#just trying to figure out how to get more than 10 panels in one post

(all scenes are depicted as platonic)
So every Inktober I try to do something more challenging, and this year I thought I would make a short comic/fanfic. I think I got the idea for this one a year ago but I was already wrapped up with another Inktober. Eventually I solidified the idea by making my own prompt list some time ago.
This comic is split into three parts with 10 days focusing on each of them, 30 in total, everything is compiled here. I wanted to post them after October in case I wanted to change anything.
This first part takes place in the summit.
The comic is basically all improvised, that means no planning for the composition, plot, or sketching any drawings. The most planning I did was write a few scripts ahead of time within the month to save me some time but most of them would be changed last minute anyways.
As for the plot, I won't go too deep into it because I don't want to talk too much, so you'll just find commentary on the making of the comic and stuff.
This first part is a little gimmick-y compared to the next two, with new elements appearing almost every day. It’s because I relied a lot on the prompts (dog, milk, etc.) to keep things happening, eventually I move further away from them.
What is surprising to me is how much the art changes as the days go by especially within the span of one month. I did refine a few things to keep it more consistent but this is nearly indistinguishable from the original drawings.
I should also mention that my favourite aspect of this project was adding references to the game and subtle details (if you can find it all, awesome!!) This may have been done quickly but I like to have those things and put at least a bit of effort into the dialogue.
Part 2
Eventually I figured that drawing the same setting for 30 days straight would drive me insane, hence why this comic is split like it is. I’m glad I did because it makes the story a little more interesting, seeing the characters have different attitudes in different places and whatnot.
This one takes place in the cave directly after pt 1. Admittedly I do better drawing outdoor settings, it's what I'm used to, but the cave wasn't so bad to figure out.
I remember these two days I was streaming drawing the comic to my friends, so I kinda zoned out while we were talking lol
One of the prompts was about napping, so I made Dwarf sleep. I believe I was tired that day too and it was therapeutic to draw and include that. Also they look cute, I think.
18 & 19 have some of my favourite drawings in the comic. The campfire lighting is what we'd get if I had a bit more energy each day, and I like the perspective in the first panel of 19.
I find this last section interesting, because of all the 30 days, it’s the only one in Dwarf’s POV. I felt like it was fitting to do something like that at the time.
Part 3
Since we were approaching Halloween, I wanted to have a special part for it. It’s related to the other two parts but it takes place some time after. I’m really sorry it’s out of season, if it were up to me I would have had this post out earlier (thank my midterms for the delay)
Out of all the other parts this one is my favourite. Maybe because it’s more recent I’m inclined to think that way but it has some of my fave moments that I've written here.
Other than that I don't have much commentary for this part. More thoughts at the end!
I was caught up everyday atp, but I didn’t have much spare time to prepare for the ending (I wrote it the morning of that day). I think this is a decent conclusion though.
I intend on coming back to this story, maybe next year to make a continuation but we'll see what happens. There are definitely things that I want to come back to someday.
Thank you for making it this far btw. It's been an eventful month for me beyond this (Untitled) comic, but there wasn't a single aspect of this that I didn't enjoy doing. It's a silly project and I care about it.
Also, I'm not going to neglect the 31st of October! That day will get an illustration, where I will pick my favourite panel and redraw it. I want to take my time with this one so it's not out yet, but hopefully I can finish by Christmas.
#long post#stardew valley#sdv dwarf#krobus#sdv fanart#sdv#stardew valley dwarf#sdv krobus#stardew valley krobus#if you have thoughts on this comic feel free to share#i havent gone too into detail especially with the plot rn so i would love to discuss about it more if prompted

I was pursuing your “Destiel” tag (thank you for posting it for that anon, btw, and bringing it back to my attention), and came across this statement from you:
“As a result, douchy Jensen + going off script = other actors trying to cope. My favorite was 2016 because that was when my girlfriend leaned close to the screen and said, "Jared, blink twice if you're being held against your will". Since then Jared had figured out how to handle these ~unscripted~ moments, but Misha hasn't.”
What was the moment in particular at 2016 JIB that made your girlfriend say that? Or what was Jensen going at that one? Wasn’t Gen at that one, too?
Also, what would you say Jared’s strategy has been in dealing with Jensen (when drunk) on stage at JIB? And why does Jensen seem “meaner” to Jared at JIB than at CE or AHBL cons? Which is closer to thier actual dynamic, do you think?
And I just have to add, it was pretty amusing seeing Misha momentarily (sadly not longer) regret his life choices at, was it 2019 JIB, where he pointed out the Destiel shirt and Jensen yelled about “where is it real?” Do you think Jensen was actually annoyed in this panel? I say yes, but my brother says no.
Jensen seems to keep it together more at JIBs post pandemic, but I was at JIB 13, and he gave off a huge air of just being over the whole thing by his solo Sunday panel. And he and Rich were essentially running out the clock by being loud idiots (my ears still hurt from being near a speaker).
They all claim to love JIB, but they also all seem pretty over it come Sunday.
Sorry that got long. Would love to see your response to any parts.
This was the first time I briefly talked about the infamous Jib con. Back in 2016 I used to think their co/dependent friendship was doomed at the 10-year mark because when one isn’t adjusting to the changing time, then the idolatries friendship can’t last more than 10 years at best. I listed a few examples (X) from a feminist blog about women ending their female friendships, a woman ending her friendship with a male friend (X) Oliver Broudy’s story of ending his 10-year friendship with a college friend (X). These friendships ended because one of them was stuck and making more and more demands on the unstuck friend. We know happened after season 10 wrapped up (X) (X).
Anyways, what got my girlfriend's attention was Jared looking like a tug of war rope between Gen and Jensen and the boys. Regular corporate SPN cons in the U.S are already a male-dominated atmosphere bordering on frat boy shenanigans. At least there are corporate handlers and security to help keep the actors in line, plus alcohol are banned for actors. Jib cons are fan-run with no handlers and alcohol are allowed, and usually there are no actresses because the cost of the extra Jensen/Misha and Jared/Misha panels means some actors are going to get cut out and it’s usually the actresses. Without female colleagues around, the men really rile each other up at Jib cons, it’s part of their bonding and one-upmanship rituals. I think why Gen rarely participated in SPN cons is because she didn't want to be around all that dude energy. But 2016 was different because I think she blamed herself for leaving the 2015 British con early and is still traumatize that she nearly lost Jared few days later, so Gen agreed to let Jared drag bring her to Jib con. Men don’t like wives/girlfriends homing in on their bro times and Jensen was noticeable irritated that Jared’s wife was there and during the closing ceremony Jensen used air quotations marks while talking about Gen’s marriage to Jared who had his arms wrapped around her. He looked peeved at Jensen and then then laughed it off because what else could he do on stage?
(Side note: it’s not easy for men to find male friends and keeping them. I hated the movie I love you, man because it was too familiar, and Paterson made me uneasy because Adam Driver's character has no male friends and he's more than okay with that because he has a wife.)
Jensen seems "meaner" not just to Jared but to every actor there, especially Misha. At these fan-run conventions, there are no "scripts" (guidelines actually) to follow. Most actors were still going by the guidelines from corporate-run conventions when they're on stage, but not Jensen because it's part of his upmanship as a way to both bond and dominate others. It's a Ryan Seacrest and Brian Dunkleman type situation. Maybe Jensen learned this trick from Ryan who used to be his roommate. Misha is not a natural improviser, his guest appearance on Whose Line Is it Anyways shows that, so he's the least apt at handling Jensen's off script moments. Half the time Jensen wasn't actually drunk but acts like it to avoid the inevitable asinine Destiel-loaded questions from the hellers in the audience.
Jared's strategy was about the same at pre-2016 JIB cons and CE cons because he's pretty apt at smoothing things over between Jensen and the fans. At the infamous 2013 New Jersey con a self-claiming bisexual girl tried to ask Jensen a loaded Destiel question and he snapped at her with, “don’t ruin it for everybody” and Jared immediately calmed Jensen down and salvaged the rest of the experience for sane fans.
Stuff like this is closer to their real life dynamic as the Giver and the Taker. If you read the "codependency tag", Jared the Giver cleans up the messes the Taker make. Givers think they're helping but they're actually enabling and don't improve things. Jensen's reputation took a slight hit, and it took a few years for the New Jersey con to be memory-holed. Apparently Jensen didn't learn from this and 3 years later mocked a girl wearing a "Destiel is real" shirt at the 2019 JIB. Misha told Jensen to not “fight with fans” and Jared was gesturing to a fan in the front row as if saying don’t look at me look at him. That may answer your question, Jared stopped trying to calm Jensen down and instead focus on heading off fans who gets too snippy at Jensen, like at a DC con few years back where a girl was trying to look cool but came off sounding hostile towards Jensen, so Jared left the stage and hugged the stuffings out of the girl, deflating her hostile-sounding voice.
I don't think I've seen Jensen's solo panel at JIB13, but he's usually looks like he's watching the clock during his Jared-less panels so that's nothing new. It's been the case for many years and a common complaint by fans, it's why CE stopped having solo J panels early on because Jensen needs a scene partner. It goes back to why Jensen works better as a scene-stealing supporting actor instead of a leading man. How Jensen made Dean Winchester have memorable moments was by putting his focus on the other person. By using this method, Jensen can stop worrying about how he’s going to say his lines and speak intuitively, this helps make Dean appear truthful to the audience. It may be why Jensen doesn’t read scripts ahead of time. Jensen doesn’t go into a scene looking to do a scene, instead he goes in looking to be open and give over to how the other person (in this case, Jared playing Sam) makes him feel. This method worked great for Jensen when his character has Sam to focus on, and Jensen has Jared to react to. It’s why Dean’s dying moments with Sam in the barn works so well in the series’ finale.
.
You probably heard of the saying, “acting is reacting”.
A demon’s acting philosophy in The Good Place: “Demons have to learn that Acting Is Reacting. And Reacting Is Pre-acting. But Pre-acting? Well, that’s just being.”
While “acting is reacting” gets mocked in the acting community because it’s a trap alot of actors fall into by adjusting their truthful inner life to their assumptions about the text. Good acting is adjusting the text to your authentic emotion which is the result of the other person. This where Jensen’s good acting comes from and it’s become his comfort zone and made him a multimillionaire by his mid 30s. He’s in what my acting coach calls “the truthful contact”, it’s where actors are taught the first stage of authentic acting. The next stage is “crafting”. When you’re working solo without a screen partner, your skill at crafting becomes vital. Crafting means anywhere from ability to endow meaning to objects so they have emotional meaning is important, or effectively get across justifications and point of views.

