The fact that some people think that just because something is out there it's a free for all deal, you can do with it what you want. Well newsflash assholes, YOU CAN'T!

These things take time to create! Doesn't matter if it's 10 minutes, 2 hours, 3 days or 5 weeks! It's time we could have spent doing something else. Instead, we do something we love and then share it FOR FREE for you to enjoy and daydream about, something to be entertained by!

Tumblr doesn't pay us for our work, and neither do you! So taking someone else's work, posted FOR FREE, claiming it's yours, using it without consent (the hell, using it as a whole because we don't give concent!) is (I'm being as kind as I can here) - disgusting behavior.

I didn't think that in 2024 and especially in this fandom, where there's plenty of space for everyone, I'd need to preach about respecting the writers who are here to bring you good vibes!

The fact that I keep seeing stolen works (fics, gifs) keep hearing about it, see it happen, having it almost happento me? It begs the question, what kind people lurk on this fandom? Like, for real, do you not have some kind of common sense?

This isn't high school, where you go on Google and take something to get a high grade. This is fandom! It's a space where we're uniting to bring each other some joy, create and entertaining each other, SUPPORT each other and talk about the things we love!

And for the people looking to profit from fandom? To make youselves popular by using other people's creations? You all are nasty pieces of work! It's very apparent you haven't had to work hard to create something, or have no understanding of the words "fandom" & "creating"

I absolutely hope your pillow in never cold and your armpits are forever wet and smelly, you all truly deserve it!

It’s unfortunate that people on here are just so nasty. And it’s honestly why you’re seeing the fandom continue to shrink. I don’t really understand what people’s goals are. Other than being mean for the sake of being mean.

You curate your own space, and when you run all the writers off this site, what fandom experience are you going to have left? Think about it.

It makes me not even want to be on this site anymore (I’ve already been limiting my time on, which I’m sure many have noticed). And I’m sure I’m not the only one on here feeling this way as well.

I’d just say check on your favorite authors, because it definitely hurts when one (like Emmy and many others at this point) that we all love gets quite literally run off the site. And I’m sure it also prompts some to reevaluate whether or not this is a safe or fun space anymore.

Especially when this is someone (Emmy) who has always been kind to those around her (myself included), and is running her own business and pregnant. She should be ENJOYING this season, and some people just have literally no sense of decorum or common decency.

Remember that WE ARE ALL HUMANS ON HERE.

PSA for anyone who likes biggering and dread valley exodus. absolutely do not ever comment this on one of my other UNRELATED fics, because i will abandon both biggering and dread valley exodus if someone does something like this again. i didn't know that i would have to say this, but i guess i do 💀

i do not care if you like one of my fics more than the others, this is really rude. i don't really care that it happened on my fic, but i do Not want commenters who do this to do it in other, smaller writers' fics.

i write tens of thousands of words in multiple fandoms for free. you don't decide which of those fandoms or fic ideas are better than any other. popularity is arbitrary and heavily based on fandom size and activity, rather than the quality of the fic. just because asoiaf has a larger, more active fandom than some others, does Not mean i will update my popular asoiaf fics more than the other ones.

I love like... everything about him. Roy Harper in the golden/silver ages? Absolute baby, I adore him. He had SO much trust in Ollie, and he was a sweetheart! He was the secretary of the Green Arrow fan club! He had a stamp collection! And even as a small child he was SO unhealthy, like my go to panel is this

Which is literally baby Roy willing to sacrifice his life to save Ollie, baby boy was going into that with FULL belief that he was going to die and he did it anyway and there's SO much I could say about that. I love Ollie, I've defended him in so many situations, but holy shit he raised a child to have issues. But little Speedy Roy was the sweetest thing!!! He wanted Ollie to pick him up ice cream!! He was just a little guy, a little fella!!

