Death Brings Us Closer
Hey!!! This is the first fic i’ve ever posted, so it’s kind of nerve-wracking. It’s a peter parker x reader fic, and i tried to be gender-neutral. Also it’s disregarding a ton of events in the movies... If anyone sees this, positive comments are encouraged :)
Warning: Swearing & near-death experience ( i don’t dive into that)
Summary: You’re recovering from a near-death experience with the avengers.
You jumped. It seemed uncalled for, but this was your personality. You were always bullied in college, but this was extreme. A group of kids, boys & girls alike had chased you up onto the roof of the Mettely dorms. The dusty ground was hard to get your fitting on, but they had pursued you up there with no problems. Now, they were backing into you. The main problem was that this roof had no barrier, so one wrong move and you would be flying down a 10-story drop. Might as well just kill yourself now. You gulped hard as you glanced behind you. The edge of the building was less than 2 feet away, and the people were still coming towards you. You needed a plan, and now.
“What, you afraid of heights?” The guy you assumed was the leader said. He had a smug look on his face.
The thing is, you were a spiteful person. If someone said you couldn’t do something, you went right ahead and did it, not caring whether you would get hurt or die. That was mainly the reason you’d reputation was so bad.
“You can’t survive that jump! Nobody can! So why don’t you just surrender now?” The rest of the people nodded & smirked, agreeing with the guy.
Like an idiot, you went “No one can survive it, huh? Then I’ll be the first!”
You jumped off the roof. Big mistake. The ground was cement under you. Nothing to break you fall. Your life flashed before your eyes. You didn’t think it would end at the age of 19. As your head hit the cement, you heard gasps had shouts from everyone around you. All you could feel was a throbbing pain in your lungs and your head. Well this is what death feels like, you thought. It was the last thing you thought before you blacked out, barely breathing. You didn’t hear a person trying to talk to you, you didn’t feel him pick you up, you didn’t see his car that he rushed you in to get you to the safest place he knew, where some of the best doctors were.
He didn’t know if you were alive anymore.
When you woke up, you could hear people discussing something about someone. Your head was throbbing and it felt like there was an elephant sitting on your stomach. You opens you eyes to see 5 different people who you had never met in your life standing over you. Wait, you may have seen two of them before, but right now, you believed everything and nothing.
“Hurgruphungf” you said trying to get up. You were quickly pushed back down by a boy.
“Where.... what... who...??” You mange to stutter out.
“Oh, you’re up. I can’t believe you’re alive. That was a pretty bad fall. What were you doing jumping off a 10-story building, anyway? Are you suicidal? That’s rough. Anyway, based on the diagnosis and some of the treatments...” You cut the boy off by covering his mouth with your hand, which had a metric ton of tubes taped to it.
“Who. The fuck. Are you.” You said, making it clear that there was no messing about with you.
“Ah, you probably don’t know me. We go to the same university, NYU? I’m in second year, and I think you’re in first? Do I have that right? Anyway, I’m Peter, and this is Bruce, Shuri, Dad, and Dr. Dad. Also known and Tony and Stephen.”
“Ah, yes, knowing there names. That makes me understand why I’m in a hospital bed and my head really hurts and I’m surrounded by a bunch of fucking geniuses!!!” You snapped back. It was just your nature in times like this that you got really sarcastic & snarky.
“Oh, I guess you wouldn’t remember. You jumped off the Mettely dorms roof? Possibly because you’re suicidal? I think? I mean you might not be, but, I-“ Peter was babbling, so you decided to help him by slapping your have over his mouth again.
“I’m not suicidal, those people were backing me into the edge of the roof and there was no barrier so I was going to fall. They’re these bullies and I’ve been their target since the first day I got to university but they never went so far as to almost push me off a building. Then one of them said I couldn’t jump off the side of the building so I had to prove them wrong, right? So I jumped off to show them I could survive and now I’m here.” You stopped to take a breath. By now everyone in the room was staring at you. Even the Bruce guy had stopped checking your vitals to stare at you. Peter gently removed your head from his face and asked,
“So you’re not suicidal?”
“Yeah.” You replied. You had decided that you liked him. For now. As long as he didn’t do anything idiotic or mean.
“Good to know.” He said.
Then, the guy named Tony started taking about your injuries and what they needed to do. It bored you after about 30 seconds, and Peter noticed this and caught your eye, giving you a thumbs up. You gave him a small smile.
“Got it?” Tony concluded.
“Um, yeah, as long as there are no amputations and I can walk and stuff after.” You said, trying not to make it obvious you weren’t listening.
“No, no amputations. There will be surgery, though, and it will take about a year to recover.” The Stephen guy said. He looked like a wizard or something, with those clearly defined cheekbones.
“A fucking year??” You asked dubiously.
“Yes.” Stephen responded.
“Do you have a plan for keeping up with schoolwork?” Shuri asked.
“I don’t even have a ‘pla’” you respond. Peter gives a small laugh at your friends quote.
“Alright, we’re gonna have to put your under for this. Peter, out.” Bruce said, getting down to business.
“But I-“
“Out, Peter!”
“Hmph.”
—————————
After you had woken up, it was revealed that you had been asleep for a day and a half. Much longer than they had expected. But you were alive, and the surgery was a success. It left you feeling like shit.
Peter came to visit you with this really, really tall guy who didn’t look human. He was blonde with one blue and one brown-ish colour. He was wearing armour, which was weird because it didn’t seem like there was a fight going on. Also, he had a huge hammer. Were they planning to just kill you now?
“Hey, you’re up! I just wanted to check. This is my friend, Thor. Thor, this is... I actually don’t think I know your name! Weird. What is it?”
“It’s y/n.”
“Ah. Well, Thor, this is y/n.”
“Greetings, midgardian! I am Thor, god of thunder, king of Asgard.”
“Well, I’m y/n, the biggest idiot you’ll ever meet, who lives their life out of spite.”
Peter laughed a little at this. He seemed to like your sense of humour, which is a good sign.
“I am very unfamiliar with midgardian culture. Anything I should know?” Thor asked eagerly.
“Yes. Live by this word, which is ‘being in a total state of awareness’. The word is: Unagi.” You said, doing the hand motion with your first two fingers like a gun next to your eyeball. Thor gave you a confused look, but nodded along. Peter was laughing really hard, by was trying to hide it.
“Also, the best pickup line is ‘how you doin’?” Peter added on.
“I see.” Thor said, intrigued.
“What’re you guys telling him?” Bruce said, walking in to check on you to or like the ninth time today.
“Unagi.” You said, doing the hand motion.
“And ‘how you doin’?’” Peter said.
Bruce facepalmed. “Don’t listen to them. They’re trying to mess with you.”
“I am confused.” Thor said.
“Alright, you two need to get out so y/n can rest.” Bruce said, ending the conversation.
“Bye, y/n. By the way, I’m spider-man.” Peter said as he left.
“Wait, what? You’re joking, right?” You said. Peter just smiled and left the room with Thor.
“He’s spider-man?” You ask Bruce, hoping that he was joking.
“Yeah, I guess you should know, since you’re gonna be here for awhile. He’s spider-man, I’m the hulk, Tony’s iron man and Stephen’s the sorcerer supreme. Cool, right?” Bruce said nonchalantly.
“Um, yeah. That’s kind of a big deal! I mean like I’m surrounded by avengers & stuff... like. Wow.” You said, slightly shocked.
“Do you wanna lift your arm?” Bruce asked. You knew the question was rhetorical, but you took the opportunity anyway.
“Oh, I wish I could, but I don’t want to.” You said, quoting friends again.
“You’re just like a friends quote machine, aren’t you?”
“Yyyyep!”
“So anyway, what’s going on for you?” Bruce asked.
“Well, I’m in a hospital bed surrounded by avengers, so that happens. You?”
Bruce sighed. “I’m trying to find a way to ask Thor out, but I don’t know how.”
“I’m not great with advice, but can I interest you with a sarcastic comment?”
Bruce have you a dirty look.
“Fine, I’ll stop.” You said.
“Really?”
“No.”
“Ok, well. I really like him, but he’s dated girls in the past and he might not be gay and I don’t want to ruin our really close friendship, y’know?”
“Yeah, that’s a tough situation. If he doesn’t like you than this is all a moo point. It’s like a cow’s opinion. It doesn’t matter. It’s moo.” You replies, hoping he wouldn’t choke the life out of you. Bruce laughed a little and went back to checking you.
Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad here.
—————————
“Come on! A horse would totally win in a fight with a cow!” You laughed, debating with Peter. You two had gotten really close over the past year. You had even gotten to go on a vacation with the avengers. Your life had pretty much gone back to normal. You had your own room in the avengers tower, because Bruce, Shuri, Tony and Stephen wanted to make sure you were ok. You would be leaving in a week, and it was sad to think you had to leave these people who’d basically become your family behind. It felt wrong. But they didn’t want you here, right? They were just being nice & caring for you. Yeah. It’s right to leave.
“Hey, you know Thor & Bruce went on a date?” Peter said.
“They didn’t!”
“They did! They’re a thing now!”
“Oh my god!”
“I know!”
“Ah, i’m gonna miss this.” You said kind of sadly.
“Yeah. Why do you have to go?” Peter pouted.
“It’s not helpful for me to stay here! I’m just a thorn in your guys’ side.”
Peter gave you a disappointed look. Over the course of the year, he had fallen in love with you. He tried really hard to repress it, but he just loved everything about you and it broke his heart that you had to go. You would see each other on campus, but it wasn’t the same. The worst part is you were totally oblivious to it.
“Do you ever have bad days?” Peter asked.
“Sure, I have my bad days, but then I remember what a cute smile I have. Hey, I have an idea for a trick we can play on Thor.” You said, a mischievous smile on your face.
“Do you wanna get Loki to help?”
“Yes. Trust me, it’ll be great.”
—————————
A week later, it was the day of your departure. By 9:00 am, you had gotten all of your stuff together. It was only a backpack of clothes, because that’s all you really needed when you were there. The avengers supplied the rest. You went to the living room where most of the avengers were to say goodbye.
“Hey, guys. Just wanted to say bye before I leave.”
Stephen and a couple other people stood up and walked over to talk to you.
“You sure have made a fast recovery for someone who almost died a year ago.” Tony joked. He was practically hanging off Stephen’s side.
“Yeah. Well. You know how it is.” You said.
“I’m going to miss all your friends quotes.” Bruce said. You knew this was genuine. You two were also pretty close.
“Could I recommend watching a little more ‘ESPN’ and a little less ‘E.’?” You knew it would make Bruce laugh.
After all the other goodbyes were done, Peter came in to say goodbye. You were going to miss that asshole so much. He came in and you and him stood in front of the elevator facing each other.
“Bye, Peter.” You practically whispered. You were forcing yourself not to cry. Instead of responding, he stepped towards you, put your head in his hands, and kissed you.
It was slow and nice, soft but still firm. You were standing there in shock for a few seconds. You had never really felt love for Peter, but as he kissed you you could feel yourself fall in love with him. It didn’t take you long to relax and start kissing him back, hands moving to his waist to pull him even closer. You had both totally forgotten that every single avenger was standing right there. When you both finally pulled back, staring at each other for what seemed like eternity. His eyes were so chocolaty brown. How had you never noticed that? He gave out a little nervous laugh, surprised you had kissed him back. The moment ended when Bruce cleared his through to draw to your attention that everyone was staring at you. You glanced to them, then Peter. Everyone was quiet for a few minutes. Even Tony had no snarky or sarcastic comment to make. That’s a first.
“Um... hey, guys....” Peter stutters out. It just makes the tension in the room grow.
“Please tell me the rest of you guys just say Peter & y/n kiss.” Nat said.
You gave everyone a half smile and turned your head back to Peter.
“You should stay here.” He whispered, pressing his forehead to yours.
“Maybe I will.” You said, smiling like an idiot.
“He’s their lobster!” Bruce whispered, just loud enough so you & Peter could hear.
You smiled at the reference he made.
And you didn’t contradict him.

Several months later...
