Julien Christian Lutz (Director X) Debuts Original Soundtrack for ‘Robyn Hood’
Creating one of this fall’s most anticipated original drama series, Julien Christian Lutz (Director X) unveils the original soundtrack for Robyn Hood, with the release of “Run This Hood” by The Hood (feat. Tia Bank$, SLM, Bouff). Available via Wax Records, the pulsing track opens the series’ first episode, hooking the audience and setting the dark, dramatic tone of the original scripted series, premiering Wednesday September 27th at 10pm ET/PT only on Global and STACKTV.
Featuring the vocals of Canadian rappers Tia Bank$, SLM, and Bouff, The Hood is a fictional hip-hop group at the centre of the Robyn Hood series. “Run This Hood” is the first of three original tracks that back the modern adaptation of the classic tale that Julien Christian Lutz (Director X) has spent nearly a decade bringing to life. With an impactful soundtrack that continues to push the show’s gripping commentary of today’s social climate, Robyn Hood breaks ground in a way that has yet to be seen in the realm of Canadian television.
The eight-episode, one-hour contemporary re-imagining of the Robin Hood legend follows fearless heroine Robyn Loxley and anti-authoritarian masked hip-hop band, The Hood, as they call out injustices and fight for freedom and equality in the city of New Nottingham. Handpicked by Julien Christian Lutz (Director X) himself, “Run This Hood” was written by Davi Alexandre Magalhaes de Almeida and Nick Jarjour, and produced by Ryan Stewart and Jamie Appleby.

The video for "The Road" was filmed at various carnival events that Machel and Ashanti attended {during Trinidad Carnival} including J'ouvert (the pre-dawn opening of carnival with revelers caked in mud, oil and paint) and playing mas (wearing costumes) on the road on carnival Tuesday. "We made a conscious decision that we would shoot the video during the days of carnival at places that we would be, so the cameras just captured what was happening around us," Machel explained. "You will see the colors, the cultural expression, the celebrations, and the diverse people involved in these activities and it looks like pure joy, unity, togetherness."
Several scenes were shot on Ash Wednesday at Trinidad's Tyrico Beach, but its spectacular shores and towering palm trees are overshadowed by Ashanti, who stuns in a headdress adorned with purple, yellow and teal feathers and a string bikini, strategically embellished with multi-colored beads. Toronto based Director X (Julien Christian Lutz, whose mother is from Trinidad) and his team shot the video with the carnival festivities providing the story line. "It's a carnival video so you don't need to do much more, and to be honest, the whole video comes down to Ashanti in that costume," laughed Director X (formerly known as Little X). "That was a low budget video for the times but for me," adds X, "it was bigger than the money, it was about pushing Caribbean culture. With Machel now, it's about pushing soca, carnival and just having a great time with your friends."
Official music video for “The Road" by Machel Montano x Ashanti produced by Travis World.

Quick-bite reviews: Horror Noire (2021) dir. Joe West, Julien Christian Lutz, Zandashé Brown, Rob Greenlea, Robin Givens, and Kimani Ray Smith
Stories that touch on social issues from parenthood to hate crimes through the lens of six different horror genres, united by a majority African American cast and crew rather than a single overlying narrative.
Anthologies are mixed bags by nature, but man even the segments that had potential fall incredibly flat. Not quite bad enough to be bad in an interesting way but plagued by writing issues, low-budget effects, and actors and directors who are totally new to the filmmaking game. I’m a fan of Victor LaValle and recognized his scripting, but he makes for a good example of someone who writes well not knowing how to translate that to film effectively (a lot of these actually would have worked better as short stories, and some of them started out that way!) The good thing about a movie being bad because it just feels amateurish is that many of these people are only getting started, so some of them will be ones to watch.

Happy Blessed Birthday to Julien Christian Lutz (known professionally as Director X) born October 31, 1975.
“The day Aaliyah died. Lauryn Hill sang to me about the end of the world. She cried as she played and told me to listen to the words. My friend turned enemy became my friend again. And I danced with the energy of my dear friend. The day Aaliyah died.” - Director X on Aaliyah

Music video legend Director X gets “Boundless” with All Elite Wrestling, TNT in new ad campaign
In Director X‘s own words, “this isn’t B.S. It’s real.”

