DEADLINE: What’s the larger significance of Sunja coming to her own capabilities with her kimchi cart? E.P. THERESA KANG-LOWE: It’s a cultural touchpoint for her that if she wasn’t Korean, she wouldn’t be able to do that. We all have that in our different cultures but that then becomes a way for her to provide for her family and her source of power. The ending of that definitely I attribute to her being Korean and having the means to provide for her family, but ultimately, it’s about that hopefulness that this family will endure and survive. Kimchi for Asian Americans, Korean Americans is a source of pride. I think it’s so amazing to have kimchi, which is such an iconic Korean part of the cuisine, be the very thing that ultimately allows Sunja to provide for her family, and I think every family in every culture has that.

Good news! The Card Counter has been sold to Focus Features (same distributor that is handling Oscar’s other film, Armageddon Time):
Focus Features strikes again.
The indie film company continued a torrid acquisitions streak, nabbing rights to Paul Schrader’s revenge thriller “The Card Counter,” one of the hottest titles available at this year’s Cannes Film Festival virtual market. “The Card Counter” is Schrader’s follow-up to his Oscar-nominated “First Reformed.” The cast includes Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan and Willem Dafoe.
It’s the latest splashy buy for Focus, which also recently nabbed James Gray’s “Armageddon Time” and Justin Chon’s “Blue Bayou” out of this new, coronavirus-mandated virtual Cannes.
“The folks at Focus are the best at what they do,” Schrader said in a statement. “Over the years I’ve been jealous of directors in the Focus fold. Now happily I am one.”
“The Card Counter” focuses on Tell (Isaac), a gambler, whose spartan lifestyle moving from one casino to the next is shattered when he is approached by Cirk (Sheridan), a vulnerable and angry young man seeking help to exact revenge on a military colonel (Dafoe). For Tell, helping Cirk may be a chance at redemption (a core theme in many of Schrader’s works), but the decision has unforeseen consequences.
Schrader, whose writing credits also include such iconic features as “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull,” wrote and directed “The Card Counter.” Martin Scorsese, who directed “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull,” as well as the Schrader-scripted “The Last Temptation of Christ” and “Bringing Out the Dead,” will executive produce the film.
Focus Features will distribute the film in the U.S. and Universal Pictures International will distribute internationally in the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, ANZ, China, SE Asia (excluding Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and television), Japan, South Korea, Latin America and on various airlines.
Braxton Pope, Lauren Mann, and David Wulf produced the film. Other executive producers include William Olsson, Lee Broda, Joel Michaely, Ruben Islas and Stanley Preschutti.
“At a time when many of us are left wondering whether it’s our circumstances that corrupt souls or if it’s corrupt souls that create the circumstances, no one can say for sure, but has anyone explored this more in film than Paul Schrader?” said Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski in a statement. “All of us at Focus can’t wait to hear and see what Paul has to say now more than ever before, and we’re very proud to help him bring this story to the world.”
HanWay films represented the international sale of the film. Schrader’s rep, David Gonzales, and Endeavor Content handled the U.S. sale
Isaac is represented by WME and Inspire Entertainment, Haddish by Artists First and UTA, Sheridan by Mosaic and WME, and Dafoe by CAA and Circle of Confusion. Schrader is represented by David Gonzales. Both Sheridan and Isaac are also represented by attorney Mitch Smelkinson. The production is represented by attorney Joseph Lanius.