And then Snowbirds came along and obviously changed the way Roy was written, it was a major turning point for his character because it was really the comic that initially fleshed him out- before then yes obviously he did have his own distinct personality that differentiated him from the other Titans but at the same time that was VERY clearly a point in which he went from being a traditional child sidekick to being Roy. It gave him his own morals, his own struggles, and his own determination. Remember, Roy made the choice himself to get clean, he wasn't forced into it. Obviously Snowbirds has its problems, it was a PSA written in 1971, but also it was sosososososo foundational in developing who Roy is as a character.

There weren't too many comics featuring Roy between Snowbirds and Lian's birth, but they are also so interesting. I'm pretty sure it's Green Lantern (1960) #100 but also I'm rambling and I'm too drunk to fact check so I'll reblog tomorrow if I'm wrong but there's an issue where Roy goes back to Star City and you can SEE his desperation to be a hero, you can see his determination, and it's so beautifully written and in the epilogue Ollie tries to have a talk with him, tries to make amends after what happened and you'd EXPECT that Roy would take that, that it'd be water under the bridge, but Roy has his own agency and he fucking leaves!!! Because he's not ready to make up with Ollie and he has his own agency!!!

And then the second big turning point in Roy's career is when Lian is introduced, and you can SEE how much of an impact she has on him as a character! At the end of The Cheshire Contract Roy says he thinks Lian is gonna change him and he was right! She does! He goes to Ireland and meets Moira and Buttons (I think those are their names? Again, not fact checking this post) and looks after them and that's the start of his development as the "dad Titan", and he loves Lian so much!!

This panel from Rocks and Hard Places makes me SO emotional because he loves her!!! She's the most important person in his life!!! Plus his relationship with Jade is SO compelling to me, because he loves her and he'll always love her and she loves him too (even if a lot of writers have done their best to make that not the case- I love Jaderoy and I will always love Jaderoy)

And he's also generally such a good guy, I don't have the panel screenshotted and I can't remember the issue but there's that New Titans issue where Kory kills someone and she tries to justify it to Roy and he's just like "you don't need to explain it to me" and I wish his friendship was explored with her more because they had SO much potential as friends.

And then and he's SUCH a good mentor figure, like in New Titans #116 which is my go to issue for anything mentor Roy related because it's SO GOOD! He's constantly trying to wind the kids back to make sure they're okay, telling Terra II to not get too cocky, making sure Grant's okay (and the "yeah no wonder I'm in charge" panel when Grant suggests blowing Gar up is my favourite) and expressing genuine concern when Bart attacks Kyle recklessly and I WISH his relationship with Bart and Terra II had more susbstance because it's so good

Then there's the Arsenal Special which is really the comic which explains WHY he's called Arsenal!!! I've made so many posts about this comic and I love it so fucking much because he fucking takes all those guys out with only shit he can find then takes all their weapons and loads them onto himself while giving a badass monologue which, from memory, goes something like "he thinks I was was sent here to kill his daughters. Well guess what, I have a daughter too. So it all comes down to his daughters or mine. Who gets to think their daddy's a hero, or some thing that crawled out of the dirt. Get it through your head, 'cus it ain't gonna be mine". I love him. I love him so much.

Then there's Teen Titans (1996) #12-15 which I recently made a post about but it's a comic I'm SO greatful to have physical copies of because it's so fucking good for Roy stuff. There's so much on how others percieve him- I love the fab five, but they (well, the boys, Donna wasn't in it because she was mourning Robbie's death) have such a derogatory view of Roy. Like Dick's "he's good but not good enough" and Wally's view of him as not good enough to lead (which is brought up again in Titans 1999 secret files), and the constant references to Roy's addiction in that comic. Then he gets his Green Arrow inspired suit (very Red Arrow of you, late 90s) which he brings on to the Arsenal mini, and his whole fascination with the suit because his biggest dream is being good enough for Ollie, he IS way more than good enough for Ollie which was clear even from the end of Snowbirds but my boy has issues, and then Joto dies because of the explosive arrow he fires which IMO should have fucked him up more than it did but it also absolutely did fuck him up at least in that comic and in the Arsenal mini and there's probably more I could link that too but again, I'm drunk.