The newest collaborative partner for Director X: A bunch of wrestlers.
X, born as Julien Christian Lutz and formerly known as Little X, was the BET Director of the Year in 2016. The once “protégé of pioneering director Hype Williams,” X is known for his top-tier music videos that only the cream of the crop in pop and hip-hop seem to work with — including Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Rihanna, Jay-Z, Ariana Grande and Kanye West — but outside of music, he has also put together commercials and ad campaigns for Apple Music, Ebay, Spotify, Alexander Wang and the Gap. He also won Best Feature at the Atlantic Film Festival 2015 with his feature film debut, Across the Line.
So what led him to partner with a new, up-and-coming sports entity?
“Like me, I think a lot of people will relate to the stories shared in this video,” the 45-year old said in a press release for the new #BOUNDLESS ad campaign. “I know what it’s like to be doubted, being told ‘you can’t do this,’ but AEW is proof that by believing in yourself and not listening to what the world is saying you can and will do it.
“This isn’t B.S. It’s real.”
“AEW” is All Elite Wrestling, a wrestling promotion started on January 1, 2019. They are about to complete their second full calendar year of competition, and their first year airing two-hour episodes on the cable network TNT, weekly on Wednesday nights.

“Director X is the perfect partner to showcase the AEW brand with his distinct visual style that uniquely speaks to a new generation,” Melissa Chambless, EVP of Marketing for WarnerMedia, which encompasses TNT, said in a statement. “His ability to bring these wrestlers’ incredible stories to life in such an authentic way thoroughly manifests our Boundless campaign.”

Reaching almost 60 million people a week, AEW is the first serious competition to the top promotion in the industry, the WWE. This revamped ad campaign with a branding genius such as X has a near-limitless upside.
X directed a two-minute ad entitled “The History of A Revolution” featuring how “boundless” the athletes in AEW really are, and how they defy all odds, individually and as a recent startup. Actor and wrestling personality Stuart Stone also worked alongside X.
In a sit down with TMZ Sports, Director X said the AEW “isn’t operating in the same way…at all” as its competition: “It’s really a special bunch.”
AEW currently stars Nyla Rose, the first transgender wrestler in a major sports promotion, who opens the commercial ad smashing the windshield of a Jaguar. It “just made sense,” X told TMZ. Former WWE veterans Cody Rhodes, Rusev, Matt and Nick Jackson (known as the Young Bucks), and Chris Jericho also star.
“In everyone’s scenes, we’re looking to give them something that spoke to them, who they are, their persona,” he explained.

X also had an extended sit down with The Nerds of Color’s Patrick Michael Strange and Maki Roll discussing the campaign, among other things. He says that he doesn’t know what will come next in the partnership, but there is likely to be further work coming, and he hopes to continue on with AEW.
“There’s a lot of footage,” he shared, “I don’t know what they have in mind, but they can make a much longer piece out of everything we shot.”
“Tweet and demand more,” he says later, “see what they put together for y’all.”
He also expressed hope that he “would love to get in there and do my style [in filming] on what [wrestlers] do” in-match one day.

In September, X announced the start of his own content creation studio, FELA with business partner and fellow Toronto native Taj Critchlow and 2018 BET Director of the Year Karena Evans. He hopes to support Black, Indigenous and other marginalized-identifying storytellers in media and visual entertainment.
“Our core strength is having the innate ability to tell cultural stories authentically while being a voice for the unheard and underrepresented,” their website asserts.

On Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at 6:00 PM, I will be speaking on a Manifesto Community Projects panel on the effects of systemic racism, in light of many recent, global events, and the fact that anti-Black racism is now officially considered a public health crisis in Toronto. The panel is produced in conjunction with the Government of Canada, it will be moderated by Camille Dundas, and I will be alongside my colleague and mentor Julien Christian Lutz, professionally known as Director X, Natasha Adiyana Morris, Esie Mensah, and Omar "Wolf" Allison. Click on the link in Manifesto's bio to register, and leading up to the event I will be sharing an article that I wrote on the implications of being Black in North America, which includes my photographs of the recent solidarity marches in Toronto. It is probably the most detailed article that I have written to date, and I look forward to sharing it. #blacklivesmatter #systemicracism #discussion #art #toronto https://www.instagram.com/p/CBY_H2gpF87/?igshid=mg0nufjyf8xx