"A little more to the right, darling. Oh wait. That just won't do. Nevermind!" Ariyana shouted as she directed several of her workers to re-hang some garlands.
Moments later, her mate Jestin arrived. "Cakes have arrived, dear. Where would you like them?"
She smiled at her husband then pointed towards two large banquet tables. "Put them right there."
"Wait. Isn't that where Ludrick's smorgasbord is supposed to be?"
Ariyana shook her head in frustration. "Gah! So many things to do and so little time to do them in. Use your imagination, my love. I'm sure you can work out something beautiful in that pretty little head of yours."
***
Daniel Grimwald and Ludrick Crushblow rode atop a wagon as the two of them headed towards the grassy meadow that was adjacent to the base of Thunder Falls. Brad, Cynthia, Navina and Krenesh were there to greet them as the wagon pulled into the pavilion area.
"The meat wagon has arrived," Daniel said as he reached over and pulled off the covers. "Thanks to Ludrick here, everything has been put on ice so it doesn't spoil."
"Crap! That thing must weigh a ton," Krenesh commented as he helped unload the contents.
"One and a half ton, to be exact," Ludrick stated while Navina and Cynthia helped him off the wagon.
Brad chuckled. "You gals got the easy part - helping two hansom males, while, Kren and I are stuck carrying a heap of slaughtered carcasses."
"Good and tasty carcasses at that!" Krenesh reminded him.
"Don't let your friend eat everything before you get to the banquet hall," Cynthia commented.
"Bah! With all the work we've been doing, I just might be tempted."
"She wasn't referring to you, numbskull!" Navina quipped.
"If I find Ama's blowtorch anywhere, I might just make an instameal outta this yummy good stuff."
"Do it and die, Brad!" Cynthia chided as she handed Ludrick his cane.
***
"Mom. This dress makes me look like a bloated quaggan," Rachel grumbled as her mother examined the outfit.
"It looks fine on you, sweetie. Now be a good girl and take those audiophones out of your ears."
"But my favorite band just released this single. I'm one of the first in Claypool to even hear these songs."
Her mother looked around for a styling comb. "Have you seen Katie anywhere?"
"Um. I think she's with your soon-to-be daughter-in-law."
***
"This blue flower looks so pretty in your hair," Katie said as she placed a blue violet in Amalthia's golden mane.
"Can you find me a mirror? I would love to see what it looks like."
The little Grimwald clamored off her lap then was off to find a shiny reflective object.
"Oooo. Shiney! I'm a skritt!"
Amalthia smiled at the precocious child as she coaxed her into holding up the mirror to her face. "Why that's lovely. You know that my people love to eat skritt and I'm going to do the same!"
She laughed then playfully nibbled on Katie's head with her large canine teeth. Kaleb's little sister adored the attention that his mate had showered upon her.
Moments later, Ariyana stepped in. "Darling! You look splendid!"
"Ari! So nice to see you!" Amalthia picked Katie up, carefully planted her on the floor then walked over and gave her friend a big hug.
"I see you have a little helper," the sylvari said, eyeing the little girl.
"Oh yes. I could not have done it without her."
Katie found the wedding veil and ran over to place it on Amalthia's head. Kneeling down, the bride-to-be accepted the gift.
"How's that!"
"Oh my. She is going to put me out of business if she keeps that up," Ariyana said with a laugh.
Shortly thereafter, Cynthia and Navina walked into the room each bearing gifts. After a round of group hugs, the presents were set aside and everyone began to get ready for the upcoming event.
"You really outdid yourself, Ariyana. If my man ever gets around to popping the question, you better believe I'll be paying you a visit," Cynthia smiled as she examined Amalthia's bridal gown.
"I still don't get these human rituals. but hey, if it makes the two of you happy then I'm all in," Navina said with a chuckle.
"Kal is gonna die from a serious boner after seeing you in this. Dang girl! Maybe I should find a wizard who can make me grow horns, fur and a tail. Cause you look drop-dead sexy in this getup." Cynthia jested.
"Oh. I'll be giving him plenty of those both on and after our wedding night," Amalthia said with a wink and a wicked grin.
"What's a boner?" Katie asked innocently.
Everyone was at a loss for words.
***
Kaleb wandered around carrying a half-empty stein of lager while eyeing the tent that his soon-to-be wife was residing in. He took another draught just seconds before Brad approached from behind then clapped him on the shoulder. "The man of the hour! How ya doin' bro?"
The slightly inebriated Kaleb shook his head. "Couldn't be better. It's too bad I can't steal a peak at the misses."
"Don't you know it's bad luck seeing the bride before the wedding?"
Moments later, Daniel, Ludrick and Krenesh made their way to greet the groom-to-be. The elder Grimwald looked at his son, shook his hand then took a carnation from his lapel and placed it though one of Kaleb's buttons.
"That suit fits you well, son. Think you'll be sober enough to say your vows?"
Kaleb nodded and smiled. "I'm just nervously tipsy, that's all. I'll be fine once the ceremony starts."
"You are looking well, Kaleb. I'm sure my cub will agree once she sees you," Ludrick said as he handed the young man a flask of herbal coffee. "This is a quick cure for any hangover. Trust me, I've used it plenty of times."
Krenesh stepped in and shook his head. "You and Ama have got to be the oddest couple on the face of Tyria. But even that is secondary to this even odder ceremony. Bah! This thing is so tight around me I can't even move properly."
Brad and Kaleb laughed.
"I can hunt down Ariyana. I'm sure she'll be able to modify the outfit a bit for ya," Kaleb said.
"Nah. I'll be fine. Besides, the sooner I get out of this thing the better."
Suddenly, Brad burst out laughing as he pointed towards a lone male charr who was dressed in what appeared to be a bridesmaid outfit.
Kaleb looked up and said. "Isn't that..."
"...Tovu." Krenesh buried his head in the palm of his hand and closed his eyes.
"A male charr in a woman's outfit. Now I've seen everything," came Daniel's response.
Ludrick clapped the elder Grimwald on the shoulder and said with a half-chuckle. "I think you and I are going to have to follow your son's lead and have a nice strong drink together."
Daniel nodded in agreement.
"Oh man! I'm never going to forget this day!" Brad said in between his uncontrollable bouts of laughter.
"I wish I could," grumbled Krenesh.
"I seriously wish I could."
***
"Tovu! Over here," Bogo shouted as he beckoned for his partner to come join him.
Being careful not to soil the gown, Tovu gingerly stepped over the tufts of grass trying not to trip in the process.
"You look ravishing in that outfit, Tovu."
His partner frowned. "You think so? Everyone looks at me funny. It's not like our females even wear these kinds of outfits anyway."
"Oh, pay them no mind, you silly furball. My suit is rather plain compared to yours," Bogo said somberly.
"Nonsense! That tie brings out the color of your eyes so well."
"You think so? I think it makes me look kinda drab."
Off in the distance, someone was shouting something about where the other bridesmaid was. Tovu's ears pricked out upon hearing the message.
"Sorry big boy. They're calling me. See you at the altar, you big snuggly beast!"
Bogo waved back and winked at his partner. "Give Ama my love!"
***
Amalthia busied herself putting on the finishing touches to her wedding gown. Everyone else had gone to their respective dressing rooms in order to prepare for the upcoming ceremony. As she was braiding the last lock of her long golden mane, she heard someone scratching at the other end of the tent door.
"Come in."
When she looked up, she saw the Grimwald middle child standing before her. She had a pair of audiophones plugged into her ears and appeared to be jamming out to some type of music.
"Oh. Hello, Rachel."
There was an awkward silence for a moment before the teenager responded.
"Hi."
Amalthia smiled then handed her a comb. "Mind helping me with this last strand? It's always a bitch to tame."
The teen was taken aback by the charr's crassness. "Uh, okay."
"I won't bite. I promise," Amalthia said with a noticeable display of her large teeth.
Rachel summoned her courage to speak.
"You don't have rabies, do you?"
"I got my shot yesterday. Doctor said the medicine should take effect within the next week."
"So you do have it."
"You assume much about me, don't you? I never said I did or did not have what you thought I had. Now are you going to help me with that braid or are you going to just stand there wishing you really could just tell your mother to screw off," Amalthia said with a smirk.
The girl was completely speechless.
"Oops. Did I let that slip? Oh well, it must be lagers in me," she pointed to an empty stein by her vanity.
"You really are a lush," Rachel said laconically as she slowly reached her hand towards the charr's golden mane.
"Eh. You can blame my mother for that. I sure do."
"So is your mom mean?"
Amalthia closed her eyes and grinned. "She is as sweet as cyanide in a wine glass and as pleasant as an acidic enema."
Rachel couldn't help but laugh.
"So your face is capable of cracking a smile," Amalthia said.
"Well, even though I don't like you, at least we have one thing in common. My mom pisses me off a lot," Rachel said angrily.
"So what is it about her that pisses you off?"
Rachel shrugged.
"She makes me attend church and tells me the music I'm listening to is made by a bunch of blasphemers."
Amalthia looked closer at the audio box that Rachel was listening to. She noticed the name of the band that was stamped on one of the removable cartridges.
"SynR J-TX. I know their music."
"You do? I'll bet you haven't heard their latest album. My friend knows a friend who knows a friend who works with the band. I was able to get a fresh cut of their latest release."
Rachel switched to another track and began jamming out on that. Amalthia reached over then clicked on the audio box, switching it to another track.
"Hey!"
"Just listen. You've heard the extended release, right?" Amalthia asked.
The teen shook her head.
"They did a remix just recently. So recent, in fact, it hasn't even been cut yet."
"And how do you possibly know this?"
Amalthia gave the girl a wide grin. "I do live in a tavern. It's amazing what I hear sometimes."
"I like their fifth track. It's got a really cool beat."
"It does. Can you dance?"
Rachel nodded. "Well, yeah. Can you??"
The bride-to-be stood up then offered her hand to Rachel, inviting her to dance.
"Watch me!"
Both girls were dancing in sync. Rachel showed one of her moves while Amalthia mimicked her at every step. Soon, they were dancing like a pair of professionals in harmony with the rhythm of the beat.
"How much do you hate your mother?" Rachel asked as they were choreographing their moves.
Amalthia stopped dancing then beckoned for Kaleb's sister to come over to the vanity. She, then' pulled out an old parchment that featured an array of images that she drew when she was still a cub.
"When I was in my fahrar, we were asked to draw what we would do to our enemies once we were old enough to go into battle. Everyone else drew either, Flame Legion, humans, ogres or some other hideous creature," Amalthia smiled deviously. "I, on the other hand, was a bit more creative."
She handed Rachel the parchment that depicted a child-like drawing of one charr cutting off another charr's head.
"That was me beheading my mother with a broadsword. I colored the blade brown in order to depict the blade as being rusty and dull."
Rachel looked at the images, stunned. Amalthia pointed to another one that appeared to show a charr getting blown to pieces by an explosion.
"Oh. I drew that one hoping my mother would, someday, step on a land mine and blow herself up. See the bones and entrails?"
"Um. Dare I ask what this one is?"
Amalthia looked at the image of a darkened charr and laughed. "That one was Mother getting charbroiled by a flamethrower. Get it? Charrbroiled?"
"You are one sick kitten!" Rachel said in her characteristic monotone voice.
"If I am then why haven't you run away?"
Rachel shrugged. "I dunno. I guess you are like a shipwreck. Horrible to watch but I can't take my eyes off it."
"I have the suspicion it's something else. My guess is you resent your mother but are too afraid to tell her so openly," Amalthia stated.
"How would you know? You no nothing about me!" Rachel retorted angrily.
"Oh. I know a mother-hater when I see one. Trust me on this."
"I don't hate my mom."
"But you do resent her for what she's done to you. Always being obligated to live up to those expectations, while your brother doesn't seem to give a damn?"
"Well, maybe. Mom always did get on Kals case about doing things his way. I hate him for being able to resist our mom's authority," Rachel said as tears began to well up in her eyes.
"It's okay, Rachel. Let it out. That's what I did when I was a cub. I let out all my rage and anger through my drawings. Looking back, it was very therapeutic for me," Amalthia said as she rolled up the illustrations then put them back into the drawer.
