whenever i get annoyed with epic the musical stuff i have to remind myself that a) nine times out of ten it's actually the fandom that is annoying me (mostly by flooding the iliad and trojan war tags and discussions and my posts for an age now, despite my ever-expanding list of blacklisted terms), and b) it's essentially one composer/singer's glorified student project that got an IMMENSE amount of attention from tiktok teenagers (a dark destiny indeed)

as disappointing as i've thought some of the creative choices in the musical are, i feel pretty sorry for the creator. being solely responsible for a years-long serialized semi-adaptation of a world-famous story, where each installment is announced way ahead of time and the hype builds up to a superwholockian frenzy each time... it's a ticking bomb. the backlash was always going to come, because you're never going to satisfy each individual's expectations of what your story should be. i've been there myself in other fandoms, where the creative hivemind get each other excited going "omg imagine if--!!" and then we are inevitably disappointed when that specific thing (or something equally meaningful and thematically perfect) doesn't happen. like personally i think odysseus easily beating back poseidon with a jet pack and a sword is really really silly and doesn't fit into the musical's internal narrative, but that's the scene THAT guy wanted in the story, you know?
