okay, just had the rdj as doctor doom news dropped on me via destiel meme. i have not substantially cared about the mcu in a long time but oh boy do i have some Thoughts.
first of all...rob. sweetie. honey. remember tropic thunder? the movie in which you helped viciously satirize hollywood's tendency to cast white actors as nonwhite characters? the one you got nominated for a damn oscar for??? did that not cross your mind even once when you, a white man, agreed to play a romani character whose romani heritage is a big part of his identity?
second, i'm sorry, but this feels like desperation on disney/marvel studios' part. the mcu's been on shaky ground for a while now, between all the backstage chaos and having some pretty high-profile failures on its name. there's so many actors they could've picked to be doctor doom, but they went with the safe option – the man who started the franchise, the man who fans have been begging to return – and it honestly feels like they only did that to salvage some goodwill.
tl;dr i am really not a fan of this casting choice for multiple reasons.

RE: Sundance.
It looks like indie wire had an article saying Celine’s movie wouldn’t be at Sundance because it’s not ready and more likely to attend a fall festival or Cannes.
I don’t know where the article is but I’m sure someone here can find it.
If true, I think Celine is still working on her film and if it got any mixed reactions initially, maybe she wants to rework things and etc. She seems like a perfectionist so that’s what I think. One thing I’ll say about her is that her first feature got a best picture and screenplay nom. The industry will be watching her. I don’t think her second film will go unnoticed in anyway.
Re: sacrifice. I’m more and more starting to lean into this film having some interesting outcomes when it does release. It JUST wrapped so if it does release I’m thinking later next year or even 2026. But I saw someone post the wrap announcement on the Oscar’s buzz subreddit. I’m not sure why (lol) but I think once the film finishes post you’ll start to get a better idea of where it’s going to end up. I LOVE that Anya and Chris trusted Romain’s vision. Maybe it won’t be for everyone but I am willing to bet it won’t be predictable. 😉
Honey Don’t seems like the toss up. It could go the way of drive away dolls or it could go the way of some completely different way. 🤣 Margaret Q will be busy with awards season so I wonder how that release will pan out.
Early prediction: Chris is planning to do more indie films and niche projects so if avengers doomsday is confirmed, he’s getting a big cash payout and his role won’t be as big as RDJ/doom so he can pursue his passion projects on the side. I also think he’s going to go in heavy in the niche department because the critics and audiences have spoken. They don’t want to see his potential wasted. They are basically yelling at him to go for it and I think you’re going to see some changes moving forward.
Yeah, there was a screening in September/October (it's a bit late, and I can't remember which month). And the one review that is out there it said that it was a very rough cut. Celine seems to be quite the perfectionist, which is want you want in a writer/director. I'll wait patiently for what she thinks is best. Although, I did want it to go to Sundance, so I would have had a chance to see it, oh well.
I am extremely excited about Sacrifice. The cast and crew kept us well fed on behind the scenes moments, and even provided us with some interesting aesthetic posts on what the movie could look like. Visually it will be a beautiful movie. And Romain has worked with that crew in the past. There is one photo that I haven't yet posted, and it's what the cult is going to look like. I had thought about doing somewhat of a video montage, but who knows. My life is a bit chaotic at the moment.
Honey, Don't will be interesting to say the least. He won't have a huge role in that movie, but I'm sure it'll be a scene stealing moment for him. It usually is.
I do think Chris will use his big movie moments to continue to live his comfortable lifestyle, and then do movies he's artistically more interested in. The year 2024 was him going back to those quirky and different movies.

Confession : I really want Tom to step away from Marvel & ditch Spiderman after one more movie to focus on his career (sorry MCU fans) outside Peter Parker. I've seen the talent he has The Impossible, TDATT, even TCR that him ditching Sony could do wonders for him. Look at RDJ leaving Iron Man role he won his FIRST Oscar. Him doing a play surprised me because I believed his big announcement was charity tournament. Honestly, I'm convinced he's signed to another project before filming Spiderman 4.
Honestly? I wouldn't mind Tom finishing the Spiderman saga and moving on to other things as well! I really do think he has a TON of potential that has been untapped, and Marvel has been a huge commitment for him. I love Marvel (I'm a Marvel Girl), but I wouldn't mind seeing Tom doing other things either. I have seen what leaving Marvel did for RDJ lol 😅🤣
I just think Tom has to land the right project after Spiderman. The right project with the right script, the right director, and the right genre.
I definitely feel like it's coming.... But he might have to end his Spiderman saga before we can see him land certain roles.

