The Lore of Halloween Terrors

Now you might be thinking "but Issy, Halloween Terrors doesn't have that much lore, what is there to talk about?"

And oh my sweet, naieve friend, let me take you on a journy of the lore of the characters featured in the Halloween Terrors event!

First of the canon characters, these are the characters actuvely featured in the lore of this event. Characters that include;

Now all of these characters have lore that is implied mostly through interactions but some are implied through the names in game and their canon skins associated with the character in the Halloween Terror's universe. Some more then others but there is lore non-the-less.

Throughout the month I will be exploring the lore and implications of each characters, starting with the playable heroes and going down the list all the way to the NPC characters.

During this time I will try only answering asks that are centred around the Halloween event.

do you think next year we'll have new playable character for Bride's Wrath game mode like we had with Junkerstein's Revenge?

I mean it would be a total rip-off if we didn't. Being locked in to four characters (2 of which are kind of assholes and the third you could not pay me to give a shit about and the fourth being cool but completely off-Junkenstein theme) really put a damper on the experience even if the expanded map made it a lot more cinematic.

I've been going through some stuff but I'm finally writing another origin story. I'm hoping to finish it soon.

But, October is coming up and I've been thinking about writing for the characters in the Junkenstein story. Just for fun! Maybe I'll start with a combination of Junkenstein's Revenge and the Wrath of the Bride and maybe some other stories with different groups of the cast afterwards. I think it'll be something fun to do for Halloween.

Overwatch 2’s Only Halloween Event Skin Comes From Not Playing

We are now in the midst of the Overwatch 2 Halloween event, which honours the spookiest season of the year with a spooky overlay and even a new game mode—a follow-up to Junkenstein's Revenge. Though the FPS game has gone free-to-play, this year's Overwatch 2 Halloween event is different, and many players aren't at all happy with the new rollout of earnable skins and cosmetics. In case you didn’t know, the Overwatch 2 Halloween event is running from October 25 to November 9, and it adds the co-op mission Junkenstein’s Revenge: Wrath of the Bride. You can earn name cards, weapon charms, battle pass XP, and more, but players are frustrated at Blizzard for removing one specific earnable reward: character skins. That said, you can watch any streamer under the Overwatch 2 Twitch category for four hours and get the Werewolf Winston Legendary skin, but there are still no earnable in-game rewards pertaining to skins during the event. It appears that this change has everything to do with the Overwatch 2 free-to-play model, as Blizzard also mentions that limited edition skin bundles will be available in the shop during the event. “We’re expanding on the story of Junkenstein’s Revenge through Wrath of the Bride and adding spooky new skins and bundles to the Overwatch Shop.” This change has caused quite the furore from players, as a post outlining that there are no skin rewards in the Overwatch 2 Halloween event has gained almost 24,000 upvotes on Reddit in less than a day. “Event skins were the only thing keeping me playing over the last couple years,” laments SnooDoodles8088. “I never missed a single one and it almost felt like an obligation to maintain my streak after a while.” This change to event skins is emblematic of a larger Overwatch 2 problem for most players, this being that skins feel too expensive, and that Blizzard has completely changed how players can earn them, which is basically no longer through play itself. “You get more skins for not playing the game,” adds The_Owl_Bard, which feels like an incredibly apt statement that highlights the overall state of the Overwatch 2 Halloween event, and the multiplayer game’s monetisation model. At this point I think it’s fair to say that Blizzard won’t be changing its money making ways for Overwatch 2, as it aligns with the new free-to-play model that’s been adopted. General Lore of Halloween Terrors

Now before I get into the characters of Halloween Terrors let's start off with the general lore around the world of Halloween Terrors.

First off, what is the story?

Well the world of Halloween Terrors was initially a story told by Reinhardt during a Halloween party, in an effort to show up Cassidy's werewolf story;

(Side note: I love this comic)

However, considering how the story has progressed, I don't think that is just the case anymore. I think at this point the Halloween Terrors Universe is on the same playing field as Starwatch, that meaning I believe it is it's own separate universe.

