had messed things up but was still conflicted if dating him was even a good idea.Â
âWhere are we going?â She asked.Â
âYouâll see.âÂ
Fifteen minutes later he parked outside of a large building. Unbuckling he smiled at her. âCome on.â
He took her hand and led her up the stairs to the entrance. There was a man dressed in a suit standing at the door, he opened the door for them as they approached. âMr. Takahashi, we havenât seen you here in some time.â
Inuyasha nodded to the man but went inside. There was a huge ballroom inside, large round tables took up one side of the room and there was a huge dancefloor. Couples twirled and danced around each other on the floor, each one was wearing a suit or long gowns. Inuyasha stopped near a coat attendant, turning to try to take Kagomeâs jacket from her.
âInuyasha!â She hissed at him, holding her jacket firmly around herself. âWhat are we doing here? I am not dressed for this!â
âNeither am I, itâs ok. No one's gonna care.â When she gave him a panicked look he leaned over to speak into her ear. âHave faith Kagome. Trust me.â
She looked into his honey eyes, trying to find something that wasnât there. She bit her lip before nodding and allowing him to take her jacket. She rubbed at her arms, suddenly chilly at the loss of the jacket on her now bare arms. Inuyasha handed the jacket to the attendant and took the stub from the man. He turned back to Kagome and chuckled a little at her nervous look. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and led her towards the dancefloor, rubbing her arm with his hand to supply her with some of his warmth. âItâll be ok.â He whispered to her.Â
Kagome looked around nervously, some of the people looked at them with odd looks but most didnât pay attention to them. There was no music currently but the couples were already waiting on the dancefloor for it to begin again. Inuyasha gave her a gentle squeeze before releasing her. When they reached the edge of the floor he turned to her. âReady?â He whispered.
She shook her head. âI donât know how to slow dance Inuyasha.â She hissed at him.Â
He took one of her hands and rested it on his shoulder before taking her other hand in his. âJust follow my lead, thatâs all you have to do.â Then the music started. He placed a hand on her waist and began to lead her through the steps. Kagome could only guess that it was some form of a waltz. She tried not to watch his feet as they moved, trying to feel the direction his body was directing her. She let out a slow nervous breath.Â
âI donât think Iâm good at this Inuyasha.âÂ
He smiled a sweet smile at her. âIt takes practice. Youâre doing fine.â
By the time the song was over, she was able to follow the simple pattern the dance seemed to be. The next song began and the steps seemed to be different and she found herself trying to follow the previous pattern and stepped on Inuyashaâs foot a few times. âIâm sorry!â She squeaked. She found herself having to watch his feet again to follow along. When the song came to an end she finally looked up at him and he was grinning at her.Â
âDoing ok?â He asked.Â
âHow do you remember all of this?â
âLike I said, practice. Youâre doing great. And my feet are fine.â He winked at her.
She bit her lip, blushing and looked away. They danced through a few more songs and she found that she didnât need to look at his feet through any of them. And when another began he pulled her closer, so she was pressed up against his chest. She looked up at him and saw a twinkle in his eyes.Â
âNow you canât watch my feet.â He teased into her ear.Â
Kagome found that she was glad that she didnât need to as she took the opportunity to rest her head against his chest, taking in the scent that was uniquely his. She sighed in contentment. After a few moments, Inuyasha laid his head on top of hers, moving his hand from her waist to wrap his arm around her. She relaxed, feeling comfort and safe in his arms, the feeling foriegn to her.Â
The song ended and she pulled back away from him, avoiding his eyes. She cleared her throat and pretended to straighten her shirt, slightly embarrassed that she had gotten so comfortable with him so quickly. The next song started immediately but unlike the others this one had a much quicker pace and seemed to be in the jazz genre.Â
Kagome shook her head, making a move to leave the floor. âNope. Canât do this.â
Inuyasha grabbed her wrist, stopping her from leaving. âCome on.â He pleaded.Â
She laughed pulling against his grip. âNo! I canât do that, look at them. I donât know how to dance like that.â
âThatâs ok, itâs still fun.â He yanked again, pulling her to him. âJust watch and try to mirror the movements.â When she stood there stubbornly he laughed. âYouâll have fun, I promise.â He joined the others in their fluid movements, eyes never leaving hers. âCome on, Kagome. You know you want to. Youâll never learn if you donât try. Besides itâs fun just to try.âÂ
She sighed and tried to join in, turning a bright red. âThis is payback isnât it?â She asked him.Â
He laughed, shaking his head. âOf course not. Itâs fun, and you seem to be enjoying yourself.â
She managed to watch the other ladies nearby out of the corner of her eye, Kagome was able to follow along but caused them to be a few steps behind the others. She reached her hand out to Inuyasha like the other ladies did and when he took it, he spun her around before bringing her close to him and dipping her down. He held her there for a moment, looking into her eyes.Â
Kagome blushed, biting her lip slightly, staring into his amber eyes. âI think in the movies this is where we would kiss.â She whispered.Â
Inuyasha let out a burst of laughter and he leaned forward and placed a gentle kiss on the end of her nose, Kagomeâs heart skipped. He leaned forward again, placing his lips next to her ear. âI heard that.â
Her blush deepened and she smacked his arm. When he stood her back up, Kagome realized the song had ended and everyone was clapping. âWhy is everyone clapping? Is it over?â
He grinned at her. âYeah, we came in late. Why? Disappointed?â He lifted a brow.
âYes, actually.â She stuck her tongue out at him before turning to make her way back to the coat attendant.Â
The ride home was in silence again, Kagome still feeling a bit embarrassed about him realizing she was affected by him. I mean, what woman wouldnât be. He must be used to it.
Inuyasha walked her to her door, and after she unlocked her door she turned back to him. âUmmm.â
He stepped forward and pulled her in for a hug. âLook.â He swallowed. âI know we just met, but I had a lot of fun, even though the night started out kinda odd. I hope we can try again sometime.â
âI think Iâd like that.â She whispered.Â
He pulled back slightly from the hug to look down at her. Hesitantly he leaned forward and placed a lingering kiss to her forehead. âGoodnight Kagome.â He pulled away and turned, heading down the stairs.Â

When the World Stops Turning - Chapter 1
Summary: A love story in two voices - cowritten with @achinglyshawn
Warnings: Language
Word count: 10k
Lydia frowns in the mirror. Her hair just ainât bouncinâ and behavinâ tonight.
She lifts the curling iron again then puts it down. She picks it up again, swirling a thick red chunk around the wand and holding it for a few seconds. She lets it drop. The curl falls weak against her neck. She sighs and unplugs the iron, deciding to stop stalling and just do it.
She hasnât been looking forward to this dinner party. Her week has been long â 30 hours babysitting and a full class schedule do not make for the kind of weekend that Lydia wants to be spending out schmoozing. But itâs Allison and Kristinâs third anniversary and she missed Allisonâs birthday last month AND bailed on drinks with Kristin last week, both due to her schedule, so she really canât ditch this, as badly as she wants to.
So she shows up. Sheâs in a short midnight blue dress and heels because of course Allison and Kristin insisted on cocktail attire now that theyâve moved into their new apartment and itâs bougie as fuck. There are even place cards at the table.
She greets the hostesses and gets herself a glass of red, wandering over to her end of the table, wishing she brought a date.
The thought runs cold in her head when she sees the man sitting in the seat next to hers. At first, all she sees is bone structure, curls and broad shoulders. Her fingers tighten on her glass. And then she sees his eyes.
He feels like a proper adult, being at a dinner party in his married friendsâ brand new apartment. He brought them a bottle of champagne to christen the place with, because his mum always told him itâs the polite thing to do, bringing a gift, even if they donât ask.
He doesnât expect it all to be so formal, considering the parties he goes too are usually, like, drunken dance parties at clubs or friendsâ condos (or his own), or hotel and festival parties on tour. He doesnât ever think heâs seen his name on a place card that wasnât for an award show before.
He also hates that heâs the only single person here, apparently. He didnât think to ask about bringing someone when he first got the invite. Itâs not like he has anyone to bring. Finding a date last minute isnât exactly easy when youâre busy all day doing tour promo.
He makes his way to the dining room, and slides into his assigned seat next to his friends Margo and Chris, who are wrapped around each other because the apartment has âsuch romantic ambianceâ. Shawn wants to gag, just a little.
Heâs pouring himself a glass of white wine from the bottle he found on his way to the table, when he feels movement next to him, sees it out of the corner of his eye. He slides the bottle of wine away and sips at his glass.
He doesnât want to look over just yet, partly because Chris is saying something about the guitar heâs refurbishing for Shawn, and partly because heâs worried itâs another couple heâs gonna have to pretend heâs not agitated by.
But Margo cuts Chris off when she leans towards whoever just sat next to Shawn, her eyes bright. âLydia! Hi!â
Lydia. Not âhey you two!â Or âLydia and Steve!â Just Lydia. Shawn looks over.
Lydia manages to sit next to this tall drink of water without rolling an ankle or kicking him under the table, so she considers it a success.
She beams across the table at Margo who is practically sitting in Chrisâs lap. She hopes the look on her face is more smile than grimace.
âHi, guys,â she says brightly, wiggling her fingers in a little wave. She turns to the man sitting next to her and gets a proper look.
He really is gorgeous in an almost ethereal kind of way. His hair is dark and curly and falling over his forehead just so and she can appreciate a man who can style his hair properly. He wears a suit jacket like no one sheâs ever seen, including Paul, her incredibly well-dressed gay brother-in-law who couldâve been the sixth Queer Eye guy. She clears her throat, feeling like she recognizes him somehow. Maybe itâll come to her if she keeps staring at him like sheâs planning to do all night.
âLydia Hamilton,â she murmurs, grinning at him, offering him her hand to shake, âNice to meet you.â
Heâs not staring. Heâs not, really. Heâs looking, observing. Heâsâ fucking breathless. Really. He thinks heâs been holding his breath since he caught sight of her bright red hair. Her face doesnât help. And then she smiles and he actively has to remind himself that he needs to exhale.
He decides he loves the sound of her voice when she says hi to Chris and Margo. He was jealous of them for having each other before, but now heâs jealous of them for knowing her.
Heâs about to turn his attention back to Chris so this Lydia doesnât catch him staring, but he has a hard time looking away. He gets caught.
She turns and looks at him and just smiles brightly, the same way she did for Chris and Margo, and then she introduces herself by offering her hand. He forces himself not to be a moron.
