The Genius 1x01

The Genius: Rules of the Game Episode 1 Main Match: 1, 2, 3 Game Deathmatch: Winning Streak

1, 2, 3 Game

Sunggyu: I have to say, I really think he played everyone here. Yes, he was a bit slow off the mark at the beginning, but I truly believe that his naïvété only lasted a few minutes, and once he understood the game, he started feigning ignorance, in order that he could gain pity from other players, and collect everyone’s tactics and playstyles to use against them, either in this round or another. However:

Kyungran: Apparently she’s scary, but I really don’t see that. She’s sharp, and crafty, and she is a very political player, playing other contestants against each other. But she also falls for Sunggyu’s naïvété, along with everyone else. That said, despite not being the winner, she’s the true MVP of the round, masterminding the Main Match’s central conflicts.

Jinho: A shaky start for The Genius’s icon, almost like a “tutorial” level before he dominates the rest of the games. In fact, a lot of his play style really reflects his professional gaming background: he hones his skills over the weeks, iteratively, while others come up with completely new tactics. Definitely the least political of players, too, throughout the show.

Gura, Poong, Minsoo: None of these guys do anything for me, at all. Minsoo is at least affable, but Gura just dominates the conversations through force, and always grates on me. Poong is just a willing slave to anyone.

Minseo: It’s luck of the draw, that Minseo of all people was the one to lose. Realistically, anyone could have betrayed, and no-one could really have guessed who, at the beginning.

Everyone else: Not much to say. While the details were not always identical (4/4+1 vs. 3/3+3 play-styles, or even 4/4/1 and 3/3/3 W/L/D), everyone just really stuck to their alliances, and came in the middle half of the group. Nothing to comment on, and the main weakness of this game, in that it has a “sit it out” option.

Deathmatch

The strategy: Honestly, I think this is the right way to play the first Deathmatch, and that Jinho ended up in the last spot is a stroke of luck.

Junseok: I never really liked him, and I don’t know why. Honestly, that he left was fine.

Minseo: Not the best player, but she managed to pull off her part in the scheme flawlessly.

Jinho: Really was played like a fiddle, and it’s hard to reconcile this early Jinho with the later play we see throughout the series.

Sangmin: HOOO BOOOYYY... This is the first sign of the Sangmin we see in Season 2. He’s always political and plays people aggressively, but we don’t really see another batshit insane scheme like this until Season 2 and later Season 4. The Garnet Heist is truly balls-to-the-wall, as schemes go.

Summary

A slow game that really does help to introduce some of the more enduring characters from the season. That said, the fact that the game has an “opt out” strategy is to its discredit, even if it does give a much clearer narrative.
