Im übrigen existieren auch mindestens 2 Selbstportraits von Schiller - der hat nämlich 1786 (da war er 27), als er noch in Dresden wohnte, ein kleines satirisches "Buch" verfasst, das eigentlich nur aus freundeskreis-internen Insidern besteht - handschriftlich und mit eigenen Illustrationen versehen. Ich finde gerade nur die Urfassung (da sind die Illustrationen teilweise verblasst/verwischt), aber es gibt auch eine restaurierte Fassung, vielleicht mach ich da auf @justfritzschillerthings mal einen ganz eigenen Post zu...

jedenfalls hier die beiden Selbstportraits aus der Urfassung (einsehbar in der Yale Library):

im ersten Bild tritt er, wenn ich mich recht erinnere, als Apotheker auf (er war ja auch irl Arzt immerhin) und hat meiner Meinung nach schon doch (dunkel-)rote Haare

im zweiten Bild steht er auf dem Kopf und die Haare sehen eher hell/blond aus, sind aber natürlich auch sehr verblasst... sportlich auf jeden Fall! ;)

Stimmt es, dass Anton Graff seinem Portrait-Schiller rote Haare malte, nachdem der echte nicht pünktlich hatte zahlen können? Falls das stimmt, habt ihr Quellen dazu parat? Ich finde gerade keine und bekomme das Gefühl, ich hatte einen Fiebertraum X)

Also, damit wir einmal alle sehen, worum es geht—das hier ist das Bild, das Graff von Schiller gemalt hat:

Also zuerstmal möchte ich sagen, dass das jetzt nicht die röteste Darstellung von roten Haaren ist, die ich je in meinem Leben gesehen habe. Auf diesem Bild kann man zwar tatsächlich, mit etwas Fantasie, einen leichten Rotstich erkennen, aber auf anderen Fotos sieht es auch wieder anders aus, in echt habe ich das Bild noch nicht gesehen. Aber für eine hinterlistige Racheaktion scheint es mir doch sehr dezent.

Und auch sonst klingt es, ehrlich gesagt, ein bisschen nach urban legend. Andererseits wäre es dem Zeitgeist ja schon zuzutrauen, man denke an Tischbein und Goethes linke Füße...

Allerdings habe ich dazu nichts gefunden, auch nicht in meiner Schillerbibel (Schillers Gespräche, Hrsg. Biedermann). Im Gegenteil scheinen sich Graff und Schiller ganz gut verstanden zu haben, auch nach Fertigstellung des Porträts, er hat z.B. Krankenbesuche bei Schiller gemacht (was there any other kind). Und außerdem war es auch eher umgekehrt, Graff hat nämlich ganze 5 Jahre (!) gebraucht um das Bild fertigzustellen und Schiller hat sogar mal bei ihm angefragt, ob er das Bild nicht vielleicht schon vorläufig "leihen" könnte um es Lolo (also seiner Frau Charlotte) zu Weihnachten zu schenken, weil die anscheinend sehr heiß darauf war. (Hat Graff aber nicht gemacht, ein Jahr später war es dann aber fertig.) —Okay, ich schreibe das jetzt nicht nochmal um, aber tatsächlich hat Schiller dieses Porträt wohl nie bekommen. Er hat erst 1794 eine Kopie davon erhalten, die Dora Stock, eine befreundete Künsterlin aus Dresden (Körners Schwägerin) für ihn angefertigt hat. Und das war übrigens auch dann, als Schiller auch Goethe eine Kopie davon geschickt hat!

Die Sache mit den Haaren erst mal ignorierend (ich komme da nochmal drauf zurück, ich wollte da schon immer mal etwas klarstellen), gibt es sogar einen recht herzigen Bericht über die Porträtsitzung, die ich hier niemandem vorenthalten will:

"Die größte Not, zuletzt aber auch die größte Freude hat mir aber doch das Porträt Schillers gemacht; das war ein unruhiger Geist, der hatte, wie wir sagen, kein Sitzfleisch. Nun liebe ich es zwar sehr, wenn die Personen mir gegenüber nicht wie Ölgötzen regungslos dasitzen, oder wohl gar interessante Gesichter schneiden, aber Freund Schiller trieb mir die Unruhe doch zu weit; ich war genötigt, den schon auf die Leinwand gezeichneten Umriss mehrmals wieder auszuwischen, da er mir nicht still hielt. Endlich gelang es mir, ihn in eine Stellung festzuhalten, in welcher er, wie er versicherte, sein Lebtag nicht gesessen, die aber von den Körnerschen Damen für sehr angemessen und ausdrucksvoll erklärt wurde. Er sitzt bequem und nachdenklich, den zur linken Seite geneigten Kopf auf den Arm stützend; ich meine, den Dichter des Don Karlos, aus welchem er mir während der Sitzung vordeklamierte, in einem glücklichen Moment aufgefasst zu haben" — Anton Graff 1786, nach F. Und dann zurück zu den Haaren: Weil da manchmal wohl noch Unklarheit herrscht... Schiller hatte rote Haare. Punkt. Jede Quelle beschreibt ihn so. Mit allem, was dazu gehört: Sommersprossen, blasse Haut, ... Eine Auswahl:

