And then he came through the system [RB program] when we had Sebastian Vettel, 4 time world champion- Mark Webber retired. We chose Daniel as the Junior, with no expectation on him and he started beating Vettels ass. he won 3 races in 2014 when we had FAR from the best engine, Sebastian never won a race that year.
Dax: Even his time at Mclaren, it sucked for him but he's the only one who won a race.
Christian: He IS the only one who won a race.
Dax: and for a long time now.
Christian: and Renault he had great performances. [...] he's got to feel the love. He's got to feel comfortable in the environment that he's in. Some of his races for us were- absolutely outstanding.

Christian: I asked Dietrich to show Daniel love. Helmut was obviously pro Max, I said if you could just balance things out, let him [Daniel] know you want him. Dietrich said "no problem, I'll talk to him" so he took Daniel upstairs after the race in Austria to talk to him, and they were there for well over an hour.
Dax: To the point you were nervous?
Christian: I thought SHIT! But they reappear, and they're both smiling, I tell him: "Dietrich, how did it go?" He says,"No problem, don't worry about it. It's not even a question [that daniel would leave]"
Christian: Then we went to Germany, and his engine blew up. His engine kept letting him down, letting him down, letting him down. But from there, we went to Hungary, and we got his paperwork [Daniel's contract] for a TWO year deal all sorted out. Daniel's manager came to me and said 'listen Daniel is nervous about the engine' because we were going to switch to Honda so his manager said: 'he'll do ONE year' I thought wow. That's not really what we talked about, because in 6 months we'll be having the same conversation. So I remember I went back to Dietrich, and I said, "it's about relationships. It's NOT about contracts. If he wants a one year contract, give him a one year contract," so at this point: he's got everything he wants. Also, at that point, Daniel was doing a test for us after the Hungarian race, I thought Daniel will sign the paperwork on Monday, suddenly Monday goes and he's in the car on Tuesday. I'm starting to smell something because this is an enormous deal, you'd have thought he'd be in a rush to sign this contract. And he didn't sign the contract before he got in the car in the morning and I thought he'd sign by lunchtime but it didn't happen. He had to get out of the car and go straight to the airport because he's flying from here to LA and I thought he'll call me. I'm feeling something at this point.
Dax: you know you're about to be broken up with.
Christian: yeah.
Dax: if your girlfriend didn't show up to lunch then dinner-
Christian: exactly. So- he [daniel] rings me, I was in the car with Geri, he tells me "I just got off the plane, I arrived in LA, and I've been thinking on the flight, all the way here- I'm not going to sign the contract. I'm going to take another contract. [...] he tells me Renault? The engine that let him down for 2 years? I was convinced, I was CONVINCED- because Daniel has got a sense of humour- I thought- he's taking the piss. I thought come on. I told him: come on. There is no way. You're not going to Renault, stop fucking about, just sign the contract. After 10 minutes he finally persuaded me that he was going to Renault. It was disappointing.
Dax: I wanna applaude you, because a lot of people who go through that experience think: fuck you.
Christian: there was an element of that. I thought: go and suck on a lemon for a bit. But actually during the pandemic, I remember he called me and said "Christian I hate to say this to you but you were right"

In Depth: Sister Teams
Hello, this post is a response to an ask about F1 sister teams and how they operate. Enjoy!
So, sister teams or junior teams in F1 exist as a smaller team under the same company as a larger, championship-contending one, often called the parent team. They are completely separate with different cars, drivers, team principals, employees, etc. They are often used by the higher level team as a way of getting young drivers F1 experience before entering the 'big leagues'. The parent team also uses the sister team to test new technologies, strategies, employees, and other such things.
The phenomenon of sister teams started in the 2000s, as larger teams and their companies decides to start purchasing smaller, struggling ones. The most famous example is when Red Bull bought Minardi, and eventually turned them into their sister team. Nowadays, what used to be Minardi is referred to as VCARB or RB and is the only official sister team on the grid. Almost all of the Red Bull drivers who drove for the team in the past decade came up through RB (under various names) like Max Verstappen, Daniel Riccardo, Pierre Gasly, and Alex Albon.
Now, some may look at this structure and say it is an unfair system. Why are the richest teams allowed to get the advantage of two teams? To that I would say A) F1 is an undoubtedly unfair sport and B) there are tons of rules and regulations around sister teams to keep it fair. The major ones are as follows:
Independent construction of their cars is required. No working together.
Data sharing is strictly monitored and restricted. They cannot share things like certain performance data, certain designs, and major strategies.
Teams cannot pool resources to get around budget cap.