âShawn,â he replies, curling his large palm around her small hand and shaking gently. Then, âAh, Mendes. Shawn Mendes. Nice to meet you, too.â
Heâs not used to needing to tell people his last name, but Lydia said hers and sheâs looking at him like sheâs not sure who he is. And thatâs different. Itâs a little refreshing, actually. His smile comes a little easier.
Shawn Mendes. Thatâs who he is.
When her brain pinged her that she recognized his face, her assumption wasnât celebrity. It wouldnât be, anyway, with this crowd.
But there he is. She knows his name, heâs a musician. Heâs a pop star, sheâs pretty sure. Heâs definitely a little younger than she is, but you wouldnât know it looking at him. And god, is she looking at him. She tries not to bat her eyelashes like a cougar.
Lydia laces her fingers together and looks over at Margo who is observing them with interest. She looks back at Shawn.
âSo how do you know Kristin and Allison?â
He doesnât mean to eye the full curve of her lower lip, to stare at her mouth so blatantly, to study the freckles dusting her face, but heâs already doing it by the time he realizes itâs happening. Itâs like forgetting to breathe when heâs nervous. He canât help it.
Her words snap him out of it, and he really hopes she didnât notice. He doesnât want to creep her out, like a fucking idiot, just because he wants to learn the lines of her face. Itâs a nice face. Itâs not his fault.
He forces himself to look her in the eye, but that doesnât really help with the whole remembering how to breathe thing.
âOh, yeahâ well, Kristin helped me customize my studio a couple years back. Weâve been friends ever since. What about you?â
Lydia doesnât hear any âasshole rockstarâ in the way he explains his customized studio so she lets her guard down a little further.
âOh, uhm, Allisonâs in my Ph.D. child psychology program at the university,â she explains, sipping her glass so her hands have something to do other than reaching out and grabbing his. He has such big, beautiful hands.
She hopes the Ph.D. thing doesnât make her sound like an academic asshole. She figures if she doesnât say it with her nose in the air like her mother does when she tells people about Lydiaâs career path, then sheâs usually safe.
Ph.D. Well shit. He might be a little out of his depth, talking to her. Sheâs beautiful, obviously older, and apparently super smart. What the fuck was Kristin thinking, sitting him next to her?
âSo youâre like, really smart, then?â He blurts before he can stop himself, because apparently heâs the Pinky to her Brain.
Lydia tilts her gaze down to her name card when Shawn asks if sheâs smart. He does it in that cute boyish way that surprises her because he doesnât seem entirely comfortable to be chatting with her. Itâs sweet and unexpected. She would be expecting more of an arrogant Justin Bieber vibe from him and instead sheâs getting boy next door. Itâs refreshing.
She leans in a little closer as the noise in the room picks up. Everyoneâs sitting down now and the caterers are bringing salads. Kristin and Allison really did go all out.
âIâm smart, but Iâm not a freaky brainiac,â she assures him, wanting to make him comfortable around her. Some people assume her graduate education means she has a stick up her ass, but she doesnât.
âYouâre a musician,â she says dumbly, blinking at him for a moment. She readjusts when Margo giggles into Chrisâs neck.
âI mean, Iâve heard your music. Margo, weâve heard his music, right?â She raises her eyebrows across the table at her friend who looks way too amused. And who clearly knew this guy was coming and didnât warn Lydia about sitting next to a fucking Adonis at dinner. Itâs so Margo it hurts.
His ears go pink when she figures out who he is, says sheâs heard his music. He chokes out a chuckle, looks down at his name card and moves his wine glass in a few small circles on the tablecloth as Lydia asks Margo about him.
âI mean, I get some radio play, so. Maybe you have.â
Theyâre distracted from their introductory small talk when they tune in to Margo telling a story about a time Chris drunk dialed her in college. Lydiaâs giggling and feeling the wine go to her head already. She hasnât been drinking much lately, too busy with her head in a book. Maybe she does have a stick up her ass.
She stops paying attention to him as people crowd into the room and Margo starts telling a story.
Heâs disappointed, to say the least. So he doesnât pay attention to the story, instead watches Lydia listen and focuses on the way her cheeks flush as she drinks wine and laughs. Itâs a pretty laugh. The prettiest heâs heard, probably.
He barely picks at his salad as he pretends to listen to the couple next to him, more concerned with sneaking glances at the woman next to him. He feels kind of like a creep, but heâs not exactly used to flirting with 20-something Ph.D. students with red hair that reminds him of The Little Mermaid.
He has a hard time thinking of something charming to say. Itâs easier with fans, anyway. They already love him. He doesnât have to work very hard.
As people crowd around the table, she feels squished into Shawnâs side but sheâs not complaining. Heâs warm and he smells like expensive cologne but not too much. She kind of wants to bury her face in his shoulder.
She pushes her wine glass away for a minute.
Heâs worried heâs crowding her too much, but he doesnât have much room to move, what with 18 people at dining table meant for 16.
His elbow accidentally knocks hers as sheâs pushing her wine glass away from her. It wobbles.
âOh shit-â he murmurs, reaching forward to steady the glass. He lets out a sigh, then glances at Lydia with an apologetic smile. âSorry, I justââ he laughs, âIâm worried Kristen might send me to the kidâs table if I get wine on her tablecloth.â
Lydia reaches for her tipping wine glass but Shawn grabs it and swears under his breath. She grins watching his long fingers wrap around her glass and push it to where she was going to leave it.
She busts into a girlish giggle when he cracks a joke. She worries it sounds a little overdone like sheâs trying to flirt with him. She isnât -- heâs just really fucking cute.
âGood reflexes. Did you play sports?â
He makes her laugh. He didnât even think it was that funny, but she laughs and he feels like itâs his greatest accomplishment yet.
He blushes a little and shrugs, âSome soccer, but I spent most of my time trying to get my hands on instruments. Which, you know, requires its own sort of quick reflexes, I think.â
She tries not to think too hard about him playing soccer because heâs tall and looks to be all lean muscle and she has a thing for soccer players as it is.
âWhat about you? Are you all school, all the time?â
She hums and goes to answer him when Margo pipes up.
âYes!â
Lydia looks playfully offended. âWhat are you talking about? Iâm so fun! I went to Paint Night at that bar with you guys like⌠two weeks ago!â
Margo fixes her with a look. âLyd, that was two months ago.â
Lydia sulks. âFine. I used to be fun. Iâm just busy I guess. I bet you are too.â
He figures getting a Ph.D. is like a full time job, so it makes sense that thatâs all she has time for. He feels kind of bad for asking, now, just because he didnât mean to put Lydia on the spot.
He chuckles, nodding. âYeah, Iâm pretty familiar with a full schedule. And with jerks like Margo thinking Iâm lame for it.â
He ignores Margoâs little âHey!â from beside him, preferring to keep his focus on Lydia.
He keeps cracking jokes and she keeps giggling like sheâs in high school and talking to the cute quarterback. She finds herself noticing little things he does that fascinate her and she figures itâs her psychology background picking up on his body language.
She licks her lower lip and reaches for her wine again. âSo are you working on music right now or?â
He tries not to let himself stare at her pink tongue when it darts out to wet her lip before she sips her wine. Heâs not sure heâs successful, even though heâs trying to focus on her nose instead.
For some reason her question makes him blush. Itâs not the question, really, but the person whoâs asking it. He finishes chewing a bite of salad as he nods.
âYeah, I mean I just finished my next album. So right now Iâm mostly deciding on singles and doing tour promo. Itâs the more boring part than like, actually writing music, but also a really exciting part.â
He canât help but babble. Finishing an album is the best feeling in the world.
If he wonât stop blushing, sheâs going to keep staring at him. And she doesnât mind that so much especially with the way heâs looking at her all wide-eyed and hopeful. No oneâs looked at her that way in a while.
She doesnât really know anything about music production or what he means when he says itâs boring and exciting at the same time but heâs getting animated and she likes it.
âSo does that mean youâre going on tour soon?â
âBeginning of June, yeah. I guess thatâs pretty soon,â he says with a breath. âShit, yeah, sooner than I remember.â
He likes that she seems genuinely interested, and not just interested because heâs famous. Itâs like his celebrity status isnât of much consequence to her, and he likes it. Usually the only girls who flirt with him are ones who want bragging rights or a photo op.
âBut thatâsâ I mean, letâs talk about you, instead. If thatâs okay.â
Lydia is a little thrown when he asks to talk about her. Sheâs trying to remember the last time someone, a male someone, said that to her. Sheâs drawing a blank.
The entrees arrive and Lydia is grateful for something to fiddle with as she pokes around with her fork, taking tiny ladylike bites like she learned at cotillion before her debutante ball. She remembers her posture and straightens her shoulders.
âOk. Other than Ph.D. student and favorite of Margoâs to mock, what do you want to know about me?â she hums, leaning into him a little, experimentally. She lets her arm rest against his at the tightly-packed dining table.
He feels a lump form in his chest when she leans into him, her arm sliding against the length of his as they sit almost as closely as the actual couples at this table with them.
Shawn laughs. âWell, I think Iâm actually Margoâs favorite person to mock, but we can argue about that later.â
He doesnât even pretend to pick at his entree, just watches Lydia eat instead. âAre you from Toronto?â
Itâs a boring question, but itâs better than asking, âWhat do you look like when you come?â Or âDo you like breakfast in bed?â
She feels very well attended to. Heâs not even eating heâs so interested in what sheâs saying. She loves feeling so terribly fascinating. It makes her feel sexy and sophisticated, two things sheâs not all too familiar with feeling.
She smiles warmly. âIâm from Baltimore, actually,â she tucks some hair behind her ear and shrugs, âMy parents are still there and I have a brother in Boston. Most of my family is in New England. Theyâre all very ashamed of the fact that Iâm a diehard Orioles fan.â
American. He doesnât know why, but he thinks thatâs sexy. But maybe he just thinks anything about her is sexy, because heâs pretty sure Baltimore isnât a particularly sexy place.
He laughs a little and shrugs, finally lifting his fork to stab at a piece of chicken. âWell, I know next to nothing about baseball, so Iâm okay with the Orioles thing, if that makes you feel any better.â
Lydia is feeling great. She bites her lower lip as she brings her glass back up to sip at it. She decides to turn it up a little.
âWell, good, because weâre definitely the only single people at this table, so Iâd hate to get off on the wrong foot over something like baseball.â Her voice is light and teasing and just a little sexy if she played it right.
Her voice wraps around him like silk, and he feels his heart stuttering in his chest. Everything she says sends shivers down his spine. He watches her lips press against her wine glass and he wishes they were pressing against his lips, instead.
