Precious
My entry to the 18+ ateez server's Guess The Author event that we held :)) Read it on AO3 here, if you'd prefer! It's a little event where those who want to participate, write a <500 word ficlet about a prompt. This time, the prompt was "Precious" :)
Words: 496 · Rating: T · Characters: Hala!Wooyoung, mentions of both versions of San · Ships: Can be read as romantic or platonic woosan · No archive warnings apply · Additional tags: Unresolved angsty ponderings, vaguely mentioned past trauma, Choi San needs a hug, Halateez & Ateez
Wooyoung knows San well. Like the rest of the Black Pirates, they’re tight knit. Have been for years. They’ve worked together and seen each others’ successes and failures up close and personal. Every bit of celebration and grief in graphic detail.
Although… Since the other group, the idols - Ateez, stumbled their way into this dimension, he has found himself questioning how well he truly knows his old friend.
It’s the other San. His way of existing messes with Wooyoung’s head.
The idols are, in essence, the same as them. They have the same DNA and the same natural tendencies, they’ve just lived vastly different lives. No doubt they’ve faced many hardships, living in the spotlight and having the burden of millions of eyes on them, scutinising. Expecting. No life is easy, but those are lives they wanted. Lives they chose. Lives they willingly worked towards because those were their desired paths.
Wooyoung has never had the luxury of choice. Neither has San.
Their existences started out black, white and grey, void of meaning. The blooming colors that the idols have been surrounded by since birth, the Black Pirates have had to fight tooth and nail to even see glimpses of.
Yes, Wooyoung knows San - his own San. Knows his carefully crafted persona; a right hand to Hongjoong, skilled and ruthless. Perceptive and analytical, and sharp as a knife. Never one to back down from a challenge. Never afraid to charge head first into danger if he believes it will help their cause. He knows how San became like this, too, has seen the reality of the world they live in first hand. Seen the danger that comes with challenging that reality.
San is strong, because he has to be. He’s razor sharp because if he were not, people might get a chance to hurt him - or worse, put the team in danger.
Wooyoung knows what San is like behind the scenes, too. What he’s like when he’s not actively trying to intimidate the enemy into submission with a single, fiery gaze. He’s seen him calm, seen him resting.
Sometimes he closes his eyes, trusting that the others will keep watch for a beat.
But looking at San the idol, prods at something within Wooyoung. Like a physical stir inside his chest, one that he can’t control.
This other San is soft. On purpose. His expression is honest and open. He bodily leans on his team mates and pets their hair, holds their hands.
He smiles and laughs, openly. Easily.
And Wooyoung can’t help but wonder. If his own San hadn’t been on the run his entire adult life, if he hadn’t had to look for danger around every corner, if he had ever been safe enough to let himself stop sharpening the knife of his heart for even a second... If his features, too, would shape themselves into that soft, vulnerable expression. If he would close his eyes and lean on Wooyoung.
If he would laugh.

Walking back into her small living room, Y/N is met with silence. The babbling sounds of her 15-month-old baby girl, who usually keeps herself entertained with her toys in her play pen while Y/N does the housework, has gone quiet. Assuming her little one might have fallen asleep, she peeks into the playpen only to discover that her daughter is missing.
Panic sets in as Y/N searches every corner of the apartment, trying to convince that her baby isn’t capable of climbing out on her own yet. Her eyes dart to the entrance, where she notices the stroller and the diaper bag are missing. Relief washes over her and is quickly replaced with annoyance as she picks up the phone and calls the only person brave and sneaky enough to kidnap her baby in broad daylight.
He quickly answers but before he can start his yapping, Y/N yells at him. “Yah! Jung Wooyoung! You better bring my baby back right now.”
“No,” he says defiantly. “You’ve been under a lot of stress lately with finding a new job, the divorce and your soon to be ex-husband being a total asshole. She’s coming with me to the studio while you have a few hours to yourself," he insists.  "Don’t worry; she’ll be safe and sound. You know everyone here loves her.”