And then there's the Arsenal mini. Holy fuck I love the Arsenal Mini. it's so fucking good for like, all his familial relations in the Arrowfam in the late 90s. The flashbacks to Dinah and Roy during Snowbirds and Dinah's "the bravest person I ever met was the one who was flawed" speech, that panel of him resting his head on Dinah's shoulder, the fact that that entire story was fueled by his love of Lian, his talk with Connor about Ollie and how Roy never wanted to be Green Arrow he just wanted Ollie to have asked? It's so fucking beautiful and I love it. And the fact that he WAS gonna team with Vandal to save Lian, he's a father first and a hero second, but he thought about it and decided that there had to be a way to be both and he was right!!! He's so insanely good and I love him, he has a reputation of being a bad boy but he is SUCH a hero it's beautiful.

Then comes Titans '99 which I really can't do justice just talking about. He's so incredible in it it's insane. Like his father/son dynamic with Grant is so beautiful to read, he loves that boy!!! He loves that boy like he's his own flesh and blood and I will take no criticism!!! And his relationship with Donna is so painful to read in that comic because he's such a romantic and even though their relationship was gonna fail from the beginning because of the nature of it and because of Donna's reasons for it he still kept on it because he loved her!! He loves her so so much that he's willing to have his own heart broken for her and good god my boy is unwell. Plus it's the peak for Roygarth, their relationship in it is so great and their talk in issue 16 is amazing and I love it, plus Roy's genuine heartbreak at the possibility of Garth being dead just gets me. And while it's overshadowed by Outsiders, there is a lot of Dickroy potential in Titans 1999, Dick being so loving towards Lian with the "yumyumyumyum" panel in issue 1 and him generally just being one of the closest people in Roy's life, plus Roy being one of the only people who are willing to actually call Dick out on his BS and that being the thing that breaks that out of purgatory? Chefs kiss

And who would I be without mentioning Green Arrow 2001. I'm tired now so I'm not gonna talk about Archers Quest but I can't not talk about Boys Night Out because!!! He's so good in it!!! His speech to Connor that sounds SO much like a coming out acceptance speech, taking Connor to a bookshop despite his own boredom because he wants Connor to have a good time, the brotherly teasing while Connor's driving, him calling Connor out and supporting sex workers, him protecting Connor... it's the perfect issue. Anyone who hasn't, please read Green Arrow (2001) #32, it's so fucking good I promise.

And finally (and I mean finally as in I cba to talk about Red Arrow because I'm getting sleepy), Outsiders which is. So fucking good. Oh my god. Like him forming a team just to help support Dick through Donna's death, the fact that once again he's underestimated but this time Dick stands up for him, him getting shot and getting PTSD because of it (Oursiders 2003 #11 love of my life), everything that happens in this run is SO FUCKING GOOD AND I LOVE ROY HARPER!!! And for once he actually stands up for himself when he's called a junkie!!! He punches Dick in the face!!! As he fucking should king!!! And issue 45 (I think?) Is the best because it's. So good for him and Lian. His protectiveness over her, his love for her, and her being able to see when he's not okay. Beautiful outstanding and incredible.

In conclusion I LOVE Roy Harper because he's the best dad in the world, he loves everyone so much and will never stop, and he's just. Such a good person. I love him. I love him a lot.

Did you know July is Disability Pride Month? I know many of our crewmates are disabled and so I wanted to highlight this pride month in honor of them. "It's July & that means it's Disability Pride Month! But what actually is DPM?! I didn't know until a few years ago either so here's the run down!

Disability Pride Month was born out of the disability rights movement in July 1990 to commemorate the passing of the Americans with disabilities act (ADA). It has since become a global celebration, as well as an act of protest in order to campaign for the world to be more inclusive of disabled people. The first Disability Pride Parade in the UK was held in Brighton in 2016. Whilst we love our LGBTQIA+ friends & community members, #DisabilityPrideMonth has nothing to do with LGBTQIA+ Pride, they just happen to be next to each other.