Sacred realm, Sacred realm, Sacred realm!!!!!
OH BOY, I AM EXCITED ABOUT THIS ONE
Prepare yourself for the most excited screaming you've ever heard because this update is wonderful and I love it and I'm so excited about it that I'm writing this instead of sleeping and it will be worth it.
Set the clock its 12.45am lets see if I can do this before I have to go to bed for the morning shift.
Alright, now for the important stuff! Sacred realm belongs to @zelda-the-sacred-realm, and all art from the comics belongs to the comic artist. I've got their permission to do these!
Link to the comic can be found here! :D
Now, get some popcorn and if your like me probably an energy drink too and lets goooooo!
Firstly...
HI
HELLO THERE
OH MY
Big evil big bad. Who's hair is stunning i could never ngl.
(Investigates)
It's awesome to see the black knight like this. (I believe that's right? Correct me if I'm wrong.)
Though im trying to figure out what he found unexpected? Is it Sky? Is Sky the unexpected thing? Good, No body expects the blorbo to come out of the medallion and whoop ass.
Self-sacrificing boy please you are in pain
Cinnamon roll link please i know you're not used to this, but he's got this
He's so damn pretty dammit, pretty boy right here. Hylia chose him for his looks first, 10/10.
Yesssssssssss
GET THEM! GET IT!
THE FACT THAT THEY JUMP IN FRONT OF HIM IS GIVING ME SO MUCH LIFE THEY ARE LIKE PROTECTIVE UNCLES OF THE SMALL CINAMON ROLL.
Like low key look how Sky is moving he's pushing towards time but moving more to the right to do so then time is. Which would indicate that he's moved rather quickly to get in front of this thing.
They have to protect the small hero and it gives me life.
Okay, this all but confirms this isn't the first time they've done this.
Oh and it has to be said
BY THE POWER OF STUBBORN FRIENDSHIP!
That's a practised spell
(using a few panels from this update here) Chapter 4 - part 1
So, I think that the last time the spirits gathered was sometime around when Twilight was still alive, we know that Time had direct contact with Twilight because of the comic panels in the last update.
We also know that Time recognised Sky when he first appeared in the last update.
So there one of two explanations
The medallion or something akin to it has been used in a previous hero's journey. And so some of the spirit already know each other
Or being a spirit grants them foresight that they can just fight with each other like this.
Im more inclined to lean towards the first one at this stage because of that recognition from time but to be honest I think we need to meet Twilight first before we get any answers about that.
I am also going to assume the element that time yields is Electricity (Or time haha.)
It looks like lightning, but we've also seen him use a time spell so I'm not entirely sure at this stage.
Gonna lean towards lighting tho, it suits him
YEAH GET HIM!
He looks so tired, and the lines against him have been growing longer. I assume its more and more of the barrier sucking his energy away.
Pretty boy alert
i am once again an advocate for the Sky is the Best Bean Club he just needs a nap he's going to be fine
Also, Medalion jails for Sky because he's eepy.
I assume this is how we are going to keep Sky out of this arch, he is too tired and is resting from doing this now. I hope we see you soon blorbo!
HA
This made me chuckle, Time just grabbing him by the waist like the child he is brings me joy (Im aware Link isn't a child but he is in the cinnamon roll outfit right now so he is a child)
And time is older than him and is at current the only one who can help with the current predicament.
We interupt the end of this post for a Sky appreciation segment because he is the best bean and is my blorbo and got a bunch of great panels this update
He
Being the hero
Jumping into harm's way
The face of determination
He
Sleepy
Sleepy boy we got sleepy sky and I love him
Okay im done, We shall get back to the end now.
That's everything from me! :D
I hope you enjoyed my rambling please do let me know if you spotted anything I didn't! Thanks for hanging out with me and for uhh, also hanging out as I yell excitedly about my blorbo because, to be honest, I love him and it wouldn't be something from me if I didn't soooo....
Yeah!
Thanks again to the artist for letting me do this! I really appreciate it!
Have a great night!