"Okay, okay. I really think you aren't so bad now. I thought your people were always evil. But in talking to you like this, you seem almost human."
Amalthia smiled and gently reached for Rachel's face in an attempt to wipe her tears away. "I've learned that all intelligent races share the same basic emotions. Even though we each express them in different ways, all of us still feel love, sadness, apprehension and loneliness."
Rachel broke down then cried as she buried her head in Amalthia's chest. The charr gave her a gentle hug as she switched tracks to a more melodious song and began a slow dance with her future sister-in-law.
***
Ulfgar thumbed through the sermon, doing some last-minute revisions as needed. Daniel walked up to the massive norn as his son helped Ludrick navigate across the uneven ground.
"Ah. Three of the finest gentlemen I know. Are you ready for the big one, boy?" The old norn said with a hearty tone.
"When is anyone ever ready? I can't wait to see what Ama's dress looks like. Any idea where my sister's at?" Kaleb asked as he anxiously looked around for the ring bearer.
"Amalthia is giving Rachel the rings now. I think you'll like her attire, Kaleb," Ludrick said with a satisfactory nod.
"Father. Where's mom?"
"She's paying your future wife a visit. It's one of those mother-daughter sort of things." Daniel looked at his son with an air of pride and smiled.
"Take a deep breath, lad. This is supposed to be a legendary occasion, not a funeral."
"Sorry about that, Ulf. It's not the wedding itself that has me uptight so much as seeing so many folks here all in one place. I know that things started off very rocky for everyone, and this whole thing still feels so unreal. Never in a million years did I think we would ever come this far."
Ulfgar patted Kaleb on the shoulder. "And come far, you did. You and Amalthia are the first marital union in Tyira between human and charr. That is no small feat in and of itself."
His father gave him a reassuring hug as well. "Ulfgar's right, son. Through everything, you've never wavered in your conviction. This is as proud a day for me as it is for you and your bride."
Ludrick gave his future-son-in-law a pat on the shoulder as well then saluted with his fist to his chest. "Kaleb. Two years ago, you walked through that door in my butcher shop and everything I had ever known changed forever. You brought light into my cub's heart and hope to this old warrior once more. Even though you may not have fur, large teeth or horns, I feel that deep down you are as much of a charr as I am. If there is anyone on the face of Tyria who is worthy of my cub, it is you Kaleb Grimwald."
Everyone heard a noticeable sniffle coming from the mighty norn. "Baw! You've done and gotten me all sentimental ya old warbeast."
Kaleb gave the charr a tight bear hug as tears dribbled from his eyes and onto his future father-in-law's dark orange fur.

The usher called into Amalthia's tent letting her know that the ceremony would begin within the hour. As she was finishing up some last minute details, the usher also stated that Shirley Grimwald wanted to see her privately.
"She may come in."
The tent door opened and in walked Kaleb's mother, who was dressed in a conservative plain long dress. She approached her soon-to-be daughter-in-law then quietly pulled up a chair as she sat directly in front of her.
"That sylvari did an impeccable job making that dress," Shirley said as she began straightening out the pleats along the front.
Amalthia helped her with the hem. "That she did. I really like what she did to the backside. It doesn't bunch up around my tail at all. Not that such a thing is an issue with your people."
Shirley paused for a moment before responding. "About that topic Miss Steelblade..."
"Grimwald-Steelblade, if you don't mind. And Mrs please. It's a title we will all have to get used to," Amalthia said without looking at Kaleb's mother.
Shirley struggled to make conversation. "Please understand, Amalthia. I know you and I do not see eye-to-eye on a lot of things. But I also know that my son thinks the world of you, even though I have yet to understand what he sees that I don't."
"And your point, Mrs. Grimwald?"
Shirley could no longer contain her emotions. "Dammit! I still don't understand why my son picked a woman who is as rude and crass as you. If I were a man, I would object to this whole affair before either of you could take your first vows. That's what I would do, Miss Steelblade."
Amalthia shook her head then said in an unemotional tone. "But you are not a man, thank Pyreshot. I would like to like you, Mrs. Grimwald, but what you've presented me so far hasn't given me reason for changing my perception of you."
"So just what is your perception of me, Amalthia?"
"I think you are a woman who is deathly fearful of change. Look. I did not choose to intentionally seek out a human lover. My love for Kaleb just happened. Not everything that we are taught is necessarily the right path. There are some among us, of all races in fact, who travel to the beat of a different drum. Kaleb and I are such people. The sooner you accept that fact, the sooner you will feel a greater sense of happiness."
"I am trying to accept this, I really am. It's just so hard knowing that he is giving up his chance of having children who are his own. You are giving up your chance as well. Who's to say if this whole thing wears off you won't go..."
"Stop right there, Mrs. Grimwald. In case you were never informed, I cannot even bear children of my own. A war wound saw to that. Here, I'll show you. I developed an infection in my uterus that all but ruined my reproductive ability." Amalthia promptly lifted up her dress then showed Shirley the small scar that crossed her lower abdomen.
Stunned, Mother Grimwald said nothing as she reached out to touch the scar tissue.
"I... I'm soo sorry. I didn't know... Please forgive me for making such a cruel statement," she began to cry once more.
"Ignorant, yes. Cruel? No." Amalthia lowered her gown then reached out and held her soon-to-be mother-in-law by the shoulders, as she looked her in the face. "I don't hate you Mrs. Grimwald. You raised a fine son and I'm very honored to be his wife. Once you get to know me, I think you may actually grow to like me just a little."
The usher stopped by once more indicating that the ceremony was close at hand. Both Shirley and Amalthia waved him off as the two ladies smiled at each other for the first time.
"Be a good wife to my son, Amalthia."
She looked at her future mother-in-law in the eyes and said in a resolute voice.
"I will."
***
Ulfgar stood at the podium all dressed in his finest regalia. Below him, stood Kaleb who was anxiously waiting for his bride to come down the aisle. To his right stood his best men - Brad, Krenesh, Jestin and Bogo. Their outfits were designed to match in spite of the physical size and proportion difference between human and charr. To Ulfgar's right stood the bridesmaids - Cynthia, Ariyana, Navina and the most unusual of all Tovu.
The aisle was lined with soldiers from both the legions and the Seraph. Each one instructed to hold their swords aloft in criss-cross fashion when the bride walked down the aisle.
Moments later, the final wedding theme began to play. Katie began dropping petals of jasmine and lilac flowers as she walked by followed closely by her older sister, Rachel (who was the ring bearer).
Once the two girls found their places. The ode to the wedding march began. Soldiers from both Seraph and legions drew their blades and meshed them together in staggered formation. Kaleb could see the swords withdrawing as his bride drew closer.
Amalthia strode lightly across the pedal-laden carpeted aisle as the last blade drew back from either side of her. She glanced up at Kaleb then gave him a wink. For his part, Kaleb was awestruck by her beauty. The gown she wore accentuated her best features, and reflected the amalgamation of two vastly different peoples. In spite of his old injuries, Ludrick summoned strength to walk his daughter down the aisle.
She helped hold him steady his gait the entire time until he found his seat at the front row. Once she had helped her father to his seat she stood next to Kaleb as the both of them turned to face Ulfgar.
The old norn smiled upon the bride and groom just as he was about to deliver his sermon.
"Today a legend is born. For today, for the first time in recorded Tyria's history, we are gathered here today to unite two souls from two very different peoples. On this special occasion, a human and a charr will be joined, not in bloody combat with each other, but in sacred matrimony."
Ulfgar turned to Kaleb. "The young man standing before me is one whom I have known since he was a pup. Never have I met a soul who is more good-natured, witty and willing to go the extra mile than this young man. I have seen his courage, his generous heart and his willingness to sacrifice himself for the sake of others. Kaleb Grimwald was a boy who did not know what his future would be. He was brash, independent and in many cases, foolish. But all that changed when he met the one soul who gave him a purpose."
The old norn then turned to Amalthia. "This young lady is like no charr I've ever met. In spite of her rather small size, she has the heart of a norn. She is bold and completely unafraid to say whatever's on her mind. Only she could tame the heart of the wayward boy whom I've known since he was pup."
Ulfgar gestured for Kaleb and Amalthia to face each other while holding hands. He took the rings from Rachel then handed the first one to Kaleb.
"There are no words, no ceremonies, no rituals that can adequately express what is about to transpire this day."
"Kaleb Grimwald - will you swear to give Amalthia your heart, your soul and keep her well in sickness and in health? Will you be there to comfort her when she is sad or downtrodden? Will you be there to bring joy and happiness into each other's lives? And will you promise to do these things for the rest of your days? What say you, lad?"
"I do," Kaleb said as he looked lovingly into Amalthia's eyes then slid the ring onto her finger.
"Amalthia Steelblade - will you swear to give Kaleb your heart, your soul and keep him well in sickness and in health? Will you be there to comfort him when he is sad or downtrodden? Will you be there to bring joy and happiness into each other's lives? And will you promise to do these things for the rest of your days? What say you, lass?"
"Of course!" She smiled as her ears twitched and she slid the band onto his finger.
"Then by the power vested in me and the Great Raven Spirit, I now pronounce you man and wife."
Ulfgar, then, smiled and said with a wink. "You two know the rest."
Kaleb and Amalthia embraced in a passionate kiss as cheers erupted from the crowd. The old norn waved for the newly married couple to face the audience then announced in his resonating voice.
"Behold, Kaleb and Amalthia Grimwald-Steelblade. May they both share many happy years together!"
Shortly thereafter, both were given plenty of hugs and well wishes by various friends and family. Kaleb, then, grabbed his wife by the hand and said. "You know what comes next, right?"
Amalthia and her new husband said in unison.
"Get toasted!"

JUNO STEEL AND THE TIME GONE BY (PART ONE)
SOUND: WIND BLOWING. FOOTSTEPS.
THEIA: Caution: radiation detected at. Fatal levels. Turn back. Turn back.
User safety tip: this is. A very bad idea. Suggestion: activate Theia Global Map. To search for shelter.
Caution: I cannot act without user permissions. User permissions are needed. Awaiting user permissions.
JUNO: (GRUNTS)
SOUND: PUNCH.
THEIA: You appear. To be punching your own face. Would you like. Some help with that?
JUNO: Just… shut up… (SIGHS)
SOUND: RUSTLING, THUMP.
THEIA: For your safety. I do not recommend. You lie down. In this location.
THEIA: Reporting potential threats active as of last user scan. Threat one: a massive sandstorm. Threat two: fatal radiation. Threat three: this area of the desert is recognized by the Martian Wildlife Foundation as a protected breeding ground for. Peepers.
JUNO: I said shut up!
SOUND: CHIRPS.
THEIA: Playing previously-downloaded information on peepers.
JUNO: (GROWLS)
THEIA: Native only to the northern deserts of Mars, peepers went uncaptured and unresearched for several centuries after their discovery.
SOUND: MORE CHRIPS.
Above ground, peepers resemble colonies of small, tunneling creatures. Which pop into and out of the ground and make a noise not unlike Earth’s groundhogs or meerkats.
SOUND: MORE CHRIPS.
Researchers assumed these creatures to be individual organisms until three hundred years ago. When the first peeper was successfully brought into captivity. And those small rodent-like structures were discovered to be the sensory organs of a much larger subterranean predator.
SOUND: CRUMBLING, DEEP ROAR.
JUNO: Enh, took you long enough.
SOUND: ROAR, BLASTER SHOT, SQUEAL. QUICK FOOTSTEPS DEPARTING. WIND BLOWING, FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING.
VOICE 1: Hey. Hey, you.
JUNO: Go away, I’m busy.
VOICE 1: Hmph.
SOUND: FABRIC RUSTLING.
JUNO: Hey– hey, what the hell are you doing? Put me down, you– what the hell? I-I know you.
VOICE 1: A correction: I know you. I have been told it is important to speak accurately when beginning a business transaction.