Y/N can almost hear the smirk in his voice, and it only fuels her irritation further. “You can’t just take her without asking me first! What if something happens? What if she gets scared?”
“Y/N,” he interrupts, his voice firm yet gentle, “You know I won't let anything happen to her. I protect her as if she's my own."
"Fine, but if you pull a stunt like this again, you'll never see her again," she warns her best friend. "You got that? I'll make Yeonjun her godfather. You’ll be no one to her."
"You really trust Yeonjun with Hannie?" he asks, skeptically.
"He wouldn't kidnap her without me knowing," she defends their mutual friend.
Wooyoung chuckles on the other end of the call, the sound brings some comfort to her. “You know, I think you’re just jealous because I didn’t kidnap you for the day too. Stop with the housework and enjoy this time to yourself. Take a walk, go get some lunch, do a little shopping.”
Y/N sighs, her shoulders slumping as she leans against the kitchen counter. The weight of her responsibilities presses down on her. Never did she think she would be jobless, almost divorced and a single mother. But four months ago, everything came crashing down. Her husband’s mistress turned up at their door, crying and pregnant. She left, losing her job in the process, and moved in with her mother who’s been helping support her and Hannie while she finds a new job so she can get an apartment. But finding a job was proving harder than she expected. She’s seriously considering the job her mum offered her at the small restaurant she owns.
Y/N feels a twinge of guilt for wanting a moment to herself. “I know, but she’s my baby. I can’t help but worry.”
“Worrying is part of being a mother, but you also need to take care of yourself,” Wooyoung replies, his voice softening.
Y/N bites her lip, contemplating his words. He’s right, of course. The past few months have been a whirlwind of stress, and she hasn’t had a moment to breathe. “Okay, but I want updates and photos. Text me every hour, or I swear I’ll come down to that studio and take her back myself.”
"I promise to send you plenty of pictures," he assures her. "Hannie, say see you later, eomma," he adds, moving the phone closer to Hannie.
Hannie babbles into the phone until a clear word breaks through. "Appa!"
Y/N’s eyes widen with shock. Hannie just said her first word. Her heart swells with a mix of pride and disbelief. “Did she just say ‘Appa’?” Y/N asks, her voice barely above a whisper, as if she’s afraid to break the special moment.
"I've been trying to get her to say eomma," Wooyoung admits after putting his phone on speaker, disbelief and pride in his voice also. He quickly ends the call and calls her back on video call.
She quickly answers and the first thing to pop up on her phone screen is her little girl, her bright eyes sparkling with innocence and joy as she looks past the phone at wooyoung. She’s always imagined the day her daughter would speak her first word, and now it was directed at someone else. Someone that wants nothing to do with her. The reality of her situation hits her like a wave, and she feels a lump form in her throat.
“Appa,” Hannie keeps saying, her tiny voice filled with joy as she looks up at Wooyoung, her little hands reaching out wanting him to pick her up. "Look, Hannie, it's eomma," Wooyoung says, turning the phone to show Hannie her mother on the screen. For a brief moment, she captures the baby's attention, and Y/N can see the flicker of recognition in her daughter’s eyes. "Can you say eomma?" he playfully encourages, trying to elicit another word from his goddaughter.
Hannie giggles, her focus shifting back to him, her laughter like music that fills the room. "Appa!" she exclaims again.
"I think she's calling you Appa," Y/N says, the realization dawning on her. When she thinks about it, Wooyoung has present in Hannie's life more than her own father. Especially since Y/N and her ex-husband ended their relationship. Hannie's father hasn't had anything to do with her since.
"Me?" he asks surprised, turning the phone camera back to him. "Why would she call me Appa?" he questions not really thinking about it.
"Maybe she sees me as a father figure," Y/N tries to convince herself, but deep down, she knows that Hannie is forming connections, and Wooyoung is a significant part of her life.
"I mean, I’ve been around a lot since you and—" He stops himself, the mention of her ex-husband hanging in the air.
