Academic Misgivings (Part One) - Peter Parker
Here it is! Part One! Remember this is a Rivals-To-Lovers, slow burn story with a Fem!reader. This also takes place after Homecoming and before Endgame. FEEDBACK IS APPRECIATED!
You and Peter Parker aren’t friends, but you’re not entirely enemy either. You don’t like him but he always tries to be nice to you. He has everything you’ve ever wanted and you’ll do anything to show him that you can make it on your own. But can you?
Blood was pounding in your ears, heart thundering in your chest as if spurred to life by some angered beast. The sensation of tingling nerves as your hand seemingly hovered, magnetically drawn, over the buzzer. Adrenaline drove you through the thrill as Mr. Harrington’s monotone voice echoed in your skull. The question floated in your mind, seeking its own answers locked away between the neurons of your brain.
With a snap of synapse your whole being jolted. Your palm slammed on the buzzer so hard that the light within shuddered a violent red. Mr. Harrington’s brown eyes widened in shock at the sound but her quickly composed himself.
“Midtown?”
“What is the Fibonacci Spiral.”
“Correct!” Mr. Harrington rang a little bell and turned his back to you. Finally, you allowed yourself to breathe, although it felt more like a wild gasp of air.
“Figures,” you heard someone grumble behind you, but you were too caught up in rolling off the high of affirmation. The mounting joy was building like the apprehension of riders on a roller coasters first crest of a large hill.
“Great job, Y/N. You’ll be heading the B team in Chicago.” And there was the stomach sinking drop. No cheers filled your ears, only disappointed thoughts barraged your mind.
“The B team? Doesn’t my improvement push me up to the A team?” The rest of the academic decathlon team fell silent at your question. You didn’t have to turn around to know that all eyes were on you. Almost all eyes.
“Well we already have Mr. Parker leading A team. We need to keep our heaviest hitters spread out through the sets of questions.” Your hands curled into tight fists. It would take you and ‘Mr. Parker’ to even out the intellect on B team. You opened your mouth to say exactly that when the school library doors flew wide. A red faced, panting, Peter Parker had decided to show up. Now, all eyes were on you as you loomed over the table.
“So, so sorry, this won’t happen again, I promise,” Peter said, his bright eyes shifting from you to Mr. Harrington. The man peered at him through his thick rimmed glasses with an almost fatherly expression. Peter, like a scolded child, dropped his backpack next to the others and found an empty seat on the other table, opposite you.
“It better not,” despite the veiled threat, Mr. Harrington’s voice was soft. “We need you in Chicago Peter. You’re our secret weapon.” If it weren’t for Peter’s awkward laugh, everyone could have heard your eyes rolling in their sockets. Ever since you were both young, Peter Parker had never failed to show you up. If he wasn’t deemed superior under the circumstances, then you were put on an equal footing that always set you more on edge than his overwhelming victories.
For instance, there was the first grade summer reading program. The program itself was not, in name a contest; but as soon as the plump librarian dotted on the fact that you and Peter were ‘neck and neck’ with the amount of books you had both read, you drove yourself to collect on a phantom prize. At the end-of-summer reading palooza party hosted by the public library, the final count was drawn in a tie. You and Peter had read a grand total of 42 books a piece, a hefty sum for a couple of seven year olds.
Then there was the infamous war forged on the third grade front of Mrs. Davis’ classroom. The lovely lady taught science, arguably your favorite subject and Peter’s realm of fascination. Mrs. Davis had both you and Peter in her fifth hour class and would often call on either of you to run errands for her before lunch period. The battle to be her teacher’s pet was intense between you and Peter. It was only in fourth grade did you both learn that being a teacher’s pet was the worst thing anyone could be, ever. Nevertheless, the seeds of animosity had sprouted that year and sixth grade only serves to nourish the growth.
The second year of middle school had not only stirred up the beginnings of puberty but also supplied an outlet for your budding hostility towards your academic rival. You weren’t one for physical education, much preferring a good book than a good jog, but dodge-ball was a godsend. Peter was as lanky as a stick bug, making him a smaller target but that also meant he couldn’t throw very far either. The dodge-ball intramural championship gave you your very first win against district-wide admiration of Peter Parker.
Despite how tall and suddenly handsome Peter had gotten over Summer break, your jealousy towards him remained. The flames were only stoked when girls would, happily, go up to talk to him, compliment him. Burning with envy, for which party, that you were unsure of, you finally talked to Peter. All years past, your competition to outdo each other had been silent. Not a word had passed between you before seventh grade and it only served to anger you further.
Peter was kind. So kind that he made you feel like your bitter rivalry had been one sided. Further fueled, you competed against him in a school hosted trivia night. However, the fates seemed to be against your thirst for conquest because you and Peter ended up on the same team. Granted, that team had won, but between you and Peter, no winner was named.
This fervent yet unspoken clash continued to grow as you both entered high-school. Freshman year had consisted of fighting to see which one of you would join the academic decathlon team first. Peter had made the A team and you the B team. The results presented a persistent conflict between you and the boy genius that had followed up to the current Junior year. Was it childish? Perhaps. Were you ever going to admit that? No.
The sound of a loud practice buzzer went off, breaking you out of your reflection. When you looked up at the table opposite, your jaw clenched. Of course it had been Peter to answer the question. His friend, Ned, clapped him on the shoulders and you felt your own tense up.
“Correct, as always, Mr. Parker.” Mr. Harrington changed the score on the board and you felt your skin crawl. Peter was always the star pupil, no matter how well you performed in his absence. “Alright next question. Hypertrichosis is colloquially known by this name…”
The meat of your palm stung when it impacted with the buzzer. “What is Werewolf Syndrome.”
“Correct!”
You smiled smugly, reclining back in the uncomfortable chairs that, on some vile whim, the school board had deemed perfect for the campus library. Ready to gauge Peter’s disappointment in himself, you spared a glance his way. You found his brown eyes on you, lips offered you half of a smile. You wanted to gag. The role of team player had never suited you, but Peter worn it well like the clothes on his back.
“Well, that ties up our practice scores!” Your head seemed to spin out of your control as you snapped your gaze to the white, erase marker board Mr. Harrington was holding up. Just once, that was all you wanted, to win. “That gives me the opportunity to talk about the trip to Chicago.”
A chorus of limited cheers and apprehensive stares flooded the room. MJ finally looked up from her book at the news of the field trip. Some of the team was still reeling from their last one. Washington had been a great victory if you ignored how they almost died afterwards.
“It’s gonna be fun guys!” A cheerful cry from Betty, a lovely blonde sophomore. She hadn’t been on the trip to Washington. Flash, how was sitting beside you, let out a snicker at the younger girl’s optimism.
“That’s right, thank you, Betty,” Mr. Harrington continued, “sadly, due to budget cuts, we will be taking a smaller bus this time. Pack lightly and tell your parents that you will be safe. Everyone signed the waivers, yes?” Most of the team spoke up in response. “Great. Now remember, meet at the front doors at five fifty-five. We’ll be leaving the school at six.”
“So much for the healthy, professionally recommended eight hours of sleep,” MJ remarked, bringing a smile to your lips. You had never had a long conversation with her, but from what experiences you did have with MJ, you took her to be the wittiest person you had ever met. Much to your amusement, that same wit had a tiring effect on Mr. Harrington who, after MJ’s critique, promptly dismissed the team.
You stood swiftly and began to gather your things. The team had a bad habit of stacking bags on top of one another, so it took a moment for you to find you backpack. Once you dug it out of the stack of bags, you spun on your heel and nearly fell face-first into Peter.
“Oh, s-”
“Watch it, Parker,” you snap before the blush on your cheeks became too visible. he warmth from his body had dulled the flames of embarrassment for a moment before you had realized how close you were to him. You didn’t give Peter a chance to reply as you pushed past him. Luckily, it seemed that no one had noticed the dusting of pink along your face.
The white-hot soreness was put to rest by the crisp afternoon breeze of New York. While Midtown School of Science and Technology wasn’t in the heart of the city, it was close enough to the bay where, every now and then, a gentle breeze would carry off from the water. Such a gust was especially felt after school when the sun was no longer at its peak. The receding sunshine made for a cool walk home.
You adjusted the straps of your bag more securely over your shoulders, hoping to keep your mind off of the moment before. Any interaction with Peter had the innate gift of setting you on edge. You clenched your jaw as you walked, the grinding of your teeth drowning out the pestering thoughts of him. However the one sound that wasn’t overshadowed was the quick pattering of feet on the length of sidewalk behind you.
“Y/N! Wait up!’ You turned your head for a brief moment and, after recognizing the figure chasing after you, you picked up your pace. “Y/N!”
“Not now, Flash, I have stuff to do!” You felt a hand grab your wrist and you stopped in place. Glaring at your peer, you yanked your hand away.
“It will only take a moment.” Teeth gritted, you stared at him.
“It better be worth it.”
Flash gave you a startlingly smug grin as you followed him into a nearby coffee shop. He ordered some absurdly complicated mocha-cappuccino concoction before you both found a secluded table. If it weren’t for the circumstances, you would have enjoyed the shop. It was painted a calming sea-blue and littered with antiques of all sorts. The interior gave off a relaxed aura that was brutally interrupted when Flash sat in front of you as he stirred an alarming amount of sugar in his already frothy drink.
“Alright, I have a proposition for you,” Flash said, placing his coffee stirrer on a napkin.
“A proposition? What are you, a mob boss?”
“Nah,” Flash said coolly as he waved his hand in dismissal, “just a boss in general.” You had to keep yourself from gagging as he continued. “It’s clear to me, everyone really, that you’re not Peter Parker’s biggest fan.”
You let out an amused huff. “Really? You’ve noticed?”
“Neither am I,” Flash said, having ignored your remark. “Which is why I extend an olive branch to you.”
“What does this olive branch entail?” You leaned forward with a quirked brow, eyeing Flash. He had your attention.
“You want to be on A team, as do I. No one can move up with Peter sitting there with his other nerd friends. With the right manner of,” Flash leaned close to whisper, “sabotage, we can both get what we want.”
“Sabotage?” You leaned back in your seat, eyes skirted the features of the weasel before you. What Flash was selling was enticing, but the idea of stooping to his level was wholly unappealing. Or perhaps it was the prospect of playing dirty that appalled you, the risk of actually hurting Peter maybe. You shook your head. “Not interested.”
“Hold on, hold on, you haven’t heard my plan yet,” Flashed raised his hands to calm you, keep you listening. “One of us would befrien-”
“Really, not interested Flash,” you interrupted as you stood up from your seat. “I don’t need to ‘sabotage’ him, I’m better than him.”