Each month the Communications Team spotlights a few boards on Fan Forum, and this month we are featuring the Twilight Saga Board! The Twilight Saga board opened on January 31st, 2008 and had had moments when they thought they might even close. But through dedication from twi-hards (hardcore Twilight fans), the board has been thriving for 11 years. ~AnastasiaGrey~ (Tiana) and x♥xBeautiful_Butterflyx♥x (Christina) are the current moderators of the board and continue keep up to date with news and events of the stars of the series. The initial interest in Twilight began with the book series by Stephenie Meyer, the first of which was Twilight, released in 2005. Followed by New Moon in 2006, Eclipse in 2007 and the final chapter, Breaking Dawn in 2008. The first film of the franchise, Twilight, was released in 2008 and each year following, the next book was released in film format, while the final book was turned into two films instead of one. [New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn Part 1, Breaking Dawn Part 2] It became a whirlwind of a phenomenon, skyrocketing its leading stars into popularity, seemingly overnight. The titular characters of the series, Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart, Edward Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson and Jacob Black, played by Taylor Lautner, could not escape notice in public for something as simple as going to dinner. The story revolves around human, Isabella Marie Swan as she moves back to Forks, Washington to live with her father, Charlie Swan, so her mother, Renée, can travel with her minor league baseball player husband. She makes new friends at the local high school in Jessica Stanley, played by Anna Kendrick, Mike Newton, played by Michael Welch, Angela Webber, played by Christian Serratos, and Eric, played by Justin Chon. But her attention is drawn to the 'adopted' children of Dr. Carlisle and Esme Cullen, played by Peter Facinelli and Elizabeth Reaser. The Cullen coven, as they are referred to, are vampires and consists of Emmett, played by Kellan Lutz, Rosalie, played by Nikki Reed, Alice, played by Ashley Green, Jasper, played by Jackson Rathbone, and Edward, who tries to stay away from Bella. The iconic line in the film, "You're like a drug to me, my own personal brand of heroin," refers to the scent of Bella's blood and how he is drawn to it. In the first Twilight film, Edward and Bella cultivate a relationship while Bella discovers not only that Edward and his family are vampires, but that other vampires traverse the area and cause problems, putting Bella's life in peril. New Moon begins with what seemingly looks like a simple birthday party for Bella but Edward cannot handle how his brother, Jasper almost attacks Bella when blood is drawn due to a paper cut. Feeling guilt over her safety, the Cullen's leave Forks and Bella spirals into a depression for months. Sending e-mails to Alice to an address that is no longer used. During this period her father finally convinces her to see her old friends or she will go back to her mother. Bella discovers that she sees an apparition of Edward when she puts herself in peril, and engages in various risky activities just to see him. From taking a ride on a motorcycle with a stranger to cliff diving and almost killing herself. Jacob, reveals his romantic feelings for Bella, but she is in love with Edward, and does not want to pursue anything more than friendship with him. Lurking in the shadows is Victoria. She and her mate James met the Cullens in the first film and James began to track Bella, threatening her life. So Edward and his family killed him. In New Moon, Victoria wants revenge for James death and seeks to harm Bella. Taking Edward's mate as he took hers. When Edward believes, due to a cheap shot comment from Jacob, that Bella has died, he wants to end his life, as living in a world where she doesn't exist is too painful. By the end of the second film, Bella has saved Edward from punishment from the Volturi, the elite group of vampires who govern their laws. Eclipse, the third film of the franchise, brings Victoria back as she has plans to end Bella and Edward for her revenge. But they are able to battle her and her army of new born vampires, while also under the protection of Jacob and his pack, who Bella discovers in New Moon are werewolves. By the end of the third film, the Volturi are once again placated and Jacob is furious because Bella has agreed to marry Edward. The final two films bring about the wedding and honeymoon and Bella's choice to be turned into a vampire. But things go awry when Bella becomes pregnant on her honeymoon and has to lie to her father about not being home as the pregnancy is fast and takes its toll on her body. At the end of part one, Bella has given birth but dies do to the strain and as Edward injects his venom to save her, we are left in anticipation for the final film when it ends with Bella's eyes opening to the vampire red. At the end of it all, Bella, Edward, Jacob, the rest of the Cullens, a legion of their vampire friends and the wolf pack, gather to fight the Volturi when they are led to believe by misinformation that Edward and Bella created an immortal child. Their daughter captivates Jacob and he 'imprints' on her. Meaning for the rest of his life, he will do anything to protect her. In the end, they are proven true in their declarations as Alice, who has the gift of foresight, is able to show the head of the Volturi, Aro, that Renésmee, played by Mackenzie Foy and is Edward and Bella's daughter, is not a threat to them or their secrets. The Twilight Saga is a phenomenon that is still cultivating new followers of both the books and films and the board on Fan Forum shows that with new posters and their incredible post count of over 1,188,540! Join us on the the Twilight Saga board and rediscover a love story that begins with forever.

I just wanted to say I love your trailers! They’re really cool! ❤️ I was wondering where you find all the clips you use do you just find they on YouTube?
First off, thank you! It really means the world to see people liking it!
Now, down to the nitty gritty. There are a few different ways I find the clips, but all of them start off with deciding the FC.
Sometimes that’s decided by a fandom favorite (like Liam’s for my TRR trailer), sometimes because I know an actor that’d be perfect for it (like Justin Chon as Aiden), or the most difficult version of all: by one gifset I saw laying around and that would fit the trailer amazingly (like both Drake’s and Ava’s).
After that, I literally google the actor’s name and check out all of their work (from TV shows to movies and even photoshoots).
For this screenshot I’m using Daniel Di Tomasso (aka Drake) because this asshole gave me a TON of work:
Ignore the fact that my Google is in Portuguese, but basically on the right corner is where it lists all the actor’s previous and ongoing works. In Daniel’s case, I found the perfect scene in a gifset for my trailer, and for that I actually had to figure out which of his body of work had it. So, I looked in every one of them to see if I could find the outfit he was wearing. Fun fact: it was on one single episode of Witches of East End.