Christ, heâs fucking pathetic. He barely knows her. Heâs sure sheâs definitely not thinking about kissing him.
âOk. Ask me something else,â she murmurs, tilting her head at him.
He has to take a sip of his own wine to wet his drying tongue.
âOkay. Why child psychology?â
He asks her her favorite question. She tries not to watch him swallow but he has a really nice neck. She sweeps a wave of curls off her own neck to show off her warm expanse of white skin above her off-the-shoulder dress.
âBecause kids are the closest thing we have to magic. So if I can help them, understand them, maybe protect them, then I find that fulfilling.â
He doesnât get what she means and he feels stupid for wanting her to explain it. But itâs also her profession of choice, so she probably doesnât mind talking about it. He just hopes he doesnât come off ignorant, or like a kid himself.
âI thought, like, chemistry or something was the closest we have to magic,â he says with a crooked smile. âAnd personally, I think itâs music.â
Shawn argues her point gently and not in that horrible mansplain-y way some guys do. He has a differing opinion and he doesnât mind sharing it. Itâs very sexy.
âMusic is great. Music is amazing. But kids are the worldâs whole future. Their imaginations are as vivid as theyâll ever be. Kids havenât had the chance to fuck up yet. They havenât hurt anyone. Kids are magic.â
She finishes the last bite of her food and tries not to look at him like heâs dessert.
He thinks, maybe, heâs in love with her. Sheâs articulate in a way he hopes to be, tries to be, but sheâs effortless with it. Plus, sheâs passionate. He still thinks music is the most magical thing they have as mere mortals, but heâs extremely close to conceding, and not just for the sake of flirting.
âWell shit,â he murmurs with a gentle laugh, then takes another sip of wine. He wets his lips after he swallows and chances a glance at her. âMaybe you have a point there.â
Sheâs looking at him already when he looks over at her. She almost gets distracted by him licking his lips. She smiles, satisfied.
âOh good, my âkids are magicâ routine has another convert,â she jokes, uncrossing and re-crossing her legs toward him. She looks around the table and sees the couples deep in conversation. Sheâs quiet for a minute, observing. She reaches up to fiddle with her necklace.
He tries to busy himself with food when thereâs a lull in the conversation, but then he feels her shift next to him, sees her angling herself more towards him and heâs done for. He reaches for wine instead.
âI canât believe Iâm at an age where Iâm getting invited to dinner parties instead of keg parties. Itâs a little disheartening, actually.â
He laughs a little when she speaks again. Something brave inside of him makes him mirror her actions, and he shifts in his seat until heâs facing her a bit more.
âI mean,â he begins as he sets his wine down, âI know about a couple of messy ragers going on tonight, if thatâs really the scene you prefer.â
Lydia grins for a second when he turns closer to her. Itâs like their unofficial, unspoken signal that theyâre not interested in the rest of the party. Theyâve found who they want to spend their evening with and theyâre going to stick together.
Lydia subtly glances down at herself as plates of tiramisu are passed around. She adjusts the dipping strap of her dress and giggles. âNot in this dress, pal.â
He loves tiramisu, and he hasnât had much of an appetite for anything else, so he decides to tackle a bit of the dessert.
Heâs chewing when Lydia reaches down to tug at her dress, and he lets himself scan her body, just for a moment.
âWhat do you mean?â He asks when he swallows, smirking a bit before continuing, âI think you look great. Iâm sure youâd be very popular.â
âGreatâ is possibly the biggest understatement of the century, but Shawnâs trying to play it cool. He doesnât need her knowing how pathetic he is by waxing poetic about the way her dress clings to her in all the right places.
Lydia lifts and lowers her shoulders, fluffing out her hair again. She eyes him.
âI happen to agree, I really like this dress, so I wonât be wearing it to a messy rager. My messy rager uniform in college was ripped skinny jeans and a ratty band t-shirt, I donât know if thatâs what the kids are wearing these days.â
She laughs it off but she feels a little weird, having said it. She doesnât really want to point out to Shawn that her rager days are largely behind her, even if sheâs the one who brought it up.
He feels his throat go tight because yeah. Tight, ripped jeans and tattered shirt probably looks really good on her. He tries not to choke on his dessert.
âIâm sure you look just as gorgeous in jeans and a shirt, so. I donât think it matters what everyone else is wearing.â
He hopes he sounded as cool and casual as he was going for, because the way his heart thumps in his chest feels anything but cool or casual.
His compliment burns in her cheeks. She swallows the last bite of her little cake and grins at him through the sugar rush. âThank you,â she hums.
Heâs definitely flirting with her and she doesnât really care, for the moment, that heâs a legitimate celebrity with millions of Instagram followers. Sheâs totally developing a little crush. Lydia hasnât had a crush in forever. Sheâs not letting go of this feeling.
âBut who needs a rager when you have tiramisu?â she almost moans through a bite of cake.
He watches her lips wrap around the tines of the fork as she eats her dessert. He almost moans, like a disgusting pervert. He takes a sip of wine to cool down.
âTiramisu and some good company,â he murmurs, glancing at her as the corner of his lips tug up into a gentle smile.
They stay at the table longer than most of the other guests, talking and drinking. He makes her laugh a few more times and he decides he never wants to stop hearing the sound.
The party starts to wrap up and sheâs sorry it does. She wants to see him again. With a little wine courage in her blood, as he helps her slide into her jacket by the front door, two of the last guests to leave, she flips her hair outside the coat and steadies her gaze on his.
âSo, Shawn, can I get your number?â
As they walk to the door, heâs trying to come up with a cool, charming way to maybe get her number when she beats him to it. He flushes, because he didnât ever think sheâd ask.
âYouâ Yeah! I mean, yeah, no problem. Can I see your phone?â
Lydia loves the little stammer in his voice when he asks for her phone. She hands it over, complete with glittery pink case and a picture of Camden Yards as her lock screen.
Lydia likes being the one to get a number rather than give hers. Sheâs in control that way. She doesnât get to be in control of much, usually, but she likes being the one someoneâs waiting on.
Not that she imagines sheâll make him wait long. At all.
He types in his number quickly, then presses the home button and notices the baseball diamond on her lock screen. He smirks as he hands the phone.
âYou really werenât kidding about the baseball thing,â he says after they wave goodbye to Kristin and Allison and disappear through the front door together.
âBut I guess thatâs how I am with hockey.â
Lydia takes the phone back and shoves it in her pocket, wishing she had something else to do with her hands. She wiggles into her leather gloves and perks up when he mentions hockey.
âHockey? I love hockey. I really like sports in general, honestly. I didnât really play them growing up but I love watching them.â
They chat a bit more until sheâs stopped in front of her old Rav-4 and shivering a little. She leans in to kiss his cheek and decides sheâs going to have to distract herself from texting him tonight.
+
Heâs been thinking about her all day. The kiss sheâd pressed to his cheek seemed to sear his skin. He catches himself brushing his fingers over the spot again and again.
Lydiaâs fidgeting on the couch, trying to study. The stereo is playing Shawnâs album like it has been on repeat all day because, ok, sheâs curious and she doesnât really know many of his songs now that sheâs had the chance to look him up.
He hates not having her number. He wants to text her so badly. She asked for his number, so the logical part of him knows she must be intending to text. He just doesnât know when. The irrational, insecure part of him thinks that maybe she was just being polite, or maybe sheâs just looking for a friend, or that she deleted his number the minute they parted ways.
Itâs been a few minutes under 24 hours since they met at the party. She had decided she was going to text him tonight anyway but hadnât set a time for herself. She grabs at her phone and curls her knees in, smiling like an idiot as she crafts a text.
âHi! Itâs Lydia. How was your day?â
His phone buzzes next to him before he gives himself too much time to spiral downwards into negativity.
âOh, hey! Actually not too busy for once, what about you?â
âPretty good, a little boring with homework all day so Iâm coming to you for entertainment. Can you make me laugh?â
âTwo cookies are in an oven. One cookie says, âBoy itâs hot in here,â so the other cookie says, âAh!! A talking cookie!!ââ
âOh my god, Iâm a little ashamed at how hard that made me laugh. Is that your go to?â
âLol, thatâs from like, middle school. Iâve been telling that for years and most people just think itâs stupid.â
âIâm glad you liked it, though.â
âI did. I think Iâm going a little stir crazy in here. The kids I babysit are on spring break and usually they take up all my energy. I kinda miss themâ
âIsnât it nice to kind of have a break though?â
'Yeah, it is. And I'll be wishing they were gone when they come back. Do you have siblings?'
âHow old are they?â
âOh and yeah, I have a little sister.â
âPain in my damn ass, but I love her.â
'Quinn is 4 and Ellie is 6. It's weird being with them sometimes. Everyone always thinks they're my kids.'
'Lucky! I always wanted a little sister. I have a big brother who's married now and I really like his husband so I sort of have 2 brothers.'
âNo way youâre old enough to have kids. I mean. Technically, sure. But you know what I mean!â
âLittle sisters are the best kind of annoying, to be honest.â
'I know! I get all these dirty looks walking around with these kids like people think I got knocked up at 18.'
'And I would trade you Nick for your sister any day. I used to actually put a little sister on my Christmas list for Santa until I was like, 10.'
âMom and dad didnât wanna indulge in that for you?â
âI guess after two kids, most moms are tapped out.â
'Actually, I was an accident :)'
âOh.â
âFuck, omgâ
âWell, I think Liyah mightâve been too, so you guys can commiserate.â
'Ha! Is she much younger than you?'
âSheâs 17. Thinks Iâm just so lame and embarrassing.â
'Well, to be fair, if she's 17 then you probably are. Plus I bet all her friends have huge crushes on you which doesn't help.'
âI mean, who wouldnât have a huge crush on me?â
âWell. Besides Liyah. Gross.â
'And so humble and charming. Makes the girls swoon.'
âEven you?â
âIâm getting there. Would you like that?â
âI meanâ
âI definitely wouldnât complainâ
âGood. Maybe if youâre around Iâll see you again soon.â
âThat seems cryptic.â
âYou sure you want to leave it up to chance?â
âIt always works in rom coms. Have you seen Serendipity?â
âIs that the one with John Cusack?â
âAlso I usually donât trust life to be much like a romcomâ
âYes it is the one with John Cusack. And I guess my experience hasnât been very rom com like either, you have a point.â
âI guess if I put it out into the universe that Iâm usually at the coffee shop on 11th Ave on Wednesdays after my 4pm lecture gets out at 6 then maybe thatâll work.â
'Hm. Yeah, that might help the universe work its shit out a bit better.'