“Judging by your stable and steady position on the B team, it seems like you might not be.” Rage, pure, unadulterated rage flooded your body and turned your sight red. You turned to glare at Flash before you stomped out of the coffee shop.
You didn’t need him, you thought as the cool air hit your face once more, don’t need anyone. For you entire life, you had been going it alone so what was something more? You would show Flash and, hopefully, Peter. That leading spot on the A team was going to be yours.
“Y/N, hold on! I’m sorry, but please, listen!” You kept walking and, when he realized he was being ignored, Flash hurried to your side. “If you don’t to sabotage him, can we at least train together? If we’re like really good maybe the city can organize for us to meet Spiderman or even Iron Man! He gave that internship to Parker of all people so maybe-”
“What is it with you and Spiderman?” You countered, hoping to get off the road of this conversation with a well-worn detour.
“I dunno, he’s just….he’s like really cool! Did I ever tell you about the time at Homecoming he took my car?! It was-”
“You told everyone about that,” you grumbled, clearly annoyed. “Why don’t you find someone that doesn’t know that story, yeah?”
You took advantage of his silence and darted quickly down the block. Flash’s strength of talking when no one wanted him to was also his greatest weakness. One that could be easily exploited if you were in need of a getaway. Home was just a few more blocks down.
As you rounded a corner, you nearly ran into a couple walking by. The man’s arm was lazily slung over the woman’s shoulder, who smiled so brightly it was almost like she had been paid to do it. The couple exchanged giggles as you passed by and your heart sank. It had been normal for you to be so painfully focused on the academic side of your life that you had neglected almost every other facet of it. That included romance.
Peter and his ridiculously large brain and his shy little smile took up far too much of your time for you to have even entertained a relationship. Books and trivia apps were your closest friends. Your family was a different story altogether. From the moment Peter Parker walked into your life, everything had changed. You imagined his life had changed too.
As you walked, a shadow fluttered over the length of sidewalk before you. Ever so curious, you looked up to see a man swinging from building to building; Spiderman, specifically. He was hard to miss with the bright red suit and flailing limbs, spindly like his name sake. The powered man looked just as you remembered him from the first time you had seen him. Up close, he had looked more like a boy than man as he safely loaded you and the rest of the team in the elevator inside the Washington Monument on solid ground.
It all felt like a distant memory as the apartment complex you called home came into sight. Everything that last year had felt clean and safe, perfectly juxtaposed to life now. Spiraled out of control, you had once said to your mother. She hadn’t responded and you knew that she wouldn’t. You climbed the steps, as the elevator was out of order, all the way to the eighth story.
By the time you had unlocked the door, your feet ached for respite. As you kicked off your shoes, the sound of them as they hit the floor echoed in through the apartment. There was no carry-over bustle from the streets. The exposed brick bore no life in the form of family portraits. No one was home except for you and your thoughts; as usual.
You woke the next morning at five. Luckily, before you had fallen asleep, you had enough foresight to pack for the Chicago trip. Textbooks to read during the drive, clothes for the three day stay, and your favorite green sweatshirt already thrown over your loose t-shirt. From the last trip, you had learned to wear comfy clothes for long bus drives. The twelve hours from the school to Chicago was the perfect excuse to dress lazily.
From the near-empty fridge, you grabbed snacks and bottled water for the road. Already, the idea of competing with the highest ranked schools in The Windy City made your stomach churn. With the twisting nerves, you decided to skip breakfast. A poor choice, you soon realized as you lugged your bag down the seemingly endless flights of stairs.
By the time five fifty-five rolled around, you were sweaty from the trek from your home to the school. Mr. Harrington looked exhausted but the ever spry young Literature teacher, Ms. Lauren, chattered away to the team as they boarded the small bus.
“Ok kids, I know you’re tired, but put your bags in the back of the bus so we can easily unpack it when we get to the hotel.” You wondered if Ms. Lauren happened to be a morning person or if the large, travel mug of coffee held tight in her hands had anything to do with her wide smile.
Once your bag was stacked with the rest, you settled in a seat towards the front. MJ’s mass of curls popped up in a seat nearby, her sneaker-clad feet hung out in the aisle. Ned and Betty, the blonde sophomore, idly chatted, talking about the last time they had been up so early. Late, as usual, Peter Parker made his way on the bus.
“You’re lucky this wasn’t practice, peebag,” Flash sneered when Peter walked past him. The skinny boy dragged a suitcase behind him, one of the front pockets unzipped showed a type of red workout shirt. Or at least you assumed as much, judging by the look of the material.
“Hi Peter,” Ned greeted loudly, making you crane your neck to glare in their direction. It was much too early for pleasantries.
“Hey, Ned,” Peter said quietly as he added his bag to the pile. He gave Betty a nod of greeting before working his way back to the front of the bus. He stopped beside MJ’s seat, just in front of you. “Can I?”
MJ only glared in response, her legs remained sprawled lengthwise along the seat. Peter sighed and turned to look for any other empty seat. As he did, the rather crabby looking bus driver had slammed the bus door shut. The small bus jolted and Peter gripped the edge of your seat tightly, as he kept from falling.
“Is this seat taken?” Peter asked you, his tried looking brown eyes met your gaze in earnest. You stared back at him, mouth parted as your mind tried to register what was happening. It seemed that Fate was against you once more.
“Sit down kid!” The gravelly voiced of the bus driver reached your ears and pulled you back to the present. Locked eyes tore away from Peter’s as you moved. You scooted down the bus seat until your side was pressed up against the window. Peter said a soft ‘thank you’ but you were much too peeved to reply. You hoped that if you pressed your cheek against the cool surface of the window that the blush that had burned into your skin would fade. No such luck.
However, what it did cool, was your heated thoughts. A dull ache that had plagued you since you had wakened vanished. Finally at some sort of ease, you allowed yourself to close your already hooded eyes. You felt warmth as you drifted off to sleep, a safety you hadn’t had in a long time.
Whether it was the jolt or the sunlight filtering through the slightly grimy bus window that woke you, you were unsure. All you knew was that you were comfortable. Slowly, your eyes opened as you cringed against the rising sun. It couldn’t have been more than a few hours since you had left, but tiredness still seeped into your bones.
It was when the sounds of snickering filled yours ears that you awoke fully. The telltale sound of a phone’s digital camera shutters clicked off and you were thrown into a frenzy of embarrassment as you realized why you were so comfortable in the first place. As if his body had burned you, you pulled your head away from Peter’s shoulder. You narrowly avoided knocking skulls thanks to an alarming quick reaction on Peter’s part.
“What?!” Your shout caused the growing crowd around you and Peter to scurry off.
“Ar-Are you okay?” Peter’s soft brown eyes met yours and held the utmost, disgusting amount of concern.
“Yeah, I’m fine. The bus jus-just jolted,” you grumbled in reply. Peter nodded but you knew that he knew it was a lie. You had never been quite good at lying.
“Oh, o-okay,” Peter murmured before he fumbled with his phone. You rested the side of your face against the window once more and watched other cars race by. Silently you hoped that the movement would keep you awake. Out of the corner of your eye, you observed Peter as he attempted to untangle his earbuds. He gave up halfway through and put the small speakers in his ears. The cover art on his lockscreen read ‘Bastille’ in bold white font. Of course he had good taste in music too, you thought bitterly.
The twelve hour drive dwindled down to it’s final hours, marked but the periodic buzzing of Peter’s phone on his lap. After it went off three times in a row you looked at in annoyance and hoped Peter would take the hint. The notification was a text from MJ with nondescript emojis, including the squirt gun one. Peter didn’t seem to have noticed your glare and happily responded to the messages.
You let out an audible groan at the sight of his smile. The boyish, upwards quirk of his lips was nothing short of adorable and it physically pained you. Not only was Peter Parker smart and seemingly kind, but he was cute too. As well, at least from what you assumed from the messages, taken by one of the smartest girls in school. It simply wasn’t fair.
“Is Pissbag Parker annoying you?” Flash’s voice crept up from the seat behind you and made you jump slightly in your seat. Before you replied, Peter plucked out an earbud.
“Is everything okay?”
“You being too loud? Y/N here doesn’t seem to happy.” Flash’s taunts seemed to frighten Peter as he looked to you.
“N-No I’ve been quiet this whole time,” he stammered. Flash rolled his eyes and opened his mouth with a readied retort. You took the pause and stepped in.
“Peter’s been fine, Flash. A more agreeable bus partner than you are to John.” You gestured over to the skinny, black-haired boy Flash was sat beside. “Why don’t you be quiet?”
“Alright,” Flash said as he sat back down in his seat. You groaned again and turned back, only to have locked eyes with Peter once more.
“What? He was being annoying,” you said, justifying your rudeness.
“Y-yeah, n-no it’s jus-” Peter was cut off by a buzz. His phone lit up in his hand. Another message from MJ. You bit the inside of your cheek to quell the jealousy, but your envy spilled out before you could stop it.
“You better answer that,” you snapped before you settled back against the window. You let out a huff and hoped silently that the next few hours of the drive would go by quickly. It was torture, being sat next to Peter Parker and knowing full well just how more complete he was than you. Or, maybe it was the fact he was complete without you.
What do you think, my friends?? I hope you liked the first installment! I promise this story picks up, it’s a slow burn, like I said!

An Arrangement - Chapter 1
Mainichi Shimbun. April 2nd 1996
HIGURASHI SHRINE FIRE: GAS LEAK KILLS 8.
At least 8 people died and two are injured after the shrine and martial arts studio caught fire due to a gas leak in the Setagaya district. The district's fire department has confirmed facilities were not prepared for an emergency. Fire spread briefly to neighboring buildings before being contained.
Owners of the martial art studio and their youngest son perished in the fire. Relatives of the victims are taking legal action against the remainder of the Higurashi family.
August 21st 1996
The summer was at its peak and the streets of Tokyo were sweltering hot. Kagome felt overwhelmed by the heat, the upbeat music from the shops, the bright colors on people's clothes. She wanted really badly to scurry away to a dark, quiet room. Her aunt Akari was walking two yards ahead of her with dauntless resolve, unaffected by the heat.
They turned a corner and were suddenly submerged in a wave of salarymen in trite suits pouring out of the nearest subway exit. To close the distance between them she practically had to elbow a few of them aside. "I don't see the point in going. My dad had no lawyer friends." She hissed, trying to keep her voice down.