Have u ever posted your comic or animation workflow anywhere? Im super curious on how you tackle the process, especially not using a drawing tablet. I know you have a very simple (and adorable) style so that probably helps in terms of workflow -- Im just curious about the steps you take.
Thank you! With both comics and animation my key thing is to not spend too much time on any particular thing, just draw loose and fast. Honestly the only downside to drawing with a mouse is that I can tell my arm has extremely specific muscle memory regarding it- if my mouse breaks and I get a new one I have to spend a good month or so just letting my hand get used to it again lol. Same with if my setup gets readjusted too much- right now my setup is my mouse on one of those padded mousepads, on top of 2 books, with my elbow resting on my 3DS case (I'll get an actual pillow or something for it eventually lol). But luckily thanks to this I suffer very minimal wrist pain 👍
(...Okay I started to go really in depth in my process here, so sorry if this is way more than what you were asking. Putting it under a readmore just to save space lol)
With MFM in particular, I start by writing out the entire script for the next story arc, which really is just all of the dialogue and vague notes about any important actions. Then I do the paneling with very loose stick-figure like sketches of where the characters are and what they're doing. I prefer having very little planning when it comes to character poses and panel shapes, coming up with those on the fly makes things much more exciting and faster to make. But it's the opposite with dialogue... it needs to be 100% FINAL before I draw a single line lol.
That's part of my script for my most recent chapter, as well as what my extremely loose goofy thumbnail sketching is like. I write the script as one big thing and don't separate it into pages until I actually start drawing- then I go and color change it just to keep track of what dialogue goes on each page
After that, I go back and do the ACTUAL sketch, as well as the lettering (I don't believe this is how it's done professionally. I used to do lettering as the very last step in the process... but then found it hard to cram speech bubbles in the right places lmao.) After that is lineart, coloring, background flat colors, then shading/rendering for all of it. I do each step in batches, as in I sketch out ALL pages of a chapter before moving to lineart, I line ALL pages before starting coloring, etc. I find it way easier to be productive when it's broken up like that, though when I first started the comic I used to draw each page to completion before starting the next (but also, the comic's style was DRASTICALLY simpler back then haha)
(Unfortunately I merged some of the shading to the background flat colors so it's not entirely accurate... oops) FireAlpaca has a sand texture feature that I only found out about last year- adding that to the backgrounds makes them look 10x better with WAY less effort.
With animation, it depends on the project. For simple 5-10 second animation I make for fun, there's very little planning lol. I skip some steps in the process- I'll sketch out the keyframes (and maybe any difficult inbetweens if necessary), line those, then go straight into making linework inbetweens. I'm not a cleanup artist and have no experience in that, so I always find trying to line my rough animation makes everything jittery and wobbly. If I do it with a clean line from the start then I can avoid that and save a lot of time 👍
For my bigger projects (such as the Parvey cartoon and the MFM Kickstarter trailer), I do the whole animatic with final audio first and foremost, with the animatic being almost like the keyframes. I split them up into individual shots, .mp4 files anywhere between 1-30 seconds usually, and animate those one at a time. I'm a huge fan of free to use programs and try to use them as much as I possibly can, here's a list of the ones I use:
FireAlpaca- for the actual drawing part itself (storyboarding/animating/etc). FireAlpaca has a feature that lets you export every frame as it's own drawing, as well as an onion skin mode
Windows Movie Maker- for compiling all of those frames into video format, creating individual shots. If you upload all of your frames and set them to around 0.08 seconds, it equals about 12fps (I usually animate at 0.10 seconds/10fps, its a bit slower but looks nice)
Onlinesequencer.net- for making music. It's the place I've made all of my songs on, like the timeloop song, hyperworkaholic, and the background music for the MFM Kickstarter trailer.
Audacity- for editing audio/music. Also great for recording things directly from your desktop
DaVinci Resolve- for editing and putting together all of the shots into one big video. Can get kind of intensive on the computer during rendering, so watch out.
YouCut (app)- also for editing and compiling shots, I used this one a lot a couple years back but I'm not sure how well it holds up. Doesn't need much phone storage to download but needs a lot to render videos.
MS Paint (yes really)- for typing up text. FireAlpaca has a text option but I don't like it as much as Paint's.
...The only thing I genuinely can't do alone is voice acting. Luckily there's a big voice acting community on Twitter and they're all amazing to work with!
This got... way more in depth than I planned for it to be, so sorry if this is way more than what you were asking lol. But that's my general process when it comes to my art 👍

A mini character analysis on Twilight/Loid/[redacted]
As much as I am a tiny bit sad that Loid is still not having that reflection I want him to have after the last arc, I think I will have to remind myself something I posted somewhere else:
“The problem is, Twilight is inching towards his hidden self, [redacted], instead of running towards being ‘Loid’. As much as we want to believe that [redacted] is closer to ‘Loid’ in nature, and that he could have become ‘Loid’ if war didn’t happen, ‘Loid’ is still a work persona created by Twilight to complete Operation Strix. This persona allowed Twilight to ‘love’, but it is also a constant reminder that it is a facade. ‘Loid’ was a middle ground for Twilight to get back in touch with [redacted]. But now it has become a battleground where Twilight and [redacted] are having a standoff.”
I’ll be as patient as I can be.
(Manga spoilers ahead: and an analysis of ch.77)
I see people on twitter saying that everything we love about Loid has gone downhill since ch.62. I don’t necessarily think so because we have ch.68, but it is kinda true he doesn’t seem to get much development on the dad/husband department since the end of the cruise arc. To a point that people started to be angry at him and Endo since ch.75.
Loid has been in this utter confusion since the cruise arc. Before that, he doesn’t realise he has this confusion - he has been able to use the excuse, you know, Loid “for the mission” Forger, to justify everything. The cruise arc is really the first time he’s not on the mission. Basically it takes 50 chapters for Endo to finally ask Loid this important question, “What if it’s not for the mission?”
This poor man has been confused ever since, like in ch.76:
This is, of course, just this stupid man’s way of asking if he’s a good enough father for Anya for the mission. But it doesn’t go away easily. He has been a spy for more than a decade. And before that he was alone for years. Being a Forger for only three months is not going to reverse that many years of trauma.
But his true self is winning. Has been winning since ch.62. He still tries to rationalise everything using his spy radar, and somehow he ends up being absolutely genuine.
In ch. 62, right after this scene where he deliberately reminded himself that this is “Loid’s” house:
He somehow chose to be a real dad instead of being a good spy:
And the same thing happened again in ch.66:
Sandwiched between all the spy-talks he had in his head, there is this transparent bubble. This is also the bubble that convinces me that he knows she is keeping secrets, but somehow he doesn’t care. But this is for another day.
His head says spy, but his actions always speak otherwise.
Endo loves to play with the idea of misinformation. He blatantly said in the fanbook that the info Franky has on the Garden is an exaggerated version of it, and is not accurate. The more obvious example would be the Handler’s arc in Ch.63. This is a story about secrets and lies, but there is a grain of truth in all the lies these characters tell us. Especially Loid “for the mission” Forger. From day 1 we knew Twilight’s a liar and a very cool one. But somehow Endo also makes him to be this genuine and sincere man. And he also needs therapy.
So Endo shows us how much he really needs therapy, just look at all these similarities, like this:
Ch.77
Ch.62.3
Or this: Ch.77
Ch.22
Ch.67.1
But the real fear is always this: am I worthy for the family? Does she feel that I am worthy enough?
Ch. 77
For Loid “for the mission” Forger, this basically translates to, my wife and daughter are upset my mission is failing because I’m not good enough I’m a bad spy. He has hit himself with this “bad spy! bad spy!” mentality so many times, it’s basically a running gag now.
Ch.10
Ch.17.5
Ch.29
Okay I give up finding every single panel of him panicking because it’s too much. But I think you get it.
Mr. Austin is so obviously a foil for Loid. As the therapy unfolds, we were trying to figure Loid out just as Loid tried hard to figure Mr. Austin out.
Loid even asked the same question we want to ask him:
Isn’t that exactly why people are mad at him now? Is he lying to himself when he says for the mission, or is he just lying to us the whole damn time?
I think the problem is that we are all expecting Loid to be his actual persona. And it could be. But Ch.62 is also reminding all of us that “Loid” is something invented by Twilight. Even Twilight is something invented. By [redacted]. We love Loid. We kinda like Twilight, mostly because he’s hot af. But do we like [redacted], the man with all the flaws and merits Loid and Twilight have?
You see, like father, like daughter. Anya and [redacted] really don’t know what normality is. In Ch. 76:
And in Ch. 77:
They really don’t know what it is like to be a normal family, although they are already in one, and they sure feel very loved.
Remember back in Ch.10/Ep.7, when he said this: “I wonder what it’d feel like to have a real family.” This really is Endo asking [redacted] the same question, “What if this is not for the mission? What if you are in a real family?”
And [redacted] still doesn’t know the answer, although the answer is really there right from the start. He is this stupid, stupid man, who’s also absolutely traumatised and utterly confused. But you know what? If this is a story about recovery and rediscovery, then:

How we got here from there
Or, the long journey of a longform long-running webcomic about a long man with long wings.
In the spirit of @feathernotes and @phantomarine who have been talking about just starting your webcomic and not worrying about being "ready", I was inspired to do a post about White Noise's origin! I'm a little limited by the fact that I either left behind or destroyed a lot of the art I have from prior to 2009, so you'll have to take my word for it.
Cringe Truth below the cut!
The Cringe Truth of White Noise is that it has its roots in a Pokemon x Yu Yu Hakusho x self-insert(s) roleplay thread I used to do with an internet friend I made on Neopets guild forums way back in 2002-ish. We would come home from school every day and RP over AIM, and then when we had to get offline, whoever left first would email the other one, and we would continue via email until we were back on AIM at the same time.
Liya was my self insert.
This isn't even remotely the earliest art of her, it's just the earliest I have on hand. I was drawing her for almost a decade by the time I drew this one. Imagine the earlier drawings as being like I traced over Sailor Moon characters that I printed out from deviantART and gave them a brown ponytail.
The funny thing is Liya really hasn't changed much from her original form! I also had loose brown curls that I kept in a ponytail 24/7 to the point that it showed when I had it down (which is why her hair is 'dented' like that). I did it because I was trans and didn't know it; she does it because she hasn't realized she can just cut it off and be butch yet.
Other characters that date back from this time period: Yoshi (originally an InuYasha/Rurouni Kenshin pastiche), Hawk (I don't remember when he got wings but they were white at first), Numair (named after the Tamora Pierce character and filling a Koenma kind of role), Helly (sort of--I had an elf character named Kamui who had the same temperament, and he was eventually transmuted into Helly) and...Kurogane.
I've never named Kurogane but he appears in the background of the comic a few times, as my own personal inside joke.
Vlad came along somewhere between this RP period and planning the comic, but I can't remember when or why. I don't have drawings from that time (~2004?) but he was the first character I drew when I got a tablet for the first time.
Everyone else came along later when I started actually planning out the comic.
All this said: the reason I started White Noise as a weekly webcomic is because I wanted to learn to draw better.
At the time I was in college majoring in animation, but I didn't feel like I was learning very much at all (the program was badly structured; I had more art history classes than anything else. It was a mess.) I was also working nights in order to feed myself, and so had a lot of downtime. I had this story rattling around in my head from my RP days, so I figured, why not just give it a go?
For posterity here's a photo of a chapter 1 panel in progress, back in 2011 with my typical college diet in the bg:
(Chapter 1 was originally pencil on paper, scanned in and colored in PS. I later re-drew it to make it fully digital to match with the rest of the comic.)
There's been a lot of talking about not waiting until you're 'ready' to start a webcomic, and I agree with that sentiment. Try framing it like this: making a comic every week for years and years will improve your art way more than any prep work you can do before starting the comic. It's like learning to swim. You can read about swimming all you want, but you're not going to really figure it out until you do it. If your early comics are bad, well, that's normal. It used to be an expected part of doing webcomics; I blame the shift into expecting webcomics to be polished from start to finish partly on commercialization in the space, but that's an angry rant for another time.
With this background, here's the collage I posted for WN's 10 year anniversary back in 2021:
And now we're here.
So do your webcomic. Put it on ComicFury or make a janky little site for it. Be okay with imperfect pages and be prepared to shout into the void for a while. Even if it's always a hobby, if it never makes you a dime or wins you any awards--that's fine! You'll be a lot happier if you learn not to worry about that stuff, and just make something that will help you grow and make you happy. We could do with a lot more work like that in the world imo.
#webcomics#comics#wn comic#white noise#comix#indie comics#webtoon#comic history#webcomic history#web comic#original comic#also I'm not going to tell you to not destroy your old work but...#it IS nice to have around so you can look at it and feel good about how much you've grown#can't say I regret losing all that stuff but whatever

It's been almost two weeks since my last sewing update, but I have been making progress on a couple different projects, thankfully. I mentioned in my last post that I was hesitant to cut into a king-sized 100% linen bedsheet that I've been hoarding for 10+ years. I knew I wanted to make an apron, but I also knew that it wouldn't take up anywhere near the whole sheet, and I had the thought that I might be able to get two projects out of this one sheet (and the remnants of the matching fitted sheet) if I was careful about how I cut out all my pieces. Possibly a gathered tiered skirt/petticoat, along with the apron.
I measured the two long sides of the flat sheet that had identical ~1.25" deep hems, and I found that each side was 112" or just over 3 yards long, not counting the top and bottom hems. That meant if I did side seams, I could get a 6 yard wide bottom tier for the skirt and not have to do a hem at all, just use what was already there. Not the widest hemline on this kind of skirt (I have a purchased skirt with a 25 yard hem, and years ago I made a 26 yard tiered skirt out of muslin), but with this heavy weight linen it felt like 6 yards at the hem would be plenty.
Gathered tiered skirts are really just rectangles and a bit of simple math. Since the sheet's side hem determined the size of the lowest tier at 224", I figured I would do 2-to-1 gathers and make the next tier up 112" wide, and the third tier up 56" wide. A fourth tier at that 2-to-1 gathering ratio would have been only 27" wide, which wouldn't have fit over my hips, so the skirt would have 3 tiers.
I'm a short girl at not quite 5'2" and I like to wear my skirts pretty low on my hips for spoonie comfort issues, so after measuring a purchased skirt whose length I like, I decided that between 30" and 33" inches in total length would be ideal. With three tiers that length could easily be divided into tiers that are each 10"-11" tall. I added a half inch for seam allowance (but no hem allowance on the lowest tier, since I was re-using the existing hem) to get the exact measurements for each of the pieces I needed for the skirt.
I was able to tear most of my pieces, since the linen bedsheet was nicely on the grain and tore relatively cleanly, thus saving my hands from cutting all those long pieces. I had meant to cut the top tier at 14" tall so that I'd have room to turn under a nice thick waistband too -- and then I totally forgot and cut it at 12" just like the middle tier, lol. I was able to get one of the middle tier pieces and both of the top tier pieces out of the remains of the matching fitted sheet, so I only needed one middle and two bottom tiers from the flat sheet. That left me with plenty of flat sheet left over for the apron, but I'll talk more about that in my next sewing post.
With my pieces all cut out, it was time to start the most annoying part of making a gathered tiered skirt: gathering all those tiers. I'm trying to sew with cotton thread more often these days, but for the gathers I switched back to polyester thread just for the strength. For the two bottom tier and two middle tier pieces I ran two lines of gathering stitches along the top edge, placed pins to divide each panel into quarters, and got to gathering and pinning.
With tiered skirts I really prefer to work from the bottom up, so that I'm always attaching a gathered piece to a completely flat piece of fabric, and save side seams for last. So the bottom tier pieces got gathered up and attached to the middle tier pieces, then the middle tier got gathered up sewn to the top tier.
Since I accidentally cut my top tier pieces shorter than I'd meant to, I did play around with adding a separate waistband for the top tier to be gathered onto. But I couldn't do a full 2-to-1 gather if I wanted the waistband to pull on over my hips, and the waistband made the proportions look weird, like the top tier was too long. So I ended up cutting the waistband off after I sewed it and actually shortening the top tier even a little bit more. After turning under the top edge to enclose the raw ripped edge and then turning under 3cm (~1.2") for a waistband casing, that top tier ended up being about 9" tall, and the proportions of that look much better for some reason.
Before I sewed the side seams, I decided that this skirt needs to have pockets, of course. I knew I was planning to do French seams to protect the raw edges against unraveling, so I put the pockets in with a French seam as well.
With the pockets in place, the next step was to do the side seams (including the pocket bags), being careful to match up the height of the hem and each of the tiers so everything was nice and clean and square. Then I was able to turn under that waistband casing and sew it in place -- my original plan had been put in three separate channels for narrow elastic that would result in a bit of a faux-cartridge pleating look, but actually getting the elastic strung through there turned out to be more of a pain than it was worth, so I ended up picking that out and just using a single 1" wide elastic band in the waistband casing instead.
And with that, the skirt was technically wearable, and with some fabrics I might have been happy to leave it there. But the raw ripped edges at the seams between each of the tiers worried me. I've had well-loved sewing projects just shred after many wears and washes because I left the seams unfinished, figuring I would be the only one to see the inside. Ideally I want this skirt to be in my rotation for years and years, so I decided to make the effort to finish those seams too.
My original plan had been to cover the raw edges inside with 3/4" herringbone twill tape. For some reason I was convinced that I had a bunch of it left over from a Wasteland Weekend project from 2018, only to discover that I actually only had ~3 yards left. So rather than ordering more and waiting for it to arrive (and then inevitably having some of that left over too), I decided to just make some 3/4" tape from the linen sheet itself. Since this whole skirt is rectangles on-grain and the tape wouldn't have to go around any curves, I made the tape from on-grain rectangles too, rather than bothering with proper bias tape.
With the hem and the waistband already cleanly finished, I just needed tape to cover the ~3 yard seam between the bottom and middle tier and the ~1.5 yard seam between the middle and top tier. I tore nice straight strips, trimmed off the frayed edges, and ironed the raw edges under to give me that 3/4" width. It's three layers thick in the middle but only 2 layers thick on the sides, since it isn't a proper double-fold tape.
Then it was just an issue of pinning it over the raw edges inside the skirt -- first from the inside in roughly the right place and then from the outside to make sure it lined up with the seam well.
I stitched-in-the-ditch from the outside right where the gathers met the next tier up, and then went back and did another line of stitching just slightly up from that, using the width of my machine foot (~1cm) as a guide. That covered all the raw edges inside and reinforced the seam, and gave it a nice neat appearance from the outside.
It also had the added benefit of behaving almost like cording on a corded petticoat -- the gathered seems have a lot more body and stiffness now than they did before, which gives the finished skirt a really lovely lofty structure.
The whole skirt ended up being about 31" long, right in that 30"-33" length I had originally aimed for, and when I wear it low on my hips where it's most comfortable, it just brushes the tops of my feet.
My plan is to wear this mostly under other long skirts and dresses, more as a petticoat than a skirt on its own (tho it is heavy enough and neat enough to be worn on its own, if I want). That lofty structure from the seam finishes adds a lot of floof to my other long skirts, just barely peeking out the bottom of the purchased green skirt I originally measured to figure out the length for this one, and hiding completely under my purchased 25 yard burgundy skirt but giving it enough extra volume that it doesn't drag on the ground quite so badly.
As the colder weather sets in I'm sure this will get a lot of wear under skirts and dresses (including the several dresses I'm still planning to sew in the next couple months!), but even now in the last heat of summer it's quite comfortable to wear, since it's linen. Jack commented that it seemed like a lot of work for a skirt that won't be seen (and it did manage to remind me how much I dislike gathering long lengths of fabric), but as long as it's functional and gets used often, I feel like all the effort was worth it.
While I was putting this together, I also cut out and started assembling the apron project from the same bedsheet. Even with all those pieces cut out, I still have enough linen left over for at least one more, maybe two more projects. Next up I'm going to get to all the finishings on the apron (which will be getting its own post once it's done) and keep trucking along on the handsewn eyelets for the Lengberg Castle Bra-thing. And once those two are done, I think I just might be ready to finally start on all the dresses I want to make with my new fabric.
#sewing#tiered gathered skirt#peasant skirt#bellydance skirt#if you can sew a straight line on a sewing machine you can make this skirt#I wouldn't recommend trying to sew it by hand but it's a good beginner sewist project#the math is really easy and you can work upwards from the hem like I did or downwards from your waist measurement if you want#gathering in a 2-to-1 ratio (so the final piece is half its original width) is pretty standard but you can also do 3-to-1#bedsheets and quilting cotton are excellent options for this kind of skirt#and if you're careful with re-using hems like I did or using the finished selvedge edge of the fabric you can avoid hemming it entirely#long post#my sewing#2024 mood#linen petticoat project#linen apron project#which is actually all assembled and just needs all the hems and finishings. but that'll probably take me most of this next week I think#post on that coming eventually#and then: DRESSES