Y/N swallows hard, the lump in her throat growing. "You have been," she admits, her voice growing softer as she thinks about it. "You’ve been a great, Wooyoung. I don’t know what I would do without you."
He smiles, but it’s tinged with something more serious. "I just want to be there for both of you. You know that, right? You and Hannie mean the world to me."
"And you mean the world to us," she replies with a warm smile, her heart swelling with affection. In that moment, she realizes that there could be something more between her, her daughter and her best friend. Wooyoung has stepped into a role that neither of them expected, but it feels right.
"I don't think this is a conversation that should be spoken about over the phone," he says after a moment of silence. "I'll bring Hannie home now and we can talk more."
She nods, a small smile playing on her lips and ends the call. She rushes around the room, picking up toys and putting away the play pen. anticipating Wooyoung and Hannie's return home.

This might be a long shot, BUT I will ask anyway.
So months ago I read this series on here that was about Ateez. Reader was Mingi’s friend and he was in love with her but he ran off and joined a cult. Well she went looking for him and he contacted her from the farm and asked her to come visit. She gets basically kidnapped by cult leader Hongjoong and is held hostage. She tries to escape a few times and gets caught. They grow corn and raise animals at the farm. Wooyoung is in charge of the kitchen, San works in recruitment, Jongho works the barn, Seonghwa is Hongjoong’s right hand man and lover, Yeosang is a mechanic and I honestly don’t remember what Yunho does.
I know at the time the series wasn’t complete, but someone please help me find this again. I need to reread it.
(If you have any other cult recommendations please feel free to share!)

invisible string | woosan
And isn't it just so pretty to think All along there was some Invisible string Tying you to me? After years apart, San and Wooyoung find they were fated to each other.
Fandom: Ateez
Pairing: San/Wooyoung
Member: San, Wooyoung
Word count: 1605 words
Genre/Tropes: Alternate Universe (Fantasy), Fluff, Alternate Universe (Soulmates)
Rating: Teen and Up/PG-13
Triggers/Warnings: supernatural creature wooyoung, warrior san, mentions of wooyoung being bullied when young, soulmates, no dialogue
You can read it on: AO3
Ever since Wooyoung was a little child, there had always been a pair of eyes constantly following him around town. He knew there was something different about him, after all, it was not everything that a child was born with discoloration in the lower half of their hair, light blonde strands framing his face. He soon learned how to defend himself from insults and from other kids picking on him, standing his ground, but it wasn’t until he was around ten years old that they truly took him seriously. At first Wooyoung hadn’t really understood what had happened, until other kids, from a different town who were visiting that day decided to tease him, had cowered in fear and he looked at the ground around him. All the plants in a small radius around him had become gray, and there were almost tendrils made of the purest black shadow crawling over them. Wooyoung himself had turned around in fear, trying to grasp the situation, as a tendril hit one of the boys and he fell to the ground, frozen, paralyzed… almost lifeless, the boy’s heart hanging by a thread. Wooyoung had run, not looking back. But word had reached his family, his neighbors, his friends, and every single person in the town became afraid of the young child.
All but one: his neighbor, a boy just a few months older than him named Choi San, with those cat-like eyes that followed him around. At first the boy had been too shy, just observing Wooyoung from a distance, but Wooyoung would have none of that. He wanted a friend, and the smaller boy was dearly fun when Wooyoung got him out of his shell. And when everyone else was too afraid of him to stick around or get remotely close to him, San stayed, as if nothing at all had changed. San treated him just the same, never showing fear or hesitating to hug him, even when other people forgot and tried to rile Wooyoung and he lashed out, graying the floor, shadows reaching out to the person just enough to scare but never to hurt them anymore. And so they grew up together, always close to one another, until it was time for San to go away and train as a soldier. San’s father and his grandfather had been soldiers; there were expectations that San would be one too, and the boy didn’t want to disappoint his family, so he went away. Secretly, he wanted to get stronger to protect Wooyoung. In honesty, San was more teased than Wooyoung, body too scrawny and weak to really do anything, and he wanted to be able to defend his younger friend more. Not because San feared the shadows and grays that could hurt others, but because San feared one day Wooyoung might hurt himself. But that moment of goodbye was etched deep into Wooyoung’s mind and heart, tears falling down both of their faces as they clung to each  other, promises of letters and visitations whispered as the wagon awaited with other naive teenagers hoping for a better chance in life.
