This is my MDF Procardial Titanium scope similar to this one, hanging out with drag queen Alaska Thunderfuck 5000's memoir, My Name's Yours, What's Alaska. This was just a really fun read, though I wouldn't recommend it to someone who isn't already an Alaska fan. It's 100% Alaska and I could hear her voice reading it to me even though I wasn't reading the audio version. The heavy volume has an extensive color gallery and anecdotes from her childhood in Erie, PA, during which she (of course) preferred Barbie to GI Joe and tried on her mother's clothes. It follows her through college in Pittsburgh and eventually LA to follow her dream of being a full-time performer while figuring out who Alaska is and what she represents. Infamously, she becomes involved with fellow alternative Pittsburgh queen Sharon Needles. By the time Alaska meets Sharon, she has been banned from all but one of the local gay bars for provocative and downright offensive behavior. One of the most interesting things to me about Alaska is her determination to choose kindness again and again. Though she refuses to vilify the incredibly problematic Sharon, it's clear how toxic their relationship was and a relief for the reader to see the romance end. The book is short but provides a nice snapshot of urban queer culture in America during the aughts.