Akari clucked her tongue. "The man offered to represent you pro bono, and that’s exactly what you can afford right now: not a cent.” Aunt Akari responded, her cheery tone clashing with her words. A few days prior a man called, saying he was an old friend of the Higurashi and would like to help Kagome. She hadn't been home at the moment, else she might have called it a scam. Instead Aunt Akari had happily set an appointment at the address he'd given.
After the fire Akari had taken Kagome in. She was her mother's youngest sibling, a divorcee who hadn't gotten along with her sister, but was willing to help her niece. And Kagome needed all the help she could get. Instead of a college graduation and job interviews She had a funeral and visits to the courthouse. Akari was determined to help the girl weather the loss of her home and family. But that required her having a will to live, and Akari sometimes doubted her niece still had that.
Then there were the legal issues. Five students had lost their lives in the fire -youths who had merely gone for a class that day. The families were seeking a settlement, claiming the facilities were faulty and the Higurashi negligent. Kagome hadn't once spoken up at the families accusations, merely bowing and accepting blame. She felt responsible for it, and the guilt was eating her away. ‘But so are the lawyers’ Akari thought. The girl would be left penniless if she let them have their way.
“Ah, we’re here.” Akari said, stopping at the entrance to a plain, nondescript building. “Good afternoon! We have an appointment in the fifth floor.” Akari announced confidently to the concierge.
---
The women were ushered into a small meeting room to wait. It wasn’t long before a man opened the door, introduced himself as Taisho Sesshomaru and began his explanation. He wasn’t a friend of Higurashi Kenta, rather, their families had been amicable. Kagome’s great grandfather, Higurashi Tatsuki, had been a close friend of his great grandfather, Taisho Touga. What was more, Tatsuki had cured him from a deadly disease, earning the Taisho’s eternal gratitude.
Kagome listened, and tried really hard not to stare. Because Taisho was an albino, with skin white as porcelain and hair whiter still. Most unsettling of all were his eyes, golden as a panther’s.
“That’s really nice to hear, Taisho san. My grandfather always said we come from a line of healers.” Kagome said politely, noticing he was waiting for an answer. “Your offer to represent me is very kind. However, I had reached an agreement already. I will consider it and get back to you.” She concluded and began to stand.
“We are very grateful, Taisho san” Akari emphasized, trying to maintain good graces even if she had been thrown off by her niece’s answer.
“There is one more thing.” Taisho declared in the dispassionate voice he’d used the whole time. He opened the folder he’d been carrying since entering the room and handed the contents to Akari. His gaze bore on Kagome, both searching and evaluating. She felt a strange animosity growing inside her, even as nervousness made her stomach feel hollow.
Akari gasped, and the spell was broken. Kagome turned to find her examining the piece of paper front and back, incredulous of its existence. “Taisho san, I...this can't be…” She looked at Kagome, at the paper, and once again at Taisho before handing the paper over to her niece. As she read it twice, slowly, the clock ticked over their uneasy silence.
“...It’s a marriage contract for Tatsuki’s firstborn daughter and the male heir of Taisho Touga. And from 1887.” She paused, trying to think of something to say. “This is very interesting as well. Are you...her descendant?” She ventured.
“Dear, I don’t think your grandfather had a sister. Or daughters.” Aunt Akari reminded her niece. Kagome looked at her puzzled. “The contract remains unfulfilled: you are the first daughter born in Tatsuki’s line.” She contributed.
At this Kagome’s brain went into panicked hyper action. She was, in fact, the first Higurashi daughter in many generations. If this man had presented the contract he must be the Taisho heir. The rest was an impossibility. The mere thought of a century-old contract involving her, after the horror of the last months was outrageous. Laughable.
‘An arranged marriage.’ Kagome screamed inside her head. “That’s just crazy.” She said aloud.
Akari gave her an admonishing look; then she turned to Taisho, all sweetness and smiles again. “We appreciate this show of sincerity, Taisho san. Kagome will fulfill her end of the deal if you will. Of course, I-”
“No, you don’t get to decide over this, aunt. You’re not Higurashi and even if you were, this is nonsense. We don’t even know each other.” Kagome asserted. She tried to gauge Taisho for a reaction, any sign of complaint, but he just looked at her unimpressed.
“You’re right,” Akari said, forcing her tone into softness. “I’m not Higurashi. You are, and the last one, I might add. Here you have a chance at following your family’s legacy. Consider that. You should go visit your parents’ graves this sunday- if Taisho san is available of course. And there you can decide if you want to break a ninety year old contract over a matter as simple as getting to know each other.”
The sting of her words held Kagome back. Breathless, she watched as Taisho gave a non committal agreement to visit the grave. She barely managed a curt bow when he said goodbye. Only once back in the torrid street she finally regained her senses.
“I don’t appreciate you bringing my parents’ grave into this.” She said, resentment palpable in her voice. “Besides, we don’t know who the man is. And he looks so strange.” She couldn’t help but adding.
Akari looked at her nonchalantly from the corner of her eye and approached a nearby newsstand. “First of all, you were raised better than to judge people on their appearance. The man was born with that coloring, it’s not really his fault. Besides, I found him quite handsome.” She grabbed the morning edition newspaper and flipped a few pages.
“Secondly, I wouldn’t have done that unless I thought you were making a mistake. Perhaps you didn’t notice the name of the law firm, but they’re one of the four biggest in the country. And that man is the youngest junior associate.” She triunfally extended an open spread towards Kagome. There was a picture on the page about the trial of some corporation lawsuit. She didn’t need to point him out; Taisho’s white head stood out between the group of businessmen. “You should consider at least one of his offers”
---
Akari went back to work and Kagome to the one bedroom apartment she now shared with her aunt. It felt particularly stuffy. She changed out of the borrowed formal clothes in desperate movements. As she put on her t-shirt it snagged on her nape, sticky with sweat. She hurried down the stairs, and as soon as her sneakers hit the pavement outside, Kagome dashed. Her route was forty minutes of walking, thirty if she hurried.
She’d bought only the most necessary clothes after the fire, mostly workout gear that she could afford. The microfiber pants were not her style and a tad short on her long legs. The whisper of the fabric rubbing at every step was annoying, and she tried to focus on anything else. She looked around. It was only a sleepy side street, but the aftermath of the recession was clear even there. Rows upon rows of shops gone out of business lined the way. Only a few chain stores here and there survived. Kagome saw no less than three entire office buildings that looked completely abandoned before turning a corner and going up a small path.
She felt the tingle of anxiety in her stomach. She’d graduated just that year with excellent marks; but it mattered little in a recession. All across the country unemployment was at the highest in years, and only a handful of her friends had secured long term employment. ‘I might take that man up on his offer and become a housewife out of necessity’ she thought bitterly, eyes glazed over.
Someone gave her a light push right under the scapula and it was enough to throw her off balance. “Nice to see you Sango.” Kagome said sarcastically from the floor.
Sango leaned on a parked blue sudan and looked down at her. “Unaware of your surroundings, bad balance and bad attitude.” She remarked dryly. “You’re not getting better.”
“Good afternoon Kagome. Welcome back.” A young man in his late teens greeted Kagome from the open gate in the enclosure to their right. Kagome waved at him tensely and followed inside. Sango walked behind and locked the gate after them.
At the other side was a large yard with some ten people, divided in smaller groups, training. A small shrine and altar lied at the center, to the back a sprawling house. It was the headquarters of the Taijiya, and despite being on friendly terms, Kagome was never at ease there. Like the Higurashi, they came from a line of youkai exterminators. Where her family had focused on spiritual practice, the Taijiya fixated on physical combat.
“You can train all you want, but it’s no use if you’re not listening to the feedback.” Sango pointed out as she came to stand next to her brother.
“I’ll strive to be more defensive as I walk.” Kagome replied, trying to be conciliatory. ‘Really, what is up with this girl?’ she thought frustrated. Sango was around Kagome’s age or older; about an inch shorter, and hell bent on being the toughest teacher to her students.
Kohaku tried to hide his chuckle of amusement. The resemblance between the siblings was uncanny, although he was calm and cool headed whereas Sango tended to stubborness. “I’ll take over Kagome’s lesson today.” He informed his sister. Sango nodded and walked away bored. He was younger than her, twenty one at most, but his father was training him as leader, not Sango -maybe the reason for the girl’s desire to prove herself. They headed to the mats and went over a few attacks.
Not an hour later Kagome was covered in sweat and breathless, but her mind was clear. Kohaku waited as she collected herself. A few tendrils escaped his short ponytail, but that’s about all he had to show after wrestling for an hour.
“I felt a big aura today. Enormous actually.” He confided in her. “But then it just…vanished.” He was staring into space, and he stretched out his arm as if reaching for it. He let his hand drop to his side and chuckled at himself. “It doesn’t make much sense. Did you feel anything?”
Kagome shook her head. “You sister is right, I’m not very aware of my surroundings.” She admitted with a tight lipped smile. “Besides, you know I’m blocked spiritually since the fire. I can hardly meditate.”
“Work on it. We need a miko on our side.” Kohaku gave her a reassuring pat on the shoulder. “Lately, youkai are stirring all around.” He noted.
Kagome fixed a polite expression on her face. Growing up Higurashi, she’d learnt all the drivel about youkai hidden among humankind. Of spells to bind them, of killing them off quickly, and of its many trinkets and baubles. She had never liked the whole thing. And yet it was her one remaining link to her family. It was no use discussing that with Kohaku, so she excused herself and went to join Sango’s drill, hellish as it might be. She was exhausted by the end of it, and a big blue bruise was forming on her arm. She ran home to get there before her aunt.
August 25th 1996
The days after Taisho’s visit were a different sort of living hell for Kagome at home. Akari pestered her with tidbits about Taisho, about the success of arranged marriages and beauty treatments she should try.
Come sunday, Kagome found herself dressed in her aunt’s black skirt suit and a rather formal coiffure. She felt stuffy, and older, and unprepared. If Akari sensed her uneasiness that didn’t stop her from lecturing Kagome on how to make a good impression while she applied some makeup on her.
Finally she had enough. “Don’t you think if he was such a catch he’d have a wife by now? A man in his late thirties should be married already. He’s probably an insufferable prick.”
At this her aunt stopped her artful application, rolled her eyes up to the right and considered. “I think he wouldn't marry the kind of woman he dates. So a prick, yes. But now he wants to settle down.”