So, about a month ago, I read about Matthew Lawrence from Boy Meets World and several other things talking on the podcast he does with his brothers about being sexually harassed by a male director in a hotel room, and the director in question promised him a role in a Marvel movie if he took off his clothes and let the director take Polaroids.
Lawrence left the room and says his agency fired him for leaving.
In terms of how the industry treats sexual harassment victims, this is not surprising. Especially for male victims, who are expected to act like it doesn't exist for them at ALL.
Anyway, when I first read the quote, I found myself noodling on "Marvel movie" and "Oscar-winning director." Because Matthew didn't--and is not required--to name names, but also, it's such a small pool of options.
There are three Oscar winners in the MCU director pool: Chloe Zhao. Taika Watiti. Kenneth Branagh.
Chloe is off the list immediately because Matthew said it was a man.
But then Taika and Kenneth have never been accused of sexual harassment as far as a quick google search tells me.
The other thing is, Matthew Lawrence in the modern day isn't an actor that would get offered a Marvel contract by having a private meeting with a director. You have to have a certain profile, a certain amount of box office under your feet. He doesn't have that. Not a judgement on him, just a statement of fact. Chris Evans was regularly employed and liked by audiences when he got cast. Same as Mark Ruffalo. Same as Cobie Smulders and definitely the same for Samuel L. Jackson. Same for Paltrow. And even despite his many struggles, the same for RDJ. People showed up either for movies these people were in or--in Cobie's case--the tv show they were on.
Matthew Lawrence joining Boy Meets World was a BIG DEAL. He came on as Shawn's half-brother. Our favorite little meow meow now had a new nemesis/family member. This was top-tier shit.
It was 1997.
In August 1995, The Usual Suspects came out. It won 2 Oscars. It was directed by Bryan Singer. The first X-Men movie came out in 2000.
Bryan Singer didn't win an Oscar for Usual Suspects, but the movie he is heralded for directing DID win two Oscars. Bryan Singer didn't direct an MCU movie, but he directed a movie from Marvel comics.
And this is Matthew Lawrence in the timeframe that he was gaining attention for his role in Boy Meets World and the time Singer would have been casting for Cyclops:
Tumblr media
Bryan Singer has a long, awful history of being a sexual harasser at BEST and a sexual abuser at worst. While his reputation catching up with him around the time he failed to direct Bohemian Rhapsody seems to have finally derailed his career, he was literally untouchable for decades as he preyed on very young men.
To call him an open secret doesn't do it justice, okay.
I can't stress enough: NAMING BRYAN SINGER IS BASED ON ME KNOWING ENOUGH SHIT TO DRAW A LINE. MATTHEW LAWRENCE HAS NOT NAMED HIS HARASSER AND SHOULD NOT BE FORCED TO DO SO. YOU WANNA HAVE THOUGHTS ON THIS TAKE, IT'S MY TAKE. LEAVE MATTHEW OUT OF IT.

I'm not a troll and I don't want to offend anyone, but why do anons think that Marvel actors are best friends in real life? Why should Tom root for RDJ and not Deniro? Because they played in the same franchise and hugged during the promo? So he and Deniro sat on the same sofa, and Tom even imitated him. I readily believe that Tom was rooting for Mark Ruffalo, because Mark is a very kind and good person who once supported Tom in difficult times. But I don’t believe in this Marvel friendship, and an example of this is the relationship between Tom and Chris. Tom does not communicate with anyone from Marvel (except for Charlie Cox), his real friends are in no way connected with the franchise. Sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone.
You don’t have to apologize for your opinion just because it may differ from someone else’s, let’s start there. I would imagine that you can understand that knowing someone personally means a little bit more than meeting someone one time. Also RDJ was great in that film, the obvious front runner, and it was his first Oscar.

