Junithena Week 2023 Day 1: Azalea

I honestly had no idea what to do for Day 4, so have some original Lego Junithena designs for Day 4: Free Day!

Day 5 for Junithena week 2023: Sweet pea (goodbye/departure)

Short fic :) post-DD but before SoJ?

Juniper takes the plunge.

“Thena, I like you.”

Athena stares at her as if she’s looking at a budding flower, waiting for more time to come so she can grow up.

Juniper waits. She watches Athena open her mouth, but then closes it and looks away. Probably because she’s out of energy to maintain eye contact. Juniper redirects her sight towards the side and finally supplies more, “Did you know?”

“…No.”

The delivery sounds like the truth. “Really?”

But you can hear voices from the heart.

Did I hide it that well?

“I didn’t notice. Or I kinda did, but thought it was for someone else.” Athena plays with the moon rock that her mother has gifted her. “I’m sorry, Junie.”

Juniper’s throat is dry. She’s about to deliver a rehearsed line that it’s fine. It's fine — she did have feelings for another person, a very fine person, so Athena wasn’t wrong. And she can move on; she's proven that finely — but she can feel her eyes and heart burn so she doesn’t.

“…that I didn’t notice,” Athena continues to say. Juniper nods and tries to multitask in listening to her friend and in holding back from a meltdown. She only achieves the latter.

Arms wrap around her and Juniper wonders if she did actually achieve it. Because she’s not sure if she’s being hugged because she's not fine or—

“We can go on a date and see?”

A … date?

Juniper swallows and steps back. She deeply breathes into her sunflower before she echos her thoughts aloud.

“Yup," Athena confirms. "For me to get to know you. And for you to get to know me.”

“I don’t understand. We do know each other.”

“I feel like I don’t since I didn’t notice your feelings.”

“Oh.”

Maybe it's time to say goodbye to their twelve year old selves. A lot has definitely changed and maybe this Athena will stay; she doesn’t need guardians who live in faraway places that Juniper was only able to send handwritten letters to and receive from. She still has those letters in a box somewhere at home. But current words are good too. “A date sounds nice.”

"Bueno! I'll plan one."

There’s many more dates after. And they’re officially girlfriends without the space in-between.

They’re home, or at least it's Juniper’s grandmother's home and they plan to move in together in six months, but for now they hold hands whilst they watch the sun rise over the mountains. Juniper leans against Athena and they pull up their blankets to cover themselves with warmth. Athena kisses Juniper on the mouth and Juniper can feel her morning smile.

What’s a goodbye without a hello.