How to get Ink on Tapas
A guide for my fellow S-Class Heroine brainrotters 🫡 but which also applies for other series.
❗❗Permanently unlock chapters/episodes for (hopefully mostly) free❗❗
---
Fortune Cookie Ink
The Ink you get this way lasts ONE WEEK.
First, you'll want to get very familiar with the Inbox button which you can access on the bottom panel ①
Next, click the "Claim" (or "Get", idk) button near the top for the Fortune Cookie. This refreshes every Monday 00:00 PT.
---
Reading Missions
The Ink you get this way lasts ONE DAY.
You'll want to open the messages tab ① once a day, optimally at around 11AM PT (there's probably a range of timings, but I haven't bothered to figure it out)
② Click one of the events that are still ongoing. This should bring you to either the promo page or the series page itself.
③ Check the details of the reading mission.
In this case, I need to read 7 episodes within 1.5 days.
Chaps that are unlocked via WUF (Wait Until Free) are counted as well. (Orange WUFs refresh once every 24hrs and the blue ones once every 3hrs.) So my plan is to open the first 5 chapters, which are automatically free, and use WUF for 2 more chapters.
(BTW, you don't actually have to spend time reading the whole chapter or even scrolling to the end. Just let the chapter load and you're free to leave. Just make sure the chapters are greyed out in the series page like Chapter 6 here. Chapter 6 has been considered Read. Chapster 1-5 have not.)
Because this is an orange WUF series, I can only unlock one WUF episode once every 24hrs. So if you start the mission after 05/04/2024 00:00 you're screwed basically. This is why I tend to open my app around the time when the missions refresh (11:00 PT) so I have more leeway to unlock the 2nd WUF episode.
You do need to get a little used to the terminology Tapas uses. There are some reading missions which you can't fulfil without spending Ink. Here's an example:
Only 24hrs are given to unlock 2 episodes of <The Resourceful Little Consort>, and this series is a 24hr WUF series.
Also note the fine text:
Episodes unlocked prior to the start of the event are ineligible
UNLOCK (not Read) episodes -> this means that reading any of the first few episodes that are permanently free do not count, unlike for the first example, <I've Been Proposed to By a Villain>
So this reading mission is a bust, basically.
---
Checking Ink Expiry
① Click More ② Click Ink Shop
③ Click the (?) at the top right
④ Click transaction history
The page should look like this.
I haven't actually figured out what time exactly the ink will expire. I think it's 24hrs from when you were first awarded it and not 00:00 hours/midnight.
Also, Tapas likes to say you need to check your Inbox to "claim" the Ink, but you. you don't. It's credited to your account instantly. I think the countdown starts from the instant you open the last chapter needed to finish the mission.
---
That's all the tips I have, I think. Go forth my lieges !!
If you're coming here for some series other than the Perks of Being an S-Class Heroine, please do me a solid and check that out too, thanks. We have a very humorous girlboss female lead and an extremely wet sad and soggy perpetual regression male lead who's also really strong and has so much agency in the story and who is full of so many interesting contradictions and-- Wait actually let me just plug my propaganda post here.
Remember to turn on 1-Tap to get that 10% off when unlocking episodes. And then turn it back off so you don't accidentally spend Ink you don't intend to. (Although this is only an issue if you've bought Ink that you're trying to save. If you're perpetually running on only free Ink then you probably won't accumulate enough Ink for this tip to be useful.)

Steam 26/12/2024 Finding You Style Summary
I noticed that the past streams disappeared, so I made a summary, since 'Finding You Style' is a great topic. tell me if I missed anything.
steam 26/12/2024 Finding You Style by @kyri45
this was too long to put in an ask
kaiju heights: Wukong's 3 times bigger than Mac's, and MK is in the middle
23 panels to draw with text (spoilers)
discord stream on 30/12 (will have a post later)
50:00 finding a style
have more than 1 style (shows inst)
do you guys ask because you just starting out or someone who wants to stick to one style? it's fine to stick to one, but instead of finding one you evolved one. which is why she will show old art.
What is a style? is it how it looks or rendered? it's not technically that, it's things you don't even think of, so for them a style is a mix of preferences. like if you have long hair, it will be easier to draw long hair. it's what you see everyday, also why artist looks like their art. like for them, their friends boop their cheeks, so the art ended up being rounder You style should be how you naturally draw something
1:08:10 if you are at the start of your journey just experiment, find what's fun and easy for you.
it's fun for her to draw styles characters because you have more freedom
shows old art on inst, with character design sheet used to think about being a animator or concept artist but figured it's not for them by trying it out -shout out to leaphere on inst, also shows how every style has ups and down
shows old art from 11 grade(5 years ago), used to overlay markers in high school thought they won't be a comic artist LOL
when she tried something new, it felt like starting from squarer one. but every time her art changed little by little.
used procreate photoshop or krita
before apple pen, draw on paper take a pic and then use drawing tablet, got apple pen in 2019
lineless art 1:31:20
when did you start liking your art? this year Tells story on how they wanted to be a Vet but the teacher begged her to go to art school the point is that only this year they started to like to draw for themselves
loving what you are doing and loving art are different
tips on comics, it's ok not to know how the story will go but you MUST know how it ends and LOVE the ending, people will know if you don't know the ending. you don't need to show everything.
1:52:00 where to publish comic, tapas for normal comic pages, webtoons for strip comics or your own website, tapas is like youtube with adds so you can get money. before making money from stories you should copyright is (not lawful advice, not a lawyer). hiveworkscomics is commission base.
first time posting fanart was 17 years old, don't be afraid to draw fanart
2:26:40 who knows how the circlet work, not me
JTTW is public domain, you can just download it. right now Kyro54 is at chapter 70 in vol 2
copy right music: pressure: draper
things are meant to be used, even the nice ones, write anything even grocery