Kagome scoffed and then bit her lip, anxious again. “Auntie I know I’m a burden…” she felt a knot at her throat, and impossibly, more tears, “but going after this guy is humiliating. I can pay you rent and everything-”
“You’re not a burden Kagome, you’re the last that’s left of my sister.”Akari stopped her, and Kagome was surprised to hear the sincerity and the sadness in her voice. “And if this Taisho is a creep you don’t have to see him again. I’ll finish him if he tries something weird with my niece. But promise me you’ll give it a chance. Besides, this has at least gotten you out of bed.” Concern was everywhere on her aunt’s face, and for the first time Kagome noticed it had etched itself into lines that didn't use to be there. She’d lost a nephew, a sister, and a brother in law. For the last months she’d also been losing her niece with no clue how to reach her.
Kagome swallowed hard and forced on a smile. “I will” she whispered.

VnC Liveblog - Chapter 4
.All chapter liveblogs are linked HERE.
The Case Study of Vanitas, aka, It’s Probably A Really Bad Idea To Get Into Fights With People Called ‘Hellfire Witch’, Boys, I’m Just Saying
Not much to note in the cover art this time -- we’ve got Vanitas’ standard imagery in blues and blacks, with emphasis on the hourglass earring and his eyes. And the gears, through after the airship we haven’t really had much else that was very steampunk-ish in the story. Maybe that’ll change in later chapters.
Re: the eyes -- we know that most vampires have eyes that glow red when they drink or use their powers (I think that’s how it works?) and they have a link to the crimson moon, but Vanitas is human, so even though he’s got a connection to the Vampire of the Blue Moon, his blue eyes might just be a coincidence. (re: for the a e s t h e t i c) (though the color matching with that hourglass is a bit suspect on the symbolic level, so who knows)
We get a bit of a peak at the dynamics in Dante’s crew before we jump back into the action --
Johann is very camp. I wonder if the matching suits were his idea. I like his relationship with Dante, though. Riche seems to be their junior member -- at least Johann is looking out for her.
Uh-oh. Luca’s heading back into the fray.
Chapter title: Memoire 4 Love Femme Fatale
Well, ‘femme fatale’ is Jeanne, that’s pretty clear. But ‘love’? Eh? Are we introducing a romance? Or is this the protective love between Jeanne and Luca?
So, Jeanne’s chasing Noé down the back-alleys of the -- was it the riverfront district? Warehouses, we’re surrounded by warehouses.
She catches his foot!
Noé intercepts! \o/
(’may i throw you back’, pfff)
But Vanitas is no slouch himself, even if he is back to being carried like a kitten.
We already knew that Vanitas was aware of Jeanne’s reputation, but this exchange makes me think he knows a bit more than surface level rumors. But he doesn’t seem up-to-date with the no-killing influence Luca has on her.
Vanitas tells Noé to follow the plan (which we are not privy to) as Jeanne finds them again.
'No’, ‘I refuse’, must be Noé‘s favorite words, he says them so much.
(Can you imagine baby Noé just constantly saying ‘i refuse. i refuse.’ all serious-like whenever someone tried to make him put down his blankie, cuz I’m imagining it, lmao.)
Note: Noé‘s teacher is a scary badass. (also what’s he holding? a cane? a switch?? oi, what was Noé‘s training like)
Meanwhile, Noé feels like he’s finally getting the upper-hand --
Uh-oh.
Pride goeth, etc etc
*sports announcer voice* That’s gotta hurt.
But why’s he looking at his hand? I didn’t notice him holding anything before.
“Now... let’s see.” He and Vanitas still have a plan to enact. Also, hi Riche!
So we haven’t had much time with these three yet, but I’m starting to get a feel for their priorities. Dante would never, ever in a million years admit to anything like fondness for Vanitas, or vice versa, but underneath all the mutual sniping I think there’s a small bond there. A teeny tiny one.
Whereas with Johann -- he honestly doesn’t care about Vanitas one way or another. If V were to be killed in front of them, I think Dante would be shocked and frozen for at least a second while Johann would say, ‘welp, it’s been a lark, toodle-loo’, grab his Two People, and get them all the hell out of there, not bothering to look back.
Riche, I don’t know enough about yet. She mostly registers to me as the rookie of this trio, tbh.
Yes, antagonize the massively powerful warrior who just threw Noé through a brick wall. That’s a good plan. (is this the plan, that would be a terrible plan)
Ooo, history, I love history. I especially love MochiJun’s history and how layered and batshit it can get once the reveals start to hit.
So the vampire-human war happened a long time ago -- how long ago, we don’t know. We know that BlueVampire!Vanitas was alive during that time. We know that Jeanne was alive during that time, but was then put asleep.
(Why? Some thoughts: she was a weapon of war and put away when peace came; she went off the rails and had to be subdued; her being put asleep was a condition of some kind; she wanted to be put under, etc. There’s no way to know what really happened yet, but it’s interesting to think about.)
We also now know that BlueVampire!Vanitas used to tell Vanitas stories about the war that clearly didn’t leave out many details. But that wording...honestly, it sounds like maybe Vanitas was a kid when he heard this? Telling stories is something you usually do with a kid, which might make sense because.human!Vanitas doesn’t look that old. Anything that happened more than a few years ago would slide into ‘kid’ territory.
Which makes me wonder...did BlueVampire!Vanitas raise human!Vanitas? Or teach him, at least? I’d be a neat parallel to Noé and his teacher.
(what if they’re the same person, bwahahaha)
Anyway, back to Vanitas taunting the highly aggravated weapon of mass destruction.
Oooo, he’s about to pull out a special move. And he -- dropped the book?
is that thing really there, or is it, like, symbolic
oh shi-
The gloves are literally about to come off...!
That kid’s got horrible timing.
Ohoho, someone woke up from their nap. Was this part of the plan or is it an interesting complication?
Ow.
...IT WAS A TRICK, you sly dog.
also vampires are monsters, huh? or just curse-bearers and bourreaus? i think this distinction may be a biiiiit important. (is this why you’re always so shocked when Noé does/says something decent, oh boy)
LMAO, oh god, I hope this Greek chorus follows Vanitas around all the time just to drag him, wouldn’t that be amazing
Damn, boy -- he really knows how to work the superior disdain, doesn’t he?
I’m still shaky on how these true names work. Do vampires just fall into types, and that’s what gets warped? You’d think something called a ‘true name’ would be more individual than that.
Oi, Jeanne, you aren’t watching? Though I like Dante being all, ‘whatever, I’ve seen this show before.’
ahahaha, OOPS.
That’s what happens when you let your grandstanding get away from you, bb.
oh hey, look who was lurking nearby and NOT HELPING AT ALL.
“...you must be joking.” in this kind of context is like, one of my favorite lines.
Also damn, Jeanne is a badass.
Yeah, saw that coming.
She really shouldn’t have let Vanitas see how distracted she became when Luca wandered into danger.
*snorts* The Greek chorus doesn’t lie.
It’s a bluff, though; no way would Noé agree to harming the kid.
oh my god.
(”don’t forget to cover his mouth as you would a hostage, like so” akfdsajkfhkjf)
Noé, you are too innocent, too pure.
And she folds like a house of cards.
I don’t think even Vanitas expected this plan to work so well.
Oh, a little bit of crazy eyes there. This is gonna be a Thing, isn’t it? Vanitas, who, as far as we know, owes his loyalty to nothing and no one uses this to kick Jeanne while she’s down.
Heh, wonder what’s gonna happen when Vanitas finds something he wants to protect.
That is definitely a plotting look in his eye. He just saw how to use this to his advantage.
1. um what
2. hey, is this the first time we’ve seen him bare handed? It’s nice to know he doesn’t have actual claws under those gloves.
3. speaking of which, is that ‘my strength is suddenly gone’ bit because there IS something magic-related about his hands, or is she just in shock?
4. that is a very unnerving look. Vanitas, what are you doing
...holy crap, whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat??
Vanitas what are you doing
Shit, this is why the chapter was called “Love Femme Fatale”, oh geez.
dante, why do you look the most freaked out out of everyone?
Alright, I know Vanitas has been set up as being utterly unscrupulous, what with the lying and taking a little boy as a hostage and using a bloodthirsty monster to do his dirty work, etc, but seriously, someone needs to introduce him to the tenants of the #metoo campaign. Sure, fine, she tried to kill him two minutes ago, but this feels like a line too far.
...
Yeah, this ain’t real. The disdain, the fear, the calculation from before -- that was genuine. This is another bluff.
And I think I know why he’s doing it. Fighting Jeanne made it very clear that she is waaaaay out of his league, strength-wise. He only won through guile, and it’s a trick that might not work again. This woman has a well-earned, blood-soaked reputation, and she was gonna walk away from this fight seeing Vanitas as an enemy to herself and Luca.
But Vanitas saw her weakness -- she lets her bonds with those she cares about distract her. She’s a killer, but she’s sentimental. Emotional.
So, if you’re Vanitas, how do you deal with this, knowing that Jeanne the Hellfire Witch might become a problem for you down the line? How do you plan to defeat a potential foe who is so much stronger than you, someone you could never hope to defeat in a fair fight?
Apparently, if you’re Vanitas, you try to seduce them.
Even if the actual seduction part doesn’t work, you can still mess with her head just enough to make her confused, maybe make her a little more likely to hesitate when it’s time for the gauntlet to finally come down.
And a split-second’s hesitation could be all Vanitas would need to make his counter.
(sidenote: i still think it’s h i l a r i o u s that Dante is the most outraged about all this kissing and love declaration stuff. Noé apparently can’t hear any of this at all, which I think is very convenient. We don’t get to see his reaction to this kind of game until later, apparently.)
Uh-oh. Looks like this kid is powerful and very, very pissed.
“A large-scale “formula” revision” mmhmm, okay, what’s that supposed to mean? Am I getting an explanation for the magic system yet?
Looks like it’s not just Luca keeping Jeanne from going off the rails -- she does the same for him.
Look at that. She’s throwing death threats but now she’s blushing, she sure as hell wouldn’t have been blushing before he kissed her, the stupid plan is working.
And honestly, aggravation and confusion are probably going to work better than actual tender feelings in this seduction. He’s going to play this role to the goddamn hilt.
Look at that face, the jerk.
Alright, that’s a better face.
Noé has no idea what he’s getting into, the poor soul.
(he didn’t have much of a presence in this chapter, did he. maybe Jeanne is mostly going to be a Vanitas subplot instead of a Vanitas-and-Noé subplot)
Apparently we’ve traded one killer on the streets for another. And even more intriguing -- he recognized this killer. ‘Course, now he’s dead, so I don’t know how useful that’s gonna be.
