I think what we're honestly witnessing is orchestral music being, for lack of a better word, humanized. Being made accessible and people responding in earnest. At these events, people are able to lose their shit to the music, so they DO! They don't have to dress formally and sit perfectly still or spend a fuck ton of money.
In a (typical) concert hall, you don't participate in the music or get to respond to the emotions it evokes except for a silent tear and a respectful applause at the appropriate time. It's heavily restricted by socioeconomic status--you have to buy the tickets, wear formal attire, and either live in an area with an orchestra or be able to get to one.
It was especially cool to see the performers in the last video also wearing casual clothes. Their performance also wasn't perfect, and it didn't matter! I feel like this really shows that the barriers to entry in instrumental performance don't need to be the thing that holds the art form in the past.
There is a lot of concern about classical music dying out, especially because more and more people can't afford to see it and just don't care to. But from these, it looks like classical had nothing to worry about as long as it evolves.
It's really nice to see people embracing it.
I adore this recent trend (if that's the right word) of letting an orchestra play classical music on a festival. It's magical to see thousands of festival-goers going absolutely wild on Beethoven. Mosh/circlepits, crowd surfing. It's wonderful to see the orchestra and the audience having the time of their lives.