JUNO (NARRATOR): Brown jacket; tough skin, broad shoulders; dark, hard eyes that looked like they’d draw blood if you got too close. This guy had been stalking me since what felt like a lifetime ago, back in Hyperion – and if I’d been scared of him then, seeing him up close only made it clearer how easily those big, scarred hands could snap my neck.
My name’s Juno Steel. And I’m… (SIGHS) just a guy who wanders into near-certain death in the desert and then gives the glad eye to his probable killer.
Y’know, saying that out loud, a lot of criticisms I’ve taken over the years suddenly make a lot more sense.
VOICE 1 [BROWN JACKET]: My hovercycle’s radiation shield is only active when the engine is running. Which means I’m going to go now, and you’re going to come with me.
JUNO: You were watching me… before the museum, and b– and before the subway, you were watch—
No. No, look, I’m done. If you want to spy on me that’s fine, but I don’t care. I’m doin’ this on my own.
JACKET: Dying?
JUNO: That’s… not necessarily the plan, but if that’s the last move I can make solo, then sure, that.
JACKET: (AFTER A PAUSE) He’ll find you, you know.
JUNO: What?
JACKET: The one who gave you that eye. Have you activated it recently?
JUNO: Not for a few hours, but—
JACKET: Then he has your location. He will find you – and whatever’s left of your mind, once the radiation’s done with it.
Unless you come with me.
JUNO: Yeah? Why should I?
JACKET: I know how to remove that cyber-eye from your head. I know how to set you free.
You can get in the sidecar when you’re ready.
SOUND: FOOTSTEPS DEPARTING.
JUNO: (GROWLS)
JACKET: Good. Be sure to strap in.
JUNO: Not until you tell me where we’re going.
SOUND: RUSTLING.
Of course! Another man of mystery. Listen, I’ve really had enough of these, so if you can’t even tell me where we’re going I’ll– oof!
SOUND: THUD.
JACKET: I’ll tell you. I was just looking for a helmet in your size.
JUNO: What the… how many helmets do you keep in this bag?
JACKET: Bike safety is important.
SOUND: ZIP.
We’re going to see someone about a job.
JUNO: Very specific, thanks. (HUFFS) Where?
JACKET: Where all of the most important jobs on Mars happen. The Cerberus Province.
SOUND: WHOOSH. ENGINE STARTS.
MUSIC: STARTS.
JUNO (NARRATOR): To be honest, I still wasn’t convinced my mind hadn’t gotten roasted. They say after one hour uncovered from the radioactive sun you start hallucinating, and after five it’s time to say bye-bye to a good chunk of your brain. I’d been out there… well, somewhere between those two options. My watch said it had only been ninety minutes, but on the other hand I wasn’t wearing a watch.
JACKET: So. Do you have a good reason for walking out in the desert? Besides your death wish.
JUNO: Besides my what?
JACKET: It’s well-documented.
JUNO: Documented where?
How long have you been watching me? Is that how you found me out here?
Hello?
JACKET: Hello.
JUNO: (SLOWLY) How long have you been—
JACKET: We are almost at the Cerberus Province. Buddy will answer your questions when you speak with her. If this job is not to your liking, well… back into the desert with you, and you die a free man.
JUNO (NARRATOR): So it was out of the frying pan, into the biggest hideout of thieves and murderers and outlaws in the solar system, I guess.
(SIGHS) We saw the volcanoes first. A ring of ‘em, dusty and dormant. And then, at the center of that ring…
JACKET: The lighthouse.
JUNO: What?
JACKET: The lighthouse activates at night, to guide ships to the spaceport beneath it. I hear before it was installed more ships landed inside volcanoes than was acceptable.
JUNO: So, like… one ship?
THEIA: Would you like to research the number of ships—
JUNO: (MUTTERING) Shut up.
JACKET: I will not. Are you done throwing up, now? It cannot be helping your radiation sickness to stay out here.
JUNO: I think—
JACKET: And if you vomit on my hovercycle I cannot be held responsible for what happens to you next.
JUNO: (SPITS) I think I’m good.
JACKET: Get on, then.
MUSIC: ENDS.
SOUND: WHOOSH. ENGINE RUMBLES.
JUNO (NARRATOR): The lighthouse was huge; an intricate crossing of plates and pipes that looked like somebody had spun a spiderweb from gold, then grabbed its center and pulled it up to scratch the clouds. It was even beautiful, for a minute. Then I wondered if you could see the Piranha’s body from up there, and it just made me feel sick.
The lighthouse wasn’t what I expected from the myths about some ramshackle pirate hideout hidden underneath the desert. According to the stories, the Cerberus Province was more meeting place than city – a non-stop crime convention to trade business cards and thermonuclear weaponry. It didn’t have a Dome, after all. Living there long-term would’ve been suicide.
But the lighthouse didn’t line up with the stories. Neither did the Cerberus Province itself, once we slipped underground to see it.
JUNO: What the hell are all those?
JACKET: Do you mean the buildings, or the tents?
JUNO: I-I don’t know, both?
JACKET: Well. Some are buildings, and some are tents.
JUNO: I-I know that! I mea—
Look, that lady’s drying sheets on a balcony. That’s a grocery stand in a brick house. That guy’s taking his clothes out of a laundromat!
JACKET: It is very dusty on Mars.
JUNO: Wh-why do they live down here? Nobody lives down here. Nobody.
JACKET: Not by choice. When we land it is imperative that you stay close to me and not look too long at anyone else’s property.
SOUND: ENGINE STOPS. CROWD NOISE, MUSIC FADES IN.
JUNO (NARRATOR): When he was done parking we walked out into the street. The buildings and tents I’d seen from above were thick here, people packed elbow to elbow, vendors shouting into the streets.
CROWD VOICES (IN BACKGROUND): Peepers! Getcha pickled peepers over here! Plutonian candy! Delicious Plutonian candy, Plutonium extra!
JUNO (NARRATOR): You get so lost in a place like that you forget you’re part of it, until it reaches out and grabs you.
VOICE 2: Please.
JUNO: Ah!
VOICE 2: Please, you will help me. You will help me. The teecket they give me, the teecket, it is false!
JUNO: Uh-uh, ticket? I-I-I don’t—
VOICE 2: I have moneys. On Susano-o I am doctor, do you know this place? Bank account, years, interest thirty, I have… I have… Please, please, Tammono, you will help me, you will help me!
JUNO (NARRATOR): The woman was wearing a mask, but I’d knocked it crooked in my surprise, and… underneath…
Her skin, it… (SIGHS) God, it looked so painful. Big plates of cracking charcoal crust on a plane of soft, raw, red and gray. She looked burned, or… melting, or both. Long-term radiation damage. The kind of stuff they showed us in old academy videos and promised we’d never actually see. Th-that you’d have to be crazy to stay outside a Dome long enough to get it.
All of a sudden I noticed there were people all over the street wearing masks like that, people by the dozens that must’ve been covered in those burns, and if that many people needed those masks, maybe crazy wasn’t the problem.
Then Brown Jacket grabbed me by the shoulder and kept me moving.
JACKET: Juno. We have to leave now.
VOICE 2: Moneys I have, sir! Please, your vehicle, your vehicle!
JUNO: …What?
JACKET: I told you not to look too long at anyone else’s property.
JUNO: P-property?
JACKET: That bulge beneath that woman’s sleeve? A blood filtration bracelet – what some call a debtor’s tag. She is serving an indentured servitude to pay for her healthcare. If you attempt to do as she says, her treatment will end, and she will die.
JUNO: But… you’re just gonna let that—
JACKET: I have no choice. That woman is finished. She took an illegal ride to the Solar planets, became ill, and sold herself to live a few years longer. It is a common mistake.
JUNO: But her skin… how long has she been paying?
JACKET: I have seen similar surface-level symptoms manifest within two years.
JUNO: Surface-level. Yeah, sure, that sounds great.
JACKET: Not five hours ago getting too involved in a city’s politics nearly killed you. Do you really want to make the same mistake so soon?
JUNO: I…
No. No, I guess not.
JACKET: Good.
Now please. Get in this dumpster.
JUNO: What?
JACKET: I’m afraid I must insist.
JUNO: H-hey, put me down—
SOUND: THUD. PLASTIC RUSTLING, BOTTLES CLINKING.
Ah! What the hell was that for?!
JACKET: Have you used any of your eye’s special functions since we entered the Cerberus Province?
JUNO: What? I ha– I haven’t—
JACKET: In the interest of fairness, I should tell you that if you have, I will be forced to crush your head with this dumpster lid.
JUNO: How is that any fairer— whoa, whoa, whoa, there! No, I-I haven’t used it. You said that’s how Ramses is gonna track me, right?
JACKET: That is good. And yet we are being followed.
JUNO: What?
JACKET: Quiet. Listen. There is a figure behind me, slight, wearing a black hood. Do you see their face?
JUNO: No, it’s… covered by a scarf. They could’ve just come in from outside. They’ve got sand all over—
JACKET: Their clothes have sand – but not their boots. It’s a disguise. We may have to relocate our meeting.
I am going to step into this shop and buy a large decaffeinated Jovian tea with two sugars. You will stay here and watch to see what they do.
JUNO: Wait, is th– is the tea some kind of code? What does it mean?
JACKET: It means I am thirsty. It is large because I am very thirsty, and decaffeinated because I have a predisposition to addictive—
JUNO: Okay, yeah, I get it. Just go get your stupid tea, I’ll watch the road.
JACKET: Thank you.
SOUND: FOOTSTEPS.
JUNO (NARRATOR): I had to hand it to Brown Jacket: he was right. As soon as we stopped moving our hooded tagalong stopped, too.
SOUND: BELL JINGLES.
She sat at a roadside stand and looked over the menu, flipping pages too quickly to read ‘em. I knew a tail when I saw one.
Jacket came back out a minute later sucking down something that smelled like gasoline with two sugars.
SOUND: BELL JINGLES. FOOTSTEPS.
JACKET: The deed is done.
JUNO: What deed?
SOUND: SMALL EXPLOSION.
CROWD VOICES: (YELLS) Sintoloo ga voo?! The hell?
VOICE 3: Baweebis! Baweebis!
VOICE 4: What the hell are they trying to say?
VOICE 5: They’re saying hood, hood! I think they saw whoever planted the bomb!
VOICE 3: Gawoosh! Baweebis, baweebis!
VOICE 4: Is that them? Is that the low-life that blew up my store?
VOICE 3: Baweeeeeeeeeeebis!
VOICE 4: Outer Rim bum! Learn to talk right!
Hey, she’s getting away! Get her!
JUNO: …Wow.
Did you pay them to say that?
JACKET: No. I paid the other customer to translate anything they said as ‘hood.’
JUNO: But if this place has so many people from the Outer Rim—
JACKET: There are too many languages spoken on the Outer Rim to keep up with. We have large communities from Balder. Yama.
JUNO: Susano-o.
JACKET: Indeed. And besides: they lost. Now take these.
SOUND: KEYS JINGLING.
JUNO: Keys?
JACKET: When the commotion settles, you will remove yourself from the garbage, go down this alley, and take your second left. You will look for the analog lock that matches this key, and you will wait for me there – at the lighthouse.
JUNO: The lighthouse? Really? You have the key to that big tower—
SOUND: FOOTSTEPS DEPARTING.
Hey! Hey, where the hell are you goin’?
JACKET: (FADING) To ensure the area is secure. Now be silent. Dumpsters cannot speak in the Cerberus Province.
JUNO (NARRATOR): I did what the big guy told me to do. Waited a few minutes for the dust to settle, and when I was pretty sure nobody was watching me I went down the alley.
The lighthouse was on the edge of town, and the closer I got the more radiation-ravaged the place looked. But there were no warning signs, no public health notices, just an advertisement:
VOICE 6 (FROM SPEAKER): Feeling itchy? Hearing things? Gamma rays got you down? Visit the Cerberus Board of Fresh Starts for your Blood Filtration Bracelet today! No down payment required!
JUNO (NARRATOR): The, uh… lighthouse came soon after.
SOUND: KEYS JINGLE. DOOR CREAKS.