Whimsical creature of darkness! I did not miss you.
The true threat is revealed with a name -- “Charlatan”. But, you know --
(Charlatan: a person who falsely pretends to know or be something.)
-- which makes me think there’s proooobably something else behind this guy. He is a fake, after all. (Though, hey, ‘charlatan’ is a nice contrast with Vanitas the doctor, don’t you think.)
That’s all for chapter 4! What a night, eh?
Next, CHAPTER 5.

The Sunbeam Citizen: Pre-Riot Report
Peak of Starfall Sees Clan Welcomed Back Into the Arcanist's Grace
There isn't much to say about the event that can be done proper justice in mere words. The final night of Starfall when most of the clan climbed from the lowlands to was quite healing, but it was not about healing. It was about coming home. And for Telos and some others who followed her into exaltation, it was about going home.
This final catharsis now rests over the clan, and though the empty space of the moved on is felt, new and wonderful connections are forming in response:
Junior and Zo [Finally] Married. Their binding tie sits new and fresh on both the Old Staroak and hybrid Daystar Oak in the courtyard of House Betelgeuse. Theirs marks the first to be tied on the new tree, and has rekindled interest in the tradition.
Haematica and Serir are taking a brief pilgrimage to The Scarred Waste. The surgeon hopes to visit the abandoned lair of her mother and return to Clan Thanatos to formally apologize for cutting her diplomatic visit short after the breaking of the Armistice. On good word from Middlemist, Haematica is very likely to propose marriage to Serir if he survives the journey.
Gethsemene has surprised many of the dragons who know her by opting into partnership with Fadil, the butcher who was formally granted ownership of the Sundial Brewery prior to Cloudwhyte and Alchemilla's exaltation. While Fadil has a great sense for pairing meats and spices, he is a neophyte at brewing. Gethsemene has a slight knack for her favorite wines, but more importantly she has trade agreements with many water clans.
While the Sea of a Thousand Currents is still unstable, a land route from the islands off the Tangled Wood to the Bramble Step Entertainment District is feasible. The pair are already in talks with Mme. Caress to establish appropriate tax rates in exchange for establishing and protecting the route.
Prophecy has returned from the Court of Charge Law in the Sea of A Thousand Currents. With Kea gone with Iblis to the Arcanist, the most ardent of her opposition is no longer present, but she got quite an earful from Kiele in her stead. She accepted this gracefully, and apparently submitted herself to not see Hihi'o at all if Kiele wished, despite the fact that Hihi'o is no longer a juvenile and now lives with the other witches. Forgiveness in the situation is unclear, but at least it seems that Prophecy now understands the proper way to behave toward a charge and she is beginning to bond with the young imperial whenever he is not at the coven.
She has discovered to her own delight that she may also have charge of Kea and Iblis’ daughter, Koki’o, who has inherited the Leyline Gardens and Orchards. This would more or less make her the guardian of Kea’s lineage.
Turan has stepped down from her positions as Weaver's Voice, Light Liaison, and Magistra of House Betelgeuse. The former two responsibilities were handed off to Samhradh, who was hatched in thanks to Lightweaver for allowing the clan to stay in the Sunbeam Ruins. She has eagerly snapped up this position as well as that of People's Tribune, with the less than noble rationale that she will always have first access to Aphaster's news as well as the governmental right to be the first to announce it.
After a dozen long talks with Queen Rebis and Imperator Invigilavi, Saber will be leaving the Ruins to operate out of Horizon's Landing for its founding eons. While he is not stepping down as Tribune, and will in fact be working hard to build the economy of the clan's satellite territory, he recommended Stellaria as Acting Tribune in his absence.
In addition to taking over as Magistra of both House Betelgeuse and House Perihelion on top of her existing duties in logistics to Noon Point, this places Stellaria at the head of both the logistics sector and the commerce sector. Merchant suitors who were previously lining up to court her are now practically falling over themselves to win her favor.
Horizon’s Landing: A new name for an old way of life
Opinions toward the young Imperator have softened as several dragons prepare to take new homes and roles in Aphaster’s satellite clan. Some by choice, and some at the mysterious whim of the Lightweaver. Though the Imperator has made it very clear the sub-clan’s primary purpose is to restore the Chalcedony Circle, there are easily a dozen dragons looking to advance their studies, build their fortunes, or merely spice up their lives.
Among them: Equinox, Middlemist, Heaven, Ginger, Eaqarab, Opalite, Astrit, Otahunaiti, Camellia's twins: Zinnia and Vervain, Shekhinah, and Mars.
The Farewells of the Unexalted
Moksha has wandered away with only the barest goodbye spoken to Hart. Ever disquieted by his existence even once he was among a caring clan, perhaps he has gone to find peace he could not find in Aphaster.
Chernobog, having reached his limits, has gone on the final pilgrimage that all of his kind take. Phage, in an uncharacteristic show of friendly loyalty, has accompanied him--though he promises that "we aren't going to be free of him so easily".
Tungsten and Sunrise have gone together to the Sea of a Thousand Currents to investigate the whereabouts of the Tidelord. When asked if we would see them again, Tungsten merely said that she was old and ready to settle down somewhere where the water could take her bones when the time came. She leaves her protege, Alala Tahalil to become new Tribune of Health and Welfare. Sphalerite, in a curious show, chose to follow them. Or rather, to follow Tungsten who had been her primary guardian throughout the eons. Perhaps a quiet shore will suit her better than the outskirts of the busy and overwhelming Noon Point.
Mote has settled with the longnecks at the Sunbeam Ruins in the company of his dearest friend, the longneck mender Asklepius. He permitted visitation, but this was more a matter of politeness. Though he has no ill will toward Aphaster or his longtime clanmates, he is ready to disconnect from everything that isn’t beastclan in origin, and would prefer if dragonkind left him alone.
As promised, Fletch and Willowalk departed immediately to assist the uprising in the Ashfall Waste.
Estevao returned to the depths of the Viridian Labyrinth with his wealth, hoping to hole up somewhere where the breaking of the Armistice can have no effect on him. The latex industry is discontinued in his absence--while it had a positive effect on the medical sector, the waste it generated was a significant drain to take care of. With Chernobog gone to die, Serir likely to become part of the medical sector, and Eaquarab leaving for Horizon’s Landing, Queen Rebis opted to let the industry go. This has immediately increased her popularity among the maren and dryads.
Frelia and Harvestasha have returned to being one with Eoria until such time as they are needed again. The Foursong Nursery will not change names--they are still there within their eldest sister according to Metafalica-- and will be tended by Eoria and the mysterious Metafalica henceforth.

If you’ve never been to Oceanside on a visit to San Diego, make it a must-see this year. This coastal city, affectionately dubbed O’side by residents, is one of only 14 designated California Cultural Districts in the state. Easy to get to, it’s the last stop on a Coaster ride from downtown San Diego to North County.
Once thought of primarily as a military town with Camp Pendleton on its northern edge, it’s come into its own with a burgeoning culinary and art scene that includes new restaurants, wineries, and breweries, plus emerging cultural, artistic, and tourist attractions. The many things to do in Oceanside won’t disappoint.
Hit the Oceanside Beach
It’s SoCal, after all, so the beach usually tops everyone’s must-do list. Oceanside has plenty of choices with nine public beaches. Perhaps the most popular Oceanside beach is Pier View South on the south side of Oceanside Pier. It’s adjacent to Pier View North. It’s also a short walk down The Strand to Tyson Street Beach and Wisconsin Street Beach.
Harbor Beach, adjacent to Oceanside Harbor, is the largest beach in Oceanside and is equally popular. Both beaches are lifeguard protected and have numerous amenities. Paid parking lots fill up fast. The blocks surrounding the pier have paid parking, but a street parking is free a couple of short blocks away (if you can find space).
Walk, Drive, or Pedal The Strand
The Strand is a 1.5-mile-long street that runs parallel to the Oceanside shoreline from Breakwater Way on the northern end to Wisconsin Avenue on the southern end.
All summer, you’ll see cars crawling along The Strand as people check out the waves and the crowded beach scene. Cars share the one-way, single-lane street with pedestrians, dog walkers, bicyclists, and surreys.
Dine on the Oceanside Pier
Historic Oceanside Pier is the largest wooden pier on the West Coast. It’s a two-minute walk from downtown and a four-minute walk from the Coaster station.
This neighborhood icon provides visitors with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and is a favored spot to watch whale migrations and frolicking dolphins. Ruby’s Diner, a Swing Era inspired eatery, sits at the end of the pier serving classic American fare including hamburgers with fries, sandwiches, soups, salads, milkshakes, and fabulous views.
Fishing is allowed on the pier, and there is a bait shop at the pier’s halfway point. You can get great photos of the coastline from the end of the pier.
Make It a Family Day at Tyson Street Beach and Park
Tyson Street Park includes Tyson Beach. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see Lifeguard Tower 5 on the beach. You can access the park via The Strand, which runs between the grassy park and the sandy beach. Another access point is at the top of the hill at Pacific Street.
There is a colorful multi-level stairway leading from the metered parking above to the park. You’ll find picnic tables with benches, a public telephone, restroom and shower facilities, an expansive grassy area for lounging, a children’s playground, and of course beach access across The Strand. The beach between the flags is marked for swimming only, no surfing.
Channel Your Inner Hodad at The California Surf Museum
Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a dedicated hodad, you know that enthusiasm for surf history and surfing, in general, is peaking. The California Surf Museum is an international repository for surf history, presenting all aspects of the surf lifestyle and culture to the public.
Be awed by surfboards, surfing equipment, bios of surf greats, surf art, memorabilia, photos, videos, magazines, and all things surf related on your visit to one of the best things to do in Oceanside.
Experience Regional Art at Oceanside Museum of Art
Oceanside Museum of Art is located blocks from the beach on Pier View Way with views of the ocean and Oceanside Pier.
This fine arts museum presents regional and international exhibitions of contemporary art designed to surprise and engage visitors. You can expect landscape paintings, art quilts, architectural glass, studio furniture, neon sculptures, and other examples of fine art that represent community culture.
Kids will appreciate the interactive nature of the museum.
Take a Self-Guided Mural Tour
You can learn a lot about a community through their public art, particularly their street art. Oceanside, which is a state-recognized cultural district, has several vibrant murals throughout the city that pop off walls to grab your attention.

