I often shart on my art so I'mma be positive today and do the top 10 pieces of my art that I'm still fond of despite them being quite old
Most (all) of them are redacted fanart so behold
(sorted from oldest to latest)
Tumblr media
Felt the need to put the first drawing I ever posted on this account. It doesn't stand out as being that much better than it's close by in date brethren but it still pops off in it's own right and is not nearly as embarrassing as it could've been as a first drawing (ps: it was based of a drawing by @febreze-bottle-without-febreze!)
Tumblr media
I already reblogged this one pointing out how it lowkey served for it's time but it still deserves to be said
Like this piece specifically points out how drawings don't have to be hella detailed and have 100% effort put into them to look good. Like it obviously has its flaws but it's serves it's purpose and I honestly think that overhauling with full rendering and a detailed background would've removed some of it's charm
It kind of reminds me of those semi animations/animatics people would do for musicals and things with the desaturated background with a gradient and minimal shading
Tumblr media
This one's is not much again but it's Adam and he's serving cunt so it ended up here. If you can find the Pinterest pose I used as a ref for this one you win a Gatorade
Tumblr media
It's not much artistically, like I feel like the shading is lacking in places (like either the contrast is shit or the color combos for the shading are shart I can't tell) and there's some anatomical mistakes but I feel like it's iconic in it's own way and I luuuv starlight and Avior
Tumblr media
This Gavin doodle is lowkey giving idk there's something about him...
He has no forehead but shhhh look at him 💞
Tumblr media
Another Adam Jessup slay I think about this drawing a lot like can I ever truly replicate the face card in this piece?
He caused a motherquake measuring 9.9 on the cunter scale with this...
Tumblr media
This is strange cuz like it's a ref sheet and usually ref sheets are my most meh art because I have a compulsion to do them but they're always a pain in the ass to do so like?
Even though Taurus is one of my more ignored redacted ocs I still like his design and I think this drawing still holds up
Tumblr media
Rip veguh💔💔💔 it's like I can still hear his voice 🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️
Anyways idk this one eats noticably, again kinda sad considering it's an another low effort doodle
Tumblr media
Scorpius mentioned yeesdddss
I remember not being sure wether or not to post it but it's kinda nice looking considering even though I am knida at this point known the Scorpius artists I don't like most of my Scorpius drawings
Tumblr media
And this one is pretty recent but careless avior and starlight doodles! Again why is this post just telling me that I should give up fully coloring rendering and just doodle for the rest of my life
I saw a tiktok of a person who animated some greek god related stuff and got hated on because they didn't make the ichor gold and they explained why that was but I totally get them bc when I drew the scene of Starlight and Avior bathing in liquid gold people immediately said it looked like piss💔💔

I read all Captive Prince in 2018 (2017?), re-read it last year and I'm finally posting my first public "fanart" that is actually not what I planned to do (there's a scene in book 2 that is just *chef kiss* cant wait to be able to draw it) Both are heavily referenced from those nice doodle-bases and poses easily found on pinterest from korean twitter accounts 👌✨ (and both are from events after the main story is concluded, esp the first one "woken up from a nightmare", but not necessarily correlated) (Please read this saga only if you're 18+, and look up online for trigger warnings cause there is some heavy stuff in this story)

I know practicing is the best way to improve art, but is there anything you have/do to improve besides just general practicing? Any routines or exercises that have helped?
oh yes!! how funny i was talking to people about this last night. these things are invaluable to me as a self taught artist. these are things i do when i feel “stuck”
every drawing is a good drawing! a small mantra, something i remind myself every day to get me through low periods. i say/use this a lot.
going back to basics. that means anatomy, shapes, musculature… i never had an art class in my life that taught me how to do these things, i learned from books and emulation. line-of-action.com is a pretty nice place to go for some free life-drawing poses to get you started, i’ve even tried the timed class style ones and you’d be amazed at how long a minute feels after doing 30 second life drawings!! but you could find poses anywhere, timed and not, clothed or nude- pinterest, deviantart, tumblr. i will also draw random hands and feet and legs and butts and whatever else if i feel too tired to draw a whole body. learning anatomy will save you from a lot of heartache later on, and it’s never too late to learn it. it sounds boring, but i find human anatomy so interesting and fun… either way, it must be done! even if you’ve already been through that sort of thing in your classes, brushing up and going over the same material is always beneficial.
here’s a whoooole guide that breaks down anatomy over on DA! you don’t have to copy or master this to a tee at all. it’s a learning too, so practice in small doses until you’re comfortable enough to move on. (Again… I draw random body parts sometimes… just cause it’s fun.)
body shapes and simplification. knowing musculature and anatomy is very important, but starting from something simple to acquaint yourself with bodytypes that don’t come naturally to you is a lot easier to swallow. it is also the fastest way to learn how to do more diverse bodytypes. here’s a quick rundown for some starter shapes! (ignore the gendering and so on…)
gestures, line of motion. anatomy is one thing, but making it look alive and dynamic and not stiff is another. sweeping motions, lines of action, and gesture are SO important into creating more vibrant work. one way to practice this is to draw a line or a squiggle- that is your line of motion, your gesture- and make a pose based on it.here and here are a few good visual examples of this
drawing with pen. this sounds scary, but the point is to mess up. yes. you WANT to scribble poses and bodies. those two points above are best done, at least for me, in pen- especially for someone like me, who was very scared of blank paper and messing up. drawing in pen makes you more confident in your lines. it’s not meant to be remotely pretty- it’s teaching your brain to apply the gestures and block out the major shapes of the body! draw in different color pens for added enjoyment!!!
draw small when practicing. actually, tiny doodles in pen of messy likenesses of a person’s body or a little landscape are much less daunting to me. i can blow it up bigger gradually if i want to, but for practice sake i like smaller scale areas. i can cram it with so many drawings that way 8)
I mean… these are all things i do a lot to help me better my understanding of characters, but this could also apply to learning how to draw objects (furniture, rooms, buildings) or landscapes (trees, bodies of water, etc)
idk if this exactly what you’re looking for, but i just… i really find these tips useful when i feel like… super art blocked, stiff/rusty, or emotionally low because i don’t have energy to draw something bigger. it’s a great way to loosen up and i really should do it more!
actually, gimme a minute, i’m gonna post some pictures of this stuff.
edit: heeeree it is!