The inside was a bar: dark wood, plush cushions. Even the dust looked nice, which was good, because there was a hell of a lot of it. I helped myself to an unmarked, extremely potent-looking bottle behind the bar and took a seat to examine it more closely with my eyes, mouth, and liver.
JUNO: Here’s lookin’ at you, lighthouse. Seems like both of us are back from the grave.
SOUND: ICE CUBES CLINK.
VOICE 7: If you keep stealing my wares, darling—
JUNO: (CHOKES)
VOICE 7: —I’ll return you to that grave myself.
SOUND: CLUNK.
That’s ten thousand creds of fine liquor you’ve just spilled. A life like yours, I’d think you’d be a little more careful about putting yourself into debt with a stranger.
SOUND: MECHANICAL WHIR.
MUSIC: STARTS.
JUNO: (CHOKING) Who the hell are you?
VOICE 7: The person you’re here to meet. Now go get yourself a drink. I’ll be taking this one.
JUNO: Hey, that was mine—
VOICE 7: And now it isn’t.
SOUND: ICE CUBES CLINKING.
It’s nothing personal, darling; I just have a natural tendency towards envy and I’ve always believed in doing what feels natural. Like now, for example: it feels natural for me to say I’ll pay you the ten thousand creds you owe me if you shut up and get yourself a drink.
JUNO (NARRATOR): The woman who’d just taken my drink was a bombshell. By which I mean she looked extremely dangerous and made a hell of an entrance. She had big plumes of flame-red hair trailing over her neck and half her face, and a dress so avant-garde I would’ve believed her if she said she got it next year. The first thing she did when she sat down was put a blaster on the table in front of her and, in the process, reveal she had another one, two knives, and what looked like a grenade strapped to her leg.
She looked ready for a war. Hell, she looked ready to fight on both sides.
SOUND: BOTTLE UNCORKS.
JUNO: So you’re the big guy’s buddy?
SOUND: CLUNK. LIQUID POURING.
VOICE 7: That’s what he called me? His buddy?
JUNO: I’m sure he’ll be disappointed to hear you disagree.
SOUND: CLUNK.
VOICE 7: I don’t. It’s just funny of him. Fine, you can call me the same. Buddy.
JUNO: Seems a little early for that.
VOICE 7 [BUDDY]: I’m friendly.
JUNO: And him?
BUDDY: He’s not interested.
JUNO: No, I mean, what’s his—
BUDDY: Besides, we aren’t here to talk about him; we’re here to talk about you. Juno Steel: ex-cop, ex-patsy for Ramses O’Flaherty, currently extremely unemployed and not taking it very well. You’ve got an eye problem, and I don’t mean like glaucoma. You’ve just spent a few months being someone else’s stooge – or thirty-eight years, depending on how you count it – and you’re just about ready to stooge stag. That’s where we come in.
What’s the matter? Did I get any of that wrong?
JUNO: No. That’s what’s the matter.
BUDDY: Oh, I’m sorry. Why don’t you pour us both a drink and I’ll try not to upset you so much, darling? What’s the danger in just… sitting and listening?
JUNO: No, you know what? I’m tired of listening. It’s someone else’s turn to listen. Got it? The second it looks like you’re trying to get me to do something I don’t like, I’m walking out into the desert with a beach towel and no sunscreen. The second. ‘Cause I am not trading one smooth psychopath for another, you got me, I am not—
BUDDY: I hear you. I’m stubborn, not deaf. Sit.
SOUND: CREAK.
JUNO: Hmph.
BUDDY: There. Doesn’t this feel so much more civilized?
JUNO: Gotta say, Buddy, I kinda walked into the desert to get away from civilized.
BUDDY: I know. And that was a very big move. Made me act faster than I planned to, but… you got lucky, and a position opened up a little earlier than expected.
JUNO: Position? That’s why you’ve been watching me.
BUDDY: Gainful employment. A lot to gain, too.
JUNO: I’m not walkin’ into any more bad contracts or big debts.
BUDDY: And you don’t have to. Like I said, I always keep my business partners happy, Juno. And unlike your two-bit former employer over at the Vixen Valley, I know that doesn’t come by force. Father always said, there are only two ways to keep the chickens in the coop: either build a big wall, or make them never want to leave.
JUNO: Didn’t think there were many farmers on Mars.
BUDDY: He was a prison warden, actually. Incredibly popular with his inmates. A bit less popular with Dark Matters.
JUNO: Rest in peace.
BUDDY: Yes, I would assume the rest of him is in one piece, but we never found it. Regardless, Juno, my point: scouting the talent I want is something I take very seriously, and you are only one name on a very, very long list. If you do not want this job, don’t waste my time. The only reason you’re here now is because I need three people, my third missed his flight to Mars, and you happened to be available.
JUNO: Wow, you sure do know how to make a lady feel special.
BUDDY: I know how to make a special lady feel special. Maybe if you’re very good that’ll be you.
Now, a toast. To a new, and brighter, future—no, no. (CHUCKLES) I’m guessing we’ve both had entirely too much of that. To… letting go. Moving on.
JUNO: Sure. To moving on.
SOUND: GLASS CLINKS.
BUDDY: Hm.
Now.
SOUND: MECHANICAL WHIR.
The job.
MUSIC: CHANGES.
As I think you’ve already gathered, our work isn’t exactly on the spotless side of the law. My friend and I work in the craft of what we call “relocation services.”
JUNO: Which I’m guessing means you relocate other people’s things to your pockets.
BUDDY: My, you are quick. They aren’t always things, but… spot-on.
JUNO: So is that what you need me for, some kind of heist? ‘Cause I—
BUDDY: No, no, the heist has been finished for weeks. It’s the sale, darling. We need you to help us with the sale.
JUNO: You… want me to work the cash register on your black market deal?
JACKET: The sale is the most dangerous part of any job in the Cerberus Province.
JUNO: Ah! Where the hell did you come from?!
JACKET: The door.
BUDDY: Do try and focus, Juno. Yes, the sale. This town is crawling with undercover law enforcement and people who expect you to do your work for free but don’t feel like telling you ahead of time, and neither sits particularly well with me. So, we’re going to make certain we get paid, or else we're not handing over anything.
JUNO: Yeah, okay. And speaking of which, what are we selling?
BUDDY: The sale’s in three hours, in this bar. We’ve agreed to meet somewhere public, which means within the next three hours we’ll have to make this place public. We’re opening it for business.
JUNO: We’re– wait. You own the lighthouse?
BUDDY: Just the first floor. I couldn’t sell it if I wanted to, honestly; too much radiation leaks in through the roof for anyone to want it. At any rate, once we open, my big friend is going to work the bar; you’re going to play sad drunk at one of those tables by the door.
JACKET: You will be drinking carbonated tea. Focus will be crucial.
JUNO: Sounds like a fun party.
BUDDY: While the buyer and I make the exchange, you will watch the crowd and contact me on covert comms if you notice anyone acting strangely. We take no chances here, do you understand? This is too important.
JUNO: Okay, but what are we sell—
BUDDY: Hopefully it all goes off without a hitch and you get paid for sitting around and enjoying some tea. Then we’ll show you how to remove that eye, and you can decide whether this kind of work interests you.
JUNO: I feel like I could answer that question a lot faster for you if I knew what we were selling.
BUDDY: There’s no need to get snippy, Juno. You only needed to ask. Show him.
SOUND: CLUNK.
We will be selling this briefcase.
JUNO: And… what’s inside the briefcase?
BUDDY: Oh, that’s none of your concern.
JUNO: Well, if I wasn’t concerned before, I sure as hell am now! Listen, I told you, if you make me do anything—
SOUND: THUD. GLASS CLINKS.
JACKET: You listen.
SOUND: MECHANICAL WHIR.
MUSIC: STOPS.
BUDDY: Thank you. I understand the word of an outlaw probably doesn’t mean much to you, Juno – but it will mean even less if you don’t let me finish a sentence.
JUNO: Hmph.
BUDDY: You can’t have it both ways. You can’t both know everything and live a life just for yourself. You understand that, don’t you?
SOUND: MECHANICAL WHIR.
MUSIC: STARTS.
If you aren’t sure you want to stay here? Then don’t stay. Don’t get involved. That’s how Hyperion hurt you, isn’t it? I don’t think that’s your fault, of course. That’s just what cities do. Once you get attached to somewhere or someone… you can’t break apart without leaving some of yourself behind.
JUNO: The hell is that sappy music coming from, anyways? It’s driving me nuts.
BUDDY: What mu– oh, that. Darling, would you?
JACKET: (GRUNTS)
SOUND: THUNK. MECHANICAL WHIR.
MUSIC: STOPS.
BUDDY: Thank you. Semi-Autonomous Music Machines. They’re all over the province and they all act like this. You’ll tune them out eventually.
JUNO: A-alright, so. You want me to watch the door while you make your trade-off. Keep an eye out for anything suspicious—
JACKET: Don’t use your eye.
JUNO: Yeah, thanks, I got that. Anything else?
BUDDY: Just one thing. Give him his weapon.
SOUND: CLANK.
JUNO: There’s… no stun on this.
JACKET: Laserproof vests are too common in these jobs. That will punch through them.
JUNO: So you just want me to kill someone? Just ‘cause you say so?
BUDDY: I assure you that if anything goes wrong, he’ll deserve it.
JUNO: But—
BUDDY: Then don’t. Use your last few hours of freedom and walk to an early death in the desert, based on the fear that something might go wrong, you might have to shoot, and the shot you fire might kill them. But those seem like silly odds to throw your life away on.
My business and my past are my concerns, Juno. Just do the job, and don’t get involved. Then, you go and do whatever it is you want to.
JUNO (NARRATOR): Don’t get involved.
I kept repeating that to myself for the next three hours, as we cleaned the place up and opened the doors and let the crowd filter in. The gun was heavy in my pocket. I wished I’d taken my blaster off the Piranha, but it was too late. She was gone. The whole life I’d known her in was gone.
And meanwhile, in this life, the sale was just a few minutes away. I sat at my table by the door and watched the crowd mob the bar, the big guy toss drinks, and Buddy schmooze like she knew everyone here personally.
SOUND: CROWD CHATTER IN BACKGROUND.
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): I’ve just received confirmation that he’ll be here shortly. Anything strange on either of your ends?
JUNO: Uh, yea– yeah, now that you mention it, I’ve been meaning to have a dermatologist take a—
JACKET (FROM COMMS): Do not complete this joke, Juno, or you will regret it.
JUNO: Oookay.
JACKET (FROM COMMS): There is nothing over here.
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): Juno?
JUNO (NARRATOR): I listened in to the crowd around me, all the faces and costumes of crime, and I didn’t hear anything weird about them – but plenty about Buddy.
CROWD VOICES: (OVERLAPPING) Buddy’s back! Buddy, sha, Buddy! The Lighthouse, open again! Has anyone seen Buddy? She was always the talk of the town, I hear… Buddy Aurinko, after all this time!
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): Juno?
JUNO: (QUIETLY) Buddy Aurinko…? (NORMAL VOLUME) Hang on, is your name actually Buddy?
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): That’s what I told you to call me, isn’t it?
JUNO: So, what, is his name actually The Big Guy?
JACKET (FROM COMMS): That would be absurd.
JUNO: Then what is it?
JACKET (FROM COMMS): We are not there yet.
JUNO: We’re not at names?
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): Quiet, you two! He’s just come in the door! Do you see him, Juno?
JUNO: Uh, little guy, gray monosuit, kinda looks like he’s allergic to light?
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): That’s the one.
JUNO: Doesn’t look like a crime boss. Too nervous.
JACKET (FROM COMMS): Not a good sign.
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): Experience suggests that that might just be his face, actually.
VOICE 8 (FROM COMMS): Eh… what was that?
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): Ah, there you are, Mister Rasbach. It’s been too long.
VOICE 8 [RASBACH] (FROM COMMS): We… spoke yesterday, I think?
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): Yes, but you are late, and that does mean it’s been too long, doesn’t it?