Best TV Series For Law Enthusiasts
Looking for a new law series to binge that isn’t created by Dick Wolf? Have you already binged your way through Law & Order, SVU, and Criminal Intent? Good news, there are countless shows out there that are focused around legal roles. Maybe you’re a law student looking for something to watch while you study for the bar or maybe you’re a lawyer looking for a new show to mutter “That’s not how it’s done!” while you watch.
Whether you’re a fan or a professional, here are ten of the best shows for law enthusiasts that you can binge tonight.
Better Call Saul (2015 – )
5 Seasons, 51 Episodes on Amazon Prime [IMDb 8.7/10] Cast: Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian, Michael Mando
If you loved Breaking Bad, then you’ll love this spin-off series. Six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became the attorney of Walter White, he was a small-time attorney known as Jimmy McGill. He was a champion of low-income clients and an underdog among his peers. The series follows Jimmy as he works with the private eye Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Rake (2010 – 2018)
5 Seasons, 45 Episodes on Amazon Prime [IMDb 8.6/10] Cast: Richard Roxburgh, Matt Day, Kate Box, Caroline Brazier
Set in Australia, this series revolves around the Sydney criminal-defense barrister Cleaver Greene (Richard Roxburgh). He works on cases that most barristers would never touch because his clients are typically guilty of the heinous crimes they are being tried for. The character is largely based on a real-life barrister and author, Charles Waterstreet. While the series focuses heavily on the legal cases he’s handling, it also focuses on his own self-destructive personality which includes addiction and a myriad of problems with the women in his life.
Suits (2011 – 2019)
9 Seasons, 134 Episodes on Hulu [IMDb 8.5/10] Cast: Gabriel Macht, Rick Hoffman, Sarah Rafferty, Patrick J. Adams, Meghan Markle
Set at fictional New York City law firm the series follows Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), a talented college dropout, as he begins work as a law associate for Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) despite never attending law school. While the show focuses on the cases that Harvey and Mike work on together, the series became best known for the interpersonal relationships between the characters. The series finale was hailed as one of the most satisfying series finales in television history. Which is pretty steep praise.
Billions (2016 – )
5 Seasons, 51 Episodes on Showtime [IMDb 8.4/10] Cast: Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis, Maggie Siff, Malin Åkerman
A “ripped from the headlines” series, Billions was inspired by the real-life investigations undertaken by Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2009 to 2017. The series focuses on hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) as he accumulates wealth and power in the financial world. His aggressive and illegal tactics lead the United States Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) to attempt to prosecute him. The series has a large ensemble cast, helping to interweave dynamic stories about law enforcement and private enterprise.
The Good Wife (2009 – 2016)
7 Seasons, 158 Episodes on Hulu [IMDb 8.3/10] Cast: Julianna Margulies, Matt Czuchry, Christine Baranski, Archie Panjabi
Alicia Florrick (Julianna Marguiles) has been a good wife to her husband (Chris Noth). When political corruption and a sex scandal lands her husband in jail, she returns to her career as a defense attorney, moving past the persona of a humiliated wife. The series has received critical acclaim for its storylines and was considered one of the best drama series on TV.
Silk (2011 – 2014)
3 Seasons, 18 Episodes on Amazon Prime and Hulu [IMDb 8/10] Cast: Maxine Peake, Rupert Penry-Jones, Neil Stuke, Theo Barklem-Biggs
The series is set around a group of barristers from a set of criminal law chambers in London. The story mostly follows the rivalry between Martha Costello (Maxine Peake) and Clive Reader (Rupert Penry-Jones). While it was mostly a courtroom drama, the creator wanted to also focus on the human drama behind the scenes, inspired by his own experiences as a former barrister.
American Crime Story (2016 – )
2 Seasons, 19 Episodes on Netflix [IMDb 8/10] Cast: Varies
Created by American Horror Story’s Ryan Murphy, the anthology series has so far covered two groundbreaking cases in American legal history. The first season covered the murder trial of O.J. Simpson, while the second covered the assassination of Gianni Versace. It’s a spectacular series filled with familiar faces. The upcoming season is set to cover the impeachment of President Bill Clinton.
The Practice (1997– 2004)
8 Seasons, 205 Episodes on Amazon Prime [IMDb 7.7/10] Cast: Steve Harris, Camryn Manheim, Michael Badalucco, Dylan McDermott
Bobby Donnell (Dylan McDermott) is a passionate lawyer and head of a struggling Boston law firm, whose instincts tell him that the most important cases aren’t about the money. The series revolves around Bobby, his receptionist Rebecca Washington (Lisa Gay Hamilton), and the junior attorneys with the law firm. This series led to the equally popular spin-off Boston Legal.
Bull (2016 – )
4 Seasons, 87 Episodes on Hulu [IMDb 7/10] Cast: Michael Weatherly, Freddy Rodriguez, Geneva Carr
The series follows the employees at Trial Analysis Corporation, a jury consulting firm headed by Dr. Jason Bull (Michael Weatherly), who is a psychologist and trial science expert. Bull uses his skills and those of his team not only to select the right jurors for his clients, but also to help his clients' lawyers decide which type of argument will win over jurors best. The series is inspired by television personality Dr. Phil who worked for a trial consulting firm.
Ally McBeal (1997 – 2002)
5 Seasons, 112 Episodes on Amazon Prime [IMDb 6.8/10] Cast: Calista Flockhart, Greg Germann, Jane Krakowski, Vonda Shepard
The series begins with Ally McBeal (Calista Flockhart) joining the firm co-owned by her law school classmate Richard Fish (Greg Germann) after leaving her previous job due to sexual harassment. Although the series is largely focused on the weekly court cases, the main plot of the first three seasons is centered around Ally working alongside her ex-boyfriend Billy Thomas (Gil Bellows) and his wife, and fellow lawyer, Georgia (Courtney Thorne-Smith). The series started off strong, but the last season, unfortunately, earned it a cancellation from Fox.
If this list didn't help you find something to binge tonight, at least Annalise Keating and her students are there for us. Did you see that series finale?

30 Things to Do in Oceanside, California
See all two dozen of them on a self-guided tour that follows a carefully designed map from your smartphone. Drive or bike the route and soak in the Oceanside vibe.

18 Differences Between The "Mean Girls" Movie And The Musical
https://styleveryday.com/2018/04/09/18-differences-between-the-mean-girls-movie-and-the-musical/
18 Differences Between The "Mean Girls" Movie And The Musical
Spoilers ahead! Don’t put us in your Burn Book if you read something you don’t want to.
The cafeteria cliques are a little different. The new tables are: Debate Team, Dance Team, Rich Stoners, Gangsta Whites, Woke Seniors, Peaking-Too-Soon, Strivers and Survivors, Junior Believers, Christian Believers, Wallflowers, and Fending Off Skeevers.
They still have the Sexually Active Band Geeks, JV Jocks, and “The Worst” aka the Plastics.
Mean Girls on Broadway / Via Facebook: MeanGirlsBway
Karen in general is much more of a ~shining star~. She has seriously hilarious lines (that are also underlined with some sad truths of today).
There’s a song called “Stop” and Karen sings about sending nude pics and not cropping her head out and a guy sharing them with all his friends.
Karen: Now I only get naked with people in person! Also someone should teach boys not to do that in the first place.
Mean Girls on Broadway / Via Facebook: MeanGirlsBway
There’s still a part about “explaining Regina George,” but no $10,000 commercials in Japan or punching in the face.
Caitlyn Caussin: Regina George saved my life once! ‘Cause one time at Wiener Circle, she saw that I was choking, and she told me to stop choking. And I did!
Rachel Hamilton: Regina George is considered the prettiest girl in school. And I’m like, okay white people.
Mean Girls on Broadway / Via Facebook: MeanGirlsBway
Aaron Samuels is also in the Burn Book, and it’s because he actually lives in another school district and is secretly attending North Shore.
Also can confirm his hair still looks sexy pushed back.
Mean Girls on Broadway
Obviously there are a lot of jokes about social media, apps, and the internet…
Mrs. George: I’m not a “regular mom,” I’m @coolmom! “@coolmom,” 2,300 followers. Followback. Likesforlikes.
Mean Girls on Broadway
…and updated references that make more sense in ~2018~.
Gretchen: Sometimes I feel like an iPhone without a case. Like, I know I’m worth a lot, and I have a lot of good functions, but at any time I could just shatter.
Same, Gretchen. Same.
Mean Girls on Broadway / Via Facebook: MeanGirlsBway
There’s an entire song about sexy Halloween costumes, but this time, Karen doesn’t kiss her first cousin.
She instead sings about curing sexy cancer, saying, “That’s not right, is it?”
Mean Girls on Broadway / Via Facebook: MeanGirlsBway
Shane Oman and Regina do not get caught in the projection room above the auditorium — they fuck in a lion suit.
We can’t make this shit up.
Mean Girls on Broadway / Via Facebook: MeanGirlsBway
The Janis pool party thing still happens, but instead of just calling her a lesbian, Regina calls her a “space dyke.”
The story is a little different and kind of weird, but we’ll just go with it.
Mean Girls on Broadway
There’s still a Winter Talent Show, but the Plastics perform “Rockin’ Around the Pole” instead of “Jingle Bell Rock.”
And tragically Amy Poehler wasn’t in the aisle of the orchestra seats dancing along. Not grool.
Mean Girls on Broadway / Via Facebook: MeanGirlsBway
And Kevin G raps, but not the same iconic rap we all know from the movie.
Kevin G: Awwwwwwww… Don’t bring me no little-ass white girl booty!
Yeah, that’s pretty much all of it lol.
Mean Girls on Broadway / Via Facebook: MeanGirlsBway
The entire show is laced with internet culture in both good and bad ways.
Featuring everything from memes to Instagram references.
Damian: Caddy, I did a paper on this! Our prefrontal cortex isn’t fully formed until we’re 25. It’s why we’re not allowed to rent cars! ‘Cause we will wreck them just to make a cool Boomerang.
Mean Girls on Broadway / Via Facebook: MeanGirlsBway
Instead of borrowing a car, Damian borrows his grandmother’s jazzy (motorized scooter).
LOL.
Mean Girls on Broadway / Via Facebook: MeanGirlsBway
Yes, there are Trump references.
Regina: That’s what I keep trying to explain to the President on Twitter but he blocked me. Hahahahha. Love ya!
And when Cady accuses Damian of tampering with the election and nominating her for Spring Fling Queen, Janis blames the Russians.
Mean Girls on Broadway
And other political references. Tina Fey wrote the book, people!
Ms. Norbury: And we have to stop beating each other up over every little thing, ’cause meanwhile, men are running around grabbing butts and shooting everybody.