"...das rötlichgelbe Haar, das seine Stirne ummalte...", "die rötlichen Haare...", "Die Augenbrauen waren rot...", "...die Wangen blass, eher eingefallen als voll und ziemlich mit Sommerflecken besät; die Augenlider waren meistens inflammiert, das buschige Haupthaar war rot, von der dunklen Art...", "Rotes Haar, das ihm, weil er noch im Negligé war, wild um den Kopf flog...", "Sein großes, mageres Gesicht mit Sommersprossen bedeckt und von dem struppigen rötlichen Haare beleuchtet..."

Der Grund, warum Schiller auf keinen seiner zeitgenössischen Porträts (deutlich erkennbar) so dargestellt ist, ist, ich nenne es mal: Rote-Haare-Erasure. Rote Haare zu haben war einfach ein Makel, und das gute an Porträtmalerei ist, dass man gar kein Photoshop und keine Beautyfilter braucht, um jemanden ein ganz klein wenig ans gängige Schönheitsideal anzupassen.

Und wem das noch nicht reicht, dem möchte ich diese Schillerlocken (nein, nichts zu essen diesmal) zur Betrachtung und zur eigenen Evaluation ans Herz legen:

Schoethe raising a child headcanons

Okay, so @poesia-storica and I came up with this Schoethe concept in which Goethe and Schiller were secretly married and they (again, secretly) adopted Schiller's son Karl.

Goethe and Schiller only adopt Karl because adopting all of the Schiller children would draw too much attention.

They raise Karl very well, sometimes a little too well.

Charlotte, of course, is completely oblivious to the fact that Fritz is secretly raising Karl with Goethe. So when Karl runs up to his mom yelling that he has two daddies, she looks at him in utter confusion.

Cue Schiller saying that Goethe is the godfather, and nothing more.

Everyone else (except Christiane) knows the truth. And they're fine with it.

Karl does tend to run off. A LOT. So his dad and stepdad naturally came up with a solution: a leash child safety tether. Which of course both JoWo and Fritz are adamant about, but it's for the best.

Karl definitely tries to drag whoever is holding the tether along with him. When that thing's on, he pulls. Hard.

Also that kid just straight up runs off if neither of his fathers are keeping an eye on him in a public setting.

Everyone in Weimar thinks that these two men just running around and looking for this small child is completely normal.

Karl is definitely one step ahead of his dads. He is a manipulative little shit yet he is very adorable and sweet.

And by manipulative he will do that thing where small children lie and the parents believe them.

He also swears. @poesia-storica had this thought of Karl hearing Schiller cursing and deciding to use the word. All. The. Time. Poor Goethe has no idea what to do anymore.

So one day...

Karl: Scheiße.

Goethe and Schiller: *gasp*

Goethe: Don't use that word, Karl.

Karl: What word?

Goethe: *gives Schiller a "please help me" look*

Schiller: *whispering* I think he knows which one.

Karl: You mean scheiße?

Goethe: ...

Schiller: *sigh* Yes. That one. But don't ever use it again. We can, because we are responsible adults who can watch our mouths and know when and when not to use it.

Karl: I'm responsible too...

Schiller: You just swore twice.

Karl: SCHEISSE

Goethe: Oh no. Child is broken...guess we messed up.

Schiller: He's grounded.

I can imagine them in some public setting or something and Karl just suddenly runs around swearing his head off and Goethe and Schiller are mentally facepalming.

That doesn't mean that Karl isn't a good kid; of course he is. And Goethe and Schiller love him very much. They're just protective.

Also whenever his dads have a fight, Karl just goes up to Fritz, hugs his leg (refusing to let go) and just says, "I think Daddy likes you as much as I do. Probably as much as I like pudding."

Karl is not only cute and mischievous, he's great emotional support.

Overall, our favorite literary husbands love their son way too much and he loves them back, perhaps even more.

