Junicorn 2023 Day 14: Sunrise/Shine

Again like I said, I'm doing this Junicorn challenge completely out of order so the days won't match. Prompts were made by 3lfmoon_art on Instagram

Anyway as a kid I had this really lame unicorn OC named Sunshine (I was eight don't @ me) who had this magical ability to hover/fly by basically running in the air so I've repurposed her into an obligatory THoK background unicorn now named Soleil. Thought this character would would fit this Junicorn prompt perfectly

Junicorn day 28: Zelgadis unicorn cuz I’ve been rewatching Slayers

The moss was so soft and comfortable that she decided to take a nap. While she slept, she dreamt of the Waterfall over-flowing with streams of root beer and cream soda. She imagined mounds of chocolate and vanilla ice cream floating at the bottom. Suddenly, Gingerbread shook Fizzy awake! "Look, the Waterfall turned into a soda fountain!" Gingerbread exclaimed. Fizzy's eyes sparkled at the sight!

My Personal Method of Self-Inspiration

Every time I feel like I’m not making progress, I like to look at some of my work from a couple years ago versus now. This applies with illustration, writing, and much more, but I’ll specifically use an example from my illustration portfolio. 

Here’s one of my first concept drawings of the Wolf King, who appears in my novella, Gentlefolk. It’s from about two years ago:

And here’s one from my most recent academic quarter: 

Two years of difference. Two years of practice.

It’s extremely invigorating to watch my skills evolve to reflect what’s going on in my head.

But I feel like sharing an even more recent example. Here’s a unicorn I did for Junicorn 2020 - so, about a year ago:

The difference just one year of practice can make! This inspires me tremendously.

I used to get overwhelmed and annoyed when established artists posted that the only way to improve was via practice. That was daunting to beginners, I thought - it certainly felt daunting to me! But practice doesn’t feel like practice when you’re having fun, and when you’re proud of what you’re doing. 

I was proud of what I was doing two years ago, and I’m proud of what I’m doing now. The best advice I can offer is to give yourself permission to love your work - at all stages. When you love your work, practice won’t feel like drudgery.

I can’t wait to look back on posts like these two years from now and see how I’ve continued to improve.