Mean Girls on Broadway / Via Facebook: MeanGirlsBway
For some reason, Regina calls herself a “Fugly Cow” instead of a “Fugly Slut.”
We thought maybe it was to stop slut-shaming, but they called someone else a slut, like, three minutes later.
Mean Girls on Broadway
“Fetch” is still a thing, but so is “Schquillz.”
Kevin G: “It’s a cool new way of saying ‘skills.'”
Marwan Jitla: “Kev, stop trying to make ‘schquillz’ happen. It’s not gonna happen.”
Mean Girls on Broadway
And last but not least, Regina actually imparts some important wisdom.
Regina: Don’t apologize for things that aren’t your fault. And never apologize for being a boss.
Mean Girls on Broadway
In conclusion: the musical version of Mean Girls is truly fetch, and it’s officially open on Broadway now. You can buy tickets here, enter the digital lottery here, and pre-order the cast recording here.

Information on Himachal Pradesh Tourism and Tourist Attractions
HIMACHAL PRADESH TOUR PACKAGES
Himachal Has always had a mystical fascination for the Indian mind and tourism is not of recent origin here. It has been on this account called the Divya Bhoorni, or the land of gods. The Puranas and Sanskrit literature have sung its praises. In the Skanda Purana it is stated: "He who thinks on Himachal, though he should not behold him, is greater than he who performs all worship at Kashi. In a hundred ages of the gods I could not tell thee of the glories of Himachal. As the dew is dried up by the morning sun, so far the sins of mankind by the sight of Himachal."
Himachal Pardesh is synonymous with Himalayas and Kalidasa in Kumara Sambhava has called it Devata-Aatma or the divine soul. Another story in Purana is illustrative of the reverent spell the Himalayas have exercised on the people. After his conquests king Janamtapi performed Rajsuya Yajna, at the conclusion of which his guru, Vashishtha, demanded the customary guru dakshina (the offering for the preceptor). To this, the king replied, "When I conquer Uttar Kashi* I will hand it over to you." Vashishthagot infuriated at the irreverence shown to Himalayan areas and said: "No one can be allowed to cast an evil eye on the land of gods, and thus saying killed Janamtapi.
It is well known that rishis built their ashrams in Himachal areas. These ashrams served as the seats of learning for the high and the low alike. The scions of royalty and the children of the poor Brahmins and the scholars flocked to these unique institutions. Himachal areas thus remained places of pilgrimage and even today thousands imbued with religious fervour visit its temples located in difficult terrain. But tourism in the modern sense of vacation resorts and as an industry began developing here only in the nineteenth century when the British, weary of the heat of the plains, started founding hill stations for rest and peace initially and for reasons of work and strategy later.
Sabathu, a small village about 20 miles from Kalka, in the Sivaliks, was the first of such hill stations where the British Political Agent started living in the beginning of the nineteenth century. Later the Political Agent, Major Kennedy, during reconnaissance of the area during the Gurkha war, discovered a 'thickly wooded' spot around Shamla Devi temple, where Shimla was later built.
Major Kennedy constructed the first house in Shimla in 1822. He invited the Governor-General, Lord Amherst, to stay with him in 1827. The 'happy visit' of the Governor-General was a signal for the expansion of the town, which besides being a summer resort, became a 'watch tower' for the activities of the Sikhs in the hill states on the western side of river Sutlej. Later as the shadows of Russia started falling across Tibet, the Governor-General, Lord Dalhousie, shifted his summer headquarters to Chini, now known as Kalpa, the headquarters of the border district of Kinnaur. Shimla grew gradually as one Governor-General after another came to stay here for the summer. Houses came up with typical English names and designs, the big buildings had British castles as their models and the small houses looked like country houses of Scotland. By stages Shimla blossomed into the summer capital of India.
Following suit, the Punjab Government also built its summer headquarters here and Shimla became the biggest hill station of the world at a height of 7,000 feet above sea level. Shimla was connected to Kalka through a -narrow gauge railway known those days as the "wonder in hill rail traction", at a cost of Rs. 4 crores. Shimla had great attractions like the football matches, horse racing, sports and (pagal) gymkhanas, the first of which was held by Lord Auckland in 1838 at the spacious Annandale, after his victory in the first Afghan war.
Following Shimla, a chain of hill stations like Dharamsala, Dalhousie, Dagshai and Kasauli were established. In Shimla and on the southern slopes of Himalayas, schools were also set up for providing teaching facilities to the Anglo-Indians to man junior jobs. Later these became well known public schools. Though hill stations sprang up all over Himalayas and even in minor hill ranges, none could surpass the glamour of Shimla, which was the venue of national and international conferences. Shimla is still quite British in character, majority of its houses, suburbs and roads have English names.
Shimla fell on evil days after the departure of the British in 1947. For some years it was the headquarters of the Government of truncated Punjab. But in 1953 when the Punjab Government shifted its capital to Chandigarh, it became a back number amongst the districts of that State. On its integration with Himachal in 1966, Shimla got a new lease of life. The building activity, which was at a standstill since 1936, was revived. Its tourist potential, as the centre of a big tourist complex extending to some 40 miles on each side was sought to be developed.
Shimla is spread over a ridge measuring some 12 square kms. On the offshoots of the crescent-shaped ridge are located the suburbs of the town. In its vicinity amid the rustling woods, are the shady walks and circuitous paths which at each turn unfold fabulous scenic views. Its vast levelled ground at the Ridge is the favourite evening promenade, the Mall, the fashionable shopping centre and the scandal point, the rendezvous for gossip.
Shimla's mood changes with its seasons, each of which has its own charm. Perhaps the best season of theyear is autumn but the early spring runs a close second. The air is fresh in these periods, the days are warm and bright and the nights are crisp, clear and cool. Autumn welcomes the visitors with calm equanimity and spring says it with flowers. Winter here is known as the season of 'long moon nights'. Shimla then becomes a frost-covered silent city.
Himachal is visited by over two lakh tourists every year. Its eternal snows, black woods, rippling springs, rhythmic streams, roaring rivers, picturesque lakes, lush green valleys and meadows are irresistible attractions. Besides the usual peace and relaxation of hill resorts its areas present a new kind of adventure to the skiers, winter sportsmen, hikers and mountaineers. Two important tourist complexes, Shimla-Chail and Kulu-Manali, besides other places are being developed to exploit their tourist potential. The Shimla-Chail tourist complex spreads some 40 miles around the focal point of Shimla and includes Kufri, Chail, Phagu, Narkanda, Mashobra, Naldera and other places.
The summer headquarters of the erstwhile Patiala State, Chail (height 2,150 metres) is situated about 45 kms from Shimla and has the highest cricket ground in the world. The palace of the Maharaja now houses a posh hotel run by, the State Tourist Development Corporation. The small town is located amid thick woods and has fine walks. It is being developed with provision of modern amenities. It is linked with Kandaghat and Shimla via Kufri and Indira Rest House.
Situated 16 kilometers from Shimla, Kufri has won a name on the sports and tourist map of India due to its ski-runs and the seed-potato farm of the Central Potato Research Institute. Well connected by bus service Kufri has the best of shady walks through tall firs Just 3 kms from the ski slopes is located the famous tourist hotel, Wield Flower Hall, once the residence of Lord Kitchner, the Commander-in-Chief of India in the beginning of the twentieth century? About 1 km from Wield Flower Hall is the Retreat, the week-end resort of Lord Curzon. Between Wield
Flower Hall and Retreat is Hem Kunj (formerly Dane's Folly), the summer holiday resort of the Punjab Governor. All these have spacioUs lawns and fabulous gardens and commanding views of hills and the snowline.
Narkanda is reached from Shimla by passing through 64 kms of picturesque scenery and the valleys of Kufri, Phagu and Matiana on the Hindustan-Tibet Road. A magnificent view of the perennial snowline is visible from here. Narkanda serves as a transit point for visiting the apple areas of Thanedhar-Kotgarh on one side, Kulu via Luri on the other and the quiet resorts like Bagi (2,700 metres) and Khadrala (3,300 metres) on the other. The nearby Hattu Peak (3,300 metres) is extremely popular for hiking and for a unique view of the eternal snows, the fertile seed-potato growing areas and dense forests. Besides, it abounds in big and small game.
The popular picnic spots of Mashobra and Naldera are 12 kms and 20 kms respectively from Shimla on the road to Tattapani known for its hot springs. Mashobra draws the visitors for its panoramic views and dense vegetation while Naldera is known for its nine-hole golf course.
Other tourist resorts in Shimla district include Rohru, famous for trout fishing, Hatkoti, known for its temples, the trade centre of Rampur and the pilgrim centre of Sarahan, where the temple of Bhimakali is located.
The Kulu-Manali tourist complex is spread in the entire Kulu valley, which is lavishly gifted with superb scenic wealth. It has a unique combined view of the snowy peaks, the flowing waters, the smiling orchards and the emerald meadows. The valley changes its appearance and com-plexion with the change in season.
Kulu valley offers its best during the spring when the blossoming apricot trees look like fairy sprays of leafless bouquets. Side by side cherry and peach blossoms throw splashes of colour on the hill sides. Later in autumn under the clear blue sky, the fields and forests show an unforgettable tint of crimson and gold embroidered into the evergreen foliage of firs and deodars. In winter the dazzling sunshine over the snows on the hill tops lends its own splendour to the valley.
Kulu, which is located on the bank of river Beas is the central point of this tourist complex. The town is the headquarters of the district named after it and has an extensive grassy maidan (Dhalpur) where the famous Kulu Dusselira and other social and cultural functions are held. Served by air service from Chandigarh, Kulu is famous for its temples and architecture. About 25 kms from Kulu is the ancient town of Naggar which was earlier the State capital. It is known for its castle and the Roerich museum. Jagatsukh, the biggest village of the district on the Naggar-Manali road, is popular for its annual Chacholi Yatra. The quiet resort of Katrain is famous for trout fishing while Vasishth and Manikaran are known for hot springs.
Manali with its unspoilt scenic grandeur is extremely popular with the tourists. Log cabins built in the thick forests here present probably the best view in the country. Having ideal walks, climbs and trekking routes, it houses the Mountaineering Institute of the State. Manali is a trade centre for Lahul and is also known for Dhoongri temple dedicated to goddess Hidimba. Built in typical indigenous style, it has a four-tier pagoda-shaped roof.