The 3 main goals of Disability Pride Month are: ✨ To change the way people think about & define disability. ✨ To break down & end the internalised shame felt by people with disabilities. ✨ To promote the belief in society that disability is a natural, beautiful part of human diversity in which people living with disabilities can take pride.

All of these things are so incredibly important & change needs to be made in wider society in regards to ableism, accessibility & representation. Especially as being disabled is one of the only minority groups anyone can find themselves in overnight. Things are improving but I long for more disability representation in the media & in governance.

It's taken me a long time to discover my self worth as a person with a disability. And, don't get me wrong, being disabled is really tough But my disability has made me stronger, more resilient , more adaptable & has helped me find myself and the things that are important to me in a way I wouldn't have experienced otherwise. It's also helped me find the most incredible friends & community across the world.

I am disabled and I am proud." Happy Disability Pride Month Lovelies! I hope you have many many good days <3

Hey guys, Indie here, I don't usually make posts like this and I'm doing it from my mostly inactive reblog/sideblog because my main blog is really just for art but I have questions for people who create content for Horizon:

Has anyone been getting baity-asks in their inbox recently?

At the start of this year, every time I post ship-related art I get hate in my inbox. Is this a common occurrence for fellow writers and fanartists within this fandom?

I'd say I'm a pretty casual fan, I don't really share my opinions or participate in discourse on tumblr, I just post fanart and occasionally interact with some of you guys! Not sure what made me a target besides having a different ship preference than others lol. If that's all it takes to get hate, well, it's 2024 can we just.. idk.. get over it.

Just curious about the general state of this fandom these days. Not sure if there's anything that can be done except to ignore them. I don't know what compelled me to post this. I suppose I'm just looking for some solidarity in the community. It kind of sucks that the only messages I ever get are hateful! It doesn't bother me too much but I noticed it seems to only happen when I post something Horizon related. I'd hate if any newcomers get such a rude welcome to this space because I know there's still good and fun people within this fandom <3

This doesn't deter me at all from posting what I want, but I hope that in the future, the fandom returns to being a more vibrant and positive space :)

Been seeing a lot of increasingly hostile posts about this pop up again from both sides and honestly I think that "you should work on decoupling your drive to create from your desire for validation bcs audiences are fickle and algorithms are evil, so it's in your best interest to create for yourself first and foremost" and "if you want the creators you like to continue making stuff you should try to give them feedback and support in whatever way you can bcs the internet is fucked and while someone might bake just for the fun of it, if they spend six hours on a cake and take it to a potluck and no one touches it that's naturally going to be discouraging" are concepts that can and should coexist.

Like I don't think fans should feel SO pressured to engage in the Correct Way that they stop engaging all together(like if someone truly does not have the energy to comment on every fic they read I don't want them to stop reading fics in general, hearing about that makes me really sad, I want people to read my stuff even if they can't/don't want to comment), and I do think some people can go a bit too far when making "pls reblog stuff" PSAs, but I also don't think artists/writers are inherently being whiny and selfish for desiring support from the people who enjoy their stuff, especially bcs algorithms are stupid and evil and the internet kinda just sucks in general for creators so that fan feedback is really the only support a lot of us are ever going to get(and also there's also nothing wrong with pointing out general trends in fan engagement and culture and critiquing how some of them are concerning/harmful).

Is it good to create for yourself first and foremost? Yes. Is it normal to want feedback and support? Also yes. Are you obligated to reblog/comment on every single piece of art you find that you like? Not at all. Is it still a good idea to try to support people when you can? Absolutely.

Idk I just think there's nuance here that gets ignored. I'd love to hear what other people have to say tho, cuz I think this conversation needs to happen, so feel free to chime in.

