2865. Someone Should Explain What Happened
This is called "Someone Should Explain What Happened." Portugal will still be there.

I was working for a local artisanal ice cream parlor and reading Les Miserables at the same time. It was a very brief but intense moment in my life. It made me think something about the rich and the poor, the decadent and the honest. Something snapped in me one day and I started renaming all the flavors. Vanilla became Peasant. Chocolate became The Battle of Waterloo. Cookies 'n' Cream became The Wretched Poor. Mint chocolate chip became Those Who Do Not Weep, Do Not See. Customers came and went and didn't seem to notice. They already knew what they wanted. Which is its own kind of sick, slavering flavor.

Meditations on Queer Identity
Pieces of queer journalism, art, and literature that I think about often. I wanted to compile all of these in one place so that I could have them on hand, just to remember them, or to look at them. I don't have a cohesive vision or statement for this "web weave." It is primarily a personal collection.

Emory Conrad Malick (December 29, 1881 - January 23, 1959) was an aviation pioneer from the state of Pennsylvania. He was an early graduate of the Curtiss Flying School where he earned his International Pilot’s License (FAI #105). He was the first licensed Black Aviator. He was born in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, the third of six children to Darius Malick and Susan Conrad.
The first reference to his interest in flying dates from July 22, 1911, when he was building a biplane at Seven Points, Pennsylvania. He had a successful flight in his engine-powered “aeroplane.” The experience sparked a lifelong passion for aviation in him and prompted him to pursue formal flight training.
He attended Curtiss Aviation School. He became the first Black man to obtain a pilot’s license in the US. He purchased, built, and improved a Curtiss “Pusher” biplane and flew it over Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. He was the first pilot in that region of Pennsylvania.
He worked in the Delaware Valley, flying from airfields in Philadelphia and Camden counties. The first-year federal aviation licenses were issued, and he became the first African American pilot to receive a Federal Transport License, #1716, and a Federal Mechanics License, #924. These licenses were issued by the Aeronautics Branch of the Department of Commerce and were required for his continued work as a pilot for the Aero Service Corporation and Dallin Aerial Surveys. He operated his Flying Dutchman Air Service on weekends.
At an air show in Camden, New Jersey, he took two passengers for a short hop in his Waco three-seater. They were barely airborne when the engine failed. He swerved to the left to avoid the spectators. The wind caught the plane and the Waco crashed. The two passengers were injured. He crashed again, injuring himself and killing his passenger. He never flew again. With 3,000 hours of flight time, he remains one of the true pioneers of aviation. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
