This canopy is not good solution for bike commuting in the rain

Collection of random thoughts/rants after installing the cheapest canopy on a regular mechanical bike and riding a couple times with it.

When I first saw using someone using a canopy on their e-bike, I thought this was it, this was the final piece that will let me commute all seasons and I will finally be able to save commute costs forever. Sadly this ain't it. There are reasons why all the sales postings of bike canopies only say this is for motorcycles and e-bikes. The wind resistance at the front is very high, causing me to shift to easier gears to keep going and still it's harder to keep up the pace. My daily commute on a regular bike would take me 25 minutes, but with this canopy bike it's almost doubled.

I can't decide if having the sides open is a good or bad idea. Gust coming from the side will go right through instead of knocking my bike over, but I can tell you it's very unpleasant when I take a car roadside splash in the face. Maybe I will look into sewing extra pieces to the left side so I don't get splashed so much. They do sell another version with the side covers, but I can't find any one selling that version for cheap.

Even with a canopy like this you still to wear rain gear. Regular shoes and pants won't cut it. The front panel is too high, and the splash from your front wheel will still escape the front fender from time to time, so by the time you finish you will walk away with wet feet unless your pants and shoes are waterproof

Also, the height adjustment is not easy. If you are more than 5'8, it's better to ride in a more aggressive position so your head won't bump against the top. If you wish to ride in a more relaxed angle, then you need to have your handle bar really high up and the back piece being at least seat height and close to your back so the elastic frame contracts and pushed the top higher. It's like trying to solve a parabolic math equation.

A couple other issues

- Parking: Canopy takes up more space upward, but as long as you fold up the front screen and keep it above the handlebar, it will not interfere with parking in general.

- Storing the canopy: It's quite annoying to put it together and take it apart. The elastic frame bars will keep trying to expand, so you need a big flat bag that can keep the canopy folded up. Seller didn't provide anything for you to store this at all. I think it's just going to stay on my bike until it breaks. Good thing I have a backup bike for dryer weather.

- Losing access to public transportation because your bike has a freaking shed on top of it.

- Dismounting on my stepover frame is somewhat awkward. A step through frame will definitely work better.

One thing I do like about the canopy is that it works pretty well as a mobile shed.

​

There are a couple revisions to this design with more sturdy steel frames, which is good but not very useful on a bicycle with all the weight sitting on the handlebar.

​

Overall, I still think I can make it work as long as I account for the extra traveling time and if I don't mind having a tougher workout, but I won't recommend it unless you already ride an ebike.