Okay, origin figured out, now’s time to find it. Usually when it comes to TV shows I try searching on YouTube for a clip from the show (most of them have it, like in Ava’s case that I actually found the exact scene I wanted, and sometimes I’m even luckier and find a compilation of scenes in 1080p from said show, like with Quinn’s and Maria’s case). But sometimes I’m incredibly unlucky and I don’t find anything, just bits and pieces from scenes that make no sense with the story of the book. Which was Daniel’s case.
When that happens I like to google a summary of every single episode from the series to try and figure out which of them could contain said scene. Sometimes it’s crystal clear (as in “so and so argue over something”) and sometimes there’s TOO MANY SIMILAR SCENES in the span of like 4-5 episodes. I honestly hate when that happens.
Sooo, it becomes my last resource to download the entire season (usually it’s easy to identify which season it is thanks to hair and makeup) and watch it just to find “I can’t watch you with him, hurts too much” (I literally did all this for just this quote). But there’s a plus to all my misery: I usually find a second FC that interacts with the actor I was looking for (both of the MCs’ faceclaims were found like that in both my TRR and Endless Summer trailers).
And that’s the hardest way with TV shows. There are also what I like to call “filler clips” that make the story of the trailer cohesive and tie the characters to the actual book. Sometimes it’s a video clip that I’d be using with no audio, sometimes it’s just the audio that fits perfectly with the narrative. In HSS’ case it was super easy, because Glee was my salvation. They had football, they had cheerleading and they had a band. So most of the filler clips were from the show I knew with the back of my hand. With the exception of the car and prom scenes, that I also remembered from the Paper Towns movie and knew exactly what to search to find it without downloading the entire thing.
When it comes to hard “filler clips”, the one I had the most difficulty was with Endless Summer. I had to change the color of a fox to create Furball, find clips of an island, of completely different environments and of volcanoes going nuts. I spent 4 of 7 days of research just looking those up. Second place goes to ILITW, not because it was difficult to find spirit and haunted related things, but because I HAD to look them up (and I’m fucking terrified of that shit).
Now going to movies, the biggest pain in my butt was Jake. First off, Jake has TONS AND TONS of fandom favorite FCs, so I had to decide which of them would give me more content. It so happened to be Michiel Huisman (sorry Ben Barnes stans).
Unlike Daniel, with Michiel I found this one single screenshot of him looking something up and was like “this is the movie I gotta find to make Jake real”. And so I looked it up and found 2:22, a sci-fi action movie with none other than Teresa Palmer, a plane that crashes and TONS of action. I had my plate full with it. I could’ve downloaded just the trailer for the movie, but to be honest I saw the scenes and went “I’m going to use everything I can from this” so I downloaded the movie and watched it whole before I started tearing it to pieces. Btw go watch the movie, it’s pretty damn good. I did the same with Liam’s FC.
And then there’s the impossibles: the FCs that have no good clip from an actual movie but tons of interviews and photoshoots recorded in 1080p and that fit their character. It was the case with Maxwell as Xavier Serrano, Olivia as Sophie Turner and Hana as Liu Yifei.
With Xavier the “main problem” was the fact that he is a model. He had no acting background and I had to find “vlog”-type interviews to put him in. At least he had tons of those to spare.
The problem with Sophie was pretty in your face: her only acting jobs were in movies that had nothing to do with Olivia or in Game of Thrones, that was too fictional and didn’t match the tone of Cordonia. Thank the gods for Vogue and their interviews though. She had the perfect one liners Olivia would have and was also dressed for the part.
Now with Hana, I know she isn’t a light-skinned Asian. I had Jamie Chung and tons of other actresses (I think there were 6?) open and none of them had clips that fit Hana. They were either too “aggressive”, too fictional (like Sophie) or with the worst quality ever. And making video edits is a lot different to gifs and icons (unfortunately). I was considering not even including Hana when I came upon this interview of Liu and I couldn’t imagine another person playing Hana. She had the looks, the outfits, the setting, even the lines that fit her. And note: I didn’t use one single movie that had her, they were all interviews and photoshoots. She fit the bill perfectly.
And that’s pretty much it. It’s the worst and most time consuming part of the trailer making process, but in the end I discover some pretty awesome movies and TV shows (seriously go watch 2:22 and Witches of East End). And that’s also why I always ask people to help out and send their favorite FCs for the trailer. Most of the time I end up using them.
Thanks again for this ask and so sorry for the long response! If you have any other questions involving the process of trailer-making just send them away!
