junghwan is the best character in Reply 1988

I’ve seen some people say he’s dull and boring, and i wonder if we actually saw the same show or not because it’s clear to me that he’s the one person who cares the most about all the people he loves. When his dad feels under-appreciated, he goes out of his way to reciprocate his silliness and make him happy. He studies hard for his mother, not to mention, plans a wedding for her when he finds out his parents never had a wedding. Even though everyone else refer to his brother as a no-good dumb grown man, inferior to junghwan in every way, he never thinks of his brother like that and instead, always wants to make him happy- to the point that all the dreams he had for what he wants to be when he grows up are what his brother wishes he could be but cannot because of his illness. He’s the one who immediately hit the bullies when they said “are you bragging that you don’t have a dad?” to sunwoo, when he’d silently followed all their orders before. He’s the only one who puts up with dong-ryong’s constant chatter and adventures without ever stopping him. I don’t even need to get into all the things he does for doeksun. My boy junghwan, the “i waited for an hour every morning to go to school with you. at night i couldn't sleep at all worrying about you until you got home. i thought of nothing but you. just you. when i ran into you on the bus, when we went to the concert together, when you gifted me a shirt for my birthday... i was so happy that i thought i was going crazy. i wanted to see you more than a dozen times a day. i was happy just to see you.” junghwan. But most of all, he truly loved and cared about Taek, sacrificing and burying his own feelings for Taek’s, going out of his way to avoid doeksun because he could never hurt taek like that. Junghwan is a character who loved deeply and with his entire heart. He’s quiet, considerate and sure, grumbling. But the grumbling definitely comes from his mother. He’s grown up seeing his mother express her love for his father through annoyed yelling, grumbling, and scolding. That’s the only way he knows how to show that he cares and loves.

IN CONCLUSION, nobody better come for my boy and say he didn’t deserve Doeksun or whatever and that he was boring. He deserved the entire world and was the best of all the characters in the show. Thank you for coming to my tedtalk.

“Reply 1988” là một trong những phim để lại ấn tượng sâu đậm trong lòng mình, mà mình lại chưa “trả nợ” bằng một cái review nào. Một bộ phim đã khiến mình trải nghiệm đủ mọi cung bậc cảm xúc trầm bổng. Luyến tiếc có. Mà viên mãn cũng có. Nhớ nhất là những lúc ố á hò hét cùng bạn Gấu Bông.

Thế nhưng đoạn cuối lại hơi bị xịt một tẹo. Vì bạn Gấu theo phe Jung Hwan, còn mình lại ủng hộ Choi Taek. Bạn Gấu buồn đến nỗi đã bỏ xem giữa chừng, và lên án phim cũng như đài tVn, yêu cầu đòi lại công lý cho Jung Hwan. Đến tận bây giờ cái tag #justiceforJungHwan do bạn nào nghĩ ra vẫn làm mình tủm tỉm mãi. Nếu xét về một khía cạnh, thì “Reply 1988” quả là một chuyện tình buồn và dang dở. Một câu chuyện về Jung Hwan hi sinh tất cả cho gia đình, tình bạn, tình yêu, và cả tuổi trẻ nữa. Để đổi lại… chẳng một điều gì cả. Có một câu trích dẫn về Jung Hwan rất hay như thế này : “He gave the dream to his brother, love to his friend and his youth to the nation”. Thú thực là dù thuộc team Choi Taek chứ mình cũng buồn đứt ruột khi xem đến đoạn “lời tỏ tình muộn màng” của Jung Hwan, rồi tất cả bỏ đi, để lại chiếc nhẫn quân đội chỏng chơ trên bàn trà. Và cả phân đoạn behind the scenes, khi Jung Hwan bảo đã lặng người khi biết rút cuộc ai là người chồng của Deok Seon.

Trong cuộc sống vốn dĩ có rất nhiều điều dang dở và phũ phàng như vậy. Khi bạn cho đi rõ nhiều và nhận lại chẳng bao nhiêu. Cũng như Jung Hwan, trong thế giới phim ấy đã chẳng có một đền đáp nào cả.

Còn hôm nay khi đọc được tin hai diễn viên đóng Deok Seon và Jung Hwan hẹn hò, mình đã thực sự bất ngờ ! Nhưng vui thì nhiều hơn.

Cứ như thể, đó là một thế giới song song, nơi mọi điều bạn bỏ lỡ, đều sẽ trở thành hiện thực vậy.

Chỉ mong rằng, ở thế giới song song tuyệt vời ấy, không có một Choi Taek nào phải mang một trái tim tan vỡ.

Reply 1988 (RANT) *Spoilers

I’m still hung up on Reply 1988 especially since Jung Hwan didn’t end up with Duk Seon. I am seriously heartbroken and mad at the ending. Taek & Duk Seon’s relationship seemed to be rushed during the last few episodes which drove me nuts. I mean I love Taek, but he just isn’t the one for Duk Seon. Jung Hwan and Duk Seon had better chemistry and moments together. Jung Hwan was seriously the main actor and lead for her so how did he become a second lead!?! Like everyone else says, JUSTICE FOR JUNG HWAN because he seriously just cameoed himself in that drama. Taek didn’t have such a huge impact as Jung Hwan did and we didn’t even know what happened to Jung Hwan at the end. Is he happy? Is he married? There wasn’t much development after Sun Woo & Bora got married because all you see is Duk Seon and her husband (Taek) in the future. The whole video of them being recorded didn’t make sense either. Why were they being recorded for? I’m mad and going to stay mad. This was the worst of the Reply series. Truly upsetting.