I don't think that there's a single thing that I feel as strongly about, as my opinions of the following two lines: 'Every portrayal is equal' and 'There are multiple interpretations of a character'. I think that they both play into harvesting and perpetuating the worst mentalities on Tumblr: insecurity and egos. I disliked the PSAs about the former back in 2013, I hated the transition of the former to the latter in 2015/2016, and I hate how the latter still seems to resonate around the RPC as if it's some sort of bible that does anyone any good. And before any potential 'but Sae, those are two different things', no, not really, they play into the same concept, it's simply the phrasing that changes to make it all the more mentally inclusive and sound more socially welcoming. But a bad message remains a bad message no matter how pretty its packaging is. It all plays into not wanting to hurt people's feelings, which I fully understand and it's even a noble cause at its basis, but coddling doesn't help people, it never has, and it has and will only continue to make people more sensitive (which is a topic for a different salt send-in), all the while demotivating and utterly frustrating others. I'm sorry folks, but not every portrayal is equal, there are people who will create a blog merely because a character is hot, or for social political reasons of 'look at me', or because they simply ache to write a fandom's popular ship, and they disappear as quickly as they come when the 'urge' has been fulfilled. Those, for instance, are not equal to people who put a lot of time into their portrayals, and I'm not saying that everyone needs to live up to the latter, but don't be telling me that everyone is equal on the mere premise that they all 'exist' and we should 'all support one another'. Not every portrayal is equal, not everyone's writing is equal, and people's understanding of a character will not always be equal. And these things aren't subjective, they are factual. There can be such clear differences between portrayals and ignoring them is actually doing an injustice to every single depiction out there. If you tell a blog that does minimal writing and seems to not have a great understanding of the character (yet?), or the worst one: seems to really not care— that they’re equal to everyone else, then you’re telling them, for starters, that they could have nothing to improve on. And trust me, I’ve seen it happen time and time again, people will not put in effort to improve if you tell them that there’s nothing to actually better. And of course simultaneously, you demotivate the ones that have stuck around for years and put much time into what they do on Tumblr. And that sucks pretty hardcore.

Now luckily, that first line has somewhat died out, but now in its stead, we're left with 'There are multiple interpretations of a character'. I don't know whether it's worse, better, or just equally as bad of a take. I vote for... worse, actually. — No, no one will ever convince me that if they wrote an OC, and then released them to the world, that they'd be okay if RPers anywhere would claim that one can read their OC multiple different ways. I've seen RPers on Tumblr blow up over much less. What I need people to realize and remember, is that all creators and writers alike, have an intent with their characters, and that isn't subjective. Just like personality traits aren't subjective. For instance, one can't look at Veritas Ratio and go 'he's confident' and have someone else state 'he's insecure', and say that both are factually true and that both takes are equal in 'value' if we look at accuracy, because they're not. They cannot both be true, and I'm not talking about minor details that can be considered to be 'exceptions', I'm talking about the rule. What I need people to admit to, more often than not, is that it seems to have become a common take to conflate what they want a character to be like with what they actually are. I sometimes can look at a character and objectively go 'I wish they had done this instead, focusing on this and this, or this part of their personality'. but if I then choose to portray the character like that instead, it doesn't mean that it's what the character that we ultimately see on screen is actually like. And admitting that it's not the case isn't a bad thing, being canon divergent isn't a bad thing, but it is entirely different from intending to write the character based on what we actually see.

Fanfic-petpeeve: the "I claim EVERYBODY for the [neurodivergent fraction for your choice]." authors. If the author headcanons the characters to have autism, adhd, dyslexia, or any other thing its fine to me. But I do get annoyed when every. single character. has to have "the thing" AND hold PSA like monologues about "the thing" to every character. Like there was this one fic. It was a modern AU with a murder mystery going on. Character A just looks over the clues at the scene, there is blood and some clues to the murderer and stuff and suddenly they and Character B and C just HAVE to talk about stimming and how every one of them have a different stim and a different trigger and need different things for their sensitivity issues (including a character that in canon is a super daredevil that jumps out of planes, crashes cars and shots guns suddenly needs noise cancelling headphones because their ears are sensitive and they get overwhelmed from a few people talking... like I said it was an AU but still, it was a big "wtf" moment for me.) and it took me RIGHT out of the murder mystery vibes. It happened multiple times in the fic so I stopped reading it. I get that its a thing for some people to project on your favorite characters and have them have the same struggles and stuff but please. PLEASE. Don't turn your fic into educational PSA about "the thing". (especially if you WANT to tell an actual plot there and not just "let me tell you about my headcanons :D")