Scattered thoughts on Oppenheimer (2023)
Tumblr media
First, Cillian Murphy is INSANELY good as the titular character. There's a Shakespearean ambiance to the way he plays the part: he's arrogant and flawed, but also conflicted about his role in the creation of a weapon that might destroy the world. Every single moment felt so genuine.
That's not to say the rest of the cast was lacking. With the exception of a weirdly hammy Gary Oldman as President Truman, everyone was fantastic, with RDJ as the standout. My only disappointment is that Florence Pugh and Emily Blunt didn't get much to do. Their relationships with Oppenheimer aren't quite as developed as I would have liked. They're both good with what screentime they have at least, particularly Blunt.
The visuals are spectacular-- not just the explosive stuff but also the way Christopher Nolan uses shallow focus during some of the more psychologically intense scenes. I'm thinking of the scene where Oppenheimer tries giving a speech after the bombs are dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki: it's like he's trying to rouse his patriotism, but the horror of what's been unleashed prevents him from sharing in the communal joy around him.
However, there were a few things I didn't like. First, the score. It was fine in and of itself, but I hated how relentless it was. A lot of the scenes involve people talking and the score just pounds away beneath all of it, even when the scene itself is lowkey. Nolan almost NEVER lets the scene just play out without the music. It drove me nuts.
Red Letter Media's review of Oppenheimer discussed that too, and they made a little parody trailer of 12 Angry Men with that annoying ass music under it just to show how out of place it is:
youtube
Second, while I was glad the movie never dragged, it also felt like all the action was playing in fast-forward-- like I was watching a clip show from the middle of a long-running TV show. The movie never takes time to breathe.
Also, if you aren't intimate with the history being portrayed, the action can be a little tough to follow. I read the basics on Oppenheimer's life yesterday and I think if I hadn't, I would have been confused at points.
Overall, this is a pretty good biopic, well-acted and beautifully shot. I'm sure it will snag some Oscars. However, I did think it fell short of being a great movie and tbh that might be the result of the pre-release hype for me.
7.5/10

Saw you share that Cillian Murphy post and say you saw Oppenheimer - what were your thoughts on it? Also, did you see it in theatres/IMAX or just at home?
Personally I saw it twice - in IMAX on opening weekend and later with my mom in a normal theatre - and I remember just kinda feeling simultaneously empty and overwhelmed after the first viewing. Felt like I just needed to sit outside and let it wash over me for a bit.
Also, speaking of movies and the fact it’s Oscar season: have you seen Killers of the Flower Moon? Feels like something you’d find interesting.
Argh sorry for taking so long to answer this, but I was like, "Ah, I'll watch Killers of the Flower Moon and then I'll answer this :3" but I STILL haven't seen Killers of the Flower Moon and it's *totally* on my list but it's also 3 hours and kind of depressing so it's tough to set a time aside for it. Ironically I was able to get my fam to watch Oppenheimer, which means I've watched Oppenheimer twice now (AND YES THE NONLINEAR STORYTELLING HITS SO GOOD ON THE SECOND WATCH). I've had to watch it at home both times though. I wish I could have seen it in theaters---I want that sensory assault SO BAD.
But yeah overall I really love the composition of it--it takes you a minute to understand that the use of color is meant to indicate the differences in perspective, but again, it's really obvious on the second watch so you're able to pick up so much more.
Both times I rolled my eyes SO HARD at the framing of the "I am become death" quote because... I mean... really? It's just such a wanky part in SO many contexts.
I do think like, there's A LOT of people involved and like... I feel like the Chevalier incident, even if it was this very important indicting event for Oppenheimer, was kind of clumsily handled--because like, you just have Chevalier as a guy at this party but then it's like "Oh this is a guy Oppie trusts enough to leave his kid with for a few days" but also it isn't clear enough to the viewer that this *is* Chevalier until it's all "Chevalier Chevalier Chevalier" at the security clearance hearing. And I think that's partially to drive home the fact that from Oppenheimer's perspective, a lot of card-carrying communists of the day were just... friends and coworkers, but you as the viewer are stuck going, "Wait, who???"
I thought Emily Blunt was stunning and it's a very complex role--it's a movie that's very aware of its own marginalization of women as it's happening, and I'm glad that you have this moment at the end where she's the one who holds onto the rage and the grudges, almost not just on Oppenheimer's behalf, but her own--like she's just as frustrated at Oppenheimer playing the martyr.
I was getting MAJOR Stanley Tucci vibes with RDJ in that movie, but he also just had a very good simmering darkness to him. I LOVED Ryan Gosling's Ken but I think in terms of like, full-on transformation rather than just riding the high of being a character, I'd pick Robert Downey Jr. for best supporting actor for the Oscars this year. But also I still need to see Poor Things so... *shrug*
Also Jack Quaid as Richard Feynman had me like "My boy!!! That's my boy!!!" And I loved Rami Malek as well.