Not all technical parts can be shared. What this means changes every year, as some parts are declared off limits then the next year allowed, then declared off limits again.
They are absolutely not allowed to help each other during races. No purposely defending for your parent team, no giving advice, no helping with pit stops. They are separate teams and must race separately.
So, the FIA does attempt to keep it fair while allowing sister teams to exist. But why do they even allow it in the first place? Mostly it is because allowing sister teams means that the FIA gets more money from certain companies. For example, Red Bull Racing pays more money to keep both teams on the grid than another team owning a smaller one might. Another major reason is the investment it creates in fans. When a fan sees a young driver in a low level team that sisters a high level one, they might follow that drivers career because they know they are probably destined to drive for a top team. This creates a years-long bond to drivers and helps increase interest and viewership. The final major reason is that sister teams help develop new technology in F1. Parent teams tend to test things out on junior teams just so they don't interrupt their championship-contending teams season. In this way, it has helped keep innovation up. There are other reasons, of course, but these are the ones that seem to keep sister teams in F1 the most.
Current Sister Teams (Official and Non):
VCARB to Red Bull: The only official sister team, VCARB historically has sent all of their successful rookies up to Red Bull. For example, after less than a year, RB sent Alex Albon up to Red Bull as a replacement driver. They are also under the same company and are supplied the same engine.
Haas to Ferrari: Not an official relationship, but Ferrari supplies a lot of their technical aspects and Haas tends to lend out their drivers to Ferrari/send them up. For example, most expect 2025 Haas driver Ollie Bearman to go up to Ferrari eventually. Most Haas drivers are part of the Ferrari Drivers Academy.
Stake Sauber to Ferrari: Used to be a much more official sister team, but in recent years their relationship with Ferrari is more like the Haas one. Too unofficial to really be definite, but too linked to not be something akin.
Williams to Mercedes: In a way, Williams slowly started becoming the Mercedes sister team in recent years. Mercedes provides their engines and often start their rookie drivers in Williams before pulling them up. For example George Russell was a bound-for-Mercedes driver that they kept at Williams until he had gained some experience.
As for the reason why only RB is really called a sister team, it's because by strict definition Haas, Williams, and Stake Sauber are not ones. They are owned by different companies and so cannot be officially a sister team to Ferrari or Mercedes. But the technical links, the engine providing, and the driver connections means that most of what makes a sister team is there already. That's why they are referred to as the unofficial sister teams. As for why the smaller teams allow this relationship even though they don't legally have to, it's because of money, of course. Many of them would not be able to stay afloat without a top team providing engines/tech at a lower price. The big teams basically cut a deal that says 'i'll give this engine for cheaper than anyone else but in return you must let me train my rookie drivers with you'. Small teams really just have to do it. The smallest team without a top team backing is Alpine, and they have support from the French government. Aston Martin is also a smaller one with no parent team, but they have billionaire Lawrence Stroll as an owner.
That is basically it. There is good and there is bad, but ultimately this is why sister teams exist.

Hey, I just came across your blog and get the feeling that you're involved in the environmental and education sector. It's something I've been wanting to get into, but there's so much out there that I don't know where to start. Do you have any good resources on career paths and short/MSc courses?
I am! It's a big ole' sector, that is true; from our course we've had people head off into fields as disparate as land management, flood defence, sustainable fashion, environmental law, recycling firms, research science, environmental engineering, government work, sustainability advisory for companies, environmental activism, wildlife conservation, renewable energies... the list goes on.
If you feel comfortable shooting me a private message off anon and telling me the sort of things you've done so far (undergrad degree topic, for example) and roughly where you are in the world, I can probably be more specific. But my generic advice is that for the best shot you need two things, to whit:
A qualification to at least undergrad level in an environment-related subject
At least a year's experience (but volunteering while you study is 100% valid and volunteering opportunities are plentiful)
So an MSc could work very well for point one. If you have a specific idea about which way to run you can pick a course that will let you specialise; for example, University of South Wales offers one in Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology. If you're wanting a broader course that will give you the foundation you need while keeping you more employable to a wider variety of fields, on the other hand, UWTSD have Environmental Conservation and Management. I think both of those can be done part time over two years, too - the UWTSD one definitely can, so if you're working at the same time (or even just... want a more leisurely pace), that makes things easier.
For point two, you really can find volunteering opportunities very easily. Pick a few in different fields and have fun.
ALSO, if you're UK based, I can tell you right now that we are in desperate need of botanists and bat workers. For botany, practice is key, but ecology firms across the land will run little evening courses to teach you ID for certain plant families, like grasses or winter trees or what have you.