I did a little bit of background practice yesterday. I usually forget that I could be drawing scenery and stuff so I’m kinda rough at it. It took like three tries to get the results of that first picture (second picture was one of those tries, and I’m not even showing the other one it was really bad 💀💀💀)
Also just throwing in some other doodles cause yeah :3. Simon. Some of these are from the same page and some of these are ones I think I forgot to post a bit ago so if there’s repeats then eh whatever lol. Explanations under a cut :)
This is pretty much just a study of a photo of a graveyard I ran into on Pinterest. Liminal spaces are very nice for finding background references because you can be sure no one is gonna be in them and they have the weird vibe that The Guy™️ should be in. But holy HELL trees are HARD. Like obviously I know what a tree looks like but the second I have to draw branches trees suddenly do not make sense anymore 💀
Another liminal space, this one was a path with the sky completely blacked out. I tried putting Simon into it but he kinda ended up a little muddled and too small augh. I’m also not very great at combining people and backgrounds so uh yeah. This one was also a much faster doodle just trying to warm up for the first one. But eh it’s cool idk. I need to put him in more liminal spaces or like try to draw the Simon’s Quest areas in 3D eventually.
Small practice comic! There’s no words, Simon just kinda walks a bit and passes out. I was gonna have more things happen but I didn’t have the room for it and decided to just leave it as a little practical piece. He’s probably gonna get up in a little bit and freak out about how much time he wasted.
Just a Simon head :3. His hair is fun to draw! I usually end up simplifying things as like a little uh polygonal… I think that’s the word… When drawing skulls, I usually go for octagons instead of circles because that’s much easier, but that ends up bleeding into how I draw hair making it kinda spikey and pointy in some spots on the top. I feel like I draw pretty inconsistently, but he’s very pretty and fun to draw regardless of how he ends up :3
This is some weird ass fan art of two things that aren’t related at all lmao. Sometimes you gotta crossover things that don’t make sense for the fun of it. This is Simon drawn based on a scene from the Fear Garden music video! Fear Garden is a banger, shout out to Chaa fr, it’s a vocaloid song about a girl who has a weird obsession with hands (Kira joke lol) and kills people to plant their hands in her secret garden where she treats them like flowers. Yeah, again it makes no sense, but the pose with the two mirrored characters was really cool and idk the vibes were there—
Simon sitting in between two graves, both say “BELMONT” in big letters, but one is for Christopher and Cyncia and the other is for Soleil and whoever his significant other was, we don’t have a name so it’s cut off. This has me thinking about the time in between all these characters hmm. Doing the math, Soliel would’ve been in his 90s when Simon was born, so there’s actually a good chance he wasn’t Simon’s grandfather, rather his great grandfather :O. Which means that there’s two generations we know nothing about between these two. And also that Simon would’ve never met either Soleil or Christopher or Cyncia :(. Then that has me thinking about fan comic stuff and how I’m gonna depict Simon hmmmmmmm. I imagine Simon spent a lot of time in the family graveyard tbh.
Simon is totally me when I dramatically collapse on a large marble monument of some sort in the graveyard— There’s also a couple attempts at drawing his paldrons at different angles but aaaa I can’t visualize these things properly. They’re just like kinda flared half ovals, why are they so hard to draw at any angle but like head on and top view 💀💀💀??? I’m trying to get out of the habit of drawing them bent in angles that don’t make sense but argggggg it’s hard lol.
Yeah, recent doodles tho yippie d(^^ )!
