aaAa I'm super curious because I luv dn and have kinda cycled around who is my favorite character for years but Ryuk has never had a turn so whAT are some things that u admire abt his character ??
{ if you’re looking for ryuk worship you have come to the right place friend.
ryuk is such a wonderful character. you will probably come to realise that I am extremely analytical about my muses so prepare for a very full response.
I can’t say I admire him as such ?? because if you think about it, ryuk is the underlying cause of one of, if not the biggest murder cases ever. so many people were killed in death note and it was all because ryuk was bored. granted, they were mostly considered “sinners,” but putting that aside - countless lives were taken because ryuk wanted amusement. I admire the dynamic behind his manipulations and thought process ?? because I find it fascinating, but I could never admire his morals or intentions. ryuk is a death god and therefore has this “otherworldly” presence. this isn’t necessarily represented by how others see him, for example, light doesn’t suck up to him or anything like that. he’s not worshipped, not prayed to. his presence is communicated fantastically however, through his perception of the world. I’ve seen some snippets of the musical and how ryuk refers to mankind as “little ants,” so small and insignificant, encouraging rem to “look at how they crawl around upon the ground.”
he finds humans interesting and entertaining because they play themselves out to be such a superior species and in ryuk’s eyes, he’s above them and they aren’t even aware of it. they tear each other apart and sell each other out and hurt each other. they live what ryuk considers to be a short life and the entirety of it they spend asking why and how they blame fate so often and depend so much on things such as heaven. there’s also the concept of him seeing them as mere tools to expand his lifespan. I also love the concept of jealousy ?? humans have so much drama going on in their lives while ryuk and his fellow shinigamis are eternally bored and the humans don’t even realise how lucky they are !! they get worked up and emotional over the drama rather than simply enjoying it and it’s something he doesn’t understand. it’s jealousy - not that he knew the name of it - that lured him down to the human world. he wanted to experience it first hand rather than spying on them from the portal pools.
ryuk refers to himself as a spectator, which I especially love. he doesn’t at all get involved with the people he meets. to him, they are mere entertainment. but that’s not even a trait of shinigami. take rem for example, who lives to protect misa and even dies for her. rem is such a fantastic character, developing feelings for misa and having a more gentle and considerate personality, then you’ve got ryuk. when light threatens to kill misa, rem threatens that she will kill light which of course freaks light out and instead of defending light like rem did with misa, ryuk simply sits back - observing, whilst chuckling about it. he’s not emotionally invested in light. and when rem states that she developed feelings for misa, ryuk actually almost scoffs saying “but you’re a shinigami !!” as if rem’s actions were below them and that she was, in a way, disgracing the title. the shinigami also talk about ryuk as some form of a disgrace due to him being bonded to light. he’s disgracing them but ryuk ?? he doesn’t care. he’s got no “the others will be ashamed of me” or anything like that. no complicated emotions. no, ryuk is indulging himself, satiating his boredom. he doesn’t care about anyone else’s opinion. he’s got literally no lacking in self confidence. he’s spent thousands of years listening to the other shinigami mocking him, making jokes about him - but he never appears to be affected by this.
ryuk actually wrote down other shinigamis’ names which led to the discovery that they weren’t able to kill one another. but the fact that he went through with this reveals that he doesn’t have friends in the shinigami realm. he doesn’t care about them. perhaps he attempted this out of boredom and wanted to satisfy his enthusiasm for killing. it could’ve been out of hatred or spite towards other particularly nasty shinigami, but I believe it to have been a way of giving himself some mental stimulation.
being a shinigami brought him up to know only boredom and amusement. those were the only two emotions he was aware of. sure, he felt other emotions and is entirely capable of such, but at that time before he’d ever considered manipulating the human world he was bored all the time, feeling only amusement when humans died - in turn causing him to feel nothing but amusement towards human misfortune, naturally. he doesn’t want to simply waste away like the other shinigami though, pointless and meaningless. this is the great thing though, he’s literally polar opposites with light which is what makes it so brilliant. he’s like light’s shadow. light wants his presence to be known for the greater good, whereas ryuk just wants some form of a purpose. he doesn’t come down to the human world to become known, but in the long run some shinigami view him as a legend for causing what he did. along the road, kira teaches ryuk about justice and how to properly enforce it. turns ryuk into a more positive thinker. ryuk even states how he notices kira is a positive thinker due to him suggesting he takes what he’s learnt in the human world back to the shinigami realm to improve it.
during the anime, light and ryuk grow a stronger bond and light relies on ryuk a lot more than he does at the start. but really, they’re both just manipulating each other so that they stay on each others’ good side. ryuk manipulates light by using his boredom. if light becomes boring, he can just kill him, and so this pushes light to keep ryuk entertained. light manipulates ryuk by both entertaining him so that he may remain alive but also things like he tells ryuk to check for people trailing him in exchange for an apple. he also manipulates ryuk into finding the hidden cameras otherwise no apples.
ryuk also admits to light that he thinks the note book couldn’t have been picked up by a better person, and he is actually very encouraging and eager towards light’s plan. he’s fascinated that light thinks he can actually rule a “new world” by killing off the bad, when of course ryuk’s perception is that humans will always do bad things. their species always makes mistakes. if this could possibly be solved it would’ve been some time ago with the law systems etc, but even that wasn’t enough. because humans never change. but even so, light is providing him with entertainment and ryuk gets a kick out of seeing human misfortune and he’s actually somewhat rooting for light. that is until light is found out by near, the task force and co and actually puts on a significantly pathetic display, leading to ryuk writing down his name because it’s no longer entertaining, and the idea of being stuck with light for a life sentence is extremely boring so he just ends it there and then. without mercy, too. he doesn’t care. he’s vaguely sentimental over how interesting the experience had been but nothing more. he doesn’t care about light. isn’t emotionally invested in him. every time light’s been in dangerous moments, ryuk’s just been in the back laughing or asking him “uh oh, what are you gonna do now?” practically goading him on.