However, it's not "negative" to struggle; it's normal. Writers are people, and this isn't even our job. Fanfiction is just a hobby that we invest our time and energy in for free. As much as I want this to be a safe space for others, it is a safe space for me too. Let's not pretend everyone around us knows all our secrets, the blogs we have, the things we read and write. This is the only place I can come to talk about certain things and I don't wanna keep feeling bad about it. Not to mention I see so many of my mutuals and followers struggling too, and everyone chooses to stay quiet most of the time because it seems so shameful. Well, I don't wanna stay quiet, I'd rather have someone know they're not alone, and that it's okay and normal to struggle. I'm sorry. I love and appreciate you all, but if you're looking for a literal writing machine, I am not one. 🥹 You don't have to care about my problems - obviously, I'm sure you have plenty of your own and I'm sending you all my love. In all seriousness, SA is NOT a joke, and I suggest you do your own research on the case. This being said, as someone who is a victim of SA, this is not something to be taken lightly. It's all just so unfortunate, especially seeing as I looked up to him greatly as many people did.

It's okay if you are in shock, it's okay if you still enjoy his work (You can be a bad person and still write well), you can know that the author has done wrong and still enjoy fictional charaters. You can not know how to react and decide to leave a community. It's okay if you decide to wait for more information. It's okay if you take time off social media.

It's okay if you want this all to be fake. Its okay if you want this to be all some sort of fucked up political sham. You are allowed to be sad, you can feel guilty, you can feel pissed and you can feel betrayed.

That is all okay.

What's not okay is attacking those who aren't sure how to feel on the matter or those who are waiting for further information.

What's not okay is attacking those who will continue to enjoy his work (because contrary to popular belief, much like the music community you can watch/read without directly supporting the writer, such as libraries who probably already have his discs and books)

What's not okay is thinking "he would never do anything wrong" because no matter how famous someone is, they are capable of wrong.

What's not okay is shoving REAL VICTIMS under a rug and choosing to be blissfully ignorant because of a show you like. (While I haven't seen it, I have a feeling there's going to be people out there that will want this to go away for the sake of his shows alone)

And whats not okay is demanding his friends make a statement or immediately accusing them of sidding with an accused rapist. They do not owe us anything. For all we know, they had no clue. They are people, too. They deserve time to process and possibly grieve their friendship just like anyone else.

My personal take:

(not that it matters) is that, while it IS a little suspicious that this is being released right after the beef with the prime minister and David Tennant, as well as the same time as UK voting, and the fact that this wouldnt be the first time the goverment has used trans activitsts as pawns during election, This does NOT mean that i'm defending anyone!! I personally am right on the fence. If this had happened any other time then election time I would believe it right off the bat, but this is the part that's making me feel on the fence. There's an uneasy feeling in my stomach about the whole thing because in the US I've watched so many people be accused of all sorts of things during elections and 2 weeks later the same people who accused, admitted they lied for elections. So personally, I'm sitting this one out for now. Im waiting for more information. For now i'm sitting with ultimate betrayal and disgust at the thought of him doing something like this, because I've been in the spot where no one believed me. It's rough. Especially when you are young and the other person is much older. Even if this does turn out to be false, I still don't think ill be able to look at him the same way I did before.

General PSA disregarding the case:

In the US, there are politican ads on how a local senator "hates hospitals," which clearly isn't true. No one in their right mind would "want to defund hospitals".

This being pointed out, try not to immediately believe everything you see on the internet (especially around election times), and don't let them win. We know a lot of politicians' goals right now is to hurt thriving LGBT+ spaces.

Unfortunately, Neil has greated several of them with Good omens and Sandman, being in the top 100 influence writers list, our fandoms are huge and seeing how happy we all are makes the torys and many other transphobes MISERABLE.

If we are making them this upset by just drawing angel and demon pride art, that means we are extremely powerful as a fandom. It means we have a voice. Use this voice for good. Don't let these bigots tear us down just because they can't stomach the amount of happiness we have.