'Have you ever tried the Himalayan place on Yonge?'
âI have not. Is it good?â
'Oh, it's the best. Staff is super nice and they have the best chocolate croissants in the world.'
âOh man youâre speaking my language. I love chocolate croissants!â
âYeah? Theyâre my favoriteâ
'I bet they're a great study food.'
âI canât say I know for sure yet. Should we find out?â
'I'd recommend it. They're great fuel for writing, so I don't see why studying would be any different.'
âHmmm. You free this Wednesday?â
'I'm always free for coffee and croissants.'
âWell, tea.â
âPerfect! Meet me there at 6:15?â
âYeah, totallyâ

Lydia has a crush. Sheâd be lying to herself if she says didnât realize it at the dinner party where she met him. Having coffee with him, however brief, solidified it.
He was taking up a good deal of her attention when she wasnât either studying or babysitting so she found she didnât have time, or want to make time, for much else. Sheâd rather be texting him anyway.
So when she got the invite from Kristin and Allison for sushi and karaoke one Saturday night, she weighed it against cuddling under a blanket with her phone talking to him about nothing and everything. She turned down the invite.
When Margo casually mentioned that he was going, Lydia changed her plans. She walked into that karaoke bar in a clingy black t-shirt dress and her favorite black leather booties.
She might take him home tonight.
He gets to the karaoke bar early because he's so nervous. He figured Lydia would be studying or babysitting this Saturday night, but he'd braved a text to her anyway, asking if she was going. Just in case.
He holds his phone with slightly shaking fingers when she texts back twenty minutes later that, yes, she'll be there. He spends the next hour debating what outfit to wear, even though Saturday is still three days away. He even texts pictures to his stylist for her opinion. She always knows how to make him look his best.
So he's sitting at their booth in the corner, right next to the karaoke stage, nervously chewing on some Edamame when he sees her walk in. He almost chokes. She's always making him almost choke. He needs to just... stop consuming things around her.
He wants to wave her over, but he also doesn't want to look desperate, so instead he pretends he doesn't see her and leans in for another soybean. It almost slips out of his fingers, but his musician's reflexes save his dignity.
Heâs fumbling with edamame when she spots him. She tries not to grin too hard at the flush in his cheeks. But heâs so fucking cute and itâs been almost a week since coffee. She find herself feeling a little flustered too, actually.
He sees her approach their group and pass out hugs from the corner of his eye, but he keeps his focus on the food and the sake martini he's nursing. God, he wishes he were cooler. He's supposed to be really cool. He's a fucking rockstar. With fans. Who throw bras at him on stage sometimes. None of that translates, though, when he's in front of her.
She strides over and hugs everyone at the table, saving him for last so she can sit with him. She leans in and whispers âhiâ into his ear, leaving a little smudge from her maroon lipstick on his cheek. She swipes it off with her thumb.
âWoops. My bad.â
Then he feels her small hand on his shoulder and her lips on his cheek and his heart stutters in his chest. She whispers in his ear and it's all he can do not to groan like a total idiot. He knows his cheeks are pink but he hopes it's too dark for her to notice.
He laughs a little when she has to wipe some lipstick from his face and finally turns to look at her. She settles next to him and he wonders if it's on purpose or out of convenience. "Hey," he says, "You made it!"
She settles in next to him and orders a cocktail because this place has a bunch of funny, crazy drinks. Hers is fluorescent blue and sporting about 30 paper umbrellas. She sips at it for courage.
The drink she orders is like, bright neon blue and he can't help but laugh at her a little while she struggles to sip around all the umbrellas. "You know, I think a sake bomb would bit lot easier to handle for the same pay off."
She angles her chin around an umbrella to reach her straw. âI know, but I hate sake and I like tiny umbrellas. So Thunderpunch is the drink for me.â She winks at him and bites her straw.
âSo, whoâs up first to sing?â She angles a glance at him.
She looks at him like she's expecting him to hop up on stage, and he rolls his eyes a bit.
"Don't look at me. Maybe I'm tired of performing, for once," he teases as he quirks an expecting brow and smirks.
The table debates who should sing first. Shawn turns it down which she thinks is cute. Sheâs not sure if heâs being humble or if heâs just not drunk enough yet. He looks at her expectantly and her eyes bug a little.
âDude, I just got here, I need, like... 3 more of these before I get on that stage.â
Finally, itâs decided Margo will kick them off because sheâs already lit and does a surprisingly good job with âCrazy in Love.â
As she sings, Lydia leans over and swipes a tuna roll off Shawnâs plate with her chopsticks. When he looks up at her, she pops it in her mouth and smirks as she chews.
Lydia gives him this teasing look that makes him feel a little like theyâre on a date, and not at a group hang. He rolls his eyes at her and pretends to protect his plate, clicking his tongue at her.
He quirks a brow, says, âThatâll cost ya, you know.â
He reaches over towards her plate with his chopsticks and steals one of her pan fried gyoza. He shoves the whole thing in his mouth then grins at her with a bulging cheek.
Shawn swipes a dumpling and she has to fight the urge to plant a kiss on his cheek as he chews. The Thunderpunch must be hitting her faster than she meant it to.
He swallows the dumpling and wipes the corner of his mouth with his napkin before turning slightly, angling himself towards Lydia. âSo, should we get you another Thunderpunch so youâll get up and put on a show for me?â
She raises her eyebrows. âA show for you? Itâs tempting, Iâll admit. But I should warn you I really canât sing. And yes, I will need another Thunderpunch before I pretend to try.â
She waves down the waiter with a big, flirty smile to get what she wants. The second Thunderpunch arrives within minutes and Chris complains that Lydiaâs orders always arrive first.
Lydia shrugs a shoulder and eyes Shawn, âItâs all in the art of the flirt, bro.â
She looks at him like they have a secret to share and Shawn feels his face heat up, just a bit. He wants to scoot closer to her, but he also doesnât want to seem weird or pushy.
He smirks at her instead, tilts his head and says, âYeah, and Iâm sure the fact that youâre beautiful doesnât hurt, either,â he glances at the waiter, âDudeâs probably hoping for a phone number.â
He doesnât mean to like, suggest she should give the waiter her number. Itâs just probably true. Like, who wouldnât want Lydiaâs number?
Shawn compliments Lydia like heâs stating a very obvious fact. I mean, she knew by the way he treats her that heâs attracted to her, but hearing him say it so simply has her a little giggly. So does the second Thunderpunch.
âHe can hope. I donât see it happening, though.â Sheâs looking over at the waiter until she finishes speaking, then she moves her glance meaningfully to Shawn. She sucks down the last of her Thunderpunch and hums happily.
He tries not to read into the look Lydia gives him when she says the waiter wonât be getting her number. He doesnât want to think on it too hard, doesnât want to let himself believe that maybe sheâs not looking to hand out her number because sheâs starting to like him the way he likes her.
He orders a beer when the waiter comes back and realizes he had a good deal of drinking to do to catch up with everyone else.
Sheâs relieved to see Shawn joining in eagerly on the heavy drinking. She canât wait to hear him sing. She wonders what song heâll pick.
But now that sheâs heavily and thoroughly Thunderpunched, her friends are looking at her expectantly and itâs time to do the damn thing.
Lydia finishes her bright blue drink and pops up like sheâs determined to kick karaokeâs ass and Shawn canât do anything but grin and watch as she makes her way to the stage. He sits back, relaxing against the back of the booth and sipping from him beer as he waits for her song.
She tries not to think about the fact that thereâs a gorgeous popstar with actual singing talent sitting at the table watching her as she ascends the stage. The opening notes to âStrongerâ by Britney Spears come on and Lydia grins, starting her performance.
âStrongerâ starts playing and thatâs so fucking awesome, Shawn has to put down his beer so he can applaud. He whistles as she takes the mic.
Itâs more of Lydia shout singing and laughing than actually trying to do Britney any justice, but Shawn loves it. He loves watching her have fun. He loves watching her smile and flush and dance around like she doesnât give a shit whoâs watching.
He really hopes sheâs starting to like him the way he so totally and completely already likes her.
Sheâs not going to be on Broadway any time soon but if itâs a show he wanted, itâs a show he got.
Sheâs still panting and giggling when she returns from the table, high fiving all her friends as they cheer her on. She saves his reaction for last.
She tilts her head at him and wiggles her eyebrows. She squishes into the booth next to him and orders another Thunderpunch from the very attentive waiter who looks annoyed at how close sheâs sitting to Shawn.
Heâs laughing and clapping when Lydia comes back to the table, high-fiving their friends along the way. She reaches him last and he feels his heart rattle his ribcage as he smiles up at her, his cheeks aching at this point.
She squeezes in next to him and itâs the alcohol coursing through his veins and the adrenaline from watching her dance around that has him casually draping his arm across the back of the booth close to her shoulders. Nearly touching. One little shift and theyâd be touching.
âOk, Mr. Mendes, were you satisfied with your show?â
He nods eagerly at her question. The bar is loud again as another person gives it a go with an *NSYNC song, so Shawn has to lean into her as he nearly shouts, âBetter than Britney, herself, Hamilton!â
She laughs heartily, buoyed by his warm arm so close to her buzzing body. She leans back a little into it.
âThatâs very generous. And total bullshit.â
She thanks the waiter when he brings her drink. She crosses her legs toward Shawn and claps for the poor sap who tried to do *NSYNC.
He grins when she calls his crap, but then he shakes his head and wets his lips. He looks at her seriously as he says, âArt is subjective, Lydia. They didnât teach you that at Brown?â
He winks at her as he sits back a little and sips his beer, realizing mid-sip that now his arm is actually resting against her back. Suddenly, he feels way too hot.
God, heâs winking and joking and teasing her and her whole body is bubbling with it. She wants to kiss him right there in front of everyone, put her hands all over his body. Sheâs definitely drunk now but sheâd still be lusting after him if she were sober, she knows.
âOk,â Lydia prompts, nudging him with her elbow, âYouâre up, cowboy.â
Heâs setting his beer down when Lydia nudges him. He shakes his head a little at first.
âIâm not much of a singer,â he says facetiously, giving her a teasing glance.
âBut, you know, if you insist,â he forces himself to stand, even though heâs drunk and definitely nervous. And not because of performing, but who heâs performing for.
âValerieâ by Amy Winehouse begins to play as Shawn takes his place at the mic. He tries not to stare at her while he sings, and instead plays to the crowd. His heart hammers the whole time.