Schoete-Summer, part 1: Abkühlung

"It's so warm" Schiller wailed.

Goethe only rolled his eyes at the others dramatism. "You're not sick for once and can breathe freely, and the heat is what you worry about?" He asked amusedly.

"If it gets any warmer I'll just get sick again"

"Fritze, you're exaggerating"

"Am not"

Like a truculent kid, he pulled his sunhat farther into his face, and the only thing visible under the long brim were his pouting lips.

Goethe laughed. "How about cooling off your feet and legs in the Ilm?"

"Hm" Schiller shoved his hat up again. "Tempting"

"Come on" Goethe stood up and then grabbed onto Schiller's hand to prompt the other to stand up as well. They'd been at Goethes' at the Frauenplan so the walk down to the park was a short one. After they had sat down under a tree and neither of them wasted any time pulling off shoes and socks, rolling up their pants.

"Oh, this is a lot more manageable" Schiller said with a smile as soon as he had sat down on the edge, his feet dangling in the water.

"I told you, you were being dramatic"

"You love me for it"

Goethe laughed. "That I do"

Jo, Schiller war ja "Arzt" (idk bout you but i wouldn't trust him with my life) und hat sich selbst meistens Wassersuppe mit Brot und Wein verschrieben. The more you know.

Fox's basic writing tips

Here we go, people.

This refers mainly to fanfic but it also applies to other writing.

Also, disclaimer, my credentials are a couple thousand words of fanfic and a whole lot of salt, a grain of which you should take this advice with. Some things are a matter of style and that I can't stand them doesn't mean they're objectively bad.

And like, whatever you do, do what makes you happy. If you don't want to follow my advice, by all means don't.

Now. Let's go.

1. Edit your stuff. Seriously.

I know the urge is strong to just post that 600 word one shot you just word-vomited at 3am without editing but please, do all of us a favor and edit your damn fic.

Your writing isn't bad, it's just badly edited. The first draft always sucks but editing can and will do wonders.

If I posted R&L as I write it, I'd also physically cringe when reading it.

1.a. This also applies to smut. This especially applies to smut.

2. Get a beta-reader.

Find someone to give you a second opinion on your writing. Ask a friend, a mutual, someone in the same fandom, your sister, your English teacher, a rando on the street. Obviously it's ideal if they know stuff about writing, too, but even if not they will find mistakes you didn't catch and (hopefully) stop you from using the phrase "cerulean orbs" or "slick channel".

3. Don't blindly follow others.

There are certain tropes or phrases or ways of writing certain things that have kind of been established in fanfic writing and everyone uses them, regardless of the fact that they just sound awful. Examples include comparing eyes to gemstones, various horrible euphemisms for penis, and unreasonable amounts of smirking. You can totally make use of these things, we all pick up things from the stuff we read, but be mindful of it.

3.a. If you're writing in a language that's not your native one, look up the translation of words before you copy them from others.

(I firmly believe "pistoning hips" wouldn't be a thing if people actually did this.)

4. Repeating words is not a deadly sin, but bad synonyms are.

Of course you don't want to use the same word five times in three sentences but for the love of God keep the synonyms at bay. This especially applies to epithets ("the tall one").

4.a. This also applies to names.

This especially applies to names. I know it's hard to write about two people with the same pronouns but epithets like "the tall one", "the blue eyed woman", "the older man", even "the human" do not sound any better than using the name thrice. Trust me on this.

4.b. This also applies to smut.

This especially applies to smut. Just use the word "cock". Please.

(I am willing to make a part 2 just on how to write smut, hmu.)

5. Only describe what's relevant.

This is a big one in my opinion. People in fanfic tend to over describe characters. We know what these characters look like. It's fanfic. You don't have to tell the reader that Fritz Schiller has red hair or that Harry Potter has green eyes. We all know that.

Only describe what your POV character notices.

So when does it make sense to mention these things? When your POV character notices them - when they meet a character for the first time, or when they're longingly staring at them getting lost in thought instead of paying attention to what the other's saying.

This points also ties back to what I said under 4. about epithets. There is no point in referring to someone as "the blond guy" unless he's in a situation where his hair color is relevant - for example when he's surrounded by gingers or when the setting sun is making his hair look like glowing gold. There is no point in mentioning someone's eye color every time you talk about their facial expression - just let them roll their eyes, you don't have to point out that they're the color of warm honey (especially if it happens repeatedly; we know the eye color, we really do, you don't have to keep mentioning it).

If we know their name, use their name. The only reasonable situation to refer to someone as "the dark haired police man" is when the POV character doesn't know the dude's name and has to distinguish him from the blond policeman and the dark haired other man.