Basically that he’s a star, but not currently a big enough star to be invited this year. He also isn’t very fashion forward. I’m not saying he dresses poorly, but he basically falls inline with trends after they’ve started and sticks to basic looks vs. jumping into a risky look fashion wise. I think some people forget that the Met Gala isn’t an open invitation for celebrities and it’s actual kind of hard to land an invite 🦎////
I i could just add to that. He is filming now and we only saw him for the first time yesterday after he was in Chicago, so he obviously wasn't in NY until recently. So i doubt he would have time to go to the met gala on monday when he is in the middle of filming. Also yes just like you said, he isn't exactly knows for his big fashion statement. And he isn't that hot at the moment (i don't mean physically i mean as hot news). Rdj just won an oscar so of course people are talking about him right now, and Hemsworth also has a movie coming out and a bunch of things and he's always busy. But right now therr aren't any big news innthe industry when it comes to chris. Yes he is doing movies and he has red one coming up but not every actor doing movies is getting invited. And when it comes to alba (cuz i assume if he's going she is going too) we could say the same things about her. Yes she does dress beautifully but again not met gala worthy imo.
Agreed 🦎

*Evie gets controversial again* fair warning
Chris Evans: i just wanna smoke weed and look at pretty trees. Captain America gave me enough cash for life that i can provide for my family and not have to worry about anything. Stop bringing me up, Anthony Mackie is Captain America now !
Also Chris Evans: *keeps showing up to comic cons like every other month to make a quick cash grab (that he doesn’t need) and answer questions about being captain america*🤡
Like I’m so confused, is he not embarrassed😭 none of the other big avengers still be doing that shit I-
He’s like that kid that graduated high school and yet keeps coming back a year or two later to visit and everyone’s like why tf are u here ??
I understand the aspect of him wanting to meet and interact with marvel fans in a (mostly) safe way, but other than that, I rlly don’t see the point of why he attends these things anymore. It gives me such second hand embarrassment lol. Like compared to his former peers…RDJ is about to win an Oscar, Scarlett is working on her first major directorial debut, Ruffalo also nominated for an Oscar this year, even hemsworth got his own shit going on. Chris I’m begging you to do more stuff like defending Jacob, that was so damn good. I feel like that series didn’t do as well/wasn’t as successful as he expected so he just went back to relying on the same old corny action crap and being “Captain America”.
Also side note, idek why he’d still want to meet his fans like that, considering so many of them are kinda crazy and straight up mean to his wife😭
Anyway, suffice to say I miss his dj and knives out days.🫠 what a time to be a fan of him, rip lol.

'Robert Downey Jr. picks Oppenheimer as the best film he has been a part of. In the middle of his Hollywood resurgence, Downey Jr. landed his most prominent role thus far when he was cast as Tony Stark in Jon Favreau's Iron Man. More than a decade and 10 films later, he retired from Marvel and is now embarking on his post-MCU career.
Downey Jr. now plays Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, which the actor also chooses as the best film he has ever been a part of. He made this bold claim during the movie's UK premiere red carpet event (via Deadline). Read his full quote below:
“Just gonna flat out say it, this is the best film I’ve ever been in and I cannot wait for you all to experience it.”
After the red carpet event for Oppenheimer, however, the whole cast left the premiere in solidarity with the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, which aims to get actors fair and appropriate wages. The screening still continued, with Nolan explaining why Downey Jr. and the rest of the ensemble weren't on stage with him.
Why Oppenheimer Is Critical For RDJ’s Post-MCU Career
During Downey Jr.'s decade-long stint in the MCU, he barely worked on any other movie outside the franchise. He starred in the Sherlock Holmes films and even made a cameo in Favreau's Chef, but his time was mostly focused on playing Iron Man. This helped in ensuring that Stark has one of the best overarching personal narratives in the MCU, but it also stereotyped Downey Jr. into that role — something that Nolan was apparently intent on opposing via Oppenheimer.
It has been more than four years since Downey Jr. ended his time in the MCU. He has dabbled in a couple of other projects after coming out of the Marvel bubble. However, Oppenheimer is arguably the most critical project of his post-MCU career. It could prove whether he can continue to stand out without the armor of playing Iron Man. There is no doubt about Downey Jr.'s talent, but the actor himself has admitted that he has had fears that being in the MCU would have ruined his acting capabilities simply because he was playing the same role over and over again.
For what it's worth, Downey Jr. has a string of other great projects outside of the MCU. Long before he was cast as Iron Man, he got his first Oscar nod in Richard Attenborough's Chaplin from 1992. He got another nomination via Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder. It remains to be seen if Oppenheimer can give Downey Jr. one more, but he's already considering it a huge success within his long and varied career.'