And so years passed, both boys keeping their promises of sending letters, but visitations were more complicated and couldn’t happen, so they had to make do with words on parchment and the hope that they would see each other again. While San was becoming a soldier, Wooyoung turned to books. He borrowed as many as he could, learning about different subjects and places, but his favorite to read were his mother’s and grandmother’s recipes, passed down generations, and a few other books he found on mixing different ingredients, sometimes foreign concoctions he one day would like to travel to taste and further explore. But his mother was aging, and he also needed to help sustain her, so he found a job in the only place that would accept him. A tavern in a shady part of town, with suspect elements and rough clients, ones the owner figured would be less rowdy in the mere threat of Wooyoung’s presence. And they were; all it took was a drunkard acting up and Wooyung’s shadows quickly taking him down just enough to sober up and fear for his life, and then the tavern became a much nicer workplace for him. The money was enough for the moment, and sometimes he could even go to the kitchen and try out some cooking.
The letters that Wooyoung and San exchanged were sparse due to how long it took them to arrive, for San was in the heart of the kingdom, but the pages were always filled to the max, sometimes with ink smudges from how fast they were trying to write about their days and hands were careless in their rush to communicate thoughts and feelings. San had been worried about the tavern, even if Wooyoung downplayed what happened there in the beginning, and he could not wait to go back to his friend. Wooyoung also hid - he would never admit he hid it, just omitted - how much his shadows had grown during all this time apart, sometimes almost taking over his body during the night, and thankfully he had always been alone when those moments happened. Wooyoung read of San’s adventures as a soldier in training, just as worried when he told him of creatures fought with the royal guard, and of his new friendships, glad that San was growing into someone who was not as shy anymore, even if he did sometimes wonder if San had ever loved one of them as much as he said to love Wooyoung. And more years passed, with San learning to fight different creatures other than humans. Never to fight Wooyoung, he tried to reassure him with underlined words, but now that he knew of evil creatures lurking in forests and water, he needed to know how to keep them safe. Because in both of their minds, there was no doubt they would go on adventures when finally reunited, getting away from prying eyes to finally be free to be together.
And then the much awaited time arrived. Wooyoung was at the town entrance, trying to be patient, clutching San’s last letter to him tight in his hand. He was pacing until he heard the sound of horses approaching. He had been expecting the same old wagon that took San to this far away place to bring him back, but to his surprise, there was no cart. The few boys that had left all those years ago were now back as men, and Wooyoung was looking at them, looking for his old friend, and he almost didn’t recognize him. That young lithe kid had become a man, strong arms holding the reins, muscular thighs on each side of the saddle as he came to a stop before Wooyoung. But there it was, the same warm smile towards him. He dismounted and ran to Wooyoung, not a care in the world about what people would think about them, tears running down their faces, an embrace so tight not a single strand of hair could come between them.
All the worry was dissipated. While Wooyoung paced back and forth waiting for San’s return, he could feel himself growing antsy, hands shaking, his body threatening to lose control. He struggled to dominate whatever that part of him was - and for all his love for books, he never researched it, in fear of what he would find. He saw that the pieces of grass he had been standing on while waiting had turned to gray, and his heart was in agony, not wanting to hurt the innocent people around him. But as soon as San took him into his arms, the shadows inside him started to settle down, almost as if there was an invisible string tying them, securing them enough until it would be necessary to free them. A shudder ran through his body, for it had been forever since he felt this relieved, this light. If he concentrated enough on the feeling, he could almost see a faint gold coloration in this string, a string that he found was connected to San’s body.