And while I'm at it, eye color is the most overrated feature. Unless you're actively staring into someone's eyes because you're angry or crushing, you don't pay attention to it. It doesn't tell you shit about people either. It's much more interesting if their eyeliner is smeared or their eyes are swollen or sunken in or surrounded by laughing wrinkles or if they're wearing fake lashes or glasses or if they have a tiny mole next to the corner of their eye.

entirely unasked for, read books 2017, first half.

Unter der Sonne (Daniel Kehlmann, 1998/2008): Daniel Kehlmann is, for now, my favourite germanspeaking writer (style-wise, no worries Fritz) and I started the year with reading some of his early works I hadn’t read yet. Unter der Sonne is a collection of short stories and as almost all of Kehlmanns narrations they are always very real but shifting into a dream, or it feels like it at least, always on the verge of a nightmare. one could call it surreal realism? or very real surrealism? it’s very hard to put into words but oh boy, I just love it so much. so I have already read Ruhm (Fame), a later collection of short stories and I liked the overall compilation of those more, especially because the stories were slightly linked to each other. But still Unter der Sonne was brilliant as ever! / English title: this has not been translated I think?

Der Verbrecher aus verlorener Ehre (Friedrich Schiller, 1786): this was… quite wild to say the least. / English title: The Criminal of Lost Honour

Du hättest gehen sollen (Daniel Kehlmann, 2016): I love this little novel. It’s definitely one of my favourites by Daniel Kehlmann. And i really need to reread it! The mathematics mysticism is strong in this one. Das Geodreieck! / English title: You should have left

Maria Stuart (Friedrich Schiller, 1800): i feel terrible but the best thing about this book, which i bought at the flea market, is still that it came with a self made book mark -a ladie’s leg in a pantyhose and a very fancy high heeled shoe, probably cut out from a magazine and strengthend with adhesive tape- which must be, judging by the look of it, at least 60 years old, if not older (the book is from 1939). but apart from that, I also liked the play itself! but it has already been several months and to say anything specific about it now I would have to ask Evelyn Hamann to give a short recap of the bisher gesendeten Folgen. “Auf dem Landsitz Fortheringhay…” 

Die Wahlverwandschaften (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1809): i was meaning forever to read this and it was so beautiful, and sad! :( not even to speak of the quite obvious Schiller parallels. :(( and also, if you ever decide to read Die Wahlverwandschaften, please do so while listening to Die Ballade von Wolfgang und Brigitte by Wir sind Helden! / English title:  Elective Affinities

Beerholms Vorstellung (Daniel Kehlmann, 1997): this was Daniel Kehlmann’s first novel and ironically the last left that I hadn’t read. Compared to later works it maybe wasn’t as strong and the style not as developped but still very, very good. It’s about a magician, that is illusionist, who isn’t satisfied with his own skills because he himself still is aware that it’s all just tricks and illusion and thus tries to master his tricks so perfectly and blindly that he can become oblivious to the procedure in order to become a Real Magician and in the progress partially loses grip of reality. I mean… that idea alone is fascinating.

Cornelia Goethe (Sigrid Damm, 1992): Sigrid Damm deserves a medal for writing honest, inspiring and heartwrenching biographies about people (esp. women) we know so very little about! 

Heinrich von Kleist (Dora Wentscher, 1956): this was a true lucky find at the flea market, I am still amazed. Oh Berndi!

Wallensteins Lager (Friedrich Schiller, 1798): this is merely a prologue to the other two parts of the Wallenstein triology so i really need to go on reading the other two (main) parts. / English title: Wallenstein’s Camp

Sprachwandel (Rudi Keller, 1990): How and that language changes is something that amazes me to no ends and I have been musing about that subject for years now but I have never actually read anything about it by someone who actually knows what they’re talking about. So it was amazing and interesting and I am (still) so thrilled by this. Language is like the most amazing yet inapprehensible thing ever?! / English title: On Language Change

Maurice (E. M. Forster, 1914/1971): this book stole my heart all over again after having seen the film already some years ago. like seriously, I am internally crying tears of joy ever since. please read this! it will not diasappoint, and Christopher Isherwood himself was a fanboy okay?

Goodbye to Berlin (Christopher Isherwood, 1939): talking of the devil-this book is amazing! it’s like a mosaicy glimpse into pre-nazi Berlin, or rather Berlin right before turning and already turning into nazi Berlin. despite all, this book made me want to be there myself with all these people.