TL;DR: I stand with the victims, period.

If this is true, Fuck Neil, i feel guilty for ever looking up to him as a writer. If not, it's unfortunate (but not suprising) that they're targeting David's friends. Hi! Yes, I did receive your request, and in general, I prefer if people don't send me asks like this. FYI, you have been very polite here in this message, and I have no problems with what you have said, but I am not a fan of the practice of asking a writer 'did you get my request?' - because it feels as though you are rushing the fic. And I have stated many times that I don't prioritize or rush requests.

Because it is very, very rare that Tumblr 'eats' asks before they can get where they're going, so when I receive a request, it sits in my inbox unanswered until I can get to writing it.

Requests for me are casual (as they should be) - not a fanfic ordering system. I don't prioritize working on requests, I work on them at my leisure when I am bored or when I need to be inspired.

A request can sit in my inbox for months before being completed, but I will come to them at random times. And when I do work on a request, if I answer it with the fic on it (like I would with headcanons) or if I answer it just to say that I am working on it (like I would with a longer fic) - I don't answer a request until I have completed it. Because I don't like the trend of answering an ask request that I am interesting in working on, having it become a WIP, and then having people go 'oh, where is this fic? have you finished this fic? when are you gonna finish it?' - and it's not finished, it's just one of my casual WIPs.

(and don't get me started on people chasing down fics that don't exist yet and bugging me about those in comments and then when I direct them to similar fics I have already completed/written, they don't comment on those fics. that is a other annoying whole thing)

also, I am on a hiatus. I have been writing during that time, and I am going to come back from that hiatus with over 37,000 words worth of fanfic to post (and it should be 0. but the stress of moving got to me) - and when I finish the oneshot that I've been working on now (which does feature Newt - it's a threesome with Gally, Newt, and a fem reader character) - it will be closer to 50k. so I don't think that you'll really be missing out on anything if you like my work lmao

I haven't been prioritising requests, I was just looking to them because I was stressed and my brain wasn't coming up with ideas well even though I had the urge to write, and @star-mum helped me brainstorm and helped to solve that problem. (and I like to keep requests in my inbox for times when I feel uninspired - but I am never in a rush to complete them.)

so just a PSA to everyone in the future - please don't chase down requests with me. it is always my opinion that if you want your request completed in a rush, you should write it yourself or go to another writer who has less inspiration and more free time and will prioritize it more.

and I know some writers complain about people sending the same requests to multiple writers, but I'd rather you just not send your request to me in the first place (if you want the fic to be rushed), because I have stated multiple times that I don't rush requests, or - send me another message telling me that you would rather send your request to another writer/that you already did.

I always make it very clear what I am working on and when, and if I am working on a fic based on a request, I will state that it is requested, so you should know by the idea/outline that it's your request coming up - and then when it's finished, I will post the request and say 'hey, it's done! get excited!' - otherwise, like I said, people chase me down for unfinished fics and this has just worked better for me.

(and I'm probably gonna get so many messages saying I sound like a bitch for this. but I have been a tumblr writer for too long not to state my opinion on things like this lmao.)

I wasn't going to write a post about this, but at the same time I feel that I should, so feel free to ignore this post or read, either works for me.

It's been brought to my attention by several of you that a mun has been contacting you, telling you that I blocked them, and asking you to talk to me for them. First of all, thank you for those who were concerned and reached out, your kind words in my inbox have been much appreciated, and although I am not going to get into every last detail, I will clear some things up for those questions that were asked on anon.

I apologize that you are being approached and hope that it doesn't err on the side of harassment. I love and appreciate all of you who I write with and want nothing but the best.

Yes, I did block a certain mun, and I have blocked other muns in the past while running this blog. That's the cool thing about this blog being my own - I can do what I want on it without having to answer questions. This is my safe place to write, where I can come without a care in the world, and just write my nights away. I LOVE writing and have been excited to bring this blog back from the dead, and those of you who I have jumped into threads with, I am having the time of my life.