Lydia scooches out of his way so he can take the stage. Itâs a little comical how clearly he belongs there. He doesnât have a guitar or 30,000 screaming women but he has that fucking voice that has Lydia wet in her panties. She crosses her legs tighter each time he catches her eyes while he sings, closing his eyes when he gets into it, caressing the microphone.
She has to stifle a moan. Margo elbows her in the ribs. Lydia giggles until he sits back down to thunderous applause, not just from their table, but from the whole bar.
She claps for him, smiles wide when he ambles back over to the table as the crowd cheers for him. He squishes himself beside her once more, even though thereâs another, wider spot at the other side of the table he could settle into.
âOk, you threw down the gauntlet,â Lydia laughs, shaking her head at him.
âI mean, you were taunting me,â he says with a smirk, turning towards her and not bothering to pretend heâs not leaning into her on purpose. His arm settles confidently across the back of the booth, pressing gently into her shoulders, and itâs definitely thanks to the alcohol.
Lydia licks her lips and narrows her eyes, tucking some wilting red curls behind her ear. âHoney, if you think that was taunting, wait until you get me started.â
She flutters her eyelashes at him playfully over her glass as she sucks down the last of her third Thunderpunch.
âSo are you gonna answer?â He leans in so close his nose nearly brushes her cheek. He pulls back, only slightly, so he can look her in her pretty green eyes. His stomach flips and he suddenly feels like he canât breathe. Sheâs so fucking beautiful.
Heâs talking so close to her ear, baiting her. She wants to turn and nip at his lower lip to teach him a lesson. Instead, she stares into those delightfully bleary honey brown eyes for a few seconds too long before she turns to the table.
âWho wants to see my party trick?â she calls. Chrisâs eyes widen as the rest of the table cheers.
Lydia stands, grinning again, giving Shawn one last lingering look before she heads back to the stage.
Margo nudges Shawnâs arm, shaking her head, and laughs, âYouâre gonna love this.â
The whole table cheers for Lydia, and all he can do is smile like the drunk idiot he is and stare at her as she makes her way up onto the stage. He has no fucking clue what her party trick could be.
In college, Lydia was known at parties for two things: 1. She could never remember that she hated gin until she drank it and almost spit it up 2. She could rap Eminemâs âWithout Meâ flawlessly from start to finish.
He nearly spits out his beer when she starts rapping. Sheâs not even looking at the screen. Sheâs playing to the crowd and looking at him and he feels his cheeks go fire red as he cheers her on. Sheâs doing more than justice to the song, and Shawn swears heâs never had a bigger crush on anyone in his entire life.
The liquor helped her put a flourish on it for him. She has the whole joint singing with her. She leaves the stage to raucous cheers and returns to the table. Standing in front of Shawn, she drops her nonexistent mic.
He laughs at her as she drops an imaginary mic in front of him, and itâs not even a competition anymore. He shakes his head and claps for her as she squeezes back into the seat beside him.
She felt like a rockstar coming back to the table. Is this what he feels like coming off stage every night? This is awesome.
He drapes his arm once more across the booth and her shoulders, leaning in as he shouts over the crowd, âI didnât know you were secretly a gangster!â
He must be drunker than he thought because his free hand finds her bare knee as he speaks, and he doesnât even realize it until his thumbâs already busy rubbing circles against her soft skin.
âI did it at parties in college. Made me very popular at frats,â she tells him, almost hissing when his hand meets her knee. He doesnât even seem to notice heâs done it.
Sheâs looking between the curls falling on his forehead and his slightly parted wet lips. She swallows.
âHEY!â Margo yells at them like sheâs been trying to get their attention for a minute.
Lydia looks over, annoyed. Margo smirks. âWeâre doing âIsland in the Sun.â But by all means, you two stay here.â
Margo marches off to the stage before Lydia can react. She looks back at Shawn and strokes a hand over his wrist while he continues rubbing her leg.
He hears Margo shout at him but he canât bring himself to look away from Lydiaâs flushed cheeks and full lips. Her eyes shift to their friend, but Shawn keeps watching her. He smiles a little when she gives him her attention again and places her small hand over his wrist. He presses his thumb a little harder on her skin and tugs his lower lip into his mouth with his teeth.
Lydiaâs confident smile drops a little when she watches from a close distance as he bites down on his lower lip while heâs staring at her. Like sheâs the most delicious thing heâs ever seen.
âHi,â she murmurs even though the bar has only gotten louder.
He laughs a little, but he nods his head and says hi back. He feels some of his hair fall against his forehead, that one obnoxious curl that always falls down when heâs been bopping a little too hard.
He glances down at her lips for just a moment, then finds her eyes once again. He wants to kiss her. He needs to. His throat is tight and his skin feels too hot wrapped around his muscles, but he manages to find his voice, anyway.
His brows furrow slightly, his head tilting as he asks, âCan I kiss you? Please?â
If she were sober, sheâd have noticed that she actually whimpers at the way he looks at her lips. Instinctively, she licks them, getting ready. Before he even asks his question, her free hand is creeping up his shoulder to hold her steady.
Her chest shudders. She grins, feeling confident again when his unflinching politeness strikes again. She brushes her nose over his and nods, choosing not to trust her voice for this.
Her body language almost begs him to kiss her, but he still feels a sense of relief wash over him when she nods her approval, her nose brushing against his in a way that has his heart clenching. He groans a gentle sigh and nudges his face forward.
He seems to sigh in relief when she gives him permission and it may just be the most adorable thing he does all night.
His lips slide against hers and heâs pretty sure heâs forgotten how to breathe. She tastes like soy sauce and alcohol and he has to pull his hand from her knee so he can cup her jaw, steadying himself against her.
He sips at her lips while the bar raves around them, but he canât hear it. He can only hear the way his lips move against hers and the way his heart thumps loudly against his ribcage. It makes a pretty melody, he thinks.
The kiss isnât adorable. The kiss is fucking incredible. Maybe theyâre both kinda drunk and full of karaoke adrenaline, but itâs quite a kiss. Sheâs definitely not ready for it to end when he starts to pull away.
So she doesnât. She loops a hand around his neck and drags him back under, tracing the seam of his perfect lips with her tongue because she needs more, she needs to get closer.
She pulls him back in with a small yet firm hand on the back of his neck. This time he lets himself groan properly as her tongue teases his lips. He opens his mouth for her, letâs her lick at him before he sucks gentle at her wandering tongue.
When he groans into her mouth, she scratches a manicured thumbnail gently across the back of his neck.
Sheâd be lying if she said she didnât initially have concerns that he might not be any good at this. At kissing or at anything else. Heâs young and even though heâs hot and famous, he might not have had time to get good with a womanâs body yet. And, hell, being hot and famous gives him more of an excuse not to have to try.
But Shawn has put the work in. She can tell. Heâs got a big hand in her hair and she suddenly feels very safe with him, like he wouldnât let anything happen to her.
It takes all of his willpower not to wrap her up in his arms and pull her onto his lap. He grounds himself by pushing his hand into her hair and grazing his fingers over her scalp. He hums into her mouth, leaning forward into the kiss so she has to lean back against the booth to accommodate him.
He presses into her and sheâs pinned, not aggressively, between him and the peeling fake leather booth and thereâs nowhere sheâd rather be.
He only breaks the kiss to pant for air. He keeps close to her though, keeps his hand in her hair and his nose pressed to hers as his eyes flutter open and his check heaves.
âSo are you good at everything? Or are school, rapping, and kissing your specialities?â
She almost chases him again when he parts from her to talk but she manages to keep her cool. She takes the hand still resting on his wrist to place it on his cheek. It might be too affectionate so soon but she doesnât care right now.
She stops herself from making a comment about definitely being good at everything, wink wink, if ya know what I mean. Instead she grins and brushes their noses together again.
âI also skateboard pretty well. Or I used to. I havenât tried in a bit.â
She doesnât want to get distracted by more small talk so she pulls him back in as their friendsâ song ends.
She kisses him again and he takes it easily, sighing against her lip. His head buzzes but heâs not sure itâs from the alcohol anymore. People keep singing, the bar keeps cheering, and they kiss right through it. Theyâre in the back, basically in the corner, so itâs not out in the open enough for Shawn to be worried.
Eventually Margo makes her way back to the table and Shawn can feel her squishing into the seat next to him while she hollers at them. He pulls away from Lydiaâs lips with a blush on his face and drops his forehead to her shoulder. He hides from Margo while she cackles and tells them they should get a room.
âThis is a room,â he shouts over the music from his spot on Lydiaâs shoulder.
He feels Margoâs elbow dig into his back as she huffs, âYou know what I mean!â Â All he can do is laugh and keep hiding because now he is thinking about a room, alone, with Lydia, and all the things he could do to her. Or that she could do to him. Whatever she wants, really.
Lydia definitely doesnât notice when their booth fills back up with their friends who have now caught them and fuck, theyâre never gonna live this down. Lydia jumps a little when Margo runs up and starts wailing at them about PDA. She feels his forehead meet her shoulder and she canât help but cradle the back of his head.
He stays there against her arm for a while like a shy child. Lydia plays with the collar of his shirt while half-watching another group sing We Are Family. Sheâs barely able to make it through the song without looking over and grinning at him like an idiot.
Lydia lets him keep his face pressed to the junction of her shoulder for the next few minutes while their friends chat, holler, and cheer for the group on stage. He likes it, being tangled up in her while her delicate fingers play with the collar of his shirt. His heart clenches.
Finally, the song ends and Lydia canât take it anymore. She wriggles away from him and stands, addressing the table.
âItâs been fun, guys, but itâs past my bedtime. Margo, thank you for organizing. Uhm, so, bye.â
Before he can get too comfortable, however, Lydia extracts herself from him, slipping out of the booth as she stands up. He frowns, just for the briefest of moments, as he sits himself up and looks at her while she bids the group goodbye. Itâs awkward and sudden and for a second he wonders what he did wrong.
Just to be safe, because he seems too sweet to catch her drift without her really throwing it at him, she fixes him with a look and even a little head jerk toward the door before she strides off.
But then sheâs looking at him and jerking her head a little. Itâs like, the kind of jerking nod that you give when you want someone to follow you. He kind of thinks heâs imagining it. She stalks away from them and disappears through the doors of the restaurant, leaving him to wonder if she really meant for him to follow or if heâs just desperate (re: drunk) enough to have hallucinated it.
He waits maybe 15 seconds before deciding to follow her, hallucination or not. He says a pathetically quick goodbye and practically runs out of the restaurant, scanning the sidewalk when he emerges outside.