ryuk is just so very self involved. he’s described as lazy but it’s literally just him manipulating others for his own gain. ryuk is a good example of lawful evil. it’s like humans sitting down to watch actors on tv causing drama. watching other humans suffering and learning. ryuk is constantly calling the human race interesting. so much fun. the whole ordeal to him is just a game. a lot of people ??? seem to see him as unintelligent ?? as if he’s intellectually incompatible in regards to being light’s shinigami ?? but for an entity that rarely ever speaks to others and doesn’t indulge in the daily brain stimulation that humans do, it’s no surprise he’s a little behind. but at the same time, ryuk is freakin’ smart. like he duped the KING of the shinigamis about his book. I’m certain that’s not something easy to do. ryuk is sharp tongued, he is unbelievably smart when it comes to manipulating others and goading them on. he knows how to get under someone’s skin. but at the same time, things that involve hard work and genuine brain power, he’s a little slow because he’s never had an intellectual being to talk to. shinigami either sleep, gamble or sit around in silence. there’s no brain stimulation. so the times ryuk actually went down to the human world, he’d probably learn a lot down there and then come back up to the shinigami realm and just sit and think. he sits up on his rock which allows him to overhear other’s conversations and tunes into the human world from the pools every so often but he mainly just sits and internally communicates with himself so he can go over the things he’s learnt to ensure he doesn’t just forget.
when he eats his first apple he asks for the best way to describe it and then uses the word “juicy??” seeming to question if he used the word correctly. he’s obviously heard a human use the word juicy before and asked for its meaning because why would he know the meaning of it ?? there’s nothing juicy in the shinigami realm. it’s all sand-tasting and rotten. it’s ironic, but in a way, the human race is more privileged than the gods. sure, death gods, but still gods. ryuk isn’t stupid. he has the ability to be a genius, it’s simply that he’s had no access to the resources that make one smart. without being taught by others or information in books / on the internet, light wouldn’t be as smart as he is. you have to receive information in order to learn, and if you aren’t receiving any, how are you supposed to ??
the whole “self involved” thing is also shown through ryuk’s impatience. in the netflix movie you’ve got light turner asking all these questions about the death note and about the rules and warnings and ryuk actually gets frustrated because this isn’t interesting for him !! he came for entertainment and instead he’s just bored. they don’t show it much in the movie because it’d be good character development why would they want to show that ( sense the salty sarcasm ) ???? but in the anime ryuk asks so many questions. where are we going, where are you going, what are you doing, what is this, what is that, how are you going to do that, when is that happening, how are you going to kill them, are you going to kill someone, what’s that for - it’s ENDLESS. he’s constantly looking to improve his own knowledge on the situation. keep himself in the loop because it’s mental stimulation for him, but as soon as people want to know something from him he doesn’t have an answer or doesn’t want to answer because that’d be boring for him. only when he’s gaining is he a somewhat friendly character.
light is also a whole new thing to ryuk. any human he’s been bonded to in the past hasn’t been nearly as interesting as light. the boy is just fascinating, whether it be with his knowledge or his perception of the world or how he sees others. his perception of justice and his thoughts and beliefs and the way he hides his emotions and quickly becomes more of a megalomaniac with his psychopathic laughter and easy deceits. ryuk is particularly interested when light lies to naomi multiple times and ryuk says “you make it look easy”. he thoroughly enjoys the way light’s mind works. he’s an extremely opinionated character but holds back on giving too much of it to light as he doesn’t want to influence light too much. he’s not on either side and he’s not going to support or assist either side. he wants to sit back and watch the game take place.
I also thought about how there’s no moral dilemma for him. I mentioned at the beginning how he was the underlying cause of it all, but he doesn’t have that to hurt his conscience. if you think about it in ryuk’s shoes he simply dropped the death note. that’s all he did. he didn’t tell anyone to pick it up, therefore he’s got no real moral obligation to feel guilty about anything. he just drops the notebook and let’s things kick off. in the netflix film ryuk is a force of peer pressure, handing light the book and a pen but he doesn’t force light to write anything down, light chooses to do that himself. ryuk is just the starting provider and from then on he’s just a witness. a spectator, nothing more.
I could go on FOREVER ok. ryuk is such an underrated character but there is SO MUCH to him and I thrive off of him okay. he’s literally there for himself and no one else. I found that, when I first watched death note, I felt similar to ryuk ?? in terms of being a spectator. I personally didn’t develop emotional attachments to the characters involved in “the game” and was invested in the story and how the characters worked their way out of sticky situations. that’s probably why I relate to ryuk significantly - though perhaps not in the “self involved” way. merely just watching. knowing you don’t have to try and help or anything like that. but like I said at the beginning, ryuk sees the human race as ants. he isn’t interested and fascinated because he “looks up to them” or anything like that. he finds them interesting because humans are their own enemy. they tear each other apart and ryuk loves that they see themselves as such a great species and yet they are so small. so fragile. it’s such a farce he finds it funny. vacillating and debating. there’s just so much going on and they worry about so much, but they just die in the end.
for an immortal entity, it’s a laugh.
#odairing#headcanons;#' what are some things '#me : writes a book#u th o u gh t#this took me like over 2 hours to write#ryuk is really such a complicated character though#like people assume he's just self involved and lazy#but there's so much more to it
