Pop superstar Michael Jackson, charged with child molestation, has again surrendered his passport to authorities who had briefly given it back so he could honour contractual obligations in Britain.

The prosecutor's spokesman, Jason Karpf, said: "Michael Jackson's passport is in the possession of the Santa Barbara district attorney."

Mr Karpf said says the passport had been surrendered on Tuesday local time.

However, Mr Karpf said he could not confirm if the singer used it after it was handed back to him.

"I don't have information if he ever made that trip," he said.

Jackson, 45, first surrendered the passport on November 20 after his arrest in Santa Barbara, near Los Angeles, on charges he molested a boy at his Neverland ranch.

But in a deal worked out between Jackson's lawyers and Santa Barbara prosecutor Thomas Sneddon, the passport was returned to him on December 20 so that he could travel to Britain to give a concert already booked.

Shortly after the trip was scheduled to begin, and amid press rumours that it had been cancelled, Mr Sneddon demanded that Jackson prove he was travelling or return the passport.

On December 24 the prosecutor issued a statement saying the matter had been resolved in a meeting with Jackson and his lead attorney, Mark Geragos, and that Jackson could keep his passport until January 6.