For bat work, you attend an ecology firm's evening class on how to survey bats, then you go with them as a volunteer surveyor to start working towards 100 hours of bat surveys. After a while, especially if you're also working towards an official MSc, they will take you on as a seasonal ecologist (April-September), which is paid work. Once you have 100 hours under your belt, you can get your bat license. This makes you VERY MUCH more likely to then get a Junior Ecologist job somewhere. Particularly considering that ecology firms love offering graduate schemes.
Oh, and GIS. Your MSc will teach you it, if you go down that route, but if you don't, download QGIS and follow some of the many tutorials online - it's all free, but it's vital these days across the sector. Well; unless you go into law or fashion, I guess.

seriously though it's not even 1 pm and today has legitimately been one of the worst days of my life (family stuff, don't ask) so this was super needed and appreciated. thx for the little giggle lolz
anyway yeah aerospace/astronautical engineering is kind of a weird place to be :P it's kinda niche and the workload is insane, so people burn out quick and the ones who stick around actually enjoy it a little too much tbch. the vibes are a little weird because half of my classmates are like me and there because it's a long time special interest they're willing to commit several years to and the others are obsessed with military tech and really want to be a part of that development. and they're pleasant people to be around, like they're polite and stuff, but i have actually had a conversation with a classmate who told me (and i'm quoting here) "well, i'm not the one pulling the trigger, so i'm not responsible for anything." and his ideal career paths were working on stealth bombers or hypersonics :///// yikes. there's a reason we're not taught ethics especially since military contractors are the primary ones snapping us up for jobs right out of school. ironically though the actual rotc kids are the nicest of that bunch and tend to be super collaborative and friendly? but i'm not joking in one of my first year classes we took a poll of the group's favorite movies and i shit you not over 50% of the class said one of the two top gun movies and another 15% said interstellar X__X (mine is scott pilgrim btw cuz i have taste)
luckily the yippee creatures of the class are very aware of how fucked up the industry is and willing to talk about it so there's still hope. my personal strat is to make myself a very competitive candidate for a very niche subset of the industry without very many "defense" applications lol. :D especially since a lot of those "defense" jobs are in the middle of nowhere in like, texas and alabama and florida. so not exactly the greatest places for me to be. i'm super interested in ion thruster design and development and there's a couple of startups on the west coast that are working on that so i'm crossing my fingers. tbch i am so fed up with the actual industry that i'm genuinely considering going all-in on my online "content creator™" presence just to have some shot at avoiding it. i have been having an actual existential crisis for about 3 weeks wondering if i actually made the right choices in life
but yeah the actual workload will crush your will to live unless you actually enjoy it. my classes this semester consist of incompressible fluid dynamics, dynamics control systems, structural mechanics, numerical methods, and astronomical computer simulation development >_< i'm gonna dieeeee!! and probably need an insane glasses prescription by the end of the year with the amount of coding work i have to do. plus i'm trying to score a research position and finishing up a senior-level independent study lol AND this semester i'll be driving back and forth between school and home (which is three hours each way eugh) to go to concerts and shit with my dad, but hey free tix are free tix. so in case you were wondering why i barely draw anymore, this is my life now X__X alsoalso my faculty advisor for the independent study is nonbinary and giving me job advice! they're super cool i love them foreverrrr
as for my actual hands on experience i'll admit it's limited :PP mostly because it's super hard to score industry experience before the summer before junior year and i was in recovery the whole summer so i literally couldn't hold myself upright for more than a few minutes. but i've done a bunch of projects for classes + uni-funded ones too!! my biggest claim to fame (lol) is working on a three-stage rocket designed to fly to the karman line (which is the Super Official Divide Between The Atmosphere And Space™ lol). everything except our motor was built in-house and i worked on structural design and analysis, so my job consisted of
a) working on and approving cad models of each component before we sent them to the fabrication team,
b) stress-testing all parts the fab team sent us to ensure they were flight ready (there is a picture of me somewhere sitting on a chair precariously balanced on top of three sandbags on top of a giant tube filled with more sand and our nosecone, because sand under enough pressure puts a similar kind of stress on a nosecone as it experiences in flight),
c) fixing any uneven surfaces or manufacturing errors on our parts, and
d) doing so. much. documentation. i have to be totally honest, like 75% of aero/astro e is writing the most boring papers you will ever read in your life :[
and i also built a 3d cad model of the opportunity mars rover from scratch with only official promo pics and rover "selfies" and that thing crashed the lab computers twice and took a week's worth of 8 hour days in the lab + 3 all-nighters. fml but she was so worth it thooooo