Chamba, the valley of milk and honey is known for its streams, meadows, temples, paintings, `Rumar and Khajiar lake. This lake which is located on a saucer-shaped lush green plateau has a floating island. Dalhousie, located in the outer slopes of Dhauladhar range is another important hill resort in the district. It is thickly wooded with stately pines and oaks and has lovely picnic spots all around. Brahmaur is famous for its temples. Saloni and Bhandal are the other tourist resorts.
In Kangra district, the important tourist centres include Dharamsala, Palampur, Baijnath, Kangra and Jwalamukhi. Dharamsala is located at the foot of Dhauladhar and has a magnificent view of its snowy peaks. Nearby are the waterfalls of Bhagsu Nath and the Dal Lake, known for the big annual fair of Gaddis held in September. Dalai Lama has his headquarters in Dharamsala. Palampur is famous for its salubrious climate and tea gardens. Baijnath is a hill resort known for its ancient temple. Kangra and Jawalamukhi attract lakhs of pilgrims during the fairs held twice annually in Navratris.

A New Standard in Gold Mining
This post A New Standard in Gold Mining appeared first on Daily Reckoning.
Big news just broke in the gold sector.
The story originated from industry bellwether Goldcorp. It involves a relatively complex set of mergers and business associations, but the bottom line is that a new bar has been set for how the gold mining industry works.
I believe that this new trend will affect the entire precious metal sector, from large mining concerns down to small juniors. Things are looking up for mining companies and their shareholders.
Here’s the story: Last month, Goldcorp announced that it entered an agreement with Barrick Gold to develop a major, new gold-bearing mineral district called Maricunga. This area is located in the super-high, very dry Atacama Region of northern Chile.
Why is this important? Begin with three points:
This deal is a major step for Goldcorp — entering Chile, taking the lead from Barrick and developing a vast, new precious metal district The deal marks a major teaming and risk sharing arrangement between Goldcorp and Barrick The deal sets a new bar for future merger and acquisition (M&A) activity within the mining space — paving the way for more of this style of M&A action with major companies, intermediates and juniors.
Goldcorp and Barrick — two elephants in the gold mining space — will set up a 50/50 joint venture to develop a string of projects in the heart of the Maricunga gold belt. This area is one of the world’s largest undeveloped gold districts.
The joint venture aspect of this deal alone is important. Two big guys are laying down their corporate credibility, and sprinkling their holy water, so to speak, onto a nearly undeveloped mining patch. It’s a sign that the Mining Zombie Apocalypse of the past five years is truly ending.
This Chile play is a structured deal with many layers. It begins with Goldcorp buying a 25% share in a project called Cerro Casale from Barrick, Goldcorp is also picking up another 25% stake in this project from Kinross Gold. This gives Goldcorp its “50,” and leaves Barrick with “50.”
The project itself holds eye-watering levels of gold, silver and copper — over 23 million ounces of gold, just shy 6 billion pounds of copper, and beaucoup silver. That’s a heck of a lot of metal! Right away, you can see that this is a game-changer for Goldcorp. It doesn’t just move the proverbial needle. It adds an entire new gas tank.
In addition to the Kinross and Barrick buys to obtain 50% of Cerro Casale, Goldcorp is using its own shares to fund a separate $185 million deal. It’s buying a well-regarded, junior explorer-developer named Exeter Resource Corp. Exeter controls a site called Caspiche, which is also located in the Maricunga belt, about 6 miles north of Cerro Casale.
Caspiche also offers incredible levels of precious metal — about 24 million ounces of gold, 54 million ounces of silver and over 5 billion pounds of copper (although these numbers are lower than engineering confidence, at current stages of exploration).
The main focus on this new deal, however, is how companies must team-up to develop a gigantic resource of gold, silver and copper.
This Goldcorp-Barrick deal places a world-class level of new gold-silver-copper resource onto the global development table — tens of millions of ounces of gold-silver, and billions of pounds of copper. It comes after several years of investment drought, the Mining Zombie Apocalypse, when most miners were cutting budgets and shedding assets due to low gold prices.
The deal highlights the respective corporate cultures of Goldcorp and Barrick, which are quite different in many ways. In the past couple of years, Goldcorp has focused on boosting production. Goldcorp is driven by its internally-generated “Peak Gold” thesis.
This thesis is based on the fact that major discoveries dried up back in 1995. It takes about 20 years to go from discovery to production, so peak production hit in 2015. Goldcorp is trying to lock down as existing discoveries.
On the other side, Barrick has repeatedly stressed that its key company priority is improving cash flow through better margins. Barrick wants not just ounces, but highly profitable ounces.
According to Barrick president Kelvin Dushnisky, “This agreement will allow us (Barrick) to direct capital elsewhere in our portfolio, while ensuring shareholders retain exposure to the optionality associated with one of the largest undeveloped gold and copper deposits in the world.”
Also, it’s worth noting that, having inked its new joint venture with Goldcorp, Barrick is off the hook for most initial development costs associated with the Maricunga mineral belt project. Barrick has handed control of development to Goldcorp. It’s a form of risk-sharing that evidently suits the respective management style of each company.
Both companies want to develop new resources while consolidating infrastructure to reduce capital and operating costs. The goal is to expedite permitting by showing how the development will reduce the environmental footprint, while at the same time create increased returns compared to two standalone projects.
In other words, there’s no need to duplicate investment on two separate large-scale projects. It’s capital discipline at work.
The most-important metric of any gold miner is cost per ounce. As long as a company can produce gold for less (preferably much less) than the daily price for yellow metal, they’ll see cash flow and profits. At the end of the day, that’s the idea.
Another angle on the foregoing is that a company’s mining costs are almost immovably grounded during mine-planning and buildout. The ore body is laid out; pit size and/or shafts are dug; major equipment is bought and staged; labor inputs are established; chemistry and circuits are settled; all that, and much more, is done on the frontend.
After a mine is up, running, digging and processing, people who manage the place focus on keeping costs pretty much constant. Managers want no surprises. Miners seek a stable, level workforce, with predictable costs for equipment, fuel, supplies and the like. Sure everyone wants to improve and find new efficiencies whenever possible. But, at the very least, the idea is to keep costs on an even keel within the mine site.
This focus on cost-consistency, within day to day operations, is the key to understanding why gold mining companies and their profits are so highly leveraged to gold prices. A rising price for gold should put a dollar-for-dollar gain on the bottom line, if internal costs are stable (allowing for factors like royalties, taxes, etc.).
This helps explain why, when gold shares endure a sell-off like we’ve seen in the past two months, the bearish sentiment creates both impairment and opportunity. It’s why Jim and I have not panicked at recent downward excursions for gold prices and/or mining share levels.
The mining sector may have drifted down, but costs remain about the same for producers. Nothing has really changed for nominal economics of advanced stage developers. Solid ore grades don’t change with any market and low costs prevail.
With oil prices falling, we may see even better results in upcoming quarters due to future savings on energy costs. Meanwhile, gold pricing remains at least at a floor. And as Jim Rickards has noted, gold prices are likely heading up over time as the instability in global markets increases.
With Goldcorp setting a new pace for capital investment in a frontier region, and setting a new level for premiums in M&A, we can anticipate a solid spring and summer ahead for our gold miners.
Regards,
Byron King for The Daily Reckoning

30 Things to Do in Oceanside, California
See all two dozen of them on a self-guided tour that follows a carefully designed map from your smartphone. Drive or bike the route and soak in the Oceanside vibe.
Explore Oceanside Harbor Village
One of Oceanside’s favorite waterfronts is picturesque Oceanside Harbor Village. You’ll find a collection of nautical-inspired souvenir, gift, and apparel boutique shops, and casual to upscale waterfront dining.
Popular things to do in Oceanside here include renting paddleboards and kayaks for a cruise around the harbor, joining a sport fishing excursion, or simply fishing from the harbor pier.
A wide sidewalk with occasional benches encircles the harbor for seal-watching or a relaxing sunset stroll. Paid parking lots are conveniently located all around the harbor, and a free lot is on the east end through a tunnel.
Taste the Wines of Orfila Vineyards & Winery
SoCal wineries have established themselves as a competitive California wine force, and Orfila Vineyards & Winery in Escondido is among them. The vineyard has been a San Pasqual Valley wine producer for 25 years, but they just opened their new tasting room in Oceanside in 2019.
Known for French and Italian varietals, guests can choose from the winery’s standard six tastings, or the expanded eight tastings, plus glass. A menu of small plates is available. They also host music, art, comedy, trivia, and other events, so check their schedule to see what’s on tap during your visit.
Hit the Links at Oceanside Municipal Golf Course
If you’re ready for some golfing in Oceanside, the Oceanside Municipal Golf Course in the San Luis Rey Valley is the place. This 18-hole public course overlooks the valley’s scenic hillsides and native habitat.
The course has a grass practice range, two well-manicured putting greens, a grill for light bites, and a bar for post-round relaxation. The course hosts annual qualifying matches for the PGA Farmers Insurance Open held at Torrey Pines.
Take a Selfie on Waverider Helicopter Tours
Here’s a new attraction to Oceanside that’s a perfect fit for ‘adventure selfie culture.’ Impress your friends with an Instagram photo of your feet dangling from a helicopter high above the Oceanside Pier and the Pacific Ocean. You can do that and more aboard Waverider Helicopter Tours.
Rides go from ten minutes to 75 minutes for up to three passengers at a time. Get a bird’s-eye view of Coastal California from Laguna Beach to downtown San Diego and inland to wine country. Ask for the Ultimate Selfie Package.
Learn California Mission History at Mission San Luis Rey
Dubbed the King of Missions, Mission San Luis Rey is the largest mission in California. The extraordinary architecture at The Mission includes hand-painted colorful murals, hand-carved wood doors, original hand-hammered copper baptismal font, and numerous Baroque and Classical updates.
The architectural beauty alone is worth a visit. Self-guided and docent-led tours are available. There is also a museum and gift shop on-site.
Surf the Waves with Sumo Surf Tubes
UP Sports Oceanside Surf Shop has added a newcomer to its range of water sports equipment — sumo surf tubes.
You can rent these wacky looking red-and-gold inflatable surf suits and hit Oceanside’s famously consistent waves for the entire day for only $25. 30 Things to Do in Oceanside, California
You can even rent them by the week at discounted rates. If standing on a surfboard isn’t your thing, enjoy the thrill of the wave anyway with a sumo surf suit.
Attend an Event at Junior Seau Oceanside Pier Amphitheatre
The Junior Seau Oceanside Pier Amphitheatre, located next to the Oceanside Pier on Pier View South Beach, has been a local landmark since its original construction in 1919.
