I got obsessed with Valo, and now I want to share some information about him with you.

First of all, he's cuddly old man, he LOVES being touched and stroked, just like an old friendly cat. He's pretty chatty, and would like to have a nice conversation, believe me, he'd love to tell you stories and anecdotes. He really likes to make jokes about certain things or engines, but he never aims to offend anybody, just old man joking about silly younger men. He often jokes about Oulu, a young and ambitious express.

Valo also likes to listen to music, every evening his driver stays with him for a while, and turns on the radio, he especially likes Matti Jurva and Reino Helismaa. He had seen movies a couple of times and he's a big fan of Eemeli (Finnish comedian and actor). In addition to Finnish, he knows Swedish and English, but prefers to speak his native language most of the time. He can read, but with his size, books are problematic for him to read, except with glasses, but even then with difficulty. He's wise and experienced, and is often put in charge of less experienced locomotives.

However, despite his loving and caring nature, he sometimes gets gloomy if something really bothers him. He's also very desperate and stubborn, when it comes to work.

Headcanon: Iseu is on good terms with two Dreian shopkeepers on SR-6 named Thetel and Praiya. They don't approve of what Iseu does for a "living" and have tried talking him out of it many times, but his good humor makes him a welcome visitor all the same. (In Iseu's opinion, they make the closest thing to authentic vikresh you can find away from Dreia, and he rarely misses their semi-weekly batches of jurva.)

JUHA JARVINEN, an unemployed young father in a village near Jurva, in western Finland, brims with ideas for earning a living. He has just agreed to paint the roofs of two neighbours’ houses. His old business, making decorative window frames, went bust a few years ago. Having paid off debts, he recently registered another, to produce videos for clients. Mr Jarvinen says that for six years he hoped to start a new business but it was impossible. The family got by on his wife’s wages as a nurse, plus unemployment and child benefits. He had a few job offers from local businesses, which are mainly in forestry, furniture and metalwork. But anything less than a permanent, well-paid post made no sense, since it would jeopardise his welfare payments. To re-enroll for benefits later would be painfully slow. Mr Jarvinen’s luck turned in January, when he was picked at random from Finland’s unemployed (10% of the workforce) to take part in a two-year pilot study to see how getting a basic income, rather than jobless benefits, might affect incentives in the labour market. He gets €560 ($624) a month unconditionally, so he can add to his earnings without losing any of it. If Mr Jarvinen is making progress, it is too soon to draw overall conclusions. Kela, Finland’s national welfare body, which runs the pilot, will not contact participants directly before 2019, lest that influences outcomes. Instead it monitors remotely, using national registers of family incomes, taxes paid and more. (Anonymised data will be made available to researchers.)

Headcanon: Another Dreian food staple is jurva, pickled fish and vegetables ranging in flavor from plain salty to extra hot. It doesn’t smell very pleasant to many outsiders, but most if not all Dreians swear it’s an excellent snack or side dish.