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): (NERVOUS LAUGH) Ah, I- uh, I see. You must excuse me, Miss Buddy, both my tardiness and my uncomprehending. Solar is not my… language initial.
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): I’m only razzing you, Razzy. You manage much better here than I would on Balder, I’m sure. Please, sit. Would you like a drink? Two drinks? You’ll have to forgive me for trying to upsell you, but, a small business owner has to keep her claws sharp.
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): It… does not appear you starve of the business. Yesterday this bar was not even in operation, and today—
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): I’ve been away a long time, and I’m impatient. Surely you know how that is. I imagine you must miss Balder terribly.
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): Is so… is so. (NERVOUS LAUGH) And yet, there are the creds to be made in these planets Solar, yes? A business top profitable. Do you know how it is to support a family, Miss Buddy?
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): I pick my own family, Raz, and the first thing I make sure of is that they can support themselves.
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): Perhaps is so, here, but on the Outer Rim, after the War? This is not always possible. My planetmen, they desperate, eh? They take the first ship from Balder they can find, they swallow the poisoning radiation, they need the healthcare to live. And so we give them this support… for the price. We support them, them support we – is cycle top beautiful, I think.
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): Do you mind if we get on with this? I have customers to attend to.
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): Of course.
(CLEARS THROAT) Shall we… ah, show the wares?
JACKET (FROM COMMS): Watch the crowd, Juno. This is the moment.
SOUND: CLICK, HISS.
JUNO (NARRATOR): I wanted to see what the hell was in that briefcase, but… I tried to remember what Buddy told me. It was none of my business. Don’t get involved.
So instead I scanned the crowd. And that’s when I saw her come in through the back door.
JUNO: Big guy, our friend with the hood from earlier just showed up. Didn’t you say you lost her?
JACKET (FROM COMMS): What is she doing?
JUNO: Nothin’ yet.
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): This is really… the Curemother. You have it!
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): Now. You pay me, you take this, and your group makes just oodles and oodles of money for you to send back to all the little orphans and victims and puppy-dogs on Balder, or whatever your story is today. Do you even have children, Razzy, or is it all just a story?
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): Does it affect our business, whether or not ‘tis so?
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): I suppose not.
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): Hm. Now, the transaction. We will be using my comms, as agreed.
SOUND: BEEPS.
Security transactional set to the audio, then the fingerprint.
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): Are we ready?
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): You read the bill of sale first, yes? Ensure is no confusion.
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): Alright…
JUNO: You see her, Buddy?
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): (UNDER HER BREATH) Ah, yes. Over by the music machine, not moving.
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): Ah, u-uh– what?
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): Oh, forgive me, Razzy. A Solar colloquialism: if something is ‘by the machine and not moving,’ that means it’s straightforward. The money is to be transferred directly from your account to mine, and the key to the Curemother’s briefcase from my account to yours.
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): Ah. I-I have not heard this expression before.
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): And you never will again. I, Buddy Aurinko, consent to this transaction. And the fingerprint…
SOUND: BEEP.
Your turn.
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): A-ah, thank you.
JUNO: She’s moving. Buddy, you’ve got someone coming right at you!
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): I, Rasbach the Eldest, Agent Acquisitional of the Cerberus Board of Fresh Starts—
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): What’s your game, Rasbach?
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): My name? Miss Buddy, I was just saying…
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): Finish it, then. Quickly.
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): I conzent to this transaction.
SOUND: BEEP.
There. Is done.
JUNO: He did it? Wait, really?
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): It appears so, yes.
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): Well. The business well done.
JUNO: Buddy, look out! She’s right on top of you!
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): Well, Miss Buddy. It has been a plea— (CHOKING)
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): Rasbach!
JUNO (NARRATOR): The hooded woman ran up behind Rasbach and without a sound a knife appeared in her hand. Then it disappeared again… into Rasbach’s back.
RASBACH (FROM COMMS): Who… who?
VOICE 9 (FROM COMMS): (GROWLS)
SOUND: THUNK.
You! Give me the briefcase.
JUNO: Stall her. We’re on our way.
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): Stay where you are, the both of you.
You don’t have the key to this. What do you plan to do? Break it open?
VOICE 9 (FROM COMMS): If you’re real, just give it. If not… get out!
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): You could damage what’s inside if you do, and then what use will it be? You– sound familiar. Do I know you?
VOICE 9 (FROM COMMS): I said get out! (GROWLS)
SOUND: METAL CLANGS.
JUNO (NARRATOR): Then they were really at it. Hood took quick jabs, lots of ‘em, but Buddy was quick too, working that briefcase like a shield too precious for her attacker to stab. It was a good defense, but Buddy’s back was almost to the wall, and it wasn’t gonna be good much longer.
So Buddy raised her gun to turn the tide, but, with her focus split for just that half-second, Hood slashed at her fingers with the knife. Some people would’ve kept the briefcase instead of their hand, I thought. But Buddy wasn’t one of ‘em. She let go, and Hood had it before it hit the ground.
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): She has the briefcase, but I can’t get a clear shot with all these people!
JACKET (FROM COMMS): She’s running towards you, Juno. You know what to do.
JUNO (NARRATOR): My stomach and shooting-hand hardened. Still the same old Juno Steel, I thought. The Proctor, Swift, Pollock, Pilot, the Piranha – someone says shoot, and I say who’s next?
The thought made me sick. I was tired. I was just so, so tired of making the same old mistakes, again and again.
SOUND: RUNNING FOOTSTEPS.
VOICE 9: Get out of my way!
JUNO (NARRATOR): So I made a new one instead.
VOICE 9: Move!
JUNO: No!
JUNO & VOICE 9: (GRUNTS)
BUDDY (FROM COMMS): What do you think you’re doing, Juno? Do you want her to stab you?
SOUND: BLADE CLANG.
JUNO: (PAINED) Too late.
VOICE 9: Move or I’ll kill you.
JUNO: Lady, if you knew the kinda week I’ve had you’d understand why that doesn’t scare me much.
SOUND: LOUD BLASTER SHOT. CROWD SCREAMS, RUNS OUT.
JACKET: This is an emergency situation. All customers must leave immediately.
SOUND: CLATTERING.
JUNO (NARRATOR): The diversion was just enough to distract her for a second, so I tried to take a swing at her. She was too fast for me and my fingers missed her face but grabbed her scarf, and she… did not like that.
VOICE 9: (HOWLS)
JUNO (NARRATOR): I could see why she’d covered herself, because she had a look too memorable for covert ops: bright green hair and bright, wild eyes. But, I didn’t know her.
Buddy did, though.
BUDDY: Vespa?!
JUNO (NARRATOR): Green hair looked back, panicked, her eyes darting. She pulled so hard her sleeve came up and I saw what was on her wrist.
A debtor’s tag, for indentured servants. Just like that Outer Rim woman in the market. And hers had something written on it: Vespa I., five.
Vespa was in a cold sweat. She looked like she was gonna be sick.
VOICE 9 [VESPA]: Not… real… you’re not… real!
BUDDY: Vespa, it’s you! I thought you were—
VESPA: You’re not real! Get out of my head! (FERAL GROWL)
JUNO: (PAINED GRUNT)
SOUND: RUNNING FOOTSTEPS DEPARTING.
BUDDY: Vespa! Come back!
JACKET: Buddy… she’s gone.
BUDDY: She can’t be gone. I saw her, I swear, I saw her!
JUNO: You’re gonna need to slow down a little for the murder victim by the door, Buddy. Who the hell is Vespa?
BUDDY: She’s… a dead woman. I saw her… die. But now she’s—
Vespa! Vespa?!
SOUND: RUNNING FOOTSTEPS DEPARTING.
JUNO: Should we follow them?
JACKET: That depends. Are you injured enough that running will cause your organs to fall out of your body?
JUNO: Uh, not that bad, but pretty—
JACKET: Then we hide the briefcase and Rasbach’s corpse in the back room first. Then we follow. Quickly.
ALL SOUNDS: FADE OUT.
***
SOUND: FOOTSTEPS.
JUNO (NARRATOR): We searched the streets for an hour, but Vespa was gone.
SOUND: KEYS JINGLE. DOOR CREAKS.
JUNO: Ow, ow… ow, ow.
JACKET: You make that noise a lot, don’t you.
JUNO: Ohhh, sorry, does it bother you? Don’t mind me, I’m just the guy who’s been playing peekaboo with his large intestine for the past hour— OW, ow, ow.
JACKET: You said your organs would not fall out.
JUNO: It was a joke! Do big caveman get joke?
JACKET: I do not know. I have never met one.
BUDDY: Stop it. Immediately.
SOUND: DOOR OPENS.
Where’s the briefcase?
JACKET: We left it in the back room.
BUDDY: I remember you saying that, but it isn’t here. And neither is Rasbach.
Well. It seems our sale was completed after all.
JACKET: He took the Curemother?
JUNO: He didn’t die?!
JACKET: But more importantly: we have the money?
BUDDY: He couldn’t take it even if he wanted to. Both of us would have to consent to another transaction. All sales final.
JUNO: So it-it’s done. The sale’s done. It sounds like it… worked out, right?
BUDDY: Do business with a glorified slave-trader once, then wash my hands of it for good. That was the plan. So yes, everything went according to plan. But… Vespa.
Karma comes in all shapes, doesn’t it?
JACKET: Buddy…
BUDDY: Her debtor’s tag, Juno. What number was on it?
JUNO: What?
BUDDY: I know she had one. I’ve been thinking about it for an hour and that’s the only option that makes sense. Just… tell me what it said.
MUSIC: STARTS.
JUNO: It-it was, uh… five.
BUDDY: Five?
Five years… I can’t…
Thank you for not shooting her, Juno. I’ve already lost her once. Losing her again… I think that would be the end of me.
(DEEP BREATH) The number on the debtor’s tag is the number of years they’ve been… owned. Vespa has been in the Cerberus Province without rest for five years. It’s a miracle that the radiation hasn’t killed her, unless… five years… Vespa, where have you been?
JUNO (NARRATOR): You could tell from the look in Buddy Aurinko’s eyes that the number of years wasn’t what bothered her. It could’ve been five months or five weeks or five minutes, and all it would’ve amounted to is the same thing: she felt hope, and she was terrified of it. The presumed-dead were walking in the Cerberus Province, and that was a nightmare. Because there’s peace when hope finally dies, when it stops moving and you can nail the coffin shut.
Buddy looked like she’d won that peace the hard way.
But there was movement in that coffin now, something pounding the lid from the inside, and if the old hope was so hard to bury the first time… who knew what kind of damage it could do the second.

Victoria Grimes VI: Chaos
Tumblr media
Chapter Fifteen: Taking Charge, But No Bullshit
Masterlist
Warnings: some violence, and Gregory being an ass. Is that a warning? I feel like it should be...
Bamby
DPOV
I'd gone up with Vic and stayed with her while she explained to me that she and Maggie were going to talk to Gregory. But I hadn't cleaning up or anything. I didn't feel the need.
She'd also explained why she'd taken charge suddenly. Vic knew how her dad could be. She knew what he could and would do if his buttons were pressed in the wrong way. So she felt like it might be best if she pushed him to the side for a moment and stepped up to be the lead Deanna had wanted her to be.
It made enough sense, at least to me, which is why I'd let her go join Maggie while I waited down in the foyer for the two to finish with Gregory- who I'd already decided was an asshole.
Walking towards one of the front windows, I hadn't even realized Abraham was done here as well until he spoke.
"How long do you think Rick and Michonne been ugging bumplies?" he asked with a little grin.
Turning to him, I shrugged. "I don't know." it was true. I spent most of my time with Rick, and he'd never said anything. As far as I knew Vic didn't know either.
Standing from the chair he'd been on, he moved closer to me. "You and Vickie ever think about it? Really settling down? Doing what Maggie and Glenn are doin'? You ever think about havin' a pup?"
I didn't answer right away because Vic and I hadn't said anything to anyone about us trying to have a baby. I was beginning to wonder if we should. At least it might help keep her out of danger... But without really talking about it with her, I knew I shouldn't say anything.