Lydia doesnât have to wait long for him but it is one of the longest minutes of her life. Because if he didnât get it, sheâs going to have to go in after him. Because she really, really wants to take him home.
But, thank god, he scrambles out the door looking for her. Her face bursts into an overeager smile and she gives him a little wave with one hand, Lyft app open on her phone in the other.
âSubtlety is not our strong suit, Mendes,â she teases, glancing around the sidewalk. No ones around because itâs late but sheâs suspicious of camera phones anyway. She doesnât really care but she figures heâd prefer a low profile going home with someone.
Because sheâs taking him home. God, she canât wait.
The Lyft arrives. She opens the door and climbs in, leaving it open. âShall we?â

Fueled chapter 6
âYeah.â I smile softly. âIt was so good to see him. I donât realize how much I miss him untilââ a knock on the door interrupts me. I look over at Haddie, my eyes asking her who could be knocking on our door at seven oâclock on a Friday night.
âNo clue.â She shrugs, getting up to answer it since I have a slew of work papers strewn across my lap and on the couch beside me.
Moments later I hear laughter and voices and Haddie exclaiming, âWell look what the cat dragged in!â
Curious, I start to clear my papers when Haddie enters the family room, a broad smile on her face. âSomeoneâs here to see you,â she says, a knowing look in her eyes.
Before I can ask her who it is, Justin comes barreling into the room in a less than graceful stride with a laughing Beckett right behind him. Somethingâs amiss with Justin, and Iâm not sure what it is until he sees me. A goofy grin spreads across his face and it looks out of place against the intensity of his features. Luckily, Iâm shuffling up my papers because he unceremoniously plops down right beside me.
âSelena!â he exclaims enthusiastically as if he hasnât seen me in weeks. He reaches out, calloused fingers rasping against my bare skin, grabs me, and pulls me onto his lap. All I can do is laugh because I realize that Mr. Cool and Always in Control is a tad bit drunk. No, make that well on his way to being drunk. And before I can even respond to his sudden appearance, Justinâs mouth closes over mine.
I resist at first, but once his tongue delves into my mouth and I taste him, Iâm a goner. I groan in acceptance and lick my tongue against his. Itâs only been a few days but God, I missed this. Missed him. I forget that other people are in the room when Justin tangles his hand in my hair and takes possession of me, holding me so all I can do is react. All I can do is absorb the feeling of him against me. He tastes of beer and mints and everything I want. Everything I crave. Everything I need. I bow my back so my chest presses to his, my nipples tingling as they brush against the firm warmth of his chest. Justin swallows the moan heâs coaxed from me when his arousal pushes up through my thin pajama pants and rubs against me.
âShould we clear the room?â I hear Haddie say before she clears her throat loudly, shocking me back to reality.
I pull my head back slightly from Justinâs, but his hand remains fisted in my hair holding my curls hostage. He rests his forehead to mine as we both draw in ragged breaths of need.
After a beat, he throws his head back on the couch and laughs loudly, his whole body shaking from its force, before choking out, âShit, I needed that!â
I start to scramble off his lap, suddenly aware that Iâm wearing a very thin camisole tank with some very aroused nipples sans bra, and Beckettâwhom Iâve only met onceâis sitting across from me, studying us with a quiet yet amused intensity. Before I can even cross my arms over my chest, Justinâs hands grip me from behind, wrapping his arms around me and pulling me back against him.
âHey!â I shout.
âI got it!â he shouts playfully in response. âAnd Justinâs inebriated.â
What? I shift in his lap, trying to turn and look at him. âHuh?â
He chuckles and itâs such a carefree boyish laughâso at odds with the intensity he exudesâthat my heart swells at the sound. âAce,â he states confidently. âAnd Justinâs inebriated.â
He busts out laughing again, and I canât help but laugh along with him. âNope.â And before I can say anything else, Beckett jumps in.
âYouâre drunker than I thought. Inebriated starts with an âIâ, you douchebag. Spell much?â
Justin flips him the bird, his boyish laugh returning again. âWhatever, Becks. You know you love me!â he says pulling me back against him. âNow, back to business,â Justin announces loudly. âYouâre coming with us.â
Haddie raises her eyebrows, amusement on her face at my flustered expression. âJustin, let me go!â I sputter loudly in between laughs, trying to wriggle out of his iron tight grip on me. He simply holds me tighter, resting his chin on my shoulder.
âNope! Not until you agree that youâre going with us. You and Haddie are going on a little road trip with Becks and me.â I start to wiggle again, and I feel Justinâs free hand slip up to cup my breast through my shirt, his thumb brushing over my nipple. I suck in a breath at his touch and embarrassment floods my cheeks.
âUh-uh-uh,â he teases, his breath feathering over my cheek. âEvery time you fight me, baby, Iâm gonna cop a feel.â He nips at the skin between my shoulder and my neck, his arousal thickening beneath my lap. âSo please, Selena,â he begs, âplease, fight me.â
I roll my eyes despite the shock wave of need thatâs reverberating through me at the sound of his bedroom voice, and I canât help the laughter that bubbles out, Haddie and Beckett joining in. Drunken Justin equals a very playful Justin. I like this side of him.
âTypical male,â I tease. âAlways misguided and thinking with the head in your pants.â
He pulls me tighter against him, one arm around my shoulders while the other is around my waist. âWell then, donât be afraid to blow my mind,â he murmurs, a low, seductive growl in my ear that has me laughing from the corniness of the line all the while tensing at the suggestion of it.
âSo get your asses up, pretty ladies, and get ready!â he suddenly orders, breaking our connection, pushing me to my feet, and swatting my backside.
âWhat are you talking about?â I ask at the same time Haddie pipes up asking, âWhere are we going?â
Beckett laughs out loud at Haddieâs all-in reaction before bringing a bottle of beer to his lips. âHey!â Justin shouts. âDonât be drinking my beer you bastard or Iâll take you down.â
âChill out, Wood.â He chuckles. âYou left yours on the table by the front door.â
âShit!â he grumbles. âIâm a man in need of a beer and of women to get their asses moving. Timeâs a wasting!â
âWhat in the hell are you talking about?â I turn to him, arms across my chest.
A slow, roguish grin spreads across his lips as he stares at me. âVegas, baby!â
Mysterious text solved.
âWhat?â Haddie and I shout, but both with different meanings. There is no possible way I am going to Las Vegas right now. What in the hell?
Justin holds up his phone, biting his lip as he tries to concentrate on its screen, and I realize heâs trying to tell the time with his alcohol-warped mind. âWeâll be back in the morning, but wheels up in one hour, Selena, so you better get that fine ass of yours moving!â
What? Weâre flying? What am I even thinking? Iâm not going anywhere. âJustin, you canât possibly be serious!â
He pushes himself up from the couch, and looks a little wobbly before getting control. He looks down at me, an errant lock of hair falling over his forehead with his shirt untucked on the right side. âDo I need to pick you up over my shoulder and haul you to your bedroom to show you just how serious I am, sweetheart?â
I look over at Beckett for some kind of help. He just shrugs his shoulders, silently laughing at our banter. âIâd just give in, Selena,â he drawls, winking at me. âHe doesnât give up when heâs in this mood. I suggest you go get changed.â
I open my mouth to speak but nothing comes out. I look over at Haddie who has excitement dancing in her eyes. âCâmon, Selena,â she prompts. âIt couldnât hurt to escape with everything thatâs going on tomorrow.â She shrugs. âHave some fun and forget a little.â I nod at her and her smile widens. She whoops loudly. âWeâre going to Vegas, baby!â
Beckett stands from the chair asking for the bathroom. Haddie offers to show him on the way to her room to get ready. I turn to face Justin but am caught off guard as he swoops me up and over his shoulder, swatting my butt as he carries me rather unsteadily toward the hallway.
âJustin, stop!â I shriek, smacking his ass in turn.
His only response is a laugh. âWhich room is yours?â I squeal as he tickles my feet. âTell me, woman, or Iâll be forced to torture you some more!â
Oh, I definitely like drunk and playful Justin!
âLast door on the right,â I screech as he tickles me some more before throwing me unceremoniously onto my bed. Iâm out of breath from laughing, and before I can even speak, Justinâs body is flanking mine. The feeling of his weight on me, pressing intimately against me, creates a crack in my resolve. So much for being aloof. That card was thrown out the window the minute he wobbled into the family room with that playful and captivating grin on his face.
His mouth slants over mine and his tongue plunges into my mouth. I slide my hands up and under the hem of his shirt and run them up the planes of his back. The kiss is full of greed, angst, and passion, and I know Iâm losing myself in it. To him. His hands roam, touching every inch of my bare skin he can find as if he needs this connection to tell him everything is alright between us. That our union is reassuring him, confirming that whateverâs between us is still there.
I freeze when I hear a knock on the doorjamb. âCâmon, loverboy.â Beckett chuckles uncomfortably. âRein it in. You can do that later. Right now weâve got a plane to catch.â
Justin rolls off of me, groaning as he adjusts his arousal in his jeans. âYouâre such a buzz kill, Becks!â
âThatâs why you love me, brother!â He laughs as he retreats down the hall, giving me some privacy to get ready.
Justin props his hands behind his head and crosses his feet at the ankles as I scoot off of the bed. âGod, you look sexy right now,â Justin murmurs, his eyes focused on my nipples pressing against the thin cotton of my tank.
âSheâll look sexier in about twenty minutes, Donavan, if you get the hell out of here and let her do her thing,â Haddie says unabashedly as she breezes in my room holding a handful of barely-there dresses on hangers for me to try on.
âWell shit,â Justin says, pushing himself up off of the mattress, âI guess Iâve been told. Beckett?â he bellows down the hall, âTime for another beer.â
I twirl a lock of Justinâs hair absently with my fingers as I stare down at his head resting in my lap. Heâs just fallen asleep and I shake my head watching the peaceful calm on his face. Iâm still in shock at the direction the evening has taken. I smile, recalling the look on Justinâs face when Haddie and I walked into the living room in our sexy Vegas outfits. The bottle of beer that was angling towards his lips stopped in mid-air when he saw me. His eyes ran the length of my body in a lazy perusal, a diminutive smile ghosting his lips before they met mine. What his eyes told me in that one look was everything that Iâd needed to hear from him but hadnât heard over the past couple of days.
Desire. Need. Want.