would genuinely love to see your process for sketching out your comics!! ive wanted to make my own but i have never really figured out the process and end up overwhelmed- and you're one of the folks who makes stuff in a style that I kinda draw close to, and u do ur comics with pencil and paper- so if you wouldn't mind in the future, it'd be really cool to see how you actually get everything planned :)
This ask is so cute :( probably genuinely the biggest compliment I've ever received! Well, no waiting in the future! I'll tell you now what happens behind the scenes! :)
SO FIRSTLY, I'd like to clarify I am in no way a professional or even close to one, I never even looked up how to do comics, I just kinda do them and use what I've read from DC comics and Pinterest tips.
But! Personally, I find that making comics is fun and that's what I strive on. I won't lie when I say my comics are pretty bland, the surroundings are empty and lame but I think the character's expressions and body language make up for it, and especially the script. So altogether in this post, I'll be breaking down how my comics are made!
↓↓↓ if you're interested, open up the full post!
1 - Scripting
In both dialogue and character detail/placing!
I use a notes app for when I get ideas!
* I usually don't do specific dialogue, only stating the idea and then coming up with dialogue in my head, but there are some exceptions where I do write down pre-thought-out dialogues you can see in the examples I put below!
With the idea / dialogue in tow, we can go to character detail / placing. I don't know the actual word for it but basically how the character acts in a specific scene / dialogue!
Character expression is especially important when it comes to any type of art, be it comics or animation as it can tell a story with little to no dialogue!
* panels taken from 1 and 2 for context
From here you can clearly tell their expressions well! Be sure to exaggerate!
2 - Limit planning
With Tumblr's 10 images limit, as well as Instagram if you post there, it's important to note that limit and know when to end the comic with a good panel where it doesn't feel like it's supposed to continue UNLESS you're making two parts!
I can't tell you how many times I've ruined my sketchbook papers trying to get a perfect script but I've been doing it long enough that my brain has adapted to the limit and every comic I've done since adapting had been a perfect ≤10.
But even if you decide to go with two (or maybe even more) parts, you should make sure it ends well still! Like a book! Those spaces between paragraphs and chapters and such!
Take these for examples too!
* panels taken from 1 and 2 for context
So treat it like a book! I guess ?
3 - Panel placement
This isn't a necessity, but my personal way of drawing each panel is having it scattered around randomly around my sketchbook. I don't use strips or anything like that as it restricts me because using strips on paper is a whole lot harder than on digital. Because I have such a wide area to draw, I'm less restricted from drawing any excess things I want to add in case my dialogue doesn't fit the panel or so!
4 - Draw
Now to put it all together and make the comic! I usually already have my vision in mind so I can just go draw it without a light sketch layer, but I do recommend it!
What that is is essentially a sketch but drawn like.. your pencil is hovered above the page? Like you don't press down on it or something like that. Basically a guideline! So do that if you need it, and when you're satisfied with how it looks, you can draw it! And make sure it's clear!
After that, it's just picture and post! (Make sure you crop it right tho!)
4.5 - BONUS / TIPS
When I started posting Belos drawings, I never expected it to get any attention or even end up as a whole AU 😭 I just drew him in a babygirl hoodie and people ate that shit up so now it's an AU 💀 and because of that you need to prepare personalized tags!
Tags like pitmdau or sharing caleb au ! Very very useful for navigation
More important than tags, make sure you have a Masterpost!
I'm aware mine are unfinished and very messy and I'm trying to work on that right now but it's very difficult but people really need it so when making Masterposts, YOU HAVE KEEP UP WITH IT. I slacked of for ONE POST and now it's a mess.
Also another important note you can only put 100 links in one post so you have to make more Masterposts to navigate through the comics 😭
5 - Have fun!
When getting into comic making, I think really the most important thing to keep in mind is your enjoyment in making said comics. Sometimes some things can burn you out very quickly so when you're getting into things like this, especially when you're not getting paid, you gotta make sure you have fun doing it. It doesn't matter if it doesn't get a lot of traction or not, it only matters that you are enjoying making and posting them!
I've experienced MULTIPLE burn outs from making too many comics for my TOH AUs that at some point I just completely died and lacked motivation. But what drives me into making them are other people's enjoyment! Their enjoyment gives me enjoyment which gives me motivation to make more. Someday I'll know the AUs I've created will inevitably be over, at some point, but right now I'm just having fun with the small community I've built!
So make comics, and have fun!
I hope this was helpful in any way. I just want to clarify that, again, this is my way of making comics, and you don't have to follow anything I put into the post. I'm mostly hoping this was easy to understand as well. I'm more of a visual learner so making up the words to make this was kinda hard so I'm sorry if some parts didn't make sense. If anything, feel free to hit me with another ask or a PM! I know me not posting seems like I'm inactive but I promise I check Tumblr frequently 😭
Happy posting!!! :3

Weekly Update May 10, 2024
Today was a bad day but the rest of the week was decent all things considered. I got an okay amount of work done, but I’m still really exhausted from school. It might take a bit longer to rest but I’m still trying to do stuff because I’m addicted to work.
Main thing this week was comic work, I’d say I’m 14% done, planning to be better and faster once I’m better rested, I’m going to try to do all panels on the same layer as opposed to a billion layers like before, see if it speeds things up. I’m pretty confident in the story and want to get to writing more but that’s not as high a priority as some other projects.
Music video work, OEB is about 30% boarded, it’s very exhausting to do because of adobe’s interface but it still gets done well enough when I’m in a good mood. I wanted to get making a puppet rig this week, hoping it’d go faster now that I know what I’m doing, especially since I’ve gotten basic ones done faster, but again didn’t have time due to body needing to rest and personal problems. I’ll try again next week, since it looks like work is taking longer than expected to get started back up. I’m also a lot better at rig animation in general now so it should be quicker to do too.
Other music projects, I’m very close to done on one of the two lyric batches so I’ll try to get that done this next week. I’d like to finish off the other one too but I’m very slow. Once my body is rested up enough for my brain to really work those will be the priority, then I’d like to do more. I’ll probably do another cover or so before anything else but I’d really like to do songs based around my OC stories, and maybe I will. At the very least attempting will be a nice exercise.
Other general drawings, I’m trying to figure out when I’ll have time to do more. I’m taking a fair amount of time on each of those now, which sucks since I’ll have to up my comm prices, but I don’t want to push for those until I know exactly how much to change the prices by. I’m not a professional so I don’t want to charge like one.
Anime Campaign stuff: writing my own campaign still, got a huge bite of that done, but not the part I would have wanted. Planning on seven ‘Episodes’, 1, 2, 3, and now 5 are done. I might iron out some kinks with episode 1 but I really want to get episode 4 done before anything else. Might still get some tokens done, but I don’t want to post too many, since ideally I’d like to release my campaign as a prewritten module for free, then offer the maps and tokens as a paid optional add on. Maybe. Either way I need to focus on writing more than I have been, I’ll try to use my insomnia for that.
Minor bits and bobs, music writing impulse is coming back so I’d like to make or finish a little smaller tune, but again that relies on time and OEB and comic are taking priority. If I get BMBO or BATB lyrics done I’ll get tuning a VSQX (or whatever they’re called in vocaloid 5/6) and pass that so we can figure out which voice to use and any tweaks that need to be made. If BMBO is done before BATB I might look into typography animation to see if I can throw together a video for that, since that’ll be less effort than a full video. I’m also always tempted to do a bazillion covers, but I’m not really working towards any actively. The ones I’m debating would be called SSCS, ILMC, LIS or S (again going by initials or partial initials to not say too much). I did a basic VSQX for SSCS but mostly just to test how a certain voice tuned, and I know who I want to sing it but I don’t know what to do with the instruments so I’m not planning to work on it unless inspiration really hits. I have so much desire to do things and not enough body power!
Next week priority will be comic again, I have 4 pages done and one sketched, I’ll be maybe staying up late on Sunday again so I can get a big bite done then if I’m somehow unable tomorrow. OEB is next priority, alongside lyric writing, header/newgrounds collab, then AC writing and token practice. Thanks everyone for being so patient with me not posting much, I’m so sorry I’m so slow to work on bigger projects but I really hope they’re worth it.

