I know the theory isnt your cup of tea but is it even possible that Dad kogane is shiro's brother ? Like from a mathematical pov ? It was also never foreshadowed that shiro has a bro in vld at all so :/
I think the reason why people talk about it sometimes is based on the idea of:
Dad Kogane that we see looks a fair bit like Shiro- presumably his eyes are more violet than gray, like Keith’s, but they have similar hair color, hairlines, jaw shape, and build- Dad Kogane is sturdier-looking than Keith.
Ryou Shirogane is a character in Voltron Defender of the Universe- or, rather, a character in GoLion who looks quite a bit like his fallen brother, who only shows up some time after the original Shiro has died.
Technically it’s possible that Shiro could have a brother old enough to have a sixteen-year-old son, but it would mean that Ryou would have to be quite a bit older than Shiro, which happens sometimes with siblings, so I wouldn’t exactly suggest it’s a counterpoint, it’d just mean Shiro was a late surprise in his family.
I did talk about it here, though, that if this theory were the case it doesn’t seem Shiro is aware of his relations to Keith, and if he were, he’d probably be very mad at Ryou for hiding this from the rest of the family.
Other than that, it’s not foreshadowed, but the only people we have more or less a comprehensive family picture of are Pidge and Lance, and Lance’s is kind of a “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” and we don’t know specifically how he relates to them, if he has a lot of siblings or is an only child with a lot of cousins or lots of siblings and cousins.
Shiro and Hunk are total unknowns for family situation. We’ve seen Keith’s dad but mom’s been only referenced and we don’t know the dead/alive status of either of them- we also don’t know anybody else who might’ve been attached there, because Keith’s parents didn’t exist in a vacuum. It’s quite possible that Keith’s mom had family among the Blade that’s still there.
My personal issues with the theory that Dad Kogane is Ryou Shirogane, which, um, got longer than I anticipated so I’m putting it under a cut:
It seems odd that Keith would come out with the name “Keith” if half his family has Japanese names and the other half of his family is galra, who have particular naming conventions of their own. I mean, it’s possible this adheres to the theory I’ve had that “Keith” is actually a mispronunciation of a galra name.
“Kogane” is Keith’s presumed surname based on other continuities but in this case, if we presume he got his surname from his parents, wouldn’t it be Shirogane? I doubt Shiro and Keith would both not say anything if Keith’s last name is also Shirogane- do galra have surnames? We’ve only heard them addressed, even in formal settings, by one name, but then again, Coran is the only nonhuman character we’ve ever heard the full name of, assuming everyone else has one. If they’re using names from GoLion, they definitely have room to add in surnames, since Zarkon, Haggar, and Lotor have different names in GoLion. So I guess you can boil all that down to “so what is Keith’s last name and who did he get it from?”
On something non-name related: neither the Empire nor the Blade are organizations you can just disappear from for nine months. There’s a real ontological problem, I think, about where Mom came from and where she went if we’re assuming that Keith was born on Earth. The series doesn’t seem interested in making the Garrison out to be like Voltron Force’s Sky Marshal Wade, that is to say, pure evil- I’ve seen people suggest Mom Kogane was dragged off to be experimented on and I just can’t buy that- but the Garrison is pretty dang responsive. It’d be very hard for them to miss a ship coming down, because I’m kind of assuming this was a crash landing, considering Mom Kogane or her ancestors didn’t just turn right the heck around and leave. Earth is basically a closed system. Unless we’re importing alien technology, there’s no real way off it and to other populated systems. If Mom Kogane crashed on Earth, overwhelmingly she’s still there. People have suggested her using the Red Lion, but Red was in imperial custody- and Mom Kogane is carrying a Marmora blade. She’s no friend of the empire. Nor was she captured by them for any long stretch of time, because the empire was only just starting to uncover the Blade towards the end of season 2, long after Mom Kogane’s time.
It’d be easier to believe if we assume Keith was born in space, but that raises the question of how Dad Kogane got there, if he’s a human. The empire’s response to Shiro and the Holts would suggest they haven’t exactly captured humans before and I doubt the Blade would also be in the business of abducting astronauts off of planets for no reason. Furthermore, there’s a timeline problem- Kerberos is explicitly the furthest human beings have been, so if Dad Kogane is a second (or, technically, first) unfortunate astronaut he’d have to have been taken off a planet further in the solar system, 17+ years ago; so the empire in the past would’ve had to have been further into their scouting of Earth’s system than they would be in the future. It makes no sense. The Blade is operating as quietly as they possibly can, having sentry ships just cavorting around the universe looking for pockets of sentient life doesn’t make much sense.
Even with the implication that Mom Kogane went down on Earth, what would she be doing in basically the middle of nowhere and who would be shooting at her? I doubt Earth has keenly developed anti-spacecraft weapons, or that she’d enter atmosphere on a populated planet alone and undisguised without making some effort to check if the locals are friendly and/or armed. There’s Leeroy Jenkins tendencies which could well run in the family, and then there’s being sloppy- which, I doubt Kolivan would tolerate in his operatives.
This is why the theory I operate on is if both of his parents are galra, and Keith was born in space and then taken to Earth- because it’s what matches up with the evidence we do see. Keith, and his dad, could look human because we know that it’s possible to use magic to cast illusions. Earth makes sense as a destination because it’s a backwater planet a very long way from the empire- it’s a great place to hide. And we would know how they got there- because the Blue Lion is on Earth, and someone very well could have come there with Blue.
We know at least one person knew where Blue was before Keith because of the paintings. It’s fair to assume Blue could have etched those carvings into the rock, but one of the images Keith shows is in color and painted onto the rock rather than etched into it.
It also seems to have a completely different art style compared to the other, very rigid etchings we see thus far- which would almost, to me, suggest it was created by a different hand. The purple string Keith’s attached to it would seem to suggest that it’s sitting right in the mouth of the cave- almost as if to mark the cave as Blue’s. I’d also say, for its crisp lines, bright colors, and lack of visible deterioration, it doesn’t look particularly ancient. Not brand new, but not “there for the last ten thousand years.”
Again, it’s unlikely the Garrison would miss a ship coming down, but I can believe Blue moving deliberately under her own power could be less noticeable than a ship crash-landing, especially with the idea that Blue might’ve immediately headed underground, and thus hiding from people who are going to come looking for whatever just came down. After all, back in s1e1 we specifically cut to Commander Iverson and someone else seeing Blue during Blue and Lance’s first flight together- which makes no sense to do if it’s not gonna be plot relevant.
So there’s something up with the Garrison and the Blue Lion, or there’s going to be.