Die Physiker (Friedrich Dürrenmatt, 1962): that was a weird and funny one. and not at all what I expected. I had always heard that even people who had to read it in school had liked it but apart from that knew nothing about it. / English title: The Physicists

Christopher and his kind (Christopher Isherwood, 1976): this is the non-fiction version of Christopher Isherwoods time in Berlin with its gay community. mainly, he is on the run from the nazis with his boyfriend Heinz. very sad and also a bit wild.

Winnie-the-Pooh (A. A. Milne, 1926): I might be identifying with Eeyore A Little Too Much. But really what a cute and clever book! (It made me think in Capitalised Expressions for days.)

The Importance of being Earnest (Oscar Wilde, 1895): i don’t know why i waited so long to read Oscar Wilde but omg, that was hilarious and amazing!!

Mr Norris Changes Trains (Christopher Isherwood, 1935): i didn’t enjoy this as much as Goodbye to Berlin and Christopher and his Kind, the entire story is somewhat sinister and the characters not really likeable somehow? but then I also read that Isherwood himself didn’t like it before i even started reading so I think I was also a bit biased. but it’s also very interesting to see how his style developped in contrast to the masterpiece I think Goodbye to Berlin is

Relato de un náufrago (Gabriel García Márquez, 1970): earlier this year I started reading Cien Años de Soledad (100 Years of Solitude) by García Márquez but stopped half way through because it confused the hell out of me and I somehow didn’t connect to the characters at all. I don’t know if it was for the Spanish or simply for the sheer amount of characters -of which half have the same name?!- and the large time span the novel is narrated on? anyway I wanted to give García Márquez another chance and picked something lighter, shorter and with less people - only one to be precise! And I enjoyed it very much! / English title: The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor

Schillers Schwester Christophine (Annette Seemann, 2009): Christophine (Fene) was two years older than her little brother Fritz and since they both were much older than their younger siblings they were an inseparable duo in their childhood days. It is also said that Christophine’s character was a model for a lot, if not most, of Schiller’s female heroines. But as biographies about women in history go they can be a tough thing and this one makes no exception - to the point where it becomes almost unbearable! I got teary eyed reading this in the subway; but then I also might be caring about the Schillers A Little Too Much. / I highly doubt this has been transated.

Progress in Sign Language Research (Schulmeister/Reinitzer, 2002): blame (that is thank) Fargo and Russel Harvard that I suddenly became aware of how there’s an entire different set of languages to learn and learn about! The craziest thing was that while I was reading this very book (at work, sometimes there’s just not that much to do) an actual Deaf Person came to the cinema and asked if we were showing movies with english subtitles (which we don’t). That is he came up to me and said “deaf” and gestured writing in his hand and I then handed him a notepad on which we had our conversation. But everything happened so fast and there was another costumer waiting, and I was so taken aback, (I misspelled english as englisch how awkward!) but I had that book literally laying there next to me on the counter. I still wish I could have showed him. :/ I also regret not having been able to look up some cinemas for him that show movies with english subtitles. I hope he found one anyway!

A Room with a View (E. M. Forster, 1908): so after Maurice I wanted to read more by Forster and he did not disappoint! i had a lot of other stuff on my mind while reading this so it lost me a bit in the middle but totally got my attention back towards the end and i’m definitely going to reread this some day. and I simply cannot believe how wonderfully fantastical the Emersons are! although i’m yet to read Walden I am already contemplating putting “mistrust all enterprises that require new clothes” on my wardrobe as well-what a thing to do lmao! naturally I immediately watched the film after finishing the book and it was also nice seeing the entire Maurice cast again, only in different roles, haha!

Schiller selbst war hochvergnügt, und in seiner Freude, die er den Schauspielern wiederholt kund gab, fügte er zu dem Mahle im zweiten Akt noch einige Flaschen Champagner hinzu, die er selbst unter dem Mantel auf das Theater trug. Beinahe aber hatten sie Unheil angerichtet; denn da Vohs, aufgeregt von lebhaftem Spiel, schnell ein paar Gläser hinunterstürzte, bekam er den Anflug eines Räuschchens, so daß es sehr gut war, daß der Akt bald schloß, und er Zeit gewann, sich wieder zu sammeln.

Einmal traf ich auf seinem Schreibtisch – er hatte meist wenige Bücher um sich her – Klopstocks Oden an – den Karlsruher Nachdruck! – Als ich sie eröffnete fand ich mit Befremdung dass eine nicht gar unbeträchtliche Anzahl mit großen, quer ins Kreuz gezogenen derben Tintenzügen rein durchgestrichen war.