Heart & Soul
Our events coordinator may be a little under the weather, but we can still squeeze in something special for the 800th post. And there’s a cool element already you know, using what could be 8 & 10 for that. We won’t worry about that, you can take it as a reason to still hope or a cool element that would have just...inherently manifested by going with Kiku as your tenth at Quartermaster. If nothing else, I’m so sad we haven’t seen more of this pair. The shared “second life” element. The first bit letting it just sit there; Kiku is a rare person to not really even react to a talking skeleton just showing up and while Sanji’s smitten she’s one of the few pretty young women Brook doesn’t harass. I’ve always felt he matches tone, so it’s easier to laugh off. Gives Nami more shit than Robin because the latter has generally been nice about his...oddness.
So here’s where I long thought it’d be a cool tie though, between Thriller Bark and Wano if you look at them as recruitment arcs. It’s pretty simple. Thriller Bark and Moria are a premonition. The cost of rushing into the New World. Losing your crew and being eaten up inside to the point you lose your dreams. That pairs amazingly well with Brook, and especially Luffy finally hitting the bar of recruiting a former captain as his own star rises. Obviously Brook was a failed captain, but I think I’m on to something when Law echoes that beat in Sabaody through Jean Bart.
Kiku? It’s not an entirely different concept. Ties into Shanks a little even. Remember his now recurring gag about trying to poach Marco? That’s the only thing left for Luffy as a captain. Swaying someone with existing (earnest) loyalties. Kinda like Whitebeard did with Izo. He saw the potential immediately. Thriller Bark is all about when a captain loses the crew, and Luffy gets a musician out of it which was a big personal stamp for him since the start. If Wano ended up yielding a Quartermaster, it’d work well with it being an arc about a crew that lost their captain. Ideally it’d be a position about making them better, which fits with Kiku likely having more of an impression of Luffy as someone polite and mature than most.
Take all that and imagine how fucking cool a serious panel of Luffy going into a situation flanked by the two long, lanky figures towering over him would be...especially if you had the skeleton and the demon mask thing going on.

Back to this. I got sidetracked jumping around the spreadsheet and adding some random stuff, but hopefully I should hit the first Renee appearances tomorrow. I also have to track down a version of Death in the Family that has the foreword - it's by Tot and mentions Vic, and was mentioned in the letter column for 28, so it should fit somewhere in this chunk of issues on the spreadsheet.
Question #18
Here he is! I love Ollie and Vic's dynamic. They are so fascinating and so annoying.
You know you've fucked up when Ollie's calling you a dumbass.
I like how much breathing room this issue has. They get a lot of space to talk and highlight each other, which is a great foundation for the later GA crossovers.
Of the unsubtle 80s anti-gun GA stuff I've read (which isn't a lot but it's more than 0) this is one of the less interesting bits. At least it's short.
The panel composition on this issue is really well done. Making two guys talking in a truck into a pair of pages that make me pause to take them in is impressive.

Vic choosing to get the doll fixed is a really strong moment.
Overall, the way Augie is treated is surprisingly good? It's definitely played for creepiness at first, but he's just a guy living a surprisingly decent life for Hub City, Vic tries to actually help him and doesn't judge him for being delusional, and he ends up totally fine.
The parallel between Vic's mask and Myra's makeup, and her choice to discard it, is just. Waugh. She's just as dedicated to trying to figure out the right thing as he is, but she's not hiding any of it!
Myra kissing Maurice is still a very weird moment.
Detective Comics - Fables part 1
Spectacularly terrible opening, 0/10.
It's so weird to see the Penguin after this long of a stretch without supervillains. Yeah Talia shows up first but she's way less gimmicky and the page is pretty calm. He's here in full force with the monocle and bird jokes.
Shiva <333
I don't believe for a fucking second that asking Vic is the best way Shiva can think of to find Batman. I really like it, don't get me wrong. Vic's hacker exposition about making a post on the internet is hilarious, calling Batman Pointy-Ears is hilarious, "Matins" is such a Catholicism Moment, it's good stuff. I just think this is way less likely to work than going to Gotham and punching cops until Batman shows up.
Oh my god this is such a stupid villain plot. What do you mean it doesn't affect people with high testosterone. What do you mean Bruce already knows what it is. Why does Ra's have that. Why would that be the effect you choose for this story.
I'm sure this Bruce and Talia plot is better when read in context but it's still some excellent drama. Love them.
...gender?
Green Arrow - Fables part 2
The overarching plot of Fables isn't good, the O-Sensei is a boring Orientalist stereotype, but all of the subplots are very strong examples of why I care about each series. Scrap the whole O-Sensei thing in the first two issues and just have it be Shiva picking fights and finding people to help someone she knows and it'd be better.
Dinahollie <3
I love getting to see Shiva doing her thing. She's so chill, it's fun to see her in her element :)
Dinahshiva <3
Shiva loves to put some weird little freak in a situation and see if it makes them better or worse, and it sucks she doesn't get to do that anymore.
Question - Fables part 3
All of these issues have great looks for Shiva. Style icon.
Hey, Vic's terrible secret identity came back to bite him!
"Van der Waal's equation" isn't complete technobabble - the Van der Waal's force is a decent explanation for a multi-use adhesive, at least by comic book standards, and would explain why the mask never seems "sticky" and why the chemistry on getting it to stay is so finicky.
It's interesting that Vic doesn't even try to get Shiva to not kill people. He might be self-sacrificing, but he's not that dumb.
Oh my god Bruce you are such a dramatic bitch.
I kinda see what they were going for with the O-Sensei here, at least. Still think it'd be better if he wasn't a ridiculous legendary fighter.
Drowning motif! Shiva's perspective is so interesting - she's able to do anything she puts the effort into, and she expects that to be true of everyone else.
#20
The cover layout is unique this issue, which is a neat touch.
I always like that characters get to say stuff that's sort of dumb. Vic no-selling Myra's joke about boomerang rocks is a nice reminder that they do really like and feel comfortable around each other, even when things are rough.
Honestly not a ton to say about this issue. It makes its point well, I like it.
In the letter pages: the return of Hair Discourse.
#21
This plotline's back!
He just like me fr (misreading signals on a date, resisting the urge to deck his high school classmates)
Seriously though, it's nice to get a look into Vic's very normal problems. Not everything wrong with him is related to being the Question.
This is one of my favourite single issues. I can't quite put words on why - everything about it just works, and there's nothing about it that I want to pick at.
#22
Election Day is the best arc in the run.
The opening spread is full of excellent expressions - Wesley's really lean into the more distorted and exaggerated end of Cowan's art, while Myra's are all subtle, exhausted frustration. I appreciate that she's consistently drawn with sunken cheeks and eye bags.
Maurice getting to be serious is a strong moment. He's been a good source of banter for Myra before this, so having him get invested and take the consequences seriously is a good way to ground the stakes, and to give Myra someone who's genuinely on her side without having to rely on Vic.
It's interesting that Shiva pays close enough attention to what Vic's up to on a regular basis that she'd know who to send. Even when she's not around, she still gets to drive the story.
#23
This issue got me the first time I read it. The history flashback is a weird choice, but it sets the tone perfectly, and the time constantly being shown is a throwback to the first issue that makes it feel super tense. So much of the series has long time skips, waiting to heal or get phone calls or for anything to happen, but now every minute counts. The news reports punctuating it work so well.
Vic dropping everything when he reads Tot's name is so...
Myra goes off, and she damn well deserves it. The difference in how her expressions feel between this and the opening of #22 is a testament to Cowan's work.
The quoting of a line from five pages ago is maybe a little unnecessary. These panels would stand perfectly well on their own.
#24
It's hard to make a deus ex machina feel "earned", but if anything does, it's this.
Kind of a dumb thing but who tells this story with a beaver? I'm not losing it, right, it's the Scorpion and the Frog?
The historical flashback turning out in Myra's favor is a fantastic bit of subversion. When I first read this, I was certain that Wesley was going to shoot Myra during the blackout, and Dinsmore dying and Myra talking about how bad winning felt made me lower my guard and think he might kill himself publicly instead. Funny how that works.
I didn't catch what he meant until the next issue on my first read (in my defence, I'm not American) but wow Wesley's not subtle about his assassination plans to anyone. I mean, I caught that much, but he's really not subtle.
Myra and Vic's relationship makes me want to explode. I just want them to be happy together! Aaaaa!
#25
Everything happens so much. The pace just does not let up.
Vic falls into bad habits, again, but he does a better job staying focused and not letting the anger take over - it's good development.
Wesley's death is everything the shitty racist cop issue fails to be. He's a sad, awful little man with a broken moral compass and a lot of enablers, and he dies refusing to recognize it.
The letters column: a woman wrote in a while back about how male comic fans are creeps and Vic still has some personal growth to do when it comes to being less sexist, and some men are being freaks about it. These fuckers haven't changed in thirty years.
#26
If I ignore the part of my brain that hates this as a Riddler story and pretend he's an OC, it's a fine breather issue. Unfortunately I am bad at doing that.
Some very caricature-y guest art this issue. It's a neat look in some panels, and sometimes it's more subtle, but a lot of it is scrungled enough that I can't take what's happening seriously.
this is Vic and Tot in the car, to me
Love that Tot takes stopping Vic from self-destructing into his own hands, and that Vic bitches but doesn't do anything stupid to try and stop him.
The idea of Vic chewing out the Riddler with more difficult questions is an interesting idea, but I don't love the effect of him monologuing about a bunch of pretty standard ~deep~ questions and well known koans, and the Riddler just going "yeah i'm afraid of those" is dumb.
I dunno - it feels like a bit of a waste for the one time Vic faces an established villain to be so meh. I like Sphinx, at least, and the reappearance of the drowning motif is cool.
#27
The weirdest issue, I think.
I really like all the Vic sections, and I'm not opposed to meta shit, but this is pretty jarring. Tot's weird cousin and his racist magic is not helping the tone of the Ditko callback.
I like that Tot has a weird cousin who was a bad comic artist. He has connections outside of Vic, they're just also weird as hell.
The Ditko callback is great. "You gotta pull me up." "Why?", and then the slow drop before Vic grabs him? Mwah. Perfect. I'm a sucker for this shit. Even when he's falling into bad habits, he's still a better person than he used to be!
#28
Shiva :)
Vic responding to Tot telling him not to lie to himself by suddenly gaining sunglasses kills the mood a bit, but it's also very good. What is wrong with him.
Myra wakes up from a coma, ditches the hospital, and immediately makes a very risky plan. Good for her.
Everyone's in top form this issue, it's great.