That being said, I am also a semi-selective writer. While I will give people a chance, sometimes I just don't see myself clicking with them, which is nothing against them, just styles might clash, or their ooc presence might be too overbearing. This is a place for me to have fun, not to feel forced to write, and in return, I hope to give you guys some amazing threads, smut, angst, or whatever you want from me. I don't feel confrontation is necessarily on tumblr, this is my place to write, and if I am not feeling something, it's best to just move on (from both perspectives).

For future reference, I will NOT take offense if you randomly drop our threads, block me, or do whatever if that is what you want to do. It's entirely your prerogative and I will not question anything. This is a safe place to write and draw up some crazy, angsty storylines, but I get that sometimes things just don't work out. Do what you need to, if you feel the need to, and please allow me that same luxury. I will also always try to be as vague as possible with other details such as race, hair color, eye color, etc., unless I happen to be writing an OC character with a specified appearance. But I imagine sometimes I'll make mistakes. The thing about Magic's Promise is that I think it's one of Lackey's best books for character development and worldbuilding but also always makes me want to beat Vanyel over the head with a stick. His whole character arc in this book is learning to stop moping over his dead boyfriend and that friends are important too... and therefore he has to keep his friends far away, for safety. Because the thing about Vanyel is that he's not selfish, exactly, all Heralds are so damn self-sacrificing (one starts to wonder if the Companions are exploiting them), but he's a bit self-centered. He just doesn't notice anything that doesn't affect him directly. Reading Magic back to back with Arrows is an interesting contrast, because Talia and Vanyel have very different backgrounds and it shows; farmgirl Talia thinks nothing of hanging out with the servants, while minor noble Vanyel barely even notices them.

Reading Magic back to back with Oaths is also a trip, because Oaths is all about Woman Power fighting against sexual abuse, and the only way a woman can be evil is if she is a man under a weird curse (it's the 80s). I don't think Lackey has ever had an actual female villain - Hulda in Arrows is more of an evil henchperson, not the mastermind - so it's a bit startling in Promise to see the effects of a boy abused by women treated with a good amount of sensitivity. I'm surprised she doesn't draw more direct connections between Tashir's abuse and Vanyel's "please stop assuming I am a child molester just because I'm gay" (which seems to be an obligatory psa for every gay fantasy hero of the 80s; ironically MZB has the same motif). The thing is, Lackey doesn't do a lot of subtlety, so when something like this happens I'm not even sure it was on purpose.

The theme of abuse also continues in the relationship between Vanyel and Jervis, one of my favorites in the whole of Valdemar, because it adds depth to what was previously a very basic bully relationship, but not in a way that implies one is obligated to forgive abusers; the way abuse is perpetuated in cycles is also a recurring theme, and I think a subtler writer might have managed to work that into the main plot instead of "so anyway there's this big magic rock..." But Lackey usually draws very hard lines between Good and Bad, and having a character doing Bad out of a desire to do Good and then later owning up to and fixing his mistake is a lot for her. And the fact that Vanyel had no idea that maybe Jervis had some other motivation that just picking on him also speaks to his self-centeredness.

Anyway, there are a lot of interesting notes of this book that never fully come together; Vanyel's arc of learning to enjoy friends despite lacking a romantic relationship is botched by his having about half a chapter with Shavri, which does not quite make for a convincing crisis of sexuality. Not to mention the fact that we know Bard Stefan is endgame, and I still think the reincarnation thing is total bullshit that runs counter to everything the first two books were building towards. And the themes of cyclical abuse could definitely have been tied into the Secret Ancient Family Magic of the main plot, if one had tried.

So it is what it is. It's very 80s. Maddening because it was almost but not quite the queer representation I was looking for at thirteen. At thirty I appreciate it as a queer stepping stone, and acknowledge it had other flaws as well.

Hm... I think I'll do Arrow's Fall next, then Oathbreakers, then Magic's Price. That'll round out the 80s and bring us into the 90s, with Kerowyn, Winds, and Gryphon.