Shaking my head, I lied. "Nah. We ain't ever talked about it." I told him before turning around and walking off. I'd wait for Vic somewhere else.
MPOV
I knocked lightly on the wooden door in front of me before opening it and stepping inside, Vickie right behind me. Gregory sat behind a wooden desk, turning to us as we stepped inside, a smile on his face.
"Gregory." I nodded.
"Natalie and Vivien, right?"
"Maggie and Victoria." I corrected.
He shrugged. "That's pretty close."
I shook my head, a polite smile tugging on my lips. "Not really."
He laughed getting up from his chair. "She calls them like she sees them. I like that. Come in, let's chat." he gestured for us to move ahead as he reached to close the door.
I looked over my shoulder at Vickie, who gave a short nod. Both of us moved forward, closer to the fireplace. Above it was a painting. I could tell it was old as I looked up at it, my eyes falling on the horse. It reminded me of one of the horses we'd had when I was growing up...
"Yeah. I came to this place once before, when it was a museum. With some Chamber of Commerce thing." Gregory started, moving to join us. "Love that painting." he gestured to the one Vickie and I were looking at. "I never figured it'd be mine, here it is. It's like it was waiting for me the whole time." he turned to us.
Looking away from the painting, I smiled sweetly at him. "Hmm."
I'm not an idiot, and neither is Vickie. It was obvious that Gregory was flirting with us, not that I was surprised. He seemed like the kind of guy that was used to getting his way, and what he wanted, no matter what it was. Unfortunately for him, Vickie and I didn't play that way.
Turning around, he moved to the couch, sitting in the middle, clearly leaving space for both Vickie and I to sit on either side of him. Instead we chose to sit on the two chairs opposite the lounge.
Moving on, Gregory began to talk. "Jesus told me your group saved Dr Carson. Obviously, a doctor's a rare commodity today, so I want to thank you for bringing ours back."
Vickie gave a short nod. "Our husbands saved him."
It had taken everyone some time to figure out Daryl had given Vickie a ring. They hadn't flaunted it or anything- they weren't like that- and they never really talked about what kind of relationship they had. So hearing her say husband let me know right away that she was sending Gregory a message to back off.
"I'll be sure to thank them, too." Gregory offered.
With that, I got to business. "This place, what you have here, has been here since the start?"
"That's right."
"And how..." I smiled lightly. "How is it... How have you survived here?" it wasn't an odd question. Our group had been in many communities before we finally found Alexandria.
He shrugged. "You're looking at how. I'm good at this. And I don't get hung up on the details." it wasn't an answer, but it's all he was giving before he went on. "Where you live, is it as nice as the Hilltop Colony?"
"It's just different." I told him.
"How do you feed everyone? Jesus aid you had land for gardens, but no crops."
"We just started planting." I explained.
"Planting what?"
"Cucumbers, tomatoes."
He shook his head. "No, crops. Soy, corn, hemp, sorghum."
"Garden stuff."
"But you have guns, so I assume you have a decent weapons cache."
"It's decent."
"And your infirmary, is it stocked?" he seemed to be getting a lot of information from us, it was time to turn the table.
"Is yours?" I asked. "We came here hoping to talk trade. Do you have enough here for that?"
He grinned cockily. "You see what I have here. You see what I've built. Jesus said that your food situation was challenged right now. You don't keep people fed, it comes apart. Let's speak the common tongue here, huh?" he leaned forward. "You don't have shit. Now, I'm happy to help. I'm a nice guy. But we can't just give things away for free. How's this? Since you can't offer much, I'll let your people work here for their share. You'd both be welcome additions to the community." he looked from Vickie to me. "Two smart and beautiful women. Getting back to that common tongue... I can tell ya, I can make it worth your while."
I leaned forward. "Let me stop you right there."
But he just went on. "Listen, honey-"
Vickie- who had been quite for some time now- cut him off. "Gregory, cut the bullshit. Stop coming on to us. Stop flirting. Just stop." he looked to her, a little surprised. "You don't have shit, either. Yeah, you have food. Yeah, you have some medicine. But let's face it, having food means nothing if you don't have protection. Without ammo, you're not worth much."
He leaned back. "Who said we don't have ammo?"
Ignoring his question, Vickie went on. "So let's speak the common tongue. We can help each other, if that's what you want."
But he just wouldn't give in. "What, are you gonna give us a bottle of aspirin and a box of bullets?" shaking his head, he got to his feet. "Thank you, Vivien, Natalie. Been a good talk." he said before moving towards his desk again.
I was up on my feet right away, following him. "We can help each other." I insisted.
"We're doing fine." he told me. "Are you?"
I could hear Vickie get up and move to me. "Come on." she spoke to me as she stood at the end on his desk, her back to Gregory. "He's just wasting our time."
After thinking it over for a moment, I nodded. "You're right." with that, we both turned for the door and left.
VPOV
I stood with Daryl behind dad, Glenn, Maggie, Abraham and Michonne off to the side. Maggie and I had told everyone what had gone down in Gregory's office, letting them know he wasn't interested in anything we had to offer. It was a lie, he'd shown not so subtle interest in Maggie and myself, but there was no need to tell everyone else that- especially Glenn and Daryl.
Once we told them everything, dad had sought Jesus out, needing proper answers.
"We want to generate trade, Gregory does." Jesus started. "But ammo isn't something we urgently need."
Dad shrugged. "Well, how's that?"
"The walls hold. We just brought in more medicine. Gregory wants the best deal possible."
Daryl, who hadn't stopped moving, stepped forward. "Yeah, well, we want things, too."
"We need food." dad noted. "We came all this way, we're gonna get it."
"I will talk to him and we will work this out." Jesus insisted. "Circumstances change. We're doing well now, and you will next. I will make him understand that. Can you give me a few days?"
Before anyone could say or do anything, I nodded, stepping up to stand in front of our group. "We can. But if you can't get Gregory to change his mind, we will."
Jesus looked at me, standing his ground as I stood mine.
When we were outside the walls of the Hilltop I'd made my mind up pretty quickly. I'd watched Jesus and the other's we brought back, and I decided to trust them- to a point. When I decided that, I also chose to step up and take charge. Dad wasn't exactly good with people, Maggie could be a little soft sometimes, and no one else was willing to do it, so I would.
Keeping our people's wants and needs in mind, I refused to show any sign of weakness. That's why I was hard on Gregory. That's why I was making threats now.
The front door of the building opened before Jesus could respond. One of the guys we'd brought back walked in, not looking very happy.
Right then, Gregory stepped out of his office. "What's wrong?"
They guy who'd just walked in came to a stop, looking at his leader. "They're back."
Gregory moved first, walking towards the front door with Jesus right behind him. I looked to dad, who nodded, before our group followed the others. We stayed back, watching Gregory and Jesus as they moved down the stairs and on to the dirt path, heading towards three people walking this way.
"Ethan, what happened to everybody else?" Gregory asked. "Where's Tim and Marsha?"
The guy walking in front of the group- Ethan- answered. "They're dead."
Gregory looked to the three people. "Negan?"
"Yeah." Ethan nodded.
Gregory was confused. "We had a deal."
"He said it wasn't enough." the other guy in the group spoke. "Was the drop light?"
"No." Gregory insisted.
"They still have Craig." the woman of the group told him.
"They said they'd keep him alive, return him to us, if I delivered a message to you." Ethan stepped up to Gregory.
"So, tell me."
Ethan rested a hand on Gregory's shoulder. "I'm sorry." then, moving quickly, he stabbed the older man.
That's when our people took action.
Dad and Michonne pulled Ethan away while Glenn, Maggie and Jesus helped Gregory down to the ground gently. Daryl, Abraham and myself got out our guns, ready to fight.
"Get off of me!" Ethan struggled against dad and Michonne. "I had to!" he pushed Michonne away and to the floor before moving to hit dad.
But dad was too fast and managed to knee Ethan to the ground. Once he was down, dad knelt over him, bringing his fist down on to Ethan's face, punching him over and over.
The other guy in Ethan's group moved to dad, grabbing him and pulling him off. But seeing my dad in danger, I rushed over, throwing my body on to the other guy, getting him off the ground and giving dad the chance to go back to Ethan.
The guy I was struggling with didn't seem to care I was a woman. Our struggling turned into a fight pretty quickly. We were kicking, punching, pushing and shoving all over the place, trying to get the upper hand. Anger was fuelling him, while I just relied on my skills and experience. Unfortunately I didn't notice the ditch in the ground.
As my foot landed, I rolled my ankle and fell. It dawned on me then that this guy could win...
Suddenly someone barged into the guy, knocking him to the ground. Looking over, I saw Abraham as he started to fight and struggle with the guy.
Daryl moved over to me. "You okay?" he asked, reaching forward, offering me a hand before helping me to my feet.
I nodded. "Fine. Help Abraham."
Not needing to be told twice, Daryl moved over and grabbed the guy who was on top of- and choking- Abraham. Daryl grabbed the guy's arm and broke it before pushing him away from Abe.
Reaching down to grab my gun off the ground where I'd dropped it, I instantly aimed it at Ethan, who was kneeling over my dad, a knife to his throat.
"Hey! Stay back!" Ethan warned. "Anybody who tries to stop me is killing my brother!"
Ethan didn't see her coming, but Michonne stepped up to him, hand on sword, ready. "Drop it."
Ethan looked up at her and that was enough to give dad his chance. I have no idea what he had in his hand, but whatever it was, dad used it to stab Ethan in the neck, causing blood to pour out of the wound and on to dad, killing Ethan.
Tossing the body aside, dad got to his feet, looking around as all the Hilltop people watched him. "What?" he shrugged.
"Ethan!" the other guy in the small group called, but didn't move as Daryl had his gun aimed at him. "You killed him."
"He tried to kill Gregory, then me." dad noted as if it was that simple.
The woman of the group stepped forward and swung her fist, hitting dad right in the face.
Michonne acted quickly, moving to the woman and shoving her to the ground. "Don't." she warned.
With all the commotion, the guards had come down from their posts. "Drop it now." one of the guards ordered, seeing us with our weapons aimed at his friends.
Dad shook his head, his gun now raised seeing as the guards had their spears aimed at us. "I don't think I will."
Jesus rushed into the middle of the gathering crowd. "Everyone, this is over! It's over. Ethan was our friend. But let's not pretend he was anything more than a coward, who attacked us. He did this. And these people stopped him."
When Jesus turned to him, dad nodded. "What can I do?"
"Put the gun away." Jesus told him. "You've done enough."
Just like that, dad lowered his gun, the rest of us following suit.
With that, Jesus turned to our people. "You need to know that things aren't as simple as they might seem. Just give me some time."
"Okay." I nodded, agreeing, looking around. "We'll be inside." I gestured to the house.
Seeing the scared looks on everyone's faces I had a feeling they'd like it best if they couldn't see us, if we disappeared. So going inside, away from the people, felt like our best option if we were to wait here. If they didn't want us here at all, well I guess we'd just leave. But these people needed us. Not in the way we'd thought and they realized, but I could see it now.

"That name." Abraham started, taking a seat in the large room we'd gather in. "Negan. Daryl, Sasha and I, we've heard it before."
Rick turned to him. "When?"
"Back on the road when we were headin' home after leading the herd away. We came across a group of guys on bikes, blocking the road. Wanted all our stuff." Abraham answered.
Vic looked up at me, frowning, confused.
Neither of us had told each other what had happened while we'd been apart then. I hadn't told her about the people in the forest or the men on the bikes. She hadn't told me about what went down at home.
We usually told each other everything, but we'd pushed it all aside and moved on right away. I didn't want to tell her, and I guess she felt the same way. After we'd talked about making a baby it set it all in stone. As far as I was concerned, what happened in the past, could stay there.
But as Abraham went on, I could see Vic silently asking me why I'd never said anything.
"Head honcho wanted us to take them back to Alexandria. Told us everything we had belonged to Negan. When I questioned him, he threatened to kill both Sasha and myself. Daryl used the RPG, blew them to pieces."