Now what is the general backstory of this universe? Well let's start off with a few foot notes.

Before the events of Junkenstein there was a war, a war that The Gunslinger and The Solider talk about in voice lines, no other character mentions this war so it can be assumed that this war only happened in America.

The world and countries of this world are exactly the same as our own, at least existence wise. There are no renaming's of any countries.

There is no question in this universe on whether or not magic is real, magic is defiantly real. However, alchemy and divine channelling are not considered magic. Alchemy is considered science and divine channelling is considered a separate thing from magic.

It's not just Halloween monsters that are real in this universe but fantasy creatures as well, such as dragons.

Now with that out of the way let's get into the surface level story of Halloween Terrors.

The first event is Junkensteins Revenge, after being scorned and insulted by the king Dr. Junkenstein tries to prove him and everyone wrong by creating life. With body parts he acquired from The Butcher, he created his monster. However bringing it to life was proving to fail time and time again.

Until The Witch of the Wilds saw potential in him and gave him a magic crystal in exchange for his service to her;

After that Junkenstein's Monster was given life;

However as a reaction to this rampage Four Heroes appeared, The Gunslinger, The Archer, The Alchemist and The Solider. Together they banded together and put a stop the Junkenstein, his monster, The Witch and her minion The Reaper.

There was peace for a time...

But the Witch was not done, she herself wanted revenge and so she plunged Adlersbrunn into an eternal night;

Now initially four more heroes were called to aid, The Countess, The Viking, The Monk and The Swordsman. However, they were not enough as several other heroes ended up joining the fray. The Will-o'-the-wisp, The Outlaw, The Shield-maiden, The Renegade, along with the return of The Gunslinger and The Solider.

Eventually The Witch and her minions were defeated again and peace was restored.

Until Wrath of the Bride.

The Bride attacks Adlersbrunn and kidnaps the king, the only people to stop her? The Sleuth, The Outlaw, The Fortune-Teller and The Butcher.

Now I can't actually explain much about the story of The Bride without getting into theory territory and that's for another post.

After defeating The Brides allies and eventually The Bride herself, Adlersbrunn is once again at peace.

....But for how long?

OWL 2022 Grand Finals and New Halloween Event!

Alright, this is a bit of a more classic post of mine. Here is the run down from the Overwatch League twitter about what you need to know about the finals before October 30th! This is the twitter link if you want to check it out.

Also, the new Halloween event is up and running! Junkenstein's Revenge: Wrath of the Bride is pretty good, but it's definilty a little harder than the old Junkenstein's Revenge which is still available in the arcade. The only issue I have is how expensive the Kiriko items for Halloween are. As much as I have been enjoying OW2, I really dislike the shop. The Battlepass is fine, but the shop is really overpriced and as a player who likes to collect as many items as I can, it's disappointing.

Seems to be a new Halloween event "Wrath of the Bride" starring Sojourn, Kiriko, Junkerqueen, and Ashe as the protagonists based on the trailer.

I'm still wary. Last year they launched all the skin reveals as "Junkenstein's Revenge IV: The Zomnic Huntress" and had the promo like "Deep in the castle... Evil Stirs" implying, perhaps, there was finally an expansion to Junkenstein's Revenge where you go in the castle--but no, it was just a promo for the new skins (And I think the addition of Ashe and Baptiste to Junkenstein's revenge? Though that may have been earlier). I mean, I'm only thinking they might actually have a new Halloween Game Mode with a different map (...probably just the interior of the castle in Eichenwalde) because it would be absolutely deranged to launch Overwatch 2 without a significant update to seasonal game modes.

That being said... you see people slapping together all sorts of crazy shit in the Overwatch Workshop mode all the time, it's frankly ridiculous that it took the Overwatch team this long to update Junkenstein's Revenge. I've honestly wondered why they never created a Nazi Zombies mode (you know, endless onslaught with randomized power-ups/bonuses) for Château Guillard or Black Forest because those maps seem perfect for that kind of game mode and even more perfect for Halloween, and they could pump some new life and interest into the Deathmatch maps.