#NameThatYear
I think I have played this game before, Google's algorithm in their Photos app creates these collages like a digital "This is Your Life", I loved the mix here so decided to see what I could remember of the origins of these images. From left to right starting at the top:
1. Twenty years ago was the last time I really dated, that was Paul and me, we dated for 4.5 years, 2003
2. 2011 I did the journey home with Museum of Contemporary African Diasporic Art, a local museum that I have also exhibited with had a ten day trip to Ghana. This was my first and last time on the continent. I hope to get back there again.
3. 1997-2000 its gotta be a range for this image of me in a shake-and-go wig for a Halloween party at my first advertising agency Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners, this was great time of my life. Young enough to be still figuring out what I wanted to do, but also getting a great foundation in marketing and advertising which would effect the rest of my working career.
4. 2013 - 2014 once again a range as I had recently had these suits made for a wedding that would be the end of a friendship and much later lead to a lawsuit with the guy who created these suits. Now that was extraneous information but top of mind, cause these suits now have a tainted history, no matter how good I look in them.
5. I think this is 2003 when my beau at the time Paul and my best friend at the time Adam took me out to a birthday dinner? at a local Brooklyn restaurant. I have written about Adam in another post here. He more than likely took this photo of me looking quite demure.
6. This tablet taken self-portrait I think was done in 2023, I had accidentally styled my hair in a way that I thought would be really photogenic. I am sitting in my window seat for this shot.
7. 2009, when my late brother was still alive this was at a monitored visit with the parents and their six children which they no longer had custody of. I am pictured with my niece Isis who I think is nineteen now. She is wear one of the animal mask I had bought to the visit. I was the only adult who thought to bring something for the children to do at these visits.
8. 2023 I think, I am trying to remember when I bought that red poncho from Ecuador, which curiously I have only worn in the house to-date. Its just like a nice shrug to throw on quickly if it gets a bit cold. I didn't realize I have clothing pieces that I have just worn in the house.
9. This might be 2022, but I could be wrong even with the same fabric panel in the back, I cycle the panels out all the time. But The Equalizer sweater came into my life in the winter I think cause I remember it was like two-hundred dollars less during the summer. Its such a statement piece this granny-square crotched turtle neck sweater.
10. I am going to guess this is like 1986 or so, and here I am photographed with my late great aunt Rose at Sunday school at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Harlem. This church was a place my grandparents were very invested in. I think I was wearing all white cause I was briefly on the usher board.
11. 1991 this I can say definitively because this was my employment photo for my work-study job at Ithaca College, I worked at the Information Desk and with the A/V crew setting up for meetings around campus.
12. Also '91 and I assure you I am not smiling, Eva Matuka one of my classmates who was also a model was standing by the photographer and assisting folks in getting better graduation shots. She did or said something to get me to laugh and get this now legendary shots of it looking like me smiling. I come from a long line of folks who don't really smile, lookin' at the rest of the images here you can see this is quite evident.
13. 1981 or '82 this is a school portrait at Uriah Hill my Elementary school in Peekskill where I was raised. Its also important to note my mom was still alive at the time of this photo. I recall I really loved that shirt I was wearing it was really soft.
14. 1998 just eyes and teeth in this no flash picture where I think I am at KB&P but the t-shirt I am wearing was from my volunteer work at the New York Peer AIDS Education Committee. There was a bit of controversy because as a part of my volunteer work I handed out condoms and did so while working at Reception. But this shot makes me think I was in the Interactive Department which I would eventually end up leading before I left the agency in two thousand.
15. 2023 December, coming back from small claims court where I was suing the tailor I had mentioned earlier in this list. This was one of the shots that Google edited to remove the color from the background.

(i have a strong suspicion that all that follows describes a cringe and infantile problem to have as an adult and can be solved by turning on brain. unfortunately i cant seem to get better on my own ->) once again tried to start reading the news yesterday only to give up as usual after a couple hours.
preamble: i think tumblr dash isn't a great way to get news (maybe ok if you follow some people for the news specifically instead of getting a stream of politics from people you followed for lovely posts and fanart) but thats the main way that i accidentally get news since i dont really use other sm. i have a long-standing ambition of finding a reasonable way of getting news daily in under half hour.
i started typing out a long ass recount of yesterdays foray but realised thats unnecessary and doesnt even help me order thoughts much. sigh. i guess i just cant figure out if its even reasonable to expect to find a couple publications i can consistently rely on.
problem uno: choice. do i try looking for something as factual and un-opinionated as possible (<- if that exists)? do i try to find a couple semi-opinionated sources from different camps? that might be better for actually having conversations and, as a layman, understanding where things might go next. but surely there aren't many pairs that have opposing views on the vast majority of issues, and im bound to eng+rus language mostly so there's bound to be overlap so how do i choooooseeee (yea yea checking forums, compiling a list, then sticking with different sources, couple at a time, 2-3 weeks each. but that would take so long and im lazy and kinda dumb and it might not even produce an answer)
dos: should i care about the discourse? on one hand im just trying to be more educated with minimal effort. i dont even talk about politics outside drunken family dinners. on the other hand doesn't reading news without interacting with other people make it akin to reading a history book? discourse is news in and of itself and wields influence is insightful yada yada. after watching a few 10-20 minute vids on yt, it seems like facts are secondary if you wanna talk to people about shit. sources + interpretation that opposing sides can agree on are few and to juice those or breach the gaps u gotta know all the talking points. will my dad care about a un news article? doubtful. will i care about a guy talking on a us news panel? barely.
tres: pg internet. primary source nerf. the news sites i checked dont even link the footage they are referring to in the articles. genuinely all i want is primary source + trustworthy notes/additional info, if necessary. maybe they have some of that on high volume sm where things simply cant be banned immediately eg twt/insta/tt but ew. it seems like the way to go is 18+ telegram war channels with the most foul aged internet vernacular. i trust long-term-online middle-aged obsessed-with-war men on telegram more than most demographics when it comes to news. i can supplement with checking tumblr tags and it'll be balanced af. can you guys ask your dads what telegram channels they are using for news? i cant seem to orient myself in the scene
so yea any help appreciated including telling me to go fuck myself
i think all war-related news should start with the most graphic content possible provided by both sides. especially interviews and debates. also speakers should be moderatly sedated. that would make things easier.