And then suddenly every single moment of his youth made sense. It was as if he was watching moving pictures; his entire childhood passing before his eyes from another person’s perspective and moments when he was about to lose control but nothing happened, as if a force was helping restrain him, he now saw that San had been somewhere around the vicinity. San had always protected him. San had always loved him, just as he stated in all of those letters. There had never been anyone else for Wooyoung but San, and San’s entire being had been focused on becoming stronger, better, a warrior for Wooyoung. Time was wondrous, and it had only enhanced their bond. With blurry vision, he finally paid attention to San’s armor, seeing how deep these feelings for each other truly ran. The filigrees were made to almost mimic his shadow tendrils, curving around his shoulders, chest, and waist. Some of the decorations even almost looked like a W; Wooyoung was San’s whole reason for his newfound strength. And in that moment, they forgot all about the few people around them. Their lips touched in a salty and wet first kiss, with promises of more to come. After all, they had been made for each other, fated to be together.
The journey forward could be as difficult as it had been up until that moment, but in the end, it would be worth it. It would be heaven.

“Did I do something wrong?” Wooyoung asks Y/N with a frown as Kyungmin walks straight past him without greeting him like he usually does. He couldn’t lie and say his little brother’s cold shoulder doesn’t hurt his feelings.
“I’m not sure. He was fine on when I picked him up and didn’t mention anything on the drive over,” she shrugs, slipping off her shoes. She greets him with a peck on his pouted lips. “Maybe he’s still a little upset about the last time he came to stay.”
“I thought we resolved that. I promised him no interruptions this weekend.” He says, with a sigh as he follows her into the kitchen. “I even told everyone not to call me into the company until Monday. This weekend is strictly for you and Kyungmin.”
“I know baby, but he’s a kid. Words can mean nothing until they have actions to back them up,” she tries to assure him, emptying the bag of food his mother had made for them. “After this weekend, everything will be back to normal and you’ll be his favourite again.”
“I doubt it,” he pouts again, wrapping his arms around her waist and kissing her shoulder. “You’ve been his favourite since the day I introduced you to him.”
Y/N chuckles, turning around to face him. "Well, I can't help it if I'm the cool sister-in-law," she teases, wrapping her arms around his neck. "But you’re his favourite person ever, so don't worry too much."
Resting his forehead on hers, he pecks her nose. “You’re not just the cool sister-in-law. You’re the best wife ever.”
“I know,” she smiles cheekily. “Now, go talk to your brother, while I sort out dinner.”
“How about we go out for dinner?” he suggests, despite him having only arrived home 10 minutes before her and Kyungmin.
"Sounds good to me. Give me five minutes to get changed into something more comfortable,” Y/N agrees, pulling away from him and heading towards their bedroom to change.
As she walks away, he can't help but smile to himself, grateful to have her as his wife and mother to his unborn child. Heading to the guest bedroom, he knocks on the door and enters to find his brother opening his new toys that they promised him.
"Hey, kiddo, how's it going?" he asks, taking a seat on the bed. Kyungmin looks up briefly before continuing to play with his toys. Wooyoung tries again, "We're going out for dinner tonight. You can pick the place."
Wooyoung smiles, watching his brother’s eyes light up at the mention of being able to choose where they go for dinner. He watches as Kyungmin carefully considers where he wants to eat, his face scrunched up in concentration.
After a few moments, Kyungmin finally looks up at Wooyoung and says, “McDonald’s!"
The older Jung chuckles and gets up from the bed, tousling his brother’s hair as he agrees, "McDonald’s it is then.”
The young boy’s excitement wavers a bit, prompting Wooyoung to ask, "What's wrong?"
"Can Y/N eat McDonald's?" he asks, showing his concern for his sister-in-law's pregnancy food preferences.
"She can eat at McDonald's, in fact, the baby loves McDonald's," he reassures him.
Kyungmin's little face lights up again after hearing that his niece or nephew also loves the fast-food restaurant.
“Let’s go see if Y/N is ready to go,” Wooyoung suggests and follows Kyungmin out of the bedroom.
As they enter the living room, they find Y/N ready and waiting for them. She smiles seeing the two acting all brotherly again.