As everyone took in the new information, I watched Vic. She'd turned away to look at the ground as if she was thinking something through. No one said anything else. The room fell silent as we waited for Jesus or someone else to come give us some news, I couldn't stop wondering what she might be thinking about.
Stepping closer to her, I spoke quietly so only she could hear. "What are you thinkin'?"
She shrugged, speaking just as low. "Jesus said it himself, they don't have fighters. We do. We're all fighters. They need Negan gone. We need food. Maybe we should do it. Maybe we should get rid of Negan."
The doors opened as Jesus walked in. "Dr Carson was able to patch Gregory up. He's in pain, but he'll live."
"So, what happens now?" Michonne asked.
"Things like that don't usually happen here, but, uh, it's settled." Jesus shrugged.
"We heard the name 'Negan'." Rick stepped forward. "A while back, Daryl and Abraham had a run-in with his men. Who is he?"
"Negan's the head of a group of people he calls the Saviours. As soon as the walls were built the Saviours showed up. They met with Gregory on behalf of their boss. They made a lot of demands, even more threats. And they killed one of us." this got all our attention as Jesus went on. "Rory. He was sixteen years old. They beat him to death right in front of us. Said we need to understand, 'right off the bat'. Gregory's not exactly good at confrontation. He's not the leader I would've chosen, but he helped make this place what it is, and the people like him."
"He made the deal." Maggie finished, reading into what Jesus wasn't saying.
Jesus nodded. "Half of everything. Our supplies, our crops, our livestock, it goes to the Saviours."
"And what do you get in return?" Glenn asked.
"They don't attack this place. " Jesus answered simply. "They don't kill us."
"Why not just kill them?" I asked. I'd heard what Vic said, but I need to hear him say it.
Jesus scoffed lightly. "Most of the people here don't even know how to fight, even if we had ammo."
"Well, how many people does Negan have?" Rick seemed to be coming to the same conclusion that Vic had.
"We don't know." Jesus shrugged. "We've seen groups as big as twenty."
I shook my head. "Now, hold up. So, they show up, they kill a kid, and you give them half of everything? These dicks just got a good story. The bogeyman, he ain't shit."
"Well, how do you know?" Jesus didn't seem too sure.
"A couple months ago, we took his guys out PDQ." Abraham told him. "Left them in pieces and puddles."
"Yeah, we'll do it." I nodded. "If we go get your man back, kill Negan, take out his boys, will you hook us up? We won't food, medicine and one of them cows." I gestured to the window facing their farm animals.
Jesus looked to Rick, who shrugged. "Confrontation's never been something we've had trouble with."
"You set it up and we'll play it through." Vic stepped forward to stand next to me. "You saw what happened outside, and we weren't even prepared for that."
Jesus looked from Vic, to Rick and then back, before giving a short nod. "I'll take it to Gregory." he said before turning and leaving the room.

We stood on a balcony, looking down at the crowd of people gathered around the burning pile of wood, and Ethan's body which was set on top.
After hearing Abraham, and Jesus, and seeing everything Hilltop had, dad could see what I saw. These people were weak, and they needed protection. We were strong, and needed food. It just made too much sense not to make the deal we'd just made with Jesus.
"They have food, we don't." dad started, trying to explain the situation to the others. "We don't have enough of anything. Except us. What we can do." he turned to the rest of us. "This is the trade."
"It's gonna cost us something." Maggie noted, not liking the plan but not disagreeing with it either.
I'm not saying I enjoyed killing people, none of us did. If someone did, I'd be extremely worried and cautious when dealing with them. But over the years it had become clear. If you want to survive, you have to fight. If you decide to fight, you have to be willing to go all the way. If you don't go all the way, you end up dead.
Fighting for the people I loved, for the community and for our benefit made it okay with me. I'd been through the steps enough times to make myself numb enough to push through and do it again. So if we had to kill, I would do it, no questions asked.
The doors to the balcony opened before Jesus stepped out and joined us. "Gregory's up, he wants to talk." but when dad stepped forward, he stopped him. "To Maggie and Victoria. He wants to talk to Maggie and Victoria."
Maggie and I locked eyes. It was clear she didn't want to deal with Gregory again. But I simply gave her a look of determination, hoping she could see I was there for her.
Glenn turned to his wife. "You got this."
I nodded, moving to stand next to her. "We do."
Looking from me to Maggie, dad stepped forward. "Deanna was right about the two of you." he told us as he rested a hand on my shoulder. His eyes turned to me and I felt his pride give me a little more confidence.
Not needing anything else said, both Maggie and I turned to follow Jesus. As we walked, my eyes landed on Daryl, who was watching me carefully like he always was. I knew he'd be waiting for us to finish with this talk, ready to get out of here as soon as possible. It was clear he didn't exactly like this place too much.
"I'm sorry in advance, Gregory can be a real prick." Jesus told us.
"We know." Maggie noted as we disappeared into the house.
...
"Come in." Gregory called from inside the room.
Maggie opened the door and stepped inside first before I followed, shutting the door behind me. The room was dimly lit. The curtains drawn back over the windows, blocking out most of the natural light. The two lamps on either side of the bed provided a little more light which was softer and easier on the eyes. It gave an air to the room, making the place seem even older... and Gregory like an even bigger creep for some reason.
"Sorry for the gloom." he started. "They have me on these antibiotics that make me sensitive to the sunlight." he went on as we moved to stand at the end of his bed. "This is agony. It's like somebody's twisting my intestines with a cement mixer."
"It could have been worse. You're lucky we were here." Maggie noted. "Jesus told you about our offer?"
Gregory gave a short and weak nod. "He did. What makes you think you can do what we haven't done?"
"We've handled people like Negan." Maggie told him.
"How?"
I pulled out my knife, using it to catch the light of the lamps, looking down at the blade without a care. "They're dead." I shrugged.
Gregory turned to me, seeming both amused and a little scared. But he didn't say anything. He knew better than that.
Maggie went on. "We can get your man back."
"I don't know if Craig's worth the trouble. I mean, it's his brother who did this."
Maggie folded her arms over her chest, getting defensive. "He was fighting to save someone he loves. He was afraid."
"That makes him weak. Frankly, I don't know if I want him back in our gene pool."
"My dad used to tell me forgiveness takes more strength than anger." Maggie was big on family, we all were.
Gregory didn't seem to care. "Well, yeah, I guess. He's a hell of a cook. He makes these amazing baked eggs with green tomatoes."
Not interested in what he had to say, Maggie got to business. "You give us supplies. We'll save Craig and take care of Negan and the Saviours, permanently." she offered.
Gregory laughed. "I'm sorry, I find this whole conversation pretty funny. I mean, you baulked when I proposed that your people work for our supplies, but now... Isn't that exactly what's happening here? See, I had leverage and I used it. See, it wasn't personal."
"Yes. We need food, you have it." Maggie admitted. "We're willing to work for it."
"Then I'll get supplies for your people."
"Good." Maggie gave a short nod.
"I'll talk to Jesus and he'll make the arrangements." Gregory grinned. "See, this was fun. Exciting."
I stepped forward, a grin on my own lips. "Half."
Gregory watched as I stood right at the foot of his bed. "Excuse me?"
Maggie stood next to me. "Half of what you have."
"Right now." I added.
Maggie nodded. "We saw what happened out there. We heard what Ethan said. The Saviours' are expecting more. Soon enough, you'll have nothing. What happens then? Without ammo, without fighters... You'd be a dead man. So half of everything you have, right now, or the deal's off." a light smile played on her lips. "You see? We have leverage."
Gregory lifted his hands, applauding us softly. "Congratulations. You have yourself a deal."
Grin still firmly in place, I kept my eyes on the old man. "Now wasn't this fun? Exciting?"
"Do you want anything else?" he asked, amusement gone from his tone. "Kidney, maybe?"
"Not that." Maggie shook her head. "But I do want something."
RPOV
Michonne, Jesus and I were putting the supplies in the RV. Maggie, Glenn and Vickie were somewhere else, while Abraham and Daryl went to get the other guy that had been with Ethan.
"Even Negan didn't get this much up front." Jesus told me as we passed each other.
Seeing Daryl and Abraham leading the guy towards me, I came to a stop and turned to him.
"What?" he was clearly not happy. I didn't blame him though.
"Jesus said you've been taking supplies to Negan since the beginning. We're gonna get Craig back." I told him.
"The only way to get Craig back is to bring them Gregory's head." he noted.
I nodded. "We're gonna get Craig back."
"How?"
"We need to know what you know about Negan's compound. We need your help. We need you to come."
It took a moment. He looked around at first, looking at his people and then at ours before finally turning back to me and nodded. "Yeah. Okay." was all he said before he walked off.
Daryl stepped up to me before I could move. "Where's Vic?"
"I don't know." I answered honestly before moving to go grab a basket of supplies and take it to the RV.
Jesus walked beside me, carrying the last of the supplies. "You got room for one more, right? I mean, we're talking about righting the world here. Plus, you still have my knives." he added as he stepped in to the RV not really giving me a choice.
Michonne stood by the door waiting, so I moved to her. "Hey, you up for this?"
"It's gonna be a fight." she noted.
"We'll win." I told her. "We have to."
She nodded. "We'll win."
VPOV
Once Maggie and Glenn were done with the doctor, I'd slipped past them and into his trailer. It was silly, I know. I could have told them, I mean they're my best friends. But I had this gut feeling something was up, and I needed to talk to a professional before I decided to do anything else.
"Hello?" I called out.
Harlan poked his head around the corner, looking surprised to see me. "Victoria, right?"
I nodded. "Yeah, uh... Call me Vickie."
"Okay." he walked around coming to stand in front of me. "So what can I do for you, Vickie?"
Nerves bubbled inside me. I found my eyes looking everywhere but at him as my fingers began to fidget with the hem of my shirt. "I was wondering if you could, uh... Could you have a look at my, um... I wanna know-"
Stopping me from making a bigger fool of myself, Harlan gave a small smile. "I know the worlds turned upside down, but that doesn't change a doctor's ethic's. If you need to tell me something, I'm bound by confidentiality."
Hearing him say that made me feel a little better, even though I knew there wasn't anything stopping him from telling people stuff anyway. But still, I found my words flowing a little easier now. "My husband and I are trying to have a baby, but I don't know if everything's okay... You know... Down there."
"Ah." he nodded, seeming to understand. "Well, is there any reason why you think there may be something wrong?"
"Yeah, um... I've been through a lot. Physically. I've done so much damage to my body, I just don't know what's working right and what's not, anymore." I shrugged.
"Okay. It's hard to figure these things out for sure these days, but hopefully an ultrasound will tell us something. I'll at least be able to see what we're working with."
The nerves began to bubble again but I found myself nodding. "Okay."
"Great." he smiled kindly. "Why don't you follow me?"
...
"I'm sorry." Harlan's voice rang in my head as I leaned against Daryl, his arm around my shoulder. "I'm not saying it's impossible. But it is very unlikely that your body will be able to hold a baby... I'm so sorry."
Everyone had been wondering where I'd been while they were stocking the RV full of supplies. I'd lied, telling them I was in the bathroom, checking to make sure I hadn't been hurt in the fight. I hadn't even told Daryl the truth.
Now that I knew the chances of me getting pregnant were extremely low- like I had a better chance at randomly making a cure to kill all walkers- I felt as if I'd let him down. He'd been the one to say the words. He'd been the one to say he wanted a child. So the fact we might not be able to, and it was because of me, had my heart ache.
Sitting across from me, I watched as Glenn handed Michonne the ultrasound photo of his and Maggie's baby. He didn't say anything He just gave a small smile. Michonne smiled as well as she looked down at the picture, hope growing in her eyes. When she was done she looked up at Daryl and myself and handed the picture over.
Daryl took it, holding it so we could both see the tiny figure that was currently growing inside my best friend. His arm pulled me tighter as he pressed his lips to the top of my head.
It was too much. Seeing the tiny soon-to-be baby. My heart ached even more, which made me feel guilty, which just had me hurting deeper.
But I fought through the pain and looked up at my best friends. Glenn smiled at me and seeing him this happy healed my heart enough for me to smile back at him.