And then unbeknownst to me, when Justin had mentioned flying, little did I know that there was a chartered jet waiting for us when we arrived via limo at the Santa Monica Municipal Airport. Haddie and I just looked at each other and shook our heads at the lavishness of it all. And when we boarded, in addition to Sammy sitting quietly at the rear of the plane, there was a flight attendant willing to fill any drink or meal order we desired. While Haddie, Becks, and I took advantage of the offer for a drink, Justin declined everything and crawled up on the couch beside me, laid his head in my lap, and declared he needed a quick nap to be ready for the night to come.
I shake my head thinking of it all, a wisp of a smile on my face when I look up to see Haddie and Beckett in a hushed conversation across from me. Haddieâs heels are off and her feet are curled underneath her. Beckettâs long legs are stretched out in front of him, and his fingers absently draw lines on the condensation of his bottle. Heâs quite handsome in a non-typical way. I stare at him, realizing that he has definite sex appeal, more than looks. His sandy blonde hair is cropped close to his head and spiked up with gel. His crystal clear blue eyes are fringed by thick lashes. They are quiet eyes that take in and observe in a reserved fashion. He has broad shoulders and a lean build like Justin.
I stare at him, the best friend of my lover, and there is so much I want to ask him about Justin. So many things I think he can shed light on but know he would never betray his buddy by telling me.
Whether by chance or because he feels the weight of my stare, Beckett looks up and meets my eyes, his sentence to Haddie faltering on his lips. He angles his head to the side and twists his lips up as if heâs trying to decide if he should say something or not.
âYou know why weâre here right nowâŚwhy Wood got drunk tonight, donât you?â His southern accent drawls out as he looks down and shakes his head at the sight of his friend before looking back up me.
âNo,â I say.
Beckett leans forward resting his elbows on his knees and looks me straight in the eye. âBecause you told him no, Selena.â He shakes his head, a smile growing on his face. âAnd nobody, except me, ever tells him no.â
âThatâs absurd,â I tell him, looking over at Haddie, whoâs arched her eyebrow at the turn in conversation, a pleased smirk on her lips. I realize that Beckett is telling me I am the first female to tell Justin no. To not ask how high when he says jump. I glance down at Justin and back up to Beckett. âSurely one of his many others have told him no before.â
He thinks in silence for a moment before answering. âNot that I know of,â Beckett says, tipping the bottle to his lips, âand if they have, Iâve never seen Justin care like this.â He leans back and stretches out again, and I try to read the unspoken words in his eyes. âHe came back from lunch one surly S. O. B., Selena. I actually felt bad for the people on the other end of our meeting today.â He smiles at the thought. âAnd then the next thing I know, he was pounding out his frustration on the treadmill. Pulling me to the bar with him to sulk and started making phone calls. Hatching a plan. Telling people weâll be in Vegas by ten, to get their asses there, and to meet him at the usual place.â
The usual place? âYou guys do this often?â
âEvery couple of months.â He shrugs like itâs not a big deal. âBut hereâs the thing, Selena, no matter who heâs with, Iâve neverâneverâseen him bring the woman heâs seeing, or whatever the hell heâs doing with them, along with us.â He tips the bottle of the beer at me. âNow thatâs something to think about.â
Beckett eyes hold mine until he knows I understand. Thereâs something different between Justin and me that he hasnât seen before. I nod my head at him.
He leans forward again. âIâve known Justin for a long time, Selena. He can be cocky as hell and a stubborn ass at times, but heâs a good guy. A really good guy.â I can sense the sincerity in his voice and the brotherly love he has for Justin. He looks down at his slumbering friend and back at me. âHe may not always go about things the right way, or even know how to go about them at all, but he usually has the best intentions behind his actions.â When I donât say anything he just nods and continues. âIâm telling you this because you matter to him. More than heâs willing to admit or can acknowledge right now, but itâs important for you to know. Because if he matters to you like I think he doesâŚreally mattersâŚnot just for the recognition of being with him, but because of who he is, then you need to hear it. Shit,â he swears, running a hand over his jaw and leaning back shaking his head. âI must be drunk if I just told you that. Fuck.â He sighs. âHeâd throttle me right now if he knew I was telling you any of this.â
âThank you,â I tell him, my voice barely a whisper as I try to digest everything heâs just told meâeverything I wanted to ask him but was afraid to. My head is reeling with his confession. I try to keep a rein on the hope and possibilities that bubble up inside of me. I matter enough that his best friend notices the difference in him. I just need to remember that unless Justin acknowledges it, these feelings still mean nothing.
Haddie looks over at me and smiles softly, knowing how much I needed to hear this. That these words justify the depths of emotion I already feel for Justin.
He thanks the flight attendant as she hands him another beer. âIâve said this much, I might as well finish,â he mutters to himself with a sheepish smile spreading on his lips. Justin shifts and turns into me, his face nuzzling my abdomen, and all I want to do is bend down and kiss him. âTrying to control Justin is like trying to grab the wind. Donât even bother...â he shakes his head â...heâs gonna fuck up, Selena. Heâs going to make a lot of mistakes and say all of the wrong things because he doesnât know how to do anything other than what heâs been doing.â
Beckett takes a pull on his beer and sighs. âHeâll never admit it Selena. And unless you are one of the few that are close enough to him to see it, youâd never guess that heâs a man drowning in his past. To accept that there might be more than just the usual arrangement per se with youâand by you being here, there obviously isâhe might just pull you down so that youâre drowning with him.â He shifts some in his seat, eyes never breaking from mine. âWhen that happens, Selena, more than anything heâs going to need you to be his lifeline. Heâs going to be so consumed and obsessed with preventing his past from meeting his future that heâs going to need everything from you to keep him afloat.â
He holds my eyes for a minute longer and then eases back into his seat, a slight smile playing the corners of his mouth. âI love him to death, Selena, but some days I hate him too.â He shrugs without apology, âThatâs just Justin.â
I look back up at Beckett and smile softly, a silent agreement to his assessment. âIâm beginning to understand that,â I mutter.
The flight attendant comes over to fill our drinks one last time and to inform us that we will be beginning our descent into Las Vegas shortly. I look down at Justin and a feeling of warmth spreads throughout me as I realize how much Iâve come to care for and loveâyes loveâhim. I shake my head and Haddie catches my eye, her happiness for me brimming in hers.
Itâs been several years since Iâve been to Las Vegas, and I canât believe how much the city of sin has changed in that time. New hotels have sprouted up while old ones have been torn down. Aging ones have been renovated and made over to match the caliber of the new ones.
Iâm dying to get a moment alone with Haddie. We havenât really had one since this whole adventure started, and I need her advice on how I should act in light of Beckettâs revelations. We had a quick moment alone in the airplane while we were freshening up, but not nearly long enough to have a real discussion about the nightâs events.
Lights and sounds surround us, assaulting our senses as we exit the limo. Sammy nods discretely to Justin and takes the lead as we walk up a set of stairs into an entrance at the Venetian. Within moments we are walking into TAO. Justinâs hand is on the small of my back, and I notice conveniently that Beckettâs hand is doing the same on Haddieâs. I wonder if heâs just being a gentleman or if thereâs something else possibly going on. Interesting.
I realize that people are starting to stare at us as Justinâs name is hurriedly murmured around the Friday night crowd whoâve gathered in hopes of seeing a celebrity. Camera phones flash and I look up at Justin to see his reaction. Heâs all smiles with the crowd, but when he looks over at me, his eyes warm up with whatâs missing from his public one. His nap has sobered him up some, but I can still sense that playful Justin is just within reach.
We skirt around the long line of people waiting for the chance to enter. As we near the hostess podium, a woman steps out from behind it and motions for us to follow her. Wow, life must be nice when youâre Justin Donavan. No lines and women at your fingertips.
Justin leads me by the hand as we walk past the giant Buddha on the way to our private table. Heads turn and flashes explode against the darkened atmosphere of the room as we pass through. I hear Justinâs name murmured a couple more times within the crowd before he stops and turns to face me.
I look at him, a puzzled expression on my face as he steps toward me and unexpectedly captures my mouth with his. At first I freezeâI mean we are in the middle of a very swanky and completely packed restaurantâbut as Justin deepens the kiss, as his fingertips cup my face and hold my head still, I succumb to him. His taste is just too devouring and his pull on me too magnetic to resist.
The sounds of the restaurantâs patrons fade away. Justin kisses me like a man drawing his last breath and I am his air. Itâs passionate and possessive and provocative. And holy fuck his addictive taste drags me under and takes hold. My mind starts to come back to reality when the whistles and hollers of onlookers begin to register in my brain.
The crowd around us gets louder as they urge on our public display. Justin keeps his hands cupping my face but tears his lips from mine. His eyes register unfiltered lust, but the grin he flashes me is arrogant and mischievous. The only thought in my head is wow, but heâs left me so breathless that forming that simple word isnât even a possibility. I give him a questioning look.
He just cocks his head to the side, a gleam lighting up his emerald eyes. âIf theyâre gonna stare, Selena, we might as well put on a good show!â He wags his eyebrows at me and brushes a chaste kiss on my lips before grabbing my hand and following the hostess standing off to the left of us. The dumbfounded look on her face reflects exactly how I feel.
Playful Justin has reappeared.
Cheers follow us out of the main room into our private dining area, and it is only then that I can read the stunned thoughts dancing across Haddieâs expression. I shrug at her and she just grins back at me, eyes wide and dimples deep.
We reach our table and Justin pulls me into his arms before I have a chance to sit in the chair heâs pulled out for me. âI havenât told you yet how absolutely stunning you look tonight.â He breathes into my ear. âAnd now every guy in this restaurant knows youâre mine,â he says in case the claim heâd just staked wasnât clear enough. He presses his lips at the spot just below my ear. âYou look sexy as hell in that dress, but I must confess that all I can think about is getting you out of it.â He chucklesâa seductive sound that wraps its way inside my body and causes the fingers of desire to tickle in my lower belly. âThank you for coming tonight, Selena.â
Dinner is delicious and seems uneventful compared to the whirlwind of the past couple of hours. The conversation among the four of us flows easily, and I can see why Justin likes Beckett. Heâs funny and witty and really grounded, having no trouble putting Justin in his place when he needs to be. They banter back and forth like little old women, but their affection for one another is obvious.
Sammy sits at a table near us with eyes wary at all times. Heâs prevented our meal from being interrupted a couple of times from eager ladies wanting pictures with Justin, if not something more.
