give me the blackbeard facts stat!
oh. well um. okay so the first one i must state as always that this is just like. an interest for me so anything i say could be varying levels of historically accurate on top of the fact that like. blackbeard as a person is so surrounded by tall tales and the like that anything anyone says about him can be varying levels of true uhhhh also most of my knowledge comes from when iwas reading the smithsonian magazine in history class today.
I've heard a few accounts that blackbeard's name was edward thatch and not edward teach, the latter was like a typo in a paper or something that got spread-- tho no one knows if that was his name at birth or what. generally no one knows where exactly he came from before being a famous pirate
I've seen varying accounts of how long he was actively a pirate but the rage is somewhere between 2-5 years? uhh he only became really famous like a year before his death so . pirates. die young amirite
regarding stede bonnet. so best i can tell the actual history between the two of them is that bonnet arrived in nassau (pirate base that blackbeard was at) after being attacked by a spanish ship (omg this happens in the show! sorta) and being severely injured
the people at nassau were like yup you can have the ship so blackbeard took it. cant remember what happened to the crew but stede bonnet did stay with the ship while blackbeard was captaining it for a good while
the ship did have a library. the revenge, that is
!!! blackbeard actually captained the revenge for a while before he got the ship that he was famous for, the queen anne's revenge
it also wasn't until after he threw bonnet and his crew onto a small island (;]) that he started being known by the name blackbeard
uhhhhh one of the most well known sources on pirates or something was this book written sometime in the 1700s by some guy that was probably a pseudonymn and has some super accurate info and some absolute bullshit. where was i going with this? i have no idea actually. it existed oh! wait it wasnt the boook
anyways episode four of ofmd is titled 'discomfort in a married state' which is from some historical account of stede bonnet trying to figure out why he left his family to do piracy and one of the reasons was cited as 'discomfort in a married state'
i've seen multiple people state that there are no actual firsthand accounts where blackbeard killed anyone which is like. ?? but its interesting to see that that particular part of the show does have historical basis