I watched the first half of Oppenheimer last night and…IDK if you seen it or know what happened, but so far nobody is giving me anything remotely Oscar worthy. Maybe when I finish I’ll have a different opinion but I sometimes feel these Oscar bait movies really get overly blown and it’s starting to show more and more. Just my opinion but movies and acting are seriously a subjective art form so yeah.
I’m usually a Chris nolan fan but I really think cillian and especially RDJ are being overhyped.
RDJ…a supporting Oscar nom? I personally enjoy Robert as a person/personality and I think he’s very witty and charming, but I really don’t know where this is coming from because so far, he acts exactly the same he always acts. Why are people constantly hyping this man’s acting up?
(Also I think the constant hyping him up is putting unfair comparisons on the other OG marvel avengers.)
I haven’t watched Oppenheimer, but I do intend to.
RDJ is an excellent actor, and sometimes you have the legacy of your career to back up a campaign. I haven’t seen this movie so I can’t talk about his performance. But I have seen enough of his work, he deserves the accolades he gets.
This is also an Oscar baiting movie. They knew what they were going for when they made it.

this is exactly why i want tom to distance himself from the MCU so that people in the industry take him seriously. even RDJ is joking about it himself. https://www.tumblr.com/artsimpourtzi/742688904767045632/i-love-him?source=share
First off.... Wow! Congrats to Robert!! 👏🏾👏🏾
Tumblr media
Let me tell you... Robert Downey Jr is coming for that OSCAR hunny!! In fact, I def think he's gonna win it.... hands down lol 😆
Anyway....
I think it's good to make sure we know the context of someone's words, and even the vocal tone. Here's the video:
youtube
I don't think Robert was putting down Marvel or the MCU, or sharing any regret for having played Ironman for 10 years.... 🤔
And let's be honest, those Ironman and Avengers movies made RDJ BANK okay?? Like, dude was on the original great contracts so he was getting paid so many millions of dollars just to show up even in Tom's Spiderman HOCO movie for like a few mins of screen time. 😏 So he can only hate Marvel but SO much lol.
RDJ is a jokester, so I think his words were very tongue-in-cheek. I also don't think that Hollywood wasn't taking him "seriously" (Robert has been acting since he was a kid, and has been in the industry for DECADES lol), but perhaps he wanted to do more in his career? 🤷🏾‍♀️
I can def see how playing one character for over a decade can start to feel stifling. Come to think of it, maybe he wanted to be killed off instead of "riding off into the sunset" lol 😆 😂
Same thing like Daniel Craig. He wanted his Bond KILLED off, coz he knew that if they kept his character alive, it would leave the door open for them to ask him back, and he was DONE rofl 🤣
Re: Tom....
I really don't know how Tom personally feels honestly. I kinda get the impression that he doesn't want to say too much and burn any bridges, but at the same time, I DO kinda feel like he would like to do OTHER things in his career other than playing Spiderman his whole life. 🤷🏾‍♀️
But I'm not going to assume I know what he's thinking when he's always spoken nothing but GREAT things about the character and playing in those movies. Again, idk how much is really him, and how much is him just being nice about it cuz he's still negotiating with Sony and Disney atm.... ykwim? 🤷🏾‍♀️
All I know is, he seems ready to walk out if they don't come to a firm resolution on the franchise, which is a far cry from him crying and begging Bob Iger to keep Spiderman in the MCU years ago lol 🤭😅
So yea.... maybe he's kinda done with it as well, but he still enjoys playing the character (it seems genuinely fun for him), plus, he gets to work with his gf for months on end lol 😏
It might just be "complicated" for him? Conflicting emotions I mean. But I'm not going to assume the worst if he himself hasn't said that, ykwim? 🤷🏾‍♀️