I catch myself staring at him randomly during dinner. His charisma and enthusiasm are infectious, and I love watching how his face lights up when telling a story or relaying an event. Heâs polite and attentive to everyone during the meal, making sure that all of our needs are met. He steals little kisses here and there coupled with the squeeze of my hand or the trace of a fingertip on my bare shoulder. I wonder if he has any clue the fire he is stoking within me with his casual affection.
I sip the last of my Tom Collins and realize I have a slight buzz going when Justinâs phone alerts an incoming text. He looks down and laughs at the message. âGotta hot date, Ace?â I tease him with a smirk on my face. He looks up from his phone to meet my eyes at the same time Haddie snorts at my nickname. He just raises an eyebrow and flashes that mischievous grin I adore. In the midst of staring at me, I see the moment his brain registers why Haddieâs laughing.
âYou,â he says across the table pointing at Haddie.
âMe?â she says coyly as she takes a sip through her straw.
âYou know what A.C.E. stands for,â he says with excitement, and I can see the cogs turn in his head as he figures out how to play this.
âNow why would you think that?â Haddie flutters her eyelashes with feigned innocence.
âSpill it, Montgomery,â Justin demands playfully. Haddieâs eyes dart over to me and her smile widens, but she says nothing. âWhat can I bribe you with?â
âWell,â Haddie replies in her best bedroom voice. âThereâs definitely a lot of things you could do to me to make me talk.â She breathes out, licking her bottom lip and pausing. âYou know Selena and I like to play a little on our own together,â she says suggestively, eyeing him up and down. The look on Justinâs face is utter shock and, being the guy that he is, unfiltered lust. Itâs taking everything I have to not burst out laughing. âIf you want me to talk, you could always join us,â she suggests, âand play a littleâŚâ
He works a swallow down his throat, his eyes darting back and forth between us before a lascivious smirk turns up that skillful mouth of his. âVery convincing, HaddieâŚAnd as much as my dickâs enjoying the thought, Iâm not taking the bait, sweetheart,â he replies while Beckett barks out a laugh.
âDamn, Haddie.â Becks shakes his head. âYou had me going for a minute there!â
We all laugh as Haddie throws her napkin at him and turns to me with a smile on her face. âHeâll never get it.â
âAttractive, charming, and exquisite,â Justin guesses and then blows on his knuckles and rubs them against his chest.
âNope.â I smirk at him as I play with the straw in my drink.
âMore like all consuming ego,â Beckett mocks.
âNope,â I repeat, my standard response.
âSaved by the bell!â Justin says as the waiter places dessert plates filled with chocolate confections in front of us.
We enjoy our dessert, the playful banter continuing, but no matter where my eyes wander, they always come back to Justin. He looks up as Iâm admiring his devilishly handsome face and smiles softly at me.
âYou ready?â
I return his smile and nod.
âHaddie? Becks? You game?â They both agree and gather their things. I start to stand up and find myself tugged backwards so I land on Justinâs lap. I catch a glimpse of his wicked grin before his lips close over mine. His tongue slips between my lips and teases mine with tantalizing slow licks and sweeps into my mouth. He tastes of mint and rum, and all I can think of is how these little kisses here and there are not enough to last me all evening. They are a cruel tease when Iâve already had the real thing and know itâs mind-blowingly better. His hand slides slowly up the outside of my thigh, fingertips gliding underneath the hem of my dress, kneading my soft skin with his roughened fingers.
Teasing me.
Before I can even process a coherent thought, he pulls back and kisses me on the tip of my nose. I release a frustrated sigh, needing so much more to soothe the ache heâs seated in me.
He chuckles softly at my response. âLetâs go,â he says, nodding his head toward the door.
Weâve spent the last hour and a half occupying the casino floor with a flamboyant flair. Much to Sammyâs dismay, Justin decided that he wanted to play some Craps. After some initial losing, Justin ended up at a table surrounded by a crowd as he rolled again and again to their cheers of encouragement and the benefit of his wallet.
His adrenaline is still amped up, and I can feel it vibrating off of him as our car pulls along a back entrance of the Palms Casino a little after midnight. Weâve all had a lot to drink and Iâm more than ready to release some energy on the dance floor.
âNow the fun really begins, ladies!â he exclaims before tipping back the rest of his drink and grabbing my hand.
We exit the car and are whisked via a side door through the hotel and into a back entrance to the nightclub, Rain. The energetic beat of the song Animal fills the club and reverberates through my body. An employee leads us up a stairway and moves a velvet rope with a sign that notes reserved so we can pass into the VIP area.
Such an odd feeling to be treated as the only patrons in a club filled with hundreds of other people just feet away.
Weâre led onto the mezzanine level, and when we enter, a roar of cheers startles me. Justin doesnât seem surprised, and I realize that the thirty plus people in front of me are who Justinâs been coordinating all night long. He is suddenly pulled into the crowd of people, collecting pats on the back from the guys and overly long hugs from the women.

Hii!!! I saw your other reaction and since you responded really really well I'd like to request another? Could you do a BTS' reaction to you becoming a trainee at bighit and they see you whilst your either rapping/dancing/singing? Thank you so so so much â¤ď¸
Hello there anon, no problem! Weâre glad you liked it. Heres your reaction:
Kim Seokjin (Jin)
Jin would be on his way to practice in the recording booth when he walked past an open door. From the door a sugary sweet voice was flowing and Jin had to stop in his tracks. He would contemplate on whether he should keep going âcause he really needed to practice but at the same time, your voice was just so beautiful. He had to find the source, so he decides to look into the room. Youâre sitting cross legged on the floor staring down at your phone while youâre singing. Youâre on of the new trainees, he recognizes you from having walked past you and your group practicing dance. Heâd be transfixed by how you seemed to not notice anything around you as you were completely gone in the song.
He didnât realize how long he had been staring till you finished and looked up letting out a small scream, when you noticed he was standing in the door.
âheyâ heâd giggle nervously âI didnât mean to interrupt, but your voice is very beautiful, compared to you I sound like a dying whale ahahaâ
Min Yoongi (Suga)
Yoongi had just finished up at the studio and was about to leave when he heard some music from one of the recordings so he went there to see whoâd still be up at this time. He goes into the room and sees perhaps the cutest girl hed ever laid his eyes on, dressed in a pink dress and her hair flowing in soft waves over her shoulder -and then sheâd start singing, or thatâs what he thought she was about to do. Instead she raps. Not even, she spits f**king fire. He doesnât recognize the song so it must be her own but he has to admit. Itâs good, and so is she. When youâre finished you notice Yoongi staring, with his mouth hanging open and in a weird position as if he had stopped in the middle of a movement. You smirk at him and let out a giggle at how he scrambles to put himself back together and run out the recording studio.
âHow the f**k can someone be so cute and so badass at the same timeâ he mumbles and doesnât stop running until heâs out of the building. He stops to catch his breath when his feet hit the pavement âholy sh*t, I think Iâm in loveâ
Jung Hoseok (Jhope)
Hoseok wanted to squeeze in some extra practice for the comeback so he went to the dance studio only to realize it was taken. He looked in thinking it might be Jimin or Jungkook, only to find one of the newer trainees. You would look breathtaking with flushed cheeks and your neck glistening with sweat while moving your body as if the wind carried you, as if you were floating on the ocean waves. Hoseok would try to distract himself from wanting to lick a drop of sweat that was trickling down your temple by letting out a loud squeal of excitement. Heâd start praising your dance entering the studio and ask questions like âhow long have you been dancing?â but would stop when he noticed you were lying on the floor.
His squeal scared the shit out of you and you lost your balance and fell to the floor. When he noticed you had fallen and was clutching your ankle heâd insist on taking you to the hospital #extrajhope and when you tried to refuse #jnope.
âitâs my fault you fell, we canât have you ruin your career because of me now can we?â heâd say and wink at you.
Kim Namjoon (Rap monster)
Namjoon liked music, he made music it was his life. In this life of music he had heard quite a lot of beautiful voices but nothing compared to what he was listening too right now. You were singing btsâs Butterfly and Namjoon has never found himself frozen in place like this. Your voice is freaking ethereal. Heâd immediately grab his phone and record you singing. When you were finished heâd have an entire speech ready but the second you turned to look at him heâd choke on his words and smile sheepishly.
Heâs ears would flame red as heâd stumble over himself âuh, hey, do you wanna be on my next mixtapeâ - that was not how he planned to say it but when you smiled and told him that yes, youâd love too âuh, great, I guess? Yeah, great, see you laterâ
Park Jimin (Jimin)
Jimin strutted into the dance studio as if he owned the place but stumbled over himself landing face first on the floor right in front of your feet when he saw you dancing and singing. Heâd scramble to his feet and motion for you to keep going while putting his things down by the mirror wall. Youâd restart dancing after some time, staring at his back. Heâd be blushing furiously and trying to hide his embarrassment by snuggling into his hoodie.
He wouldnât want you to think badly of him though, so soon heâd join by your side, already knowing the steps and gracefully joining in on the dance. Youâd smile shyly when the dance was finished and turn to him asking if he was okay.
âI have no idea what youâre talking aboutâ heâd panic âIâm perfectly fine, are you?â
Kim Taehyung (V)
You weâre practicing your performances for the mama awards - you and your group would be having a special stage with Bts and you were all super excited. As you were having a break Taehyung would put on Cypher 4 and jam on. You didnât react at first but at the third chorus your friends would be cheering you on to rap Yoongis part because they knew you could at heart. You were shy at first but when the part started youâd immediately go along with it following nicely and even Yoongi would stare at you in amazement. Taehyungâs was the most obvious one though. Heâd start clapping and joining in at the parts he knew. He was hyping you with yells and cheers. When the song finished he clapped like a madman and gave you huge teddy bear hug, you almost felt like melting.
âSheâs my soulmateâ heâd say and nudge Yoongi whoâd just grunt and keep scrolling through his phone âshes amazingâ
Jeon Jungkook (Jungkook)
Jungkook would hear a soft voice singing as he walked down the hallway and would immediately recognize the song as Justin Bieber-sunbaenims ânothing like usâ. Heâd almost squeal from pure happiness of someone singing it. Heâd rush into the room singing right along with you. Youâd startle at first but then you kept going smiling kindly at the boy. You would finish the song âthereâs nothing like you and me, togetherâ while looking into eachothers eyes and only then Jungkook would realize he had just been singing a love duet with what must have been the prettiest girl he had ever met.
âI-I-Iâm so sorry, I-I guess I got k-kinda intrigued I didnât really thinkâŚâ heâd trail of scratching his neck while blushing furiously. âitâs fine, we should do that again some timeâ you said and heâd show his adorable bunny smile and leave with a cute wave.
